Capes, Claws & Chaos: July’s Movie Madness
234 N. Indiana Ave. • 941-460-1958
HOURS: Monday-Friday 10-5; Saturday 10-3
It’s July in Englewood, which means the air is thick enough to chew and the weather app is quietly panicking about a “tropical disturbance.” The only logical response is to surrender to air-conditioning and the sweet illusion of control offered by cinema. This week, that means ducking into the theaters for some classic summer spectacle— or, if the thought of leaving your house feels hostile, curling up on the couch with a cold drink and Netflix.
On the menu? A freshly rebooted Superman, dinosaurs with boundary issues, and Adam Sandler picking up a golf club like it’s 1996 all over again.
1. Superman (2025): Hope, Muscles, and a Reboot That Works
DC finally remembered how to have fun. The new Superman soared in with a $122 million opening, introducing David Corenswet as Clark Kent, a wholesome Kryptonian snack with a jawline so sharp it might be a concealed weapon. The movie dials up the Americana, the swoony rooftop speeches, and that hopeful gleam we haven’t seen in a DC film since… ever?
It doesn’t reinvent the cape. But it doesn’t need to. It’s clean and charming, and lets Superman be the glowing symbol of goodness in a world full of irony and Marvel sarcasm.
4 out of 5 glowing Kryptonian crystals.
2. Jurassic World: Rebirth: Life Finds a Plotline
Also at the theaters is the latest dino disaster, Jurassic World: Rebirth. I say disaster lovingly, the way you might describe your friend’s third wedding. You know it’s going to be a mess, but you can’t just NOT go.
This one picks up ten years after the last film, in a world where dinosaurs roam free and insurance premiums have presumably skyrocketed. There’s a sleek new dino-hybrid (of course), a secret government cloning facility (again), and Bryce Dallas Howard still somehow sprinting in nonpractical shoes (I checkedChloé boots this time). Chris Pratt returns too, with the same concerned face he’s worn since Parks and Rec ended.
Plot? Something-something gene ethics, something-something dinosaur trafficking. But the
real joy is watching a triceratops demolish a Range Rover while a child screams in IMAX. You don’t need nuance. You came for chaos. Also, theres a surprisingly poignant moment with a brachiosaurus, but I won’t spoil it.
Coming soon to your living room, Sandler returns as the angriest man in sports, now entering one last tournament
to pay for his daughter’s ballet school. Cue the yelling, the slapstick, and possibly a rogue gator or two. Shooter McGavin is back. PGA pros like Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler pop up. Travis Kelce and Eminem are somehow involved. Netflix said “chaos,” and I respect that.
Will it be good? Maybe. Will I watch it at least twice on my couch with a Publix sub and a fan pointed at my face? Absolutely.
Star rating? TBD, but spiritually expecting 4 out of 5 flying putters.
Final Thoughts:
Let the storms do their thing, the movie gods have given us options. We’ve got a freshly scrubbed Superman saving the world with jawline and moral clarity, genetically overqualified dinosaurs wrecking humanity’s plans yet again, and Adam Sandler returning to golf-clubbased violence in a brand-new Happy Gilmore sequel—this time straight to streaming, for the homebody in all of us.

SHORE & KAYAK FISHING SHORE & KAYAK FISHING
BY KIMBALL & LES BEERY
Kayaks as Fishing Machines
Rigging a kayak as a fishing platform is a project that involves many choices. Personal needs and preferences vary quite a bit from one kayak angler to the next. Consider whether you primarily intend to fish back waters, open bays, fresh water, or the deep blue. Another issue is whether you plan to fish primarily with lures, a fly rod or bring live bait aboard. We realize many first-time kayak anglers may begin by bringing a rod along on a rental kayak. After finding out how much fun it is to be towed about by a redfish, snook, jack or even a sail cat, many will opt to outfit their own kayak as a fishing machine.
First, let’s take a look at some practical things to bring along on a typical rental or your personal kayak for a day of fishing. We recommend a sit-on type of kayak in protected bays or flats for beginners, so these suggestions are directed at that option. We will have more suggestions for those anglers who have discovered the joy of kayak fishing in this area and want to fine tune their rigging for more comfort and even better results in a future article.
• A two-piece rod is recommended whether you plan to spin or fly fish. We carry both a spinning rod to prospect for fish and then, once we find feeding fish, we bring out the fly rod for some light tackle fun. Hooked fish will often circle your kayak. If one-piece rods are sticking up in rod holders behind you, the line may wrap it up and break them. So being able to take a rod down to two pieces and get it out of the way will save breaking the rod or losing a fish. For your first trip out, just take one rod and lay the butt end on your lap. Be sure to keep the reel out of any water on the deck of the kayak.
•A tackle bag is essential. Small is the way to go and we prefer tackle bags over noisy plastic boxes for stealth on the flats. Just bring terminal tackle that
you will actually use. Include some 20-30 lb. fluorocarbon for leader and spool up your reel with 10-20 lb. braided line. Of course, bring jigs, jig heads, DOA shrimp, size 1/0 and 2/0 bait hooks, split shot, popping corks and scissors for cutting braided line. Add a tape measure if you plan to keep any fish. Fish grippers [we like the smaller plastic, floating, glow in the dark $10 kind] and an unhooking device like pliers. These make controlling and releasing your catch easy. Place this tackle bag between your knees and use it to support your fishing rod.
• Bring a standard bait bucket with an air pump if you want to fish with live bait. Finding somewhere to put the bucket that you can reach is another matter. We carry it in the rear cargo area of our kayaks. Remember to turn off the pump when approaching shallow flats and avoid dragging the bucket in the water as it will bump against the kayak and spook fish. We often bring an empty bait bucket and a small cast net to catch pinfish or whitebait. If lures aren’t working, live bait is usually a sure bet.
• Coolers are essential anytime of the year. We like to take a small one loaded with beverages and snacks. A larger cooler [that we made ourselves from a nylon duffle bag and foam insulation] fits in the front locker of our kayaks and holds keeper fish. Both use packaged ice which keeps things cold without soaking ev-
erything when it melts. Keeping a fish alive on a stringer is okay for a while but usually the bay water is too warm. Fish on a stringer can also attract sharks and dolphin. Get the keepers on ice ASAP.
• Other things to bring along include a fishing license, first aid stuff, insect repellent and sunscreen. Optional fun things like a camera, cell phone, GPS device, credit cards and ID should be in a dry bag, dry box or in a few layers of zip locks. A good dry bag should hold a poncho, wind breaker, fleece vest and anything else you might want to have available to get warm and dry.
Angler’s Guide to Kayak Fishing Southwest Florida-Sarasota Bay to Pine Island, our WATERPROOF pocket guide, is another helpful item we suggest you bring along. !
Kimball and Les Beery, authors of “Angler’s Guide to SHORE and KAYAK Fishing Southwest Florida”, contribute these excerpts from both WATERPROOF books to promote the excellent fishing available in the Englewood area. They are available locally at Old Florida Gallery on West Dearborn, and for download at www.anglerpocketguides.com & amazon.com.

Local acupuncture clinic is treating the untreatable, peripheral neuropathy with incredible results!
my doctor, the specialists, the pain institute, told me there was no cure. How are you supposed to live your life knowing that everyday brings pain and suffering?”
Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves, commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet. This causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow.
Most peripheral neuropathy sufferers experience a heightened sensitivity to touch making it almost impossible for those diagnosed to even wear shoes, much less enjoy life
“It was like walking on sharp river rocks. I barely left my recliner ” shares David, whose experience is not uncommon for those diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy
That is until he found Lauren Milligan of Sage Point Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine. Dr. Milligan and her staff have pioneered a cutting edge, medical solution to treat neuropathy, eliminate or greatly reduce its symptoms and give people their lives back. And they’re doing it without the use of prescription medications and invasive surgeries
“Acupuncture is incredible at restoring blood flow and stimulating damaged nerves, preventing them from dying off,” tells Dr. Milligan. “We take our treatments a step further by integrating ATP Resonance BioTherapy which targets specific nerves in the body using microcurrent
ATP therapy is like watering a plant. This treatment will stimulate the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair.”
Three months later David is thrilled with his progress, “I can walk barefoot on the beach again!”
Success stories like David’s are not atypical for the staff at Sage Point AIM “We have a 87% success rate in treating neuropathy,” shares Dr Milligan
The number of treatments needed to allow the nerves to fully recover will vary from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation So long as you have not sustained more than 90% nerve damage Sage Point AIM
offers hope where there once was none.
While David’s peripheral neuropathy was idiopathic, meaning the cause is unknown, Dr. Milligan’s treatments can also help people whose neuropathy is caused by diabetes or chemotherapy
“We have seen tremendous success in treating neuropathy of all types through very personalized treatments, specifically tailored to treat each individual case.”
To schedule a consultation and complete evaluation, call (941) 451 - 8154 but do so quickly because Sage Point AIM is taking a limited number of new neuropathy patients For more information and to take advantage of their new patient offer visit SagePointAcu.com.
