Back Pain That Steals More Than Just Comfort
For many people living with chronic lower back pain, sciatica, spinal stenosis or degenerative disc disease, daily life becomes a negotiation with discomfort Bending to tie a shoe, lifting a grocery bag, or standing in line can trigger pain that radiates down the legs or locks the body in tension Sleep becomes disrupted, and mornings are often the hardest; waking with aching stiffness that makes even getting out of bed a struggle
Some experience a constant, dull ache; others describe sharp, shooting pain, numbness, or weakness in the legs In spinal stenosis, narrowing of the spinal canal compresses nerves, often mimicking sciatica or neuropathy Over time, people stop doing the things they love; not by choice, but because of pain, fear of flare-ups, or loss of mobility While some are offered injections
and safe riding for the whole family. The library is located at 401 Shreve Street in Punta Gorda. Registration is required at www.CharlotteCountyFL.gov/ libraries or by emailing Katelin Deushane at Katelin.Deushane@ CharlotteCountyFL.gov.

After
Years of Pain
Carol, a 72-year-old Venice resident, came to the clinic after years of worsening lower back pain Her discomfort radiated down her legs and made it difficult to drive, walk, or perform daily tasks
Mornings were especially hard, she often woke feeling locked in her body
Her Neurologist had prescribed medication, but it offered little relief She had started to withdraw from family activities, including walking her grandchildren to school, and the annual family cruise A thorough initial assessment at Sage Point Acupuncture revealed inflammation, postural compensations, and signs of nerve compression
Based on her new patient consultation, Carol was found to be a good candidate for care A personalized treatment plan was created using acupuncture, integrative medicine treatment, and corrective movement guidance to reduce pain and restore function
Over the following weeks, Carol noticed improvements in flexibility, confidence, and pain reduction By the end of her treatment plan, she had resumed walking short distances and was picking up her grandkids from school and taking them to their activities again Routines that once felt out of reach
There’s Still Time to Reclaim Your Life
Many patients at Sage Point Acupuncture experience improvements, even after years of symptoms, when the right support is in place If you’ve been sidelined by back pain or spinal issues, don’t wait. The tool features an interactive map, searchable project list, funding details, descriptions of repairs, and the storm events that caused the damage, with total
costs estimated to exceed $190 million. While awaiting FEMA funding for many efforts, the County Commission has authorized use of hurricane reserve funds to expedite key repairs, including the recently reopened Englewood Beach parking lot. Updated in real time, the dashboard offers residents an accessible way to follow progress on parks and amenities across the county.
New Online Tool for Flood Risk
The Charlotte County Community Development Department has launched a new online platform that will make floodplain information more accessible and easier to understand. “Forerunner” is a digital tool designed to help users better understand their flood risk, navigate compliance requirements, and make more informed decisions when it comes to flood preparedness. The platform will provide property-specific flood information, including FEMA flood zone designations, base flood elevations, and access to existing elevation certificates. Residents will also be able to submit digitally signed certificates and contact floodplain coordinators through the platform. Forerunner will be available at CharlotteCountyFL. gov/flood. Video tutorials and additional resources will also be made available to help users navigate the system. Forerunner also supports ongoing efforts to improve Charlotte County’s Community Rating System score, which can help reduce

flood insurance premiums for residents. For more information, contact Kellie Stewart at Kellie. Stewart@CharlotteCountyFL. gov.

Sandbag station location is 6874 San Casa Drive. Note: Sandbags are best suited for areas expecting less than 15 inches of flooding from rain or tides. They are not effective against storm surge or wave action from hurricanes. For more tips on hurricane preparation and flooding safety, visit CharlotteCountyFL.gov.
Sea Turtle Nesting Season
Sea turtle nesting season runs from now through October 31 in Charlotte County. Each year, loggerhead, green, and a few Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles come to our beaches to lay
their eggs. Stakes, flagging and signs marking the nest location can be seen up and down the shoreline. Charlotte County Parks and Natural Resources advises beach patrons to give the nests some space when setting up on the beach, fill in any holes and knock down sandcastles when you leave. If you’re on the beach at night, do not use flashlights or cell phone lights as they can deter nesting or confuse hatchlings returning to the water. For information, contact Alexandria Grant, Environmental Specialist at 941•613•3218 or Alexandria. Grant@charlottecountyfl.gov.

The Van Wezel’s marketing team received two awards in the Public Relations Programs Division for their “Beetlejuice” promotion in partnership with Hamlet’s Eatery: an Award of Distinction and a Judges’ Creativity Award. In the Collateral of Public Relations Division, the team earned an additional Award of Distinction and Judges’ Award for the “Coming Back Better Than Ever” midseason brochure. The Golden Image Awards celebrate strategic excellence, innovation, and measurable impact in public relations. The Award of Distinction is given to entries that meet a high standard of excellence, while the Judges’ Creativity and Judges’ Awards recognize entries that exhibit standout innovation and return on investment. Selina Román: Abstract Corpulence
Step into a luminous world of memory, identity, and reflection with “Through the Veil”, the first solo museum exhibition by artist Lillian Blades at the Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College, 1001 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. This immersive, site-specific installation invites visitors to wander through a suspended labyrinth of mixed-media veils crafted from acrylic, fabric, found materials, and shimmering surfaces, bathed in light from the museum’s central skylight tower. Inspired by her Bahamian heritage and her late mother’s legacy as a seamstress, Blades’ radiant color palette and intricate assemblages reflect themes of connection, transformation, and cultural discovery. The exhibition’s centerpiece is surrounded by wall-mounted works that further expand the viewer’s journey through layers of light, texture, and personal meaning. Curated by Lacie Barbour, “Through the Veil” runs now through October 26. To learn more visit
From August 31 through March 29, 2026, Sarasota Art Museum presents Selina Román: Abstract Corpulence, a striking new exhibition that reimagines the human form through abstraction and self-portraiture. Featuring bold, tightly cropped photographs of the artist’s own body, this series uses pastel bodysuits and tights to transform flesh into undulating, modernist landscapes. At once intimate and expansive, Román’s compositions challenge traditional notions of feminine beauty by shifting focus to line, color, and shape. The result is a gallery transformed into a space of quiet resistance— where softness, scale, and abstraction redefine the politics of body image. Curated by Rangsook Yoon, senior curator at Sarasota Art Museum, this never-before-seen installation continues the museum’s tradition of showcasing contemporary voices that provoke thought and inspire conversation. Ivy’s Boutique to Close, Leaving Legacy of Local Style and Connection
Ivy’s on Dearborn will close its doors at 7pm on Tuesday, August 26, marking the end of a chapter in Englewood’s retail scene. Owner Karen Tyree, who opened the shop in honor of her late mother, Ivy, said she wanted to end on a high note, preserving the store’s legacy as a vibrant part of the community.
Tyree’s journey began in 2008 after returning from England following her mother’s passing. Inspired by Ivy’s love for bargain hunting, she opened her first shop, Ivy’s Attic and later moved to Dearborn Street in 2013, when the historic district was struggling with limited foot traffic. Over time, she helped foster its revival, hosting monthly “sip and shop” events, fashion shows, private benefits, and fundraisers for local charities.
A longtime interior designer and community advocate, Tyree balanced running the boutique with ongoing philanthropic efforts, supporting numerous nonprofits and spearheading creative events that drew both locals and visitors. She credits Englewood’s close-knit spirit for sustaining her through challenges, including major storms, the pandemic, and economic downturns.
August 26, when the shop will host a closing party from 5 to 7pm. A storewide sale of 50% off is underway until closing day.
After nearly fifteen years in business and a long road back from Hurricane Ian, Paradise Island Contracting has broken ground on a new office and community bar in South Gulf Cove, the first commercial development away from the main highway. Owners Jaimie and Jason Walczak, who also run the Shipwreck Saloon, launched their business from home before moving to a McCall Road office in 2015. After Ian flooded that building, they resumed working from home while helping locals rebuild. In 2023, they bought a vacant lot in South Gulf Cove, betting on the area’s growth. The new site will house both their contracting office and “Paradise Pub,” a casual neighborhood bar. Construction is expected to wrap within a year. Pictured are L-R: Alexis, John, Jack, owners Jason & Jaimie Walczak, Darel, Robert, Noah and not pictured is Brian.
Tri-Chamber Business Connections
While the storefront will close, Ivy’s will continue online, and Tyree plans to focus on her health, home, and time with family in England. The boutique’s farewell coincides with Discover Dearborn on
For Tyree, the decision is about gratitude—leaving the community with fond memories of a shop that bore her mother’s name and reflected her vision for connection, style, and giving back.

Sea Turtle Lighting Recognition Program
Charlotte County Natural Resources is excited to announce the launch of the Sea Turtle Lighting Recognition Program, a pilot program designed to honor the outstanding efforts of our coastal community in protecting nesting sea turtles and their hatchlings. Natural Resources staff have been working closely with beachfront condos, businesses, and residents to reduce lighting violations that can disorient sea turtles, helping ensure the highest number of hatchlings make it safely to the ocean. This year, one commercial property on Englewood Beach and one residential condo on Manasota Key that demonstrate compliance with sea turtle lighting requirements will be awarded a Sea Turtle Lighting Recognition Certificate. These
Nature Calls
properties must be located within Charlotte County’s designated lighting zone and may be nominated based on inspections and compliance records. Award recipients will be announced in the fall and will be highlighted on Charlotte County’s official social media channels, recognizing their dedication to protecting our critical coastal habitat. Natural Resources hopes to expand the program to other barrier islands in the future. For information, contact Alexandria Grant at 941•613•3218 or email Alexandria.Grant@ CharlotteCountyFL.gov.
