Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, this initiative runs year-round, with increased outreach and enforcement July 4–6. FWC officers, along with local and federal partners, will be on heightened alert during the holiday weekend. Their goal: promote safe boating, remove impaired operators from Florida’s waterways, and remind boaters that safety starts with personal responsibility.

Managing Hearing Loss Can Reduce the Risk of Dementia

What the Research Says

The risk of dementia

As part of its ongoing hurricane preparedness efforts, Charlotte County Public Works is currently providing free sand and sandbags to residents. The self-service stations will be open daily from dawn to dusk, and residents are asked to bring their own shovels and be prepared to fill and transport up to 10 sandbags per household. Sandbag station location is 6874 San Casa Drive. Note: Sandbags are best suited for areas expecting less than 15 inches of flooding from rain or tides. They are not effective against storm surge or wave action from hurricanes. For more tips on hurricane preparation and flooding safety, visit CharlotteCountyFL.gov.

Update on Pioneer Days Organizing is underway for this year’s Pioneer Days on Labor Day Weekend, running Saturday, August 30 to Monday, September 1. This year’s theme is “Englewood’s History”. Registrations are now

open to participate in the parade, cardboard boat races or take part in the festivities in Pioneer Plaza on September 1. To learn more or register for events visit EnglewoodChamber.com/ Pioneer.

Self-Service Sandbag Stations

To help residents prepare for the 2025 hurricane season, Sarasota County is launching free, voluntary self-service sandbag stations on select dates this summer. These stations provide an opportunity for residents to protect their homes and property from potential storm impacts. Sand and empty bags will be available at South County Fleet, 4571 SR 776/Englewood Road, Venice, 9am to 5pm on July 19, and August 10. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of these early opportunities, in addition to the county’s traditional storm-activated sandbag operations. Participants must fill and load their own sandbags and are advised to bring their own shovels and gloves. A limited number of shovels will be available on-site. Each vehicle will receive ten empty sandbags. For more information about Sarasota County’s hurricane preparedness programs, visit scgov.net.

County Launches School Zone Speed Camera Program This Fall

To improve student safety, Charlotte County is partnering with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office and Charlotte County Public Schools to launch a new school zone speed enforcement system ahead of the 2025–26 academic year. The County Commission has approved a contract with a vendor to install speed detection safety cameras on designated roads and in school zones. The cameras will operate 30 minutes before school opens and 30 minutes after school closes, ensuring safer travel times for nearly 17,000 students attending the district’s 24 schools, centers, and technical college. Unlike traditional enforcement, the system does not require deputies to stop vehicles, reducing the risk to students walking, biking, or skating near schools. Instead, violation notices will be mailed to the registered vehicle owner and can be paid online. The program is funded by the fines collected from violators. As summer travel picks up, motorists are encouraged to familiarize themselves with local school zones, all of which are clearly marked with signage. Additional reminders will be issued as the new school year approaches. For more information, visit CharlotteCountyFL.gov.

Sea Turtle Nesting Season

Sea turtle nesting season runs from now through October 31 in Charlotte County. Each year, loggerhead, green, and a few Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles come to our beaches to lay their eggs. Stakes, flagging and signs marking the nest location can be seen up and down the shoreline. Charlotte County Parks and Natural Resources advises beach patrons to give the nests some space when setting up on the beach, fill in any holes and knock down sandcastles when you leave. If you’re on the beach at night, do not use flashlights or cell phone lights as they can deter nesting or confuse hatchlings returning to the water. For information, contact Alexandria Grant, Environmental Specialist at 941•613•3218 or Alexandria. Grant@charlottecountyfl.gov.

Pain come in many shapes and sizes. One of the most debilitating being the burning and tingling that comes with peripheral neuropathy. A disease that comes with years of shooting, stabbing pain that gradually ends in numbness, balance problems, and on occasion, amputations. A disease that was once classified as irreparable.

David R. of Venice, FL was facing such a fate.

“I stopped golfing. I wasn’t taking walks on the beach with my wife. I was living on gabapentin and antidepressants and everywhere I went;

Local acupuncture clinic is treating the untreatable, peripheral neuropathy with incredible results!

my doctor, the specialists, the pain institute, told me there was no cure. How are you supposed to live your life knowing that everyday brings pain and suffering?”

Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves, commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet. This causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow.

Most peripheral neuropathy sufferers experience a heightened sensitivity to touch making it almost impossible for those diagnosed to even wear shoes, much less enjoy life.

“It was like walking on sharp river rocks. I barely left my recliner.” shares David, whose experience is not uncommon for those diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy.

That is until he found Lauren Milligan of Sage Point Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine. Dr. Milligan and her staff have pioneered a cutting edge, medical solution to treat neuropathy, eliminate or greatly reduce its symptoms and give people their lives back. And they’re doing it without the use of prescription medications and invasive surgeries.

“Acupuncture is incredible at restoring blood flow and stimulating damaged nerves, preventing them from dying off,” tells Dr. Milligan. “We take our treatments a step further by integrating ATP Resonance BioTherapy which targets specific nerves in the body using microcurrent.

ATP therapy is like watering a plant. This treatment will stimulate the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair.”

Three months later David is thrilled with his progress, “I can walk barefoot on the beach again!”

Success stories like David’s are not atypical for the staff at Sage Point AIM. “We have a 87% success rate in treating neuropathy,” shares Dr. Milligan.

The number of treatments needed to allow the nerves to fully recover will vary from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. So long as you have not sustained more than 90% nerve damage Sage Point AIM

offers hope where there once was none.

While David’s peripheral neuropathy was idiopathic, meaning the cause is unknown, Dr. Milligan’s treatments can also help people whose neuropathy is caused by diabetes or chemotherapy.

“We have seen tremendous success in treating neuropathy of all types through very personalized treatments, specifically tailored to treat each individual case.”

To schedule a consultation and complete evaluation, call (941) 451 - 8154 but do so quickly because Sage Point AIM is taking a limited number of new neuropathy patients. For more information and to take advantage of their new patient offer visit SagePointAcu.com.

Two of Sarasota’s most acclaimed vocal ensembles are joining forces. Choral Artists of Sarasota, recently marking its 46th season and the retirement of longtime artistic director Joseph Holt, will merge with Via Nova Chorale, a dynamic vocal group originally founded in 2008 and rebranded in 2024 under artistic director Steven Phillips. The merger ensures the continuation of Choral Artists’ legacy of professional excellence and community-centered programming. “Via Nova is uniquely positioned to build on the foundation Joe Holt created,” said Bill Kimbell, Choral Artists’ board president. As part of the merger, Via Nova will steward Choral Artists’ respected music lending library and continue the ensemble’s tradition of engaging professional singers, a hallmark since its origins as Gloria Musicae. The merger arrives at a transitional moment for both groups. Choral Artists recently completed a successful international tour, while Via Nova has emerged as a forwardthinking ensemble exploring the intersection of art and advocacy. Via Nova’s 2025–2026 season will be announced later this summer. For more information, visit ViaNovaChorale.org. Pictured is Steven Phillips, artistic director of Via Nova.

Whether the portrait is introspective, whimsical, or boldly assertive, it acts as a portal into the human experience. The exhibition will be juried by Odeta Xheka, a nationally recognized Albanian-American artist based in Tampa, Florida. Xheka is the founder of OXH Gallery, a contemporary art space known for its cross-generational and multimedia exhibitions. WWatchingatching with Wanda

Movies and TV with Wanda Vale

So many shows, so little time, and my remote is exhausted. Every time I finish a series, Netflix pops up like an overeager waiter—“May I recommend?” and suddenly I’m three episodes deep into a Danish crime thriller, an Australian storm mystery, and a teenage dramedy that makes Gilmore Girls look like a Hallmark card. This week, I dove into Dept. Q, The Survivors, and Ginny & Georgia, three streaming treats as different as red wine, saltwater, and espresso martinis—but equally bingeable, depending on your mood (and caffeine levels). Here’s what I found, eyes wide, snack bowl replenished, and judgment fully engaged:

Dept. Q: The Basement Boys Solve Crime

If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if True Detective and The Office had a moody Scottish baby, Dept. Q is your answer. Matthew Goode plays DCI Carl Morck, a detective so grumpy he makes Eeyore look like a motivational speaker. After a traumatic incident, he’s banished to the basement to lead a cold case unit, joined by Akram

Manvelov), a Syrian ex-cop with a calm demeanor that balances Carl’s perpetual scowl.

The show thrives on its atmospheric Edinburgh setting, weaving through cold cases that are anything but. While the pacing can be as slow as a Scottish drizzle, the intricate plots and character dynamics keep you invested.

Dept. Q: 4 out of 5 stars

the Surface

Set in the beautiful coastal town of Evelyn Bay, The Survivors is an Australian mystery that delves deep into the aftermath of a tragic storm that claimed three lives. Fifteen years later, Kieran returns home, only to find the past isn’t buried as deep as he thought. The series masterfully balances suspense with emotional depth, exploring themes of guilt, grief, and the weight of secrets. The town itself feels like a character, with its caves and crashing waves mirroring the turmoil of its residents. While some characters could use more development, the central mystery keeps you hooked.

The Survivors – 4 out of 5 stars

Ginny & Georgia: A MotherDaughter Rollercoaster

Imagine Gilmore Girls took a dark turn and decided to dabble in crime. That’s Ginny & Georgia in a nutshell. Georgia is the charming, enigmatic mother with a past full of secrets, and Ginny is the teenage daughter trying to find her place in a new town.

The show juggles multiple genres—comedy, drama, thriller—and while it doesn’t always land perfectly, the performances, especially from Brianne Howey and Antonia Gentry, keep it grounded. Season 3 delves deeper into the complexities of their relationship, offering moments that are both heartwarming and heart-wrenching.

Ginny & Georgia: 3 out of 5 Stars

And there you have it, three wildly different streaming options. Want moody detectives solving decades-old crimes in damp Scottish basements? Dept. Q is calling. Need a seaside mystery soaked in grief and family secrets? The Survivors has got you. And if you’re in the mood for sass, secrets, and emotional whiplash with a mother-daughter twist? Ginny & Georgia is your new guilty pleasure.

Me? I’ll be on the couch, pretending this is “research” and not just a very committed avoidance of my inbox.

Happy watching, and may your streaming queue be ever in your favor.

Wawa Plans New Store

A Wawa convenience store and gas station is in the early planning stages for a location on South McCall Road, according to public records and development filings. The proposed store would be built at 2960 S. McCall Road, on the site of the existing McCall Plaza. Plans include a 5,537-square-foot store with multiple fueling stations. Charlotte County officials confirmed that a preliminary site plan was submitted for review in April. Because the location is already zoned for commercial general use, the project does not require a public hearing. Instead, it is undergoing technical review by planning staff. The project has drawn mixed reactions from residents. Some welcome the redevelopment of the aging shopping plaza, while others have raised concerns about traffic congestion and the proliferation of gas stations along the corridor. No timeline has been released for construction or opening. The nearest existing Wawa locations are in Venice and North Port.

SHORE & KAYAK FISHING SHORE & KAYAK FISHING

Beach Walking for Anglers

An early morning walk on a southwest Florida beach can restore your soul. The sights and sounds of surf and birds, the feel of the sun’s warmth firing up another hot day, the smell of the salty air and seaweed, all create a feeling of peace and promise. Everyone can experience this but anglers in particular get to enjoy the it before the shell seekers and swimmers show up. Early mornings are magic when it comes to catching snook on the beach. When the sea breeze lays down over night, the Gulf waters usually calm down leaving just a small curling wave along the shore by morning. A gentle offshore breeze in the morning helps with casting to snook in that first trough just off the sand. It’s a fly angler’s dream but spin fishermen catch their share of the action too. The sun coming up in the east is both your friend and a limiting factor for this type of beach fishing. Sunlight from behind and above you, when combined with polarized glasses, helps you see the subtle shadows that snook create. Other gamefish are here too including redfish, jacks, ladyfish, bluefish, flounder, trout and pompano just to keep things interesting. Most every fish on this list will gladly accept a DOA shrimp or white plastic jig. Fly casters need only a white Clouser or a shrimp pattern to score. If you spot schools of bait getting savaged by predators, be sure to cast their direction when they come by and hang on! You don’t have to hit the center of the school; there are plenty of feeding fish around the edges. Snook on the beach tend to move farther from shore as the sun gets higher. Pack light for an outing like this. We carry a small bag with our tools and a few flies, lures, and extra leader and tippet [for fly anglers] we expect to use. Packing too much stuff makes it seem like work and reduces the fun factor. Bring a phone/Beach Walking for Anglers usually try to wear light colored shirts and pants so fish looking

for silhouettes against the early morning skyline won’t see us easily. Light clothing also helps keep mosquitoes at bay. We usually wear long sleeves and zip off pants because the same light breeze and low surf that allows us to see the fish also helps no-see-ums attack early and late in the day. As the day warms up, we roll up our sleeves and unzip the legs.

Your shadow, falling on the water just offshore [the trough] will spook gamefish. The trick is to cast up current of your shadow and/or stand far enough from the water to have it fall on the sand. Cast into the shore current right along the curl. Snook will feed there on disoriented baitfish and crustaceans, like shrimp and sand fleas tumbling toward them. Fly casters need to be careful not to “line” these snook. A long leader that lets the flyline fall on the sand with the fly and leader in the curl is perfect when they’re feeding really close. For other gamefish and later in the day, cast to the outer edge of the trough and retrieve with the current. This magic time only lasts for a couple of hours so by 10AM, most early morning beach anglers are ready to let the sun seekers take over.

As the sun gets higher and the day gets hotter, another favorite kind of beach fishing gets going. This is the more relaxing, stationary kind of beach fishing complete with chairs, umbrellas, live bait, rod holders and a cooler full of cold beverages. We enjoy the beach chair approach too but we’ll get into that another time. This snook fun lasts until the Gulf temperatures dip back into the 60’s. That’s when most snook leave the beach seeking warmer water in the bays and up the creeks. Many other gamefish are still out there though. We find them in the trough all day long where they continue to attack plastic jigs and white clousers.

Compassionate End-of-Life Care Offers Comfort for Pets and Their People

Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the most difficult decisions an animal lover can make, but a local program is helping ease that burden with dignity and compassion. The Humane Society has introduced a low-cost, high-quality end-oflife program to support pets and their owners during their final moments together. Services are offered in a peaceful, non-clinical setting with calming music and a focus on comfort. “When a pet’s suffering outweighs their quality of life, euthanasia, though heartbreaking, can be the most compassionate act,” a spokesperson said. “As pet owners ourselves, we understand the depth of that loss.” One recent farewell involved a senior German Shepherd raised by a widowed owner, underscoring the emotional weight such decisions carry. “Sometimes, a pet is the last connection to a loved one who has passed,” staff shared. The program also features a Rainbow Bridge memorial on campus, where remembrance collars honor animals who have crossed over. Owners are invited to participate to celebrate and remember their pets. For more information or support, contact EOL@humane.org.

How to Help Pets Stay Calm During

Fireworks Season

Fireworks may be a symbol of celebration for people, but for pets, the loud cracks and booms can be terrifying. Each year, shelters report an increase in lost pets around the Fourth of July—many flee their homes in panic. The most important thing you can do is keep pets indoors during fireworks displays. Ensure all windows and doors are closed and secure, and that your pet can’t slip out through a screen or loose latch. Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with an ID tag, and if microchipped, that your contact info is up to date. These small steps are critical in reuniting lost pets with their families. To reduce anxiety, mask the noise with background sounds like TV, white noise, or

soft music can help. Set up a quiet place where your pet can feel secure - some prefer staying near their person, while others retreat to a cozy corner or crate. Most importantly, stay calm and reassuring. Speak in soothing tones and offer gentle affection. Your presence alone can help them feel safer. With a little preparation, you can help your furry family members stay safe and comforted during fireworks season.
