The tool features an interactive map, searchable project list, funding details, descriptions of repairs, and the storm events that caused the damage, with total costs estimated to exceed $190 million. Updated in real time, the dashboard offers residents an accessible way to follow progress on parks and amenities across the county.

Sea Turtle Nesting Season

Sea turtle nesting season runs from now through October 31 in Charlotte County. Each year, loggerhead, green, and a few Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles come to our beaches to lay their eggs. Stakes, flagging and signs marking the nest location can be seen up and down the shoreline. Charlotte County Parks and Natural Resources advises beach patrons to give the nests some space when setting up on the beach, fill in any holes and knock down sandcastles when you leave. If

you’re on the beach at night, do not use flashlights or cell phone lights as they can deter nesting or confuse hatchlings returning to the water. For information, contact Alexandria Grant, Environmental Specialist at 941•613•3218 or Alexandria. Grant@charlottecountyfl.gov.

“Through the Veil”

Step into a luminous world of memory, identity, and reflection with “Through the Veil”, the first solo museum exhibition by artist Lillian Blades at the Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College, 1001 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. This immersive, site-specific installation invites visitors to wander through a suspended labyrinth of mixed-media veils crafted from acrylic, fabric, found materials, and shimmering surfaces, bathed in light from the museum’s central skylight tower. Inspired by her Bahamian heritage and her late mother’s legacy as a seamstress, Blades’ radiant color palette and intricate assemblages reflect themes of connection, transformation, and cultural discovery. The exhibition’s centerpiece is surrounded by wall-mounted works that further expand the viewer’s journey through layers of light, texture, and personal meaning. Curated by Lacie Barbour, “Through the Veil” runs now through October 26. To learn more visit SarasotaArtMuseum.org or call 941•309•7662.

Selina Román: Abstract Corpulence

From now through March 29, 2026, Sarasota Art Museum presents Selina Román: Abstract Corpulence, a new exhibition that reimagines the human form through abstraction and self-portraiture. Featuring bold, tightly cropped photographs of the artist’s own body, this series uses pastel bodysuits and tights to transform flesh into undulating, modernist landscapes. At once intimate and expansive, Román’s compositions challenge traditional notions of feminine beauty by shifting focus to line, color, and shape. The result is a gallery transformed into a space of quiet resistance— where softness, scale, and abstraction redefine the politics of body image. Curated by Rangsook Yoon, senior curator at Sarasota Art Museum, this never-before-seen installation continues the museum’s tradition of showcasing contemporary voices that provoke thought and inspire conversation. Sarasota Art Museum is located at 1001 South Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. For more information,

Downton Abbey: Return The Grand Finale

I’ve always said that some women get football, others fancy fishing, and then there are those of us who get our thrills from the rise and fall of an aristocratic English family sipping tea in rooms larger than most American apartment complexes. Yes, I’m talking about Downton Abbey, and yes, I cried my way through the series finale years ago, then perked back up for the two films that followed, and now, like a carefully ironed tablecloth unfurled for the last time, we have Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. Bring your tissues, your pearls, and your best Maggie Smith one-liners stored in your heart, because this one really is goodbye.

The film, released in U.S. theaters on September 12, 2025, is everything a lover of English melodrama could hope for: sweeping shots of the estate, intricate politics both upstairs and down, and enough costume changes to keep the wardrobe department busy for a century. At this point, the Crawleys feel like extended relatives we only see at the holidays—distant, glamorous, occasionally scandalous. What struck me most this time around is the way the story leaned into its own sense of finality. Weddings are wrapped up, inheritances secured, secrets brought to light. Everyone is given their curtain call, and while the film never quite escapes its “we’re wrapping the set for good” energy, I found that rather touching.

There’s also the undeniable pleasure of hearing the accents, those clipped vowels, the polite daggers tucked into phrases like “I dare say” or “We’ll see about that.” My husband, His Lordship, muttered, “Why does everyone sound like they’re about to fire the gardener?” I told him that’s exactly the point. If you’re not trembling at the prospect of losing your position in the scullery, are you even living in Edwardian England?

Performance-wise, it’s the ensemble that shines. Hugh Bonneville brings that steady, slightly befuddled gravitas we’ve

come to expect, while Michelle Dockery continues to wear Lady Mary’s icy resolve like the world’s chicest armor. And though she departed this world before the film, Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess is ever-present in spirit; her wit haunts the halls like the finest ghost you could ask for. The new generation steps up, too, suggesting that while the franchise may be over, the bloodline – fictional though it may be – marches on.

But let’s talk logistics, because I know some of you are already searching your streaming apps. Right now, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is available in theaters across the U.S. and UK. If you’re a Peacock subscriber, you’ll want to mark your calendar: the film will stream there after its theatrical run, in line with Universal’s usual release pattern (typically four months later). In the meantime, Peacock is already hosting all six seasons of the series, plus the earlier films (Downton Abbey and Downton Abbey: A New Era), so you can catch up or binge from the very beginning. There’s also a special treat: Downton Abbey Celebrates the Grand Finale, a one-hour NBC special that aired September 10 and is now streaming on Peacock, featuring cast reunions, behind-the-scenes stories, and a sneak peek at the film.

If you prefer your tea brewed at home, digital rental and purchase options will eventually land on platforms like Apple TV, Amazon, and Google Play. But for now, those listings are strictly “coming soon.” Physical media collectors can rest assured there will be a Blu-ray release sometime in 2026, because nothing says “English heritage” quite like a shiny disc tucked into your library. So, is the film a masterpiece? Not quite. It’s more of a fond farewell tour, heavy on nostalgia, light on new ideas. But maybe that’s what makes it work. After more than a decade of inviting us into this world of hunting weekends, flower arrangements, and whispered scandals, Downton Abbey owes us comfort more than surprises. It closes the door gently, leaving us outside in

For me, sitting there with a hot mug of Earl Grey and a vague desire to redecorate in shades of cream and gold, it was enough. Goodbye, Downton. You’ve been both utterly ridiculous and endlessly adored.

Rating: ★★★★☆ – for every tear shed into a lace handkerchief, and for reminding me that sometimes, the best drama comes served in fine china.

SHORE & KAYAK FISHING SHORE & KAYAK FISHING

Floats, Bobbers, and Corks

There are many ways to avoid getting tangled in bottom vegetation or losing tackle on the bottom. Whether we call them popping corks, floats, bobbers, or strike indicators, they’re designed to keep your terminal rigging off the bottom and visible to more fish. Though often associated with cane poles and garden worms, controlled depth devices are productive using lures too. A popping cork with a live shrimp is the most popular rig for drifting the deep flats around here. Right behind that for most anglers is a popping cork with a soft plastic tail on a jig head or an artificial shrimp. In clear water, we use 3’-5’ of 20 lb. fluorocarbon above the lure.

A popping cork, with its concave top, is not only a way to keep your shrimp out of the grass, but also a powerful attractor when used effectively. A sharp horizontal jerk with the rod tip moves the cork and makes a disturbance like a striking fish. This action also brings the shrimp up towards the surface. A pop or two every minute is plenty. Trout, like most fish, don’t want to miss a feeding frenzy and will come to see what’s happening. Ideally, they arrive to see the shrimp slowly sinking to the bottom and decide to snag an easy meal. We use the small, weighted version of popping corks for the extra weight they add when casting. Reel the cork all the way to the tip of the rod before you cast. It can be tricky casting this rig but think of it as “lobbing” it rather than as a snap cast. Feathering the line as it goes out helps too.

Specialized floats with beads that knock together create a clicking sound that attracts gamefish. This noise plus the splash of the cork may encourage more strikes. The issue we have with this set-up is that it must be re-tied to adjust the depth below the cork. A popping cork is easier to change and slides on the line to change depth.

Another place for controlled depth is when fishing over rocks or along seawalls. An excellent example of this is the Venice Jetty. We fish along the rocks here and do not recommend this spot for kayakers. Many anglers anchor baits on the bottom of the channel and consistently lose terminal tackle to the rocks and other debris. Using a small float above a freelined shrimp or sand flea will keep your bait out of the rocks. Try setting the float 3-5 feet above the bait and cast up current 15 feet from the jetty. This lets you know where your drifting bait is and helps you keep a tight line for a quick strike. Try this in winter around the jetties or any seawall for sheepshead and snook; it works!

On shallow flats, in a canal, or along mangrove channels, a freelined bait is a better choice and if the water gets less than two feet deep, a cork isn’t needed. The cork and shrimp hitting the water will spook a gamefish in shallow water. Ditch the cork and weights and spend a little more money for some handpicked shrimp that have the weight necessary to cast further. These big shrimp work great until you stumble

into some small bait stealers. If your shrimp comes back without legs, move on or switch to an artificial.

Another use we find for popping corks is when trolling jigs behind our kayaks. Unlike a trolling motor we can’t maintain a constant speed to control the depth of a lure. This float lets us stop paddling without the jig sinking to the bottom. We install the popping cork upside down, so it slides easily through surface weeds, and then tie on a jig head with a plastic shad tail 3-5 feet below it. When we stop or slow down, the jig suspends under the cork until we start paddling again.

When you’re ready for a break, try this. Anchor or stake out your kayak a long cast from a deep mangrove shoreline and position a freelined chunk cut bait in the cut along the mangroves. This works best where tidal currents can spread the scent. If you have extra baits, toss a few in the general area for chum. Now, get comfortable, open a cold beverage and relax. Odds are a redfish, snook, tarpon, [or catfish] will find it before you finish your hydration break.

Kimball and Les Beery, authors of “Angler’s Guide to Shore and KAYAK Fishing Southwest Florida”, contribute these excerpts from both Waterproof books to promote the excellent fishing available in the Englewood area. They are available locally at Old Florida Gallery on West Dearborn, and for download at www.anglerpocketguides.com & amazon.com

Give a Shelter Pet a Mini Vacation

Life in the shelter is safe and loving, but nothing compares to new adventures, quiet time, and one-on-one companionship.

Sarasota County’s Animal Services is inviting the community to take part in two short-term foster programs designed to give dogs a muchneeded break and help them shine for potential adopters. With Doggie Day Out, participants can treat a pup to a fun day of walks, beach time, naps, or even a special “pup stop” for a treat before returning them to the shelter. For those seeking a little more time, the Weekend Warrior program allows families to welcome a dog into their home for a short stay filled with snuggles, walks, and relaxation. Both programs provide valuable insight into each dog’s personality outside the shelter, helping staff make the perfect adoption match while giving participants the joy of making a difference. To learn more visit humane.org or call 941•474•7887 ext. 413.

Puppy Mat Pilates

Strengthen your core while surrounded by puppies at Mat Pilates on Sunday, September 14 from 10:30 to 11:30am at Suncoast Humane Society, 2620 Worth Avenue. Instructor Samantha Stone will lead this one-hour session, which blends Pilates, yoga, calisthenics, and ballet to improve flexibility, balance, and body awareness. The class is suitable for all fitness levels and ages and can be adapted to individual needs. Bring your mat and water bottle—puppies are provided! Registration is required in advance, and the cost is $25 per person. Register at humane.org.

Woodmere Bark

Bring the whole family and your four-legged friends to “Woodmere Bark” on Saturday, September 20, at 9am at Woodmere Park, 3951 Woodmere Park Boulevard, Venice. This free indoor community event promotes local pet care, services, and safety while offering plenty

of fun for all ages. Donations of pet food and supplies are welcome (but not required) and will benefit participating animal shelters. For details, visit SarasotaCountyParks.com, email parksonline@scgov.net, or call 941•861•7275

Barktoberfest

Celebrate fall with Suncoast Humane Society at Barktoberfest on Saturday, October 4, from 11am to 3pm. This festive, family-friendly event promises a “purrfect” afternoon of fun for all ages, featuring adorable adoptable pets, seasonal activities, games, and entertainment. Enjoy delicious food, local vendors, and plenty of opportunities to support the lifesaving mission of Suncoast Humane Society. For more details, call 941•474•7884 or visit Humane.org.

Canine Connections

Join the fun every Sunday at Canine Connections, hosted by Suncoast Humane Society. From 10am to noon, enjoy public and shelter dog play groups—an opportunity for dogs and their humans to socialize and play. Then, from 1 to 3pm, meet adoptable shelter dogs and watch their play groups in action. It’s a great way to connect with the community, learn about the adoptable pets, and see them in a relaxed, playful environment. For more information, email playgroup@humane.org or visit humane.org.
