Sea turtle nesting season runs from now through October 31 in Charlotte County. Each year, loggerhead, green, and a few Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles come to our beaches to lay their eggs. you’re on the beach at night, do not use flashlights or cell phone lights as they can deter nesting or confuse hatchlings returning to the water. For information, contact Alexandria Grant, Environmental Specialist at 941•613•3218 or Alexandria. Grant@charlottecountyfl.gov.

3 Underrated Gems You Probably Missed While You Were Rewatching “The Office” Again

Ah, the cinematic underdogs. The ones that slipped through the cracks while audiences were busy handing Oscars to prestige pieces or flocking to the latest superhero team-up. “Underrated” is subjective, of course, but let’s be honest—there are some really good movies out there that barely made a blip on the radar. Whether they were victims of bad marketing, inconvenient release dates, or just too emotionally intelligent for a world obsessed with explosions and multiverses, these films got buried.

So I’m digging them up for you. Three (picked from many) criminally overlooked movies from the past decade that really should’ve gotten more. They deserve a second chance—or a first, if you were busy in 2019 trying to figure out what a Peloton was. Dust off your watchlist, butter your popcorn, and prepare to text someone “why didn’t you tell me about this??” Let’s go:

Genre: Feminist period drama with bite

Star Rating: 4 out of 5.

If you’re a fan of Keira Knightley in corsets—but want her character to do more than sigh near candlelight, this one’s for you. She plays real-life French author Colette, who ghostwrote a series of wildly successful novels

while her husband soaked up all the fame. Yes, it’s infuriating. No, it’s not new. But the way Colette reclaims her name, her words, and her life? Chef’s kiss.

The costumes are divine, the settings are trés chic, and the lesbian subplot is handled with nuance instead of being reduced to “and then they made out in a hayloft.” Knightley is fierce, witty, and finally allowed to be more than a Regency-era girlfriend.

This movie should’ve been a bigger deal. Instead, it got buried under another superhero sequel, probably featuring some dude named Chad with a hammer.

Star Rating: 5 out of 5.

This movie. THIS. MOVIE. It’s the kind of film that makes you want to text your ex, call your mom, and write a poem - all at the same time.

Jimmie Fails (playing a version of himself) just wants his family’s old Victorian house back, the one his grandfather supposedly built in a now unrecognizable San Francisco. It’s about home, yes, but also about identity and friendship and how a city can love you and betray you in the same breath.

Visually? Gorgeous. Like, “pause and stare” gorgeous. Emotionally? A gut-punch. But in a gentle way, like being

emotionally mugged by a man with very kind eyes.

Bonus: the score is so pretty it’ll make you forgive the fact that you can’t afford a house either.

Genre: Existential rom-com with time loops and pool floats

Star Rating: 4 out of 5.

Palm Springs is one of those movies you put on expecting a quirky little comedy and end up spiraling into an emotional crisis, but like, in a fun way. Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti get

stuck in a time loop during a desert wedding and proceed to do what any of us would: drink, dance, prank people, and avoid emotional growth at all costs.

But then it sneaks up on you. Suddenly you’re rethinking your life choices, eating popcorn, and crying as your cat judges you from the foot of the bed.

The chemistry between the leads is magic, the dialogue crackles, and the existential dread is weirdly comforting.

It didn’t get a proper theatrical run because, well, 2020, but if there’s any justice left in this world, this one will age like wine and get the love it deserves.

Final thoughts…

So there you have it: three quiet bangers that got done dirty by the spotlight but are 100% worth your time. Whether you want to feel something (Last Black Man), rage against the patriarchy (Colette), or scream into the void with a cocktail in hand (Palm Springs), these movies deliver.

And hey, if you do end up watching one, tell a friend. Or better yet, tell Mr. Wanda. He still hasn’t forgiven me for making him sit through Cats, so I’m due for a redemption screening.

Twenty teens from Sarasota and Manatee counties participated in the first Bay Explorers Summer Experience, a free, all-inclusive environmental program hosted by Big Waters Land Trust and funded by the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program. Over five days, students explored the Sarasota Bay watershed, visiting coastal and freshwater habitats to learn about water quality, conservation, and local history. Activities included kayaking, birdwatching, snorkeling, and career sessions with professionals from regional organizations. Participants visited locations such as Robinson Preserve, FISH Preserve, the Cortez Cultural Center, Leffis Key Preserve, and the Celery Fields. They engaged with experts in stormwater management, land conservation, historical preservation, wildlife rescue, and prescribed fire practices. Each experience was designed to foster environmental awareness and introduce potential career paths in science and public service. The program eliminated barriers by offering transportation, meals, activity supplies, water shoes, and a $100 completion gift card. Community partners including the Robert L. Taylor Community Complex, Boys & Girls Clubs, Sarasota Housing Authority, and others supported outreach and participation. Big Waters Land Trust plans to expand the initiative in future years, continuing to connect youth with nature and environmental leadership opportunities. Gulf Coast Foundation Releases Updated 2025 Water Quality Playbook

The Gulf Coast Community Foundation has released a refreshed version of its Water Quality Playbook, an evidencebased guide aimed at improving the health of regional waterways. Originally launched in 2020, the updated 2025 edition reflects new data, recent accomplishments, and ongoing environmental challenges. Developed for community members, homeowners’ associations, and policymakers, the Playbook offers clear strategies to address nutrient pollution and restore water quality through public policy, education, and science. The revised digital format enables real-time updates to keep pace with changing environmental conditions. Since its initial release, collaborative efforts by local governments, nonprofits, and businesses have led to upgrades in wastewater infrastructure, expanded stormwater solutions, and innovative public-private partnerships. Despite these successes, water quality threats

persist. Elevated nutrient levels, seagrass loss, and climate impacts continue to challenge Sarasota County’s ecosystem health. The 2025 Playbook serves as a flexible, communitydriven resource to guide action and sustain progress. For full details and access, visit waterqualityplaybook.org.

Sea Turtle Lighting Recognition Program

Charlotte County Natural Resources is excited to announce the launch of the Sea Turtle Lighting Recognition Program, a pilot program designed to honor the outstanding efforts of our coastal community in protecting nesting sea turtles and their hatchlings. Natural Resources staff have been working closely with beachfront condos, businesses, and residents to reduce lighting violations that can disorient sea turtles, helping ensure the highest number of hatchlings make it safely to the ocean. This year, one commercial property on Englewood Beach and one residential condo on Manasota Key that demonstrate compliance with sea turtle lighting requirements will be

awarded a Sea Turtle Lighting Recognition Certificate. These properties must be located within Charlotte County’s designated lighting zone and may be nominated based on inspections and compliance records.

Properties that have partnered with the Sea Turtle Conservancy to upgrade their lighting systems may also be eligible for sponsorship of their award, thanks to the Conservancy’s generous support of local conservation efforts. Award recipients will be announced in the fall and will be highlighted on Charlotte County’s official social media channels, recognizing their dedication to protecting our critical coastal habitat. Natural Resources hopes to expand the program to other barrier islands in the future. For information, contact Alexandria Grant at 941•613•3218 or email Alexandria.Grant@ CharlotteCountyFL.gov.

Coyotes

in Florida: Learning to Coexist with a Clever Canine Once confined to the Great Plains, coyotes (Canis latrans) have expanded their range to all 67 Florida counties, including urban and suburban neighborhoods. Though their presence in Florida is relatively recent, coyotes are now a permanent part of the state’s wildlife, with populations estimated between 13,000 and 70,000. Weighing 25 to 30 pounds in Florida, coyotes are lankier than most domestic dogs and sport bushy tails with black tips. Their color ranges from light gray to yellowish-brown with pale undersides. Eastern coyotes tend to be larger due to historical interbreeding with gray wolves as they migrated eastward following the decline of their natural predator, the red wolf. Coyotes are crepuscular, most active at dawn and dusk, making them difficult to spot. Signs of their presence include narrow tracks about 2.5 inches long and scat containing fur or bones from prey. To prevent conflicts, residents are urged to be “Coyote Smart.” Feeding coyotes, intentionally or unintentionally, encourages them to associate humans with food. Secure trash, clean up fallen fruit, and supervise pets outdoors. If a coyote is encountered, hazing techniques like waving objects or using loud noises can discourage interaction. Coyotes play an important role in Florida’s ecosystems but must be managed wisely. Unusual or aggressive behavior should be reported to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). As coyotes continue to thrive in Florida, informed and proactive coexistence is essential.

Florida’s Wild Cats: How to Spot the Difference Between Bobcats and Panthers

Florida is home to two elusive and captivating wild cats: the common bobcat and the endangered Florida panther. While the odds of encountering a bobcat are higher due to its semi-urban adaptability, both species play important roles in the state’s natural ecosystems. Knowing how to distinguish between them is essential for wildlife enthusiasts, residents, and outdoor adventurers. The Florida panther (Puma concolor coryi) is a subspecies of the cougar and is much larger than the bobcat (Lynx rufus). Adult panthers can weigh up to 130 pounds and stand thigh-high to an adult human. In contrast, bobcats average around 15 to 40 pounds and rarely reach above knee height. Tail length is another reliable identifier. Panthers have long, thick tails that nearly touch the ground, while bobcats sport short, “bobbed” tails that curl upward, exposing a white underside. Coat patterns and coloration provide further clues. Adult panthers display a solid tawny coat with no spots, while bobcats retain spotted, reddish-brown fur and a white “beard” throughout their lives. Ear markings also differ. Bobcats have white patches on the backs of their ears, while panthers have black.

Back Pain That Steals More Than Just Comfort

For many people living with chronic lower back pain, sciatica, spinal stenosis or degenerative disc disease, daily life becomes a negotiation with discomfort Bending to tie a shoe, lifting a grocery bag, or standing in line can trigger pain that radiates down the legs or locks the body in tension Sleep becomes disrupted, and mornings are often the hardest; waking with aching stiffness that makes even getting out of bed a struggle

Some experience a constant, dull ache; others describe sharp, shooting pain, numbness, or weakness in the legs In spinal stenosis, narrowing of the spinal canal compresses nerves, often mimicking sciatica or neuropathy Over time, people stop doing the things they love; not by choice, but because of pain, fear of flare-ups, or loss of mobility While some are offered injections

When pain disrupts even the simplest routines, the right treatment can change everything

or surgery, many are told to simply manage their symptoms with medication When discomfort starts to steal the moments that matter most, it’s time to consider a new approach

An Integrative Alternative

At Sage Point Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine in Venice, FL, founder Lauren Milligan and her team offer non-invasive, drug-free options for chronic back pain and spinal conditions

Every patient begins with a comprehensive assessment to determine whether they are a candidate for care This may include a physical exam and functional testing to evaluate nerve irritation, muscle tension, inflammation, and movement patterns

When appropriate, the clinic provides a personalized treatment plan designed to reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and support healing using a blend of acupuncture and advanced integrative therapies “We focus on what’s driving the pain, not just where it hurts,” says Dr Milligan “And we tailor every care plan to the specific individual ”

Patient Case Study: Restoring Confidence

After Years of Pain

Carol, a 72-year-old Venice resident, came to the clinic after years of worsening lower back pain Her discomfort radiated down her legs and made it difficult to drive, walk, or perform daily tasks

Mornings were especially hard, she often woke feeling locked in her body

Her Neurologist had prescribed medication, but it offered little relief She had started to withdraw from family activities, including walking her grandchildren to school, and the annual family cruise A thorough initial assessment at Sage Point Acupuncture revealed inflammation, postural compensations, and signs of nerve compression

Based on her new patient consultation, Carol was found to be a good candidate for care A personalized treatment plan was created using acupuncture, integrative medicine treatment, and corrective movement guidance to reduce pain and restore function

Over the following weeks, Carol noticed improvements in flexibility, confidence, and pain reduction By the end of her treatment plan, she had resumed walking short distances and was picking up her grandkids from school and taking them to their activities again Routines that once felt out of reach

There’s Still Time to Reclaim Your Life

Many patients at Sage Point Acupuncture experience improvements, even after years of symptoms, when the right support is in place If you’ve been sidelined by back pain or spinal issues, don’t wait Your next chapter doesn’t have to be written in pain Call today to set up a consultation at (941) 451 - 8154

DOGS at WORK

Dogs At Work: Bella

Meet Bella, a middle-aged Dutch Shepherd who works at the Englewood Review. She loves to roll around in dirt and chase lizards and frogs. When she is on the job, she tends to sleep through most of the workday. Bella is terrified of thunderstorms, fireworks and other loud noises, which is why she never completed the training to become a police dog. She is very friendly and does not like to be ignored, so be sure to pet her or offer a belly rub!. She enjoys giving hugs and being close to people, especially her family. She is perfect for the job of greeting customers at the office because of her gentle demeanor. Fate brought Bella from Louisiana to a shelter in Florida and we became a family.
