Alturas Elementary Students Boost Fire Safety Skills with CAL FIRE
Cal Fire Lassen-Modoc Unit-Facebook The CAL FIRE Lassen Modoc Unit, in collaboration with the Modoc Fire Safe Council and Alturas Elementary School, recently led a vital Fire Prevention Week program for local students. Focusing on this year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” students received handson training inside the
Fire Prevention Trailer. They gained essential knowledge on battery safety, evacuation strategies, and overall fire preparedness, in addition to learning about the dangers of playing with fire equipment and understanding firefighter fitness and gear. This community-focused initiative, shared by the CAL FIRE Lassen Modoc
Unit, shows the strong commitment to public safety education, ensuring younger residents understand critical fire prevention measures. By teaching these crucial lessons at an early age, the program helps build safer communities through increased awareness and preparedness. Residents are encouraged to follow the CAL FIRE Lassen Modoc
Veterans Day guide to honor local service members Veterans Day is a time for reflection, gratitude and community. This November, Modoc Record is preparing a special guide dedicated to honoring the men and women who have served in the nation’s armed forces. The guide will feature profiles of local veterans, community events, support resources and ways for residents to get involved. It will be printed and distributed throughout Modoc and Lassen counties. Stories will highlight resilience, sacrifice and
leadership, while event listings will provide information on parades, ceremonies and other gatherings. Readers will also find details on organizations offering assistance with health care, education and employment, as well as volunteer opportunities and donation drives. Community members are invited to help shape the guide. If you or someone you know has served, Modoc Media encourages you to submit a photo, name and years of service.

Comments Dear Editor, My wife and I just mailed off our ballots for the oneissue special election that will determine whether or not Modoc County and the other few far north counties are robbed of our political voices in Sacramento. The thought of being at the mercy of the far-left coastal population is way beyond unacceptable. Let me tell you a true story from my childhood on the Monterey Peninsula. At age 10 just after my family moved back to Monterey from Lake Tahoe where we lived for two years while my dad helped develop Squaw Valley for the 1960 Winter Olympics, a family from New York moved in down the street from us. They moved to California because they thought the gold rush was still going on. Yep, I kid you not, that’s how ignorant they were of California history. This little true story applies to the clueless coastal
folk who have no idea of the challenges and problems and issues of ranchers, farmers, loggers, and so on. I bet that if a survey was done on the coast that asked where their food comes from they’d think that their food grows on the shelves of grocery stores. If that same hypothetical survey asked coastal folk where the lumber comes from to build their houses they would not be able to answer that question. Some Modoc County folk were born-and-raised here so they had no choice in finding themselves here, but some of us came here from coastal urban areas and we came here to get away from all that madness. My wife and I are not clueless former coastal folk, and we cherish the unique character and issues of Modoc County. Please vote no on redistricting our state!! Jeff Middlebrook

Looking Back 118 Years Ago – 1907 THE BOARD of Supervisors has accepted the plans and specs for the $36,000 County High School building. That throws Cedarville’s $10,000 school in the shade, but what we lose in the price of the building is made up in the fill in, as Cedarville has between 60-70 students and Alturas has between 20-30. 108 Years Ago – 1917 THE MODOC boys who enlisted in the Grizzlies, California’s 2nd Artillery, are making good. Modoc furnished 22 boys, and 13 of them already hold ranks of non-commissioned officers. Such a showing, while remarkable, it is not unexpected in view of the fact that the boys were above the average in physical and mental qualifications. 98 Years Ago – 1927 GENERAL manager of the NXO, S. H. McCartney, says that rail laying of broad-gauge track in Lakeview began Wednesday and 650 men are employed. Standard gauging of the line in Alturas is now complete, and the last narrow-gauge train pulled into Alturas at 2:20 a.m. Sunday. Ed Smith, a 43-year railroad veteran, was at the throttle. The first

Vickie Sharon Smith (Young), age 76, of Alturas, California, passed away peacefully on October 2nd at 1:20 a.m. Vickie never met a stranger — she could talk to anyone and make them feel like family. She loved deeply and lived with an open heart. Her greatest joy was spending time with her loved ones. She enjoyed fishing and being out on the lake, sewing, and making dolls and blankets for her grandkids and greatgrandkids. She is survived by her husband, Dave H. Smith, and her children Ricky Johnson, Tracy Johnson, Kelly Johnson, Heather Kenyon, Aaron Johnson, Cheryl Bullock, Cathy Kenyon, and
Cindy Marken, as well as many grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, and greatgreat-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her sons Tony Johnson and David E Smith Vickie’s family will celebrate her life by doing what she loved most — spending time together and sharing stories that keep her spirit alive. She was an amazing woman — strong, loving, sometimes misunderstood, never perfect, but deeply loved. > “Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us every day. Joy (Vonnie) Jones, age 88, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, September 29, 2025. She passed peacefully at home in Chico, CA. Born on October 15, 1936, in Bieber, CA, to Chester and Cora Gerig, Vonnie was a lifelong resident of Northern California whose love of family, devotion to her husband, and wittiness touched everyone she met. Vonnie grew up in Lookout, CA, where she graduated from Adin High School in 1955. She married the love of her life, Leo Jones, on August 12, 1955 in Lookout, CA. Together, they shared 69 beautiful years, filled with love, laughter, and devotion to family and friends, raising three children along the way. Throughout her life, Vonnie devoted herself to raising her children and caring for her grandchildren, who all adored her. She was always happiest with a baby in her lap. She enjoyed traveling across the United States with Leo in their motor home and loved stopping at
old and unique cemeteries. She enjoyed learning about history and medicine. You would often find her with medical books out learning about medication and interesting diagnoses. Vonnie is survived by her children, Diana Johnson (Allen) of Cassel, Danny Jones (Carin) of Redding, and Greg Jones (Cindy) of Palm Springs; her seven grandchildren, twenty greatgrandchildren, and three great great grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in her heart. Mount Vernon - Mrs. Josephine May “Jodie” Rafferty Price, 94, a 60-year resident of the Skagit Valley died at home in Avon early Sunday morning, August 31, 2025. She was born in Stratton, CO on May 23, 1931, to Henry Joseph and Orlean Rafferty. Jodie attended Bayard, NE school and Nursing School at Loretto Height College, Denver, CO. In Denver, she met Marion “Mike” Price as he studied at the Colorado School of Mines. In 1950, Jodie and Mike headed west to the mine camps of Nevada where her first five children were born. The family was always on the move between small towns and communities, including a Nevada camp named Sulphur, out on the Black Rock Desert (think Burning Kids!). After two years and two more kids in California, the family moved north, first to Whidbey Island, and finally in 1965 to Avon, west of Mount Vernon, where Jodie lived in the same historic home for 60 years minus one day! In 1975, Jodie received a BA degree in Human Services
from Western Washing State College. She immediately went to work for Washington State University’s Cooperative Extension service, teaching nutrition, child health, and more to families in Skagit, Whatcom, and Snohomish Counties. Early life in the camps pays off! She retired from WWU as an Expanded Food and Nutrition (EFNEP) Agent in 1997. For many years, she cared for a variety of domestic animals, including cats, dogs, ducks, geese, sheep, goats, horses, and even alpacas. She was very active in quilting groups, gardening, and helping neighbors. Jodie is survived by her seven children, Michael J. (Philippa) [Blaine, WA], William F. [Cedarville, CA], John E. [Bellingham, WA], James D. (Matilda) [Colorado], Steven “Sam” V. (Vickyann) [Burlington, WA], Kathy J. (Bruce) Broderick [La Connor, WA], Amelia A. Fox [Starkville, MS]; 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant
Gemma was born November 20, 2014 and passed away unexpectedly on September 28, 2025. Gemma was a beautiful red bloodhound, and was a gentle giant - unless you messed with her mommy - then she would be very protective. She did not let anyone get near her mommie. Gemma did have 3 bouts with cancer during her life, but other than that was very healthy. We were quite surprised when she became ill in the early morning hours of September 28, and we were shocked to learn she had a very advanced case of liver cancer. Unfortunately she was unable to survive the 4th bout with cancer. She died peacefully surrounded by her loved ones. Gemma loved to travel with her family and take long walks in the mountains. She loved to play in the ocean and any lake she could get near! She was a very happy girl and will be missed terribly by her family. Gemma leaves behind her heartbroken Daddy and Mommy, Don and Pam Owens, her big brother Donnie, her new baby brother Rip, her Grandparents Bob Davis and Vicky, her uncle and aunt, Rob and Ann Davis and many cousins and many many friends. We know Gemma has gone to be with her big brother Hobson and her grandmother, Deeta and those who left before her. She is waiting at the Rainbow Bridge until we join her. You will forever be in our hearts Baby Girl and we will see you again.

The Senior Citizens Valley 50 Club (SCV50C) Lunch The Senior Citizens Valley 50 Club (SCV50C) receives lunches every Tuesday and Thursday at the Senior Center in Cedarville. Lunch starts at noon, but conversation starts around 11:30. If you are in your 50’s we ask for a small donation for lunch. 60 and over is free. You can look at the menu TEACH in Alturas posts for the week in the paper for Tuesday and Thursday lunch or stop by and pick up a monthly menu at our center. Menus are also posted on the post office bulletin boards in the valley.

Lassen High Varsity Grizzlies completely dominated the Las Plumas Thunderbirds, securing a resounding 56-14 victory. This decisive win is a fantastic turnaround for Lassen, putting them firmly in winning form and boosting their season record to a strong 3-2. What a day to be a Grizzly! After a tough outing in their previous game, the Grizzlies roared back with incredible spirit and teamwork. From the opening whistle, Lassen controlled the field, breezing past Las Plumas and piling up points against a team that was previously
undefeated. CHP Investigates Hit-and-Run on Highway 139 Involving Commercial Vehicles California Highway Patrol (CHP) is investigating a hitand-run incident involving commercial vehicles and road equipment that occurred Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at approximately 10:02 a.m., on southbound Highway 139 near the Hidden Valley area. The incident, reported near mile marker 4.5, involved a tractor-trailer colliding with a Peterbilt grinder truck and then fleeing the scene. According to CHP reports, the tractor-trailer, whose specific description is currently unknown, struck the Peterbilt grinder truck. The grinder truck was reportedly engaged in road stripping or painting operations at the time of the collision. There were no injuries reported as a result of the incident. CHP units were dispatched to the location shortly after
the incident was reported, with officers arriving at the scene to assess the situation. After initial processing, units cleared the immediate area. While there were no reported traffic closures or significant delays for other motorists, the nature of the incident involving a hit-andrun and road equipment highlights critical public safety concerns. The California Highway Patrol is actively investigating this hit-andrun. Authorities are seeking information regarding the “BR TRACTOR/TRLR” involved in the collision that fled the scene. Braves Football Take A Loss to Christian Redding Last Friday Braves traveled to the only private school in their league to face off against RC Lions on Friday. After a long-fought battle by the Braves, the Lions still remain undefeated. MHS Football programs would like to extend a thankful appreciation to The Niles Hotel and Restaurant for hosting and sponsoring Thursday night’s team dinner before heading to Redding on Friday. Next up, the Modoc Braves will return home for an exciting Homecoming matchup on Thursday, October 17th, with games kicking off at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Come out and show your school spirit, cheer on your Braves, and help celebrate Homecoming 2025!
Modoc Soccer Aims for First Home Playoff in Two Decades After Strong Season The Modoc Braves Soccer have been on a roll the last few weeks. On 9/30 Modoc Soccer traveled to Fall River
on an 8 game win streak. Fall River came out on top with a 2-0 victory. On 10/7 Modoc traveled to Weed for
a pivotal SCL match. The Braves came out on top with a 4-2 victory. Irvin Salazar, Axel Salazar, Mackenzie Diven and Easton Knight scored for Modoc. Rylan and Caelan Hughes put together a great defensive effort. Easton Knight and Andres
Lopez shared the duties at goalkeeper and proved pivotal in securing the win. Modoc Soccer currently sits in 3rd place with four games to play to close out the season. They welcome Tulelake to Alturas on 10/9, travel to Etna on 10/11,
host Fall River on 10/13 for senior night and close out the regular season on 10/14. The Fall Soccer Section Championship playoffs begin on 10/21. The Braves are looking to host a playoff soccer game for the first time in 23 years.

Heritage Apple Festival to Celebrate Modoc’s Orchard History
By Modoc Harvest Modoc County residents will have a chance to celebrate the region’s deep-rooted apple-growing history this fall during the Heritage Apple Festival, a one-day event scheduled for Saturday, October 11, 2025, 10am-2pm at The Marchy Barn in Lake City, CA. The festival is free to attend and open to the public. The event is organized by the Heritage Fruit Tree Project, an initiative of Modoc Harvest focused on identifying and preserving heirloom fruit tree varieties throughout the county. It is funded through the California Open Farm Passport, an agritourism grant program designed to boost on-farm sales for specialty crop growers across the state, and donations to Modoc Harvest. “This event is entirely apple-themed,” said Ary West, Executive Director of Modoc Harvest. “It’s a way
to bring people together to celebrate our local apple varieties, many of which have been growing here for over a century. And it’s also a way to raise awareness– and hopefully some support– for the preservation work we’re doing through the Heritage Fruit Tree Project.” The festival will feature a pop-up apple market where visitors can purchase fresh apples and value-added apple products directly from Modoc County growers. At the Heritage Fruit Tree Project booth, attendees can learn about local heirloom apple varieties, view samples of apples collected across the county, explore the results of ongoing DNA testing, and even bring in their own apples for on-site variety identification by the HFTP team. Guests can watch the UC Master Food Preservers demonstrate how to make applesauce/apple butter, enjoy hands-on apple pressing at two cider stations running throughout the event, and enter their own homemade apple pie in our pie contest! Children’s apple-themed activities will be provided by Alturas Early Head Start and First 5 Modoc, with music and a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere rounding out the event.

CAL FIRE Suspends Burn Permits in Lassen, Modoc and Plumas Counties The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) has suspended all burn permits and other uses of open fire in Lassen, Modoc and Plumas counties effective 8 a.m. Friday, June 13, 2025, due to extreme fire danger across the region. The suspension comes as critical fire weather conditions and dry vegetation create a high risk of wildfire. Fire suppression resources are already heavily committed across the state, prompting officials to take preventive action. “Due to the extreme menace of destruction by fire to life, property and natural resources, all burn permits are suspended until further notice,” said Eric Ewing, CAL FIRE LassenModoc Unit Chief, in a statement announcing the proclamation. The suspension applies to all State Responsibility Area lands within the three counties. Open burning of any kind—including yard debris, agricultural

waste or other material—is prohibited. Campfires on private property are still allowed with written permission from the property owner if they are not present, but CAL FIRE officials emphasize that all campfires must be properly contained and monitored to prevent spread into wildland areas. Under Section 4423.2 of the California Public Resources Code, CAL FIRE rangers or other authorized representatives may issue restricted, temporary burning permits if burning is deemed essential for public health, safety or welfare. The order will remain in effect until it is formally terminated by CAL FIRE. Residents are urged to follow local fire restrictions and practice extreme caution when working or recreating outdoors. Lassen Highway 36 Emergency Work Causes Long-Term One-Way Delays Emergency work has begun on Highway 36 in Lassen County, creating long-term one-way traffic control and delays for motorists. This vital route faces indefinite 10-minute hold-ups starting on Monday, affecting a stretch west of Route 44. Drivers should prepare for significant travel time adjustments. This emergency work is critical for maintaining the safety and integrity of Highway 36, a major artery connecting communities across Lassen County and to Shasta County. The extended duration of these repairs signals a serious issue, requiring necessary traffic adjustments for public safety. The impacted section of Highway 36 lies between 7.2 miles and 6.7 miles west of the intersection with Route 44. This specific area will experience one-way traffic flow. Additionally, the right shoulder of the highway will be closed during these operations, further narrowing the roadway. Motorists should anticipate at least a 10-minute delay
and prepare for indefinite, long-term conditions.
