Back Pain That Steals More Than Just Comfort
For many people living with chronic lower back pain, sciatica, spinal stenosis or degenerative disc disease, daily life becomes a negotiation with discomfort Bending to tie a shoe, lifting a grocery bag, or standing in line can trigger pain that radiates down the legs or locks the body in tension Sleep becomes disrupted, and mornings are often the hardest; waking with aching stiffness that makes even getting out of bed a struggle
Some experience a constant, dull ache; others describe sharp, shooting pain, numbness, or weakness in the legs In spinal stenosis, narrowing of the spinal canal compresses nerves, often mimicking sciatica or neuropathy Over time, people stop doing the things they love; not by choice, but because of pain, fear of flare-ups, or loss of mobility While some are offered injections

Angel Land Food Forest Surpasses Goal with Free Mango Tree Giveaway
Angel Land Food Forest, a 501(c)(3) charity founded in 2017, continues to grow Englewood’s future. On a recent Sunday morning, board members English Jan, Gela Gallant, and Joe Rispoli, along with a team of volunteers gave away fiftyseven 7-gallon grafted mango trees to local residents, surpassing the promised 50. Those who had preregistered picked up trees to plant in their yards here in Englewood. The nonprofit began with a mission of food redistribution, collecting and sharing groceries with pantries and hubs throughout Englewood. In 2021, they added a second branch: offering free mango trees to residents. To date, including this latest giveaway, the organization has provided 306 mango trees sourced from nurseries across Florida. Sunday’s event was made possible by the generosity of local partners and friends. Angel Land Food Forest extends heartfelt thanks to Elijah of FruitScapes, LLC for supplying the trees, Kathleen Callahan of Xpertech Auto Repairfor offering her parking lot for the distribution, and the volunteers who kept the morning running smoothly: Francesca Ledesma Wyman, Michael, Angelika Gallant, Karen Kelley, and Robbin Havens. All efforts are carried out by unpaid volunteers, with support from community donors. Anyone wishing to help grow a greener, more nourished Englewood can donate by calling 941-909-0500 or visiting AngelLandFoodForest.org.

The result is a gallery transformed into a space of quiet resistance—

Englewood Coalition Turns to the Arts to Keep Kids Safe and Inspired What began as a grassroots response to the fentanyl crisis in our country and the issue of teen substance abuse a decade ago has grown into a local and valuable 501c3 utilizing community partnerships. The Englewood Community Coalition, formed to keep the Greater Englewood area “safe, healthy and drug free,” was launched after Executive Director Kay Tvaroch secured federal funding through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Under the leadership of Kay, along with Kim Clark and Jeff Dillon, and the proactive Board of Directors, the group began offering prevention programs ranging from smoking cessation, drug education and beach cleanups and other healthy living alternatives. In 2023, Tvaroch helped expand the coalition’s mission by launching Englewood Creative Arts, an initiative designed to give children and families healthy, positive alternatives through arts education. “Our goal is to create a seminal moment in a child’s life that takes them in a new direction,” said Jeff Dillon, Director of Community Alliances ECA. “If they have a dream of becoming a professional actors or musician, we encourage that, however ECA’s goal is to help kids appreciate the arts, build confidence, and make healthy choices.” The first classes, Saturday guitar lessons at Elsie Quirk Library, launched in September 2024, quickly filled up. Since then, the program has expanded to include visual arts, drama, dance and drumming. Through partnerships with libraries, local musicians, theater instructors and dance academies, the classes are offered at little or no cost to
families. Loaner guitars are even provided for children who don’t have instruments at home. The coalition also collaborated this summer with Sarasota County libraries on the “Color Our World” program, combining art, dance and drama workshops. Parents praised the initiative, with some saying it was the first opportunity their children had to experience structured creative programming in Englewood. As the fall session begins, classes are scheduled at both Elsie Quirk and Charlotte libraries, with local musicians Paul Quinn and Kellen McCarthy leading guitar instruction. Drama and visual arts programming are also expanding, thanks to a growing roster of community partners. Beyond classes, coalition members remain active at community events, from hurricane-preparedness fairs to Fellowship Church festivals and Englewood’s annual Halloween Safe Walk. The organization will host its annual community meeting late in October, in Rotonda West featuring dinner, speakers and recognition of local leaders. Long-term, the coalition hopes to establish a permanent arts center in Englewood. A previous space was lost to Hurricane Ian, and leaders say having a dedicated facility would allow year-round after-school and weekend programming. “Ultimately, we want a place where kids can come and be exposed to all the Creative Arts — anything that gives them a healthy outlet,” Jeff said. Residents interested in volunteering, donating or enrolling children in classes can find information on the Englewood Community Coalition and Englewood Creative Arts Facebook pages or their website: englewoodcreativearts.org.

The following is a message from the Michael Saunders Englewood Team: In the heart of every challenge lies an opportunity to rise — and in Englewood, we rise together. At Michael Saunders & Company, our love for this community runs deep. When hurricanes struck, our mission was clear: to stand by our neighbors, help them rebuild, and bring hope where it was needed most.
Two days after witnessing our own office reduced to rubble, we refused to be defined by loss. Instead, we joined forces with Rowley Insurance, delivering meals and comfort to those facing unimaginable hardship. We knew then, as we know now, that buildings can be replaced — but people, their dignity, and their dreams must be cared for first.
This is what makes Englewood extraordinary. Compassion is our foundation, resilience is our strength, and love is our legacy.
We are proud to call this place home.
We are proud to stand together.
We are Forever Englewood Strong.
Michael

The event includes food, drinks, giveaways, and raffles, with only 40 seats available. Registration is required by Monday, September 1. For more information, contact Lora Graham at 239•671•0567 or Angela Fiordiliso at Medicalco@ humane.org.
Give a Shelter Pet a Mini Vacation
Life in the shelter is safe and loving, but nothing compares to new adventures, quiet time, and one-on-one companionship. Sarasota County’s Animal Services is inviting the community to take part in two short-term foster programs designed to give dogs a muchneeded break and help them shine for potential adopters. With
Doggie Day Out, participants can treat a pup to a fun day of walks, beach time, naps, or even a special “pup stop” for a treat before returning them to the shelter. For those seeking a little more time, the Weekend Warrior program allows families to welcome a dog into their home for a short stay filled with snuggles, walks, and relaxation. Both programs provide valuable insight into each dog’s personality outside the shelter, helping staff make the perfect adoption match while giving participants the joy of making a difference. To learn more visit humane.org or call 941•474•7887 ext. 413.
Puppy Mat Pilates
Strengthen your core while surrounded by puppies at Mat Pilates on Sunday, August 31 from 10:30 to 11:30am at Suncoast Humane Society, 2620 Worth Avenue. Instructor Samantha Stone will lead this one-hour session, which blends Pilates, yoga, calisthenics, and ballet to improve flexibility, balance, and body awareness. The class is suitable for all fitness levels and ages and can be adapted to individual needs. Bring your mat and water bottle—puppies are provided! Registration is required in advance, and the cost is $25 per person. Register at humane.org.
Pets s P Pagge e
These are just two of the many animals waiting for adoption. You can see all of Suncoast Humane Society’s adoptable animals by visiting their Website, www.humane.org.
Britney, a one-year-eightmonth-old, is a sweet feline, always up for a snuggle. Although she is the perfect “lap cat,” she also likes to play with toys. If you can provide Britney with a less active, quiet home, she will quickly become your best friend.
Two-year-old Waylon is a beautiful boy who would prefer to be the only dog in a quiet home without children. He loves to snuggle on the couch, swim, and play with toys. Waylon will thrive in a relaxed lifestyle home.
Pumpkin is a spayed female Chihuahua mix. She is twoyears-old and loves to cuddle. Pumpkin likes cats and kids and loves to ride in the car. She is housebroken and likes other dogs. Pumpkin is 11 ½ pounds.

Leia is a three-monthold, spayed female kitten. She has beautiful white markings on her gray stripe fur with a few light orange patches.
