Cal Fire Lassen-Modoc Unit-Facebook
The Modoc Braves football team has always been known for its grit, teamwork, and pride on the field—but recently, the players proved that their strength extends far beyond Friday night lights. Over the past week, the Braves have shown what it truly means to wear the Modoc colors with pride, stepping up to serve the community that has supported them every step of the way.
The CAL FIRE Lassen Modoc Unit, in collaboration with the Modoc Fire Safe Council and Alturas Elementary School, recently led a vital Fire Prevention Week program for local students. Focusing on this year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” students received handson training inside the initiative, shared by the CAL FIRE Lassen Modoc
Their first stop was the Warnerview Skilled Nursing Facility under the direction of Cece Toaetolu, where players from both JV and Varsity spent time visiting with the residents, playing board games and doing chores outside the facility. The laughter and smiles that filled the halls were a reminder that simple acts of kindness can have a lasting impact. For the team, it wasn’t just about volunteering—it was about honoring those who built the foundation of the place they call home.

Next, the Braves headed out to the Lazy-B Grill, a familiar local restaurant that needed some hands-on help restoring its outdoor spaces. With teamwork and determination, the players worked together to clear weeds, remove debris, and restore the area’s natural beauty. Their efforts not only improved the landscape but also strengthened their bond as teammates and community members.
Veterans Day is a time for reflection, gratitude and community. This November, Modoc Record is preparing a special guide dedicated to honoring the men and women who have served in the nation’s armed forces.
The guide will feature profiles of local veterans, community events, support resources and ways for residents to get involved. It will be printed and distributed throughout Modoc and Lassen counties.

The team has become a symbol of what makes Modoc County so special: neighbors helping neighbors, young people learning from their elders, and everyone working together to keep the community strong. Local businesses, parents, and fans continually show their support through sponsorships, donations, and loud cheers on game nights. The players recognize that their success is built on that support, and giving back is their way of saying thank you.

As the Braves continue their season, they carry with them the pride of knowing they’ve made a real difference. Their actions serve as a powerful reminder to the younger generation: never forget where you come from and always give back to the community that made you who you are. Modoc County is more than a hometown—it’s a family, a legacy, and a place where our sponsors, supporters, and residents live, grow, and thrive together.
The guide aims to provide both inspiration and practical resources, ensuring local stories of courage and commitment are remembered and celebrated.

The Modoc Braves have shown that true champions aren’t just made under the lights—they’re made through service, gratitude, and a deep love for the community they represent.
This week’s edition comes with a small story behind the scenes. Our advertising and network systems experienced unexpected technical issues, which prevented us from accessing our working files. Under a tight deadline — and a bit of creative pressure — we rebuilt this week’s paper using last week’s PDF as a base.
It’s not our usual process, and you may notice a few differences in fonts and layout. Still, we felt it was important to keep the Record on schedule and in your hands as always Thank you for your patience and continued support. We’ll be back to normal operations very soon!

THE MAIL service between Reno and Alturas comes mighty near to being no service at all. The mail reaches Madeline, lays overnight there, then comes to Likely and once in a while reaches Alturas. As now arranged, our mail is from 10 to15 hours later than when it comes by stage to Madeline. Better to send by way of Redding on the stagecoach, as we could then depend on getting it once in a while. It just proves the government doesn’t care a continental about the rights of people in Modoc and Lake Counties.

Dear Editor,
In response to Jeff Middlebrook’s letter to the editor.
Thank you for voting on an honest California ballot issue. And by honest I mean a ballot that clearly defines the goal of ensuring fair representation in Congress. Make no mistake Proposition 50 would not be here if not for the election rigging by the Texas Republicans.
In California we have a fair independent board that defines our voting districts. This independent board is how a democracy should work. However, in Texas they have no independent board instead voting districts are
at the hands of the political party in power. The Texas Republican Congress created partisan drawn voting districts designed to increase the number of Republican Representatives in our House of Representative. This is a clear affront to democracy.
Proposition 50 is in response to this attempt to steal control of Congress by the Texas Republicans. California Proposition 50 will automatically revert back to our independent board in 2030. I urge all to vote yes on ballot measure 50 to counteract the undemocratic intent of the Republicans.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Lassen-Modoc Unit announced that the burn permit suspension in Lassen, Modoc, and Plumas counties were lifted effective Monday, Oct. 13, 2025, at 6 a.m.
Unit Chief Eric Ewing said residents holding valid agricultural and residential burn permits may now resume burning on permissible burn days. Agricultural burns must still be inspected by CAL FIRE before burning until the end of peak fire season. Some other burns may also require inspection; residents should confirm requirements with their local Air Quality Management District.
Burn permits are still required until further notice. Cooler temperatures, increased humidity, and the potential for winter weather have begun to

reduce wildfire risk, but CAL FIRE urges residents to remain cautious. Anyone who allows a fire to escape their control may face civil or criminal penalties.
Residents must confirm that it is a permissive burn day before burning. Call the Lassen, Modoc, and Plumas Air Pollution Control Districts at (530)

On September 29, 2025, Clark Matthew Bales went home to be with the Lord, his faith carrying him into eternal peace. A devoted Christian, Clark lived his life guided by faith, kindness, and compassion. Born on July 11, 1959, in Norwalk, California, he spent 66 years filled with a deep love for his family and community. He was a good man with a generous heart who faced life’s challenges with perseverance and faith. Though his journey was not without hardship, Clark’s enduring love for his family and trust in God’s plan remained constant.
In 1987, Clark moved his young family from Southern California to Modoc County, a place he had fallen in love with as a 17-year-old visiting his family’s property during the summer of 1976. In the 38 years he lived in Alturas, his deep appreciation for the land and the people of Modoc never faded. Clark was passionate about helping others and took pride in his years as an employment counselor for the County of Modoc in the 1990s. He often spoke of how meaningful it was to help people find jobs and better their lives.
A die-hard Los Angeles

Thirty California district attorneys have announced their opposition to Proposition 50, a statewide ballot measure that would eliminate the state’s independent redistricting commission and return the power to draw congressional boundaries to the Legislature.
Rams fan, Clark loved football almost as much as he loved a good conversation. In a fitting reflection of his lifelong devotion, he watched his final Rams game just hours before his passing. He shared a special bond with his identical twin brother, Mark Bales, with whom he remained close for his entire life.
Clark is survived by his daughters, Elaine (Jayson) West of Puyallup, Washington, and Rebecca Bales of Canby, California; his exwife, Alice (Ulfers) Bales, and his stepson, Brian Massey (Analisa), all of Alturas, California. He is also survived by his twin brother, Mark Bales, and his niece, Mary Shaylean Bales, both of Missouri; and his beloved grandchildren— Dylan and Owen West, Aliviah and Arabella Wilton, and Brian Massey Jr as well as a multitude of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Virginia Bales of Alturas. Clark will be remembered for his big heart, his love of football, and his unwavering devotion to his family. His faith, compassion, and laughter will continue to live on in those who knew and loved him.
In a joint statement, the prosecutors said Proposition 50 would “dismantle voter-approved reforms” and “undermine democracy by prioritizing politicians’ power.” The measure, they said, reverses changes approved by voters through Proposition 11 in 2008 and Proposition 20 in 2010, which created and later expanded the California Citizens
Redistricting Commission.
The district attorneys argued that the commission has ensured fair representation by independently redrawing electoral districts after each census. Proposition 50, they said, would allow lawmakers to “secretly craft new congressional maps” before the next census, potentially dividing communities and weakening public trust in government.
The statement also criticized the projected cost of the special election—estimated at $300 million—saying those funds could be used instead to support Proposition 36’s drug treatment programs.
“Partisan gerrymandering is

fundamentally wrong, regardless of who perpetrates it or where it occurs,” the letter said. “Two wrongs do not make a right.”
Among those signing the letter were Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman, San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan, and Fresno County District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp.
The prosecutors said they were urging Californians to vote against Proposition 50, calling it an effort that “threatens fair representation and wastes resources on undoing voter-approved reforms.”
Proposition 50 will appear on the November ballot.

The California Highway Patrol’s Alturas Area Office reported significant results following a 90-day enforcement campaign along the U.S. Highway 395 from the Oregon border to the Nevada line.
The campaign, conducted in partnership with CHP offices in Susanville and Quincy, aimed to reduce injury and fatal collisions on the busy corridor. Officers focused on primary collision factors such as speeding, unsafe passing, impaired driving and commercial vehicle violations.
In addition to enforcement,
CHP officers emphasized traffic safety education through social media, in-person outreach and traditional media.
According to CHP Commander Danny Koetsier, the Alturas Area saw a 109% increase in DUI arrests compared with the previous three-year average for the same period. The area also recorded a 22% decrease in overall traffic collisions.
The CHP reminds motorists to practice safe driving habits:
• Leave early to avoid rushing.
• Be patient at passing zones.
• Avoid distracted driving.
• Always wear seat belts and ensure children are properly restrained.
• Never drive under the influence; designate a sober driver.
• Maintain a safe following distance and obey speed limits.
Reckless or suspected DUI drivers can be reported by calling 9-1-1, which connects directly to CHP dispatch centers available 24/7.
The California Highway Patrol’s mission is to provide the highest level of safety, service and security to the public.

Rural community and business leaders from across California raised $115,200 to benefit 10 Modoc County nonprofits, the Rural County Representatives of California (RCRC) announced Tuesday.
The funds were presented during the Modoc County Board of Supervisors meeting, following RCRC’s 2025 Annual Meeting in September. The money was raised through the organization’s annual County Basket Drawing and Auction, which features county-themed baskets from each of RCRC’s 40 member counties.
“These contributions are more than just a donation; they are a powerful investment in the future and well-being of Modoc County,” said RCRC Board Chair and Modoc County Supervisor Geri Byrne. “The funds raised through the Annual Meeting’s auction will strengthen the vital work of ten exceptional local
nonprofits, supporting their ongoing efforts to improve the lives of our residents.”
This year’s auction total marked a record amount. The proceeds will support the following organizations: Modoc County 4-H, Calvada History Foundation, Modoc Harvest (Historic Fruit Project), Nevada-California-Oregon Railway, Modoc Economic Development Commission, Modoc County Sheriff ’s K-9 Association, Alturas Rotary Community Foundation, Strong Family Health Center, Tiny Mighty Strong, and the Adin Community Park Foundation.
The funds will help each organization continue its work to strengthen and support the Modoc County community.

The team fought hard and secured a well-earned win through strong serving and teamwork.

The Lady Braves will host Fall River on Tuesday for Senior Night and travel to Trinity on Wednesday, October 22, for their final game of the season.
After a tough blowout loss to Etna in their previous outing, the Modoc Braves bounced back in style Tuesday night, earning a hard-fought 3-1 victory over the Mt. Shasta Bears.
The win was sweet revenge for the Braves, who fell to the Bears by the same score earlier this season in September.
It didn’t come easy — Mt. Shasta battled hard, scoring at least 19 points in every set — but Modoc held strong to take the match 26-24, 16-25, 25-19, 25-21.
Senior standout Katie Erquiaga led the Braves’ attack with 13 kills, while Abigail Depaul chipped in with two assists and a team-high five aces from the service line.
The victory brings Modoc back to even at 11-11-2 on the season, while Mt. Shasta drops to 15-6-2, snapping a sixmatch home winning streak.
Next up, the Braves hit the road for a rivalry showdown against Fall River at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Despite a 1-1 deadlock at halftime, Modoc couldn’t keep pace with Mt. Shasta in the second half on Tuesday, falling 3-1 to the Bears. The loss was a reversal of their earlier meeting this season, when Modoc came out on top 1-1.
Tallon Young netted Modoc’s lone goal, marking his third of the season.
The Braves have hit a rough patch, dropping three of their last four matches and slipping to a 12-11 record overall. Mt. Shasta, meanwhile, extended
its home winning streak to five and improved to 8-6 on the year.
Modoc currently has no additional games on the schedule, while Mt. Shasta will hit the road to face Etna at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The CAL FIRE Lassen Modoc Unit, in partnership with Collins Pine Almanor Forest, will continue the Mooney Timber Understory Prescribed Burn beginning Friday, October 17, 2025. The burn is part of an ongoing effort to manage forest fuels and reduce wildfire risk in the region.
According to CAL FIRE officials, burning operations are expected to continue through the weekend and potentially into the following week, depending on weather and fuel conditions. The project is designed as a low-intensity timber understory burn, targeting areas of accumulated vegetation to help prevent future large-scale wildfires.
Smoke will be visible near Westwood and Clear Creek, and along California State Route 36 between Westwood and State Route 147. Motorists and residents are advised that prescribed burn signs will be posted along roadways to keep the public informed. CAL FIRE emphasized that there is no need to call 911 to report smoke from this controlled burn.
“The primary goal of this project is to reduce
receptive fuels adjacent to roadways,” said Fire Captain Robbie Whitchurch of CAL FIRE Lassen Modoc Unit. “By removing these fuels, we can help prevent roadside ignitions from developing into larger, more dangerous wildfires.”
The Mooney prescribed burn also supports broader regional fuel-reduction
initiatives, which aim to lessen the impact of future wildfires on nearby communities.
Residents seeking more information on wildfire preparedness and prevention can visit www.ReadyForWildfire.org.
For additional details about the prescribed burn, contact Fire Captain Rob-
bie Whitchurch at (530) 310-2254.
