CEO of New Sci-Fi Museum Steps Down Before Grand Opening, Interior Premiere Delayed
The Delay Also Comes as Staff is Handling Regulatory Compliance with Local Officials
By Zach ArmstrongOuter space, futurism and fantasy enthusiasts looked forward to Memorial Day for a first look inside Santa Monica’s latest tourist attraction: SCI-FI WORLD: The Experience. The new museum, located within the former Sears building on Colorado Ave. just a short walk from the Pier, set a May 27 grand opening date for its 30,000 sq. ft. display of movie props, costumes and replicas.
Unfortunately, the event did not go as originally planned.
Rather than being held inside the museum, the Gala took place in its closed
off parking lot with some artifacts brought outside for photo opportunities. Many of the patrons were refunded, but as one attendee put it on social media, “it’s kind of hard to reschedule something when people like me have already paid for their flights and hotel stay that are non-refundable.”
The let down comes as unpaid volunteers of the museum now confront a turbulent staffing situation and are handling regulatory compliance with local officials.
In the weeks leading up to opening day, executive producer for the Titanic –Movie Tour and now-former CEO of SCI Fi WORLD John Purdy quit his position along with two members of its managing staff. From there, remaining volunteers tried working with City officials and building ownership to meet permit and code requirements in time for the premiere. But when May 27 arrived, the interior wasn’t prepared for visitors.
“We have a new CEO whose name we will reveal soon, and is a well-known horror producer/director,” the museum stated in a Facebook post. “After the [opening] we will reorganize with our new team, and see what is needed from the city to get us open. Hopefully we can get this done in a
few weeks. What we refuse to do is give up, and to quote a certain captain, we don’t believe in a no-win scenario.”
A visit to the non-profit museum is a dream come true for a sci-fi & fantasy geek, as the space is abound with original props and replicas from seemingly every iconic TV show and film of the genre.
These include: The Enterprise Bridge set from Star Trek: The Next Generation, the 25 foot bubbleship from Oblivion, a full size Alien Queen and Powerloader from Aliens, along with artifacts from Doctor Who, Planet of the Apes and Lord of the Rings. The museum’s latest acquisition, the 10 Forward set from Paramount+ Star Trek Picard, was used in the opening of Picard episode one, season one, starring Sir Patrick Stuart and Brent Spiner.
Tickets for the exhibit were set to go for $20/children and $30/adults, with discounts for seniors, military and first responders and free admission for those under 6 or over 90. Annual memberships start at $60.
Sci-Fi World started out in 2012 as New Starship Foundation. Its initial mission was to preserve a Paramount-built Star Trek Enterprise-D display bridge, as seen

on Star Trek: The Next Generation, its website explains. Over the years, NSF gained support from Star Trek stars such as William Shatner and George Takei. Additional support was gained, from the cast and crew of shows including Battlestar Galactica and Doctor Who, to include the creation of Sci-Fi World to NSF’s mission. The Foundation has raised over $200,000 from supporters, according to its website. “The city and police have been wonderful to us and really want us to succeed. Everyone of us is an unpaid volunteer right now, a new CEO is coming, but there’s still a lot to figure out.” a spokesperson stated in a message. “All we want is for this to open and for people to enjoy it and to hopefully be a successful nonprofit.”
City Files Lawsuit Against Landlord Over
Alleged Discrimination and Harassment
Santa Monica’s Housing Antidiscrimination Ordinance Prohibits Discrimination by Landlords Against
Tenants With Disabilities
The City of Santa Monica’s Attorney’s Office Consumer Protection Unit has filed a lawsuit against Masoud Atef, a landlord of a rent-controlled property, alleging violations of local laws protecting tenants against housing discrimination and harassment, according to a City news release.
The city alleges that Atef intentionally discriminated against a tenant with a disability. The tenant, who is immunocompromised and has lived at the property since 2021, requested multiple times in the past year for reasonable accommodation to remediate toxic mold in her unit and to be temporarily relocated during the process. Atef allegedly refused the request, stating that his building is not suitable for tenants with “special conditions” or those with respiratory issues.
Santa Monica’s Housing AntiDiscrimination Ordinance prohibits discrimination by landlords against tenants with disabilities. The ordinance requires landlords to make reasonable accommodations for disabled tenants, prohibits discriminatory statements, and forbids making rental units unavailable due to a tenant’s disability.
The complaint also alleges that Atef has harassed tenants in multiple units at the property, including demanding tenants move out without legal basis, demanding
entry without notice, yelling at tenants in front of their children, and cutting off access to common areas in retaliation for exercising their legal rights.

The city’s lawsuit seeks a court order to prevent future harassment and discrimination, mandate fair housing training for Atef, grant the tenant’s accommodation request, and restore housing services. The suit also seeks monetary damages, punitive damages, attorneys’ fees, and other relief.

Main Street Pottery Shop Reprimands Staff for Dumping Glaze in Storm Drain

The business also stated staff members will undergo training on how to properly dispose of glaze
By Zach ArmstrongColor Me Mine, a pottery paint shop with an outpost along Santa Monica’s Main Street, says some staff members were reprimanded after an online video showed glaze being dumped down a storm drain.
The footage, which was met with uproar over environmental damage, shows an
individual pouring a green liquid into a drain, while ‘No Dumping. This drain leads to ocean’ is clearly spelled above the drain.
The business, whose Westside storefront is at 2525 Main St., said in a statement that the glaze was non-toxic, water-based and soluble, but that “doesn’t excuse it from being dumped in the storm drain.” It went on to say it is working with the City to pay for and that this is the only time in 15 years of operations such an incident has occurred.
“The City of Santa Monica is a city that prides itself on its lovely beaches and having been a part of the community for many years, we are ashamed that such a huge mistake was caused by one of our own.” said the business in a statement.
The business also stated staff members will undergo training on how to properly dispose of glaze and that it “doesn’t expect forgiveness,” but hopes it can earn it.

City Files Lawsuit Against Motel Owners For Allegedly Allowing Drug Activity
A Court Order Could Close the Motel for One Year and Require Changes to Management
By Zach ArmstrongA lawsuit has been filed against two Westside motel owners by the Santa Monica City Attorney’s Office, alleging the establishment creates a dangerous environment for its neighborhood by allowing drug deals, fights and more. If the City wins the verdict, a court order could close the motel for one year and require changes to management.
The Pavilions Motel, located just west of Clover Park and within blocks of Grant Elementary School, has been the site of several drug-related arrests throughout its 30-year-history, the lawsuit asserts.
This year, two executed search warrants recovered methamphetamine and fentanyl,
along with baggies, scales and weapons in and around the motel. In 2007, Pavilions was part of a joint code enforcement and police operation which temporarily closed the business and led to the arrests of several people, including its owner, Saeed Farzam. Of five dead bodies found at the property since 2019, three were connected to drug abuse, the complaint alleges.
Nuisance activity continues to occur at the motel, the complaint states, with routine drug transactions taking place in its parking lot (which shares an alleyway with residential buildings) or through its windows. Various other illicit activities, such as prostitution and building violations, continue to plague Pavilions, the lawsuit states.
Chief of Police Ramon Batista said in a news release that the motel had an “outsized impact” on the deployment of police resources for years. According to the lawsuit, police regularly conduct enforcement at and around the Motel for up to a few weeks at a time.
Pavilions is owned and managed by Farzam along with Goharshad Farzam, who the complaint claims have violated the state Drug Abatement Act, state public nuisance laws and Santa Monica public nuisance law due to the perpetual illicit activity. The motel was not immediately

able to respond to inquiry from Mirror Media Group.
Founded by the Farzams in 1990, Pavilions is a 20-unit budget motel along Ocean Park Boulevard. According to hotelscombined.com, the lodge’s cheapest per-night rate hovers around $100.
The lawsuit cites several posts dating back to 2011 from business-review websites where guests recounted unpleasant experiences. One Expedia reviewer stated in 2017 that groups of several people would rent rooms, stay drunk all night and get into fights. A Google review from late last year described Pavilions as the worst L.A. motel on account of cockroaches, the smell of methamphetamine smoke and constant fighting from other lodgers.
“Property owners are responsible for ensuring that their properties are not a nuisance or a danger to the neighborhood, and the city will hold them accountable when they fail to do so,” said City Attorney Douglas Sloan in a release.
The lawsuit seeks a court order to end drug activities, require physical and managerial improvements to the property, close the property for one year, seeks $25,000 in civil penalties per defendant and recovery of the city’s costs in investigating and abating the nuisance.
The People of the State of California and the City of Santa Monica v. Saeed Farzam, Goharshad Farzam, and Pavilions Motel, Inc, has been assigned to Department 207 in the Beverly Hills Courthouse.

The Challenge of Running a City When City Staff Have Different Priorities
When Ideology Enters the Picture
Santa Monica Architects for a Responsible Tomorrow
Living in a city has its perks, but it can be a real headache when the folks running the show don’t seem to care about what matters to us. One of the biggest challenges is city staff having different priorities and ideas than we do. This disconnect can make city life feel like an uphill battle.
Why Our Priorities Clash
City staff and voters often see things differently. City staff—those planners and bureaucrats—focus on long-term goals and keeping the machine running smoothly. They make decisions based on expertise and a need for stability.
We, voters and residents, care about the here and now. Our concerns come from our daily lives, economic conditions, and political promises. While city staff might dream about future infrastructure, we’re worried about the potholes on our streets today or the lack of parking spots in our neighborhoods.
This is where the friction starts. City staff push for projects they believe will benefit the city in the long run. But we want immediate fixes— solutions that make our lives easier right now, and more aligned with our desires for the city.
Things get even trickier when city staff have their own ideological agenda. Sometimes, they push policies based on personal beliefs rather than what the community may want. For example, they might prioritize green initiatives like bike lanes, even if most of us rely on cars and are more concerned about traffic jams. Or, they might focus on building affordable housing to promote social equity, while we worry about increased congestion, pollution, and traffic in our neighborhoods.
The Impact on Getting Things Done
When voters and city staff don’t see eye to eye, it can stall progress. City staff, driven by their expertise and sometimes their ideology, might champion certain projects. But if these projects don’t match our priorities, elected officials might block them to keep us happy, or might go along with them believing there are no alternatives.
For instance, if city staff are all about environmental sustainability, they might push for policies that, intentionally or not, limit certain businesses or developments, and especially smaller mom-and-pop businesses. While these might be seen as having benefits in the long run, they could also choke economic growth and local job opportunities, which are immediate concerns for us. Elected officials, wanting to keep us content, might hesitate to

support these initiatives, or, alternatively, following staff directions, might support them believing that there’s a payoff for the city in the long term.

Bridging the Gap Through Effective Involvement

So, how do we bridge the gap when city staff and voters have different priorities, especially with ideology in the mix? The secret sauce is involving us effectively in decision-making. Here’s how:
• Clear Communication: We need city staff to be open and honest about their plans. Regular updates on decisions and long-term benefits help us understand their vision and build trust.
• Respectful Involvement: It’s crucial for city staff to genuinely involve us in the decision-making process and respect our wishes. Tools like participatory budgeting, public consultations, and community workshops should be real opportunities for us to influence decisions, not just formalities.
• Education and Advocacy: We need to know the ins and outs of city management and why long-term planning matters. City staff should use local media, social platforms, and community events to explain their agendas and benefits. They should also be upfront about their ideological motivations and how their policies aim to benefit us all, if they do.

• Collaborative Leadership: Elected officials, city staff, and voters need to be teammates, not opponents. Mutual respect and understanding are key. Leadership training and team-building activities can help strengthen these relationships, as well as transparency and honesty.
• Flexibility and Compromise: City
staff, voters, and elected officials need to be open to compromise. City staff should consider our immediate needs, and elected officials should appreciate expert advice on long-term decisions. City staff should also be willing to adjust their ideological goals when they clash too strongly with practical needs.
Managing a city where the staff’s agenda differs from that of the voters is tough, but not impossible. City leaders can navigate these complexities by focusing on better communication, involving us in decisions in a truly meaningful way, educating the public, fostering collaborative leadership, and being open to compromise,. The goal is to create a balanced environment where both the expertise of city staff and our democratic voice are respected. This balance is essential for the city’s sustainable development and the well-being of everyone living here. When ideological differences are openly discussed and negotiated, and when our involvement in decision-making is genuinely respected, we can find common ground that supports both the immediate and long-term needs of the community.

Santa Monica Hotel’s New Look and Enhanced Amenities Transform Lincoln Boulevard
Owner Announces Upcoming Versatile Event Space
By Susan PayneSituated at the vibrant intersection of Grant Street and Lincoln Boulevard, the newly rebranded Santa Monica Hotel is casting a new light on the neighborhood with its refreshed façade and enhanced amenities. Jon Farzam, the visionary owner, is set to repurpose the hotel’s parking lot, providing the Santa Monica community with a novel outdoor event space that

promises versatility and charm.
Over the past four months, the transformation of this 30-room gem, previously known as the Santa Monica Motel, has been remarkable. Introducing a brighter color scheme, an engaging mural by a local artist, and strategically placed lighting that accentuates the central palm tree, the property has received a comprehensive makeover. The revamped courtyard now serves as a welcoming lounge, complete with breakfast service and access to electric bikes, enhancing guests’ experiences as they explore local cafes, shops, and the iconic Santa Monica Beach.
Addressing the outdated motel concept, Farzam was motivated by positive guest feedback to elevate the establishment’s status. “The transformation from a motel to a hotel reflects our commitment to providing an environment that exceeds guest expectations,” Farzam commented, emphasizing the importance of shedding the motel’s old persona for a more deserving, refined identity.
Highlighting the hotel’s unique features, Farzam adds, “Santa Monica Hotel now offers a fantastically unique backdrop for film and photography projects, echoing the creative spirit of our city.” The newly refreshed guestroom décor, featuring

stunning palm frond wallpaper and exquisite rattan furniture, ushers guests into vacation mode instantly. Modern amenities such as LED mirrors, Nespresso machines, and device charging stations in every room, along with table-top games on the patio, ensure a blend of comfort and entertainment.
To further enhance guest experience, the Santa Monica Hotel is proud to introduce a new texting service, allowing guests to seamlessly communicate with guest services for any requests, including ordering snacks and drinks directly to their room. This service ensures that our guests’ needs are met promptly and efficiently, providing an even more relaxed and catered stay.
Strategically located near the famous Third Street Promenade, the hotel offers
guests immediate access to this renowned outdoor shopping and dining esplanade, enhancing their stay with convenience and local culture.
The hotel’s intimate size fosters a cozy, personalized atmosphere, where the staff’s dedication to service shines through in thoughtful gestures, including handwritten notes for special occasions. “Our aim is to make every stay memorable, treating our guests to unparalleled hospitality and comfort,” Farzam asserts.
Looking ahead, the Santa Monica Hotel is preparing to launch a new phase in its evolution with the conversion of its parking lot into a dynamic space for art exhibitions, movie premieres, red carpet events, and concerts. “We’re excited to offer our space to the community, envisioning a hub for local events and celebrations,” says Farzam. Although the timeline for these enhancements is still under consideration, Farzam’s enthusiasm for collaboration with local event organizers and the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce is palpable, especially regarding the upcoming ribboncutting ceremony to officially unveil the hotel’s new event space and renovations. Tour The Hills With Malibu Discovery
Enjoy a day of indulgence tasting wines and discover wine country — tucked away in LA’s backyard region of the Santa Monica Mountains in historic Malibu.
Taking you there is Malibu Discovery, an elevated tour experience that showcases the uniqueness and scenic beauty of LA’s most exciting venues and locations, founded by Ken Fasola and Mike Dwyer more than 10 years ago.
“Most people think about celebrities, beaches and surfing in Malibu and while that’s true, the most unique and beautiful scenery is found in wine country, historical Malibu, in the hills,” Fasola said.
Malibu Discovery offers a variety of signature and custom tours excursions and has earned the reputation as one of LA’s Best Tour Companies, hosting over 14,000 tours since its inception.
“Our mission was to create a signature tour that showcased and highlights all the great things about Malibu,” Fasola said. “But we’ve grown in the last 10 years, and showcase more of LA’s unique and beautiful history. For locals, it’s the perfect way to learn about the history of our own backyard.”
Malibu Discovery’s signature tour, the Malibu Wine Trail Tour, is a stunning journey along the Pacific Coast and into the canyons of Malibu Wine Country, which now boasts its own AVA, or American Viticultural Area, a specific type of appellation of origin on wine labels. This six-hour tour explores the variety of wines that Malibu has to offer at tasting rooms like Rosenthal, Cornell and Stonehaus.
For connoisseurs of wine who also love sightseeing and adventure, Malibu Discovery hosts a number of sightseeing tours, with a little less wine, more adventure, Fasola said.
The Premier Getty Wine Tour is an unforgettable day of world-class art, wine and delicious food visiting the world-famous Getty Villa Museum along the Pacific Coast in Malibu.
“From a cultural standpoint, the Getty Villa is absolutely stunning and world class — that tour has the broadest cultural aspects, Greek and Roman antiquities housed in a re-created Roman country home, it’s outstanding,” Fasola said.
The Malibu Movie & Celebrity Lifestyle Tour takes guests through mountain passes with ocean views to spot celebrity homes and visits a famous Hollywood western film set and other movie and television locations.
For early risers, Malibu Discovery offers a Sunrise Hiking Tour above the “City of Angels” on a three-mile hike at Will Rogers Historic State Park up to Inspiration Point. With so much to choose from, Malibu Discovery is your ticket to the hills and a

viewpoint of LA’s history unlike any other.
“Geographically, Malibu is one of the biggest cities in the country, 21 miles down the coast and 10 miles inland with only 13,000 residents. It’s kind of rural and spread out, so to know all the secrets and pockets of history that are found here, you need a guide. You can’t take an Uber and get the same experience,” Fasola said.
“All of our tours are journeys. Afterward, people have explored so many parameters
and aspects of Malibu and everything comes together because our tours and professional tour guides have set the bar high in this industry,” he added.
Malibu Discovery offers its tours for corporate events, both large and small, parties, special occasions, custom tours and romantic getaways, available year round.

Get Away With Luggage You Can Trust
By Susan PayneFor all your travel and exploration needs this summer, H. Savinar Luggage Co. is a dealer you can trust.
Serving Los Angeles with two brick and mortar locations, H. Savinar has been helping generations of family find brand name, quality luggage since its inception in 1916 — more than a century ago — and is one of the oldest luggage stores in the United States.
Whether you are looking for luggage with multi-terrain maneuverability or security and durability for peace of mind while traveling, your next destination should be an H. Savinar retail store in either Culver City or Canoga Park.
“Our warehouse is filled with one of the
largest selections of nationally advertised brands of luggage, briefcases, laptop cases and travel accessories at the guaranteed lowest prices,” said Joey Diamond, owner of H. Savinar.
Diamond has had a 39-year relationship with the company, starting out as a monogrammer, then moving into sales, and eventual ownership of the company in 2016, after the 2010 passing of Lewis Savinar, son of former owners Hyman and Harold.
“I quickly jumped into Lewis’s shoes to keep the business running. This was especially difficult because of how close we were. Lewis treated me like a son and he was widely respected in the industry. Not easy to fill those shoes,” Diamond said.
H. Savinar carries most major brands such as Briggs & Riley, Tumi, Victornox, Bric’s, Samsonsite, Travel Pro, Delsey, High Sierra, Ricardo, Roncato and Swiss Army, and is an authorized dealer for every line.
“We vigorously search for a better advertised price on our products, and
therefore, consistently have the lowest prices in the industry. Whatever your travel needs are, we have the right bag at the right price and we’re here to service it if anything goes wrong,” Diamond said.
Throughout H. Savinar’s 108 years of business, the company has forged excellent relations with a number of manufacturers and customers, giving you the best options for luggage that fit your need.
“We treat customers like family here. This is one of those stores that right when you walk in, you know you’re going to have a good experience. We don’t just try to sell you a piece of luggage. We find out your traveling habits and needs to find you the right bag. Once we find it, we’ll make sure you know all the features,” said Diamond.
Before a piece of luggage leaves H. Savinar’s warehouse, each item is inspected for quality. The company is also an authorized repair center for most manufacturers.
“We’ve seen a lot of changes in the 108 years we’ve been in business, but one thing that hasn’t changed is our dedication to our

loyal customers,” Diamond said. MONGRAMMING AND CORPORATE SALES
In addition to a numerous selection of luggage, H. Savinar offers personalized monogramming and embroidery services — initials, names or company logos. For luggage, this is essential in differentiating your personal belongings from another while traveling.
For companies looking to treat their employees, H. Savinar offers company logo monogramming or embroidery and individual labeling and shipping direct to your customers.
H. Savinar Luggage can be found in Culver City at 10730 Washington Boulevard (323-938-2501), open Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Canoga Park at 6931 Topanga Cyn Boulevard (818-7031313), open Monday through Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Perhaps you visited as a child or a teenager. Maybe these days you enjoy it with your kids. Or maybe you’ve only seen the fun from a distance. Either way, you’re probably familiar

with the iconic presence of Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier: the enormous silhouette of the Ferris wheel; the roller coaster emitting screams of delight; and the colorful swoop of the Sea Dragon ride.
Looking directly out on the Pacific Ocean, Pacific Park is an amusement park like no other. Millions of visitors enjoy it each year, and it’s not hard to see why, with a dozen rides, popular Midway arcade games and delicious over-ocean dining—including those classic funnel cakes of course!
And then there’s the weather. Those who live in Santa Monica know we enjoy an average of 280 days of sunshine a year, making this one of the sunniest amusement parks, as well as the only West Coast amusement park directly located on a pier. It’s also the only Los Angeles’ amusement park that you can enter totally free of charge.
Pacific Park’s purpose is to provide an authentic California amusement experience,

where guests of all ages play together in a safe and unrivaled setting. And, over the years, the park has been continually upgraded and improved upon so that the fun never stops.
“We are always looking at new and exciting ways to improve the visitor experience,” says Nathan Smithson, Director of Marketing and Business Development at Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier. “This means new rides including Shark Frenzy and the Seaside Swing, games such as Whac-A-Mole, and exciting new food offerings while staying true to guests’

favorites like burgers, hotdogs, and Scoops Icecream & Treats.”
The Park opened in 1996, and having a tight maintenance schedule is important to make sure everything stays in tip-top shape. This includes recently refurbishing the famous ‘Inkie’ octopus that sits above the entranceway welcoming visitors.
Among its many other attractions, the Park is perhaps most famous for its Pacific Wheel— the world’s first and only solar-powered Ferris wheel. Measuring 85 feet, the wheel moves at 2.5 revolutions per minute with intermittent

stops to pick up passengers.
Not only does the wheel provide incredible views of the Southern California coastline and Los Angeles skyline from more than 130 feet above the Pier, but it’s also lit up in the evenings by more than 174,000 energy-efficient LED lights. These lights provide spectacular computer-generated visual entertainment and special programming to commemorate holidays and special events.
Pacific Park also boasts the only West Coast steel roller coaster located on a Pier over the Pacific Coastline. Riders are treated to
refreshing ocean sprays as they rise to 55 feet in the air, enjoying spectacular views before a thrilling drop and 35 mph ride that circles the park. Another ride, Inkie’s Scrambler, is a 12car fast-paced ride that performs a series of roundabout moves and rotations at more than 11 revolutions per minute. And Pacific Plunge is a 44-foot exhilarating tower ride that leaves riders feeling weightless while providing a breathtaking view of the Pacific.
Pacific Park is so iconic it has appeared in over 500 movies and television shows, including Fat Albert, Hannah Montana, Kidsongs, 90210,

U2’s The Edge and Morleigh Steinberg
Honored
With Inaugural HEART Award at Star-Studded Gala
The Gala Raised $2.7 Million for the Services of Venice Family Clinic, the Nonprofit Health Center Which Serves Over 45,000
By Zach ArmstrongNonprofit health center Venice Family Clinic awarded artist Morleigh Steinberg and U2’s The Edge for their longtime support with the inaugural HEART (Health + Art) Award. The honor was made during the first-ever HEART Gala at Culver City’s 3Labs; an event which united a throng of celebrities such as Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, TV producer Chuck Lorre and “The Karate Kid” actress Elisabeth Shue.
Fresh off performing at the White House Correspondents’ dinner, comedian Matt Friend hosted the Gala. Grammy-winning rockstar Beck revved up the crowd with hits such as “Loser” and “Where It’s At” before Levi Evans (the son of The Edge and Steinberg) closed the evening out with a live musical performance as a tribute to his parents. On one side of the gala, an auction for enticing luxuries including a private Venice lunch with The Edge and Morleigh, vinyl records from iconic music artists and a Hawaiin vacation was also held; helping raise $2.7 million for the clinic’s services.
“This means so much to us not only as artists but as human beings who believe in the power of community and the importance of access to healthcare for all.” said The Edge during his acceptance speech. “Venice Family Clinic holds a special place in our hearts.” The award, designed by artist Sachi Moskowitz, was presented to the Rock n Roll icon by friend and activist Bobby Shriver.
Founded in 1970, the Venice Family Clinic provides comprehensive health care to over 45,000 people each year throughout L.A. County from the Santa Monica Mountains through the South Bay. Patients are served regardless of income, insurance or immigration status. Its network includes clinic locations and Early Head Start centers in Venice, Santa Monica, Mar Vista, Inglewood, Culver City, Redondo Beach, Carson, Gardena and Hawthorne, in addition to mobile clinics and a street medicine program.

The Gala was held amid the 45th Annual Venice Family Clinic Art Walk + Auction which will take place through May 19 in Venice. The free and open to the public event will take place at 910 Abbot Kinney and will feature work from nearly 200 artists, including this year’s Signature Artist, legendary sculptor Fred Eversley.
In the late 70s, when the clinic couldn’t pay its rent and was on the verge of closing, members of the Venice arts community such as Frank Gehry, Lita Albuquerque and Laddie John Dill came together to keep the nonprofit active. And thus, the art walk was born.
Oscar-winning actress Anjelica Huston, speaking on stage about how the Art Walk brought the clinic back to life, stated “My husband, Robert (Graham), and I joined
