In 2020, a Metro employee Jennifer Loew filed a labor lawsuit against Metro alleging retaliation after she claimed misconduct over the way that the Peace Over Violence contract was awarded. Court records show a settlement was reached. As reported by the LA Times, the agreement was for more than $500,000. The settlement has not yet been made final, as reported by Deadline.

In a press release, the SMFD said that the crash involved a single-engine Piper Sport airplane. The aircraft, which was operated by a local flight school, crashed and then caught fire, according to the SMFD.

“This year’s cleanup is more than an opportunity to keep our waterways and communities clean, it’s an invitation to build solidarity with our waterways, and with each other” says Tracy Quinn, CEO of Heal the Bay, “Many coastal Indigenous Peoples and Native Nations, including the Tongva, Chumash, Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians, and Kizh Nation tribes, as well as BIPOC residents, cherish histories and cultural understandings that celebrate the pure essence of water, and teach us how to live in harmony with it. This is a day to celebrate and give honor to a way of living in deep connection to water.”

Local environmental nonprofit Heal the Bay is calling on Los Angeles County volunteers to join the world’s largest cleanup event –Coastal Cleanup Day – to be held on Saturday, September 17 from 9 am to 12 pm at more than 35 coastal, inland, L.A. River, and underwater sites. In addition to cleanups, participants are invited to enjoy a number of related activities including a special live performance by Sacred Places Institute for Indigenous Peoples from 11:30 am - 12 pm at the Santa Monica Pier, a late-night talk show-style run down of current environmental advocacy topics called Trash Talk LIVE, broadcasted live from 1:001:30 pm at the Heal the Bay Aquarium, and Education Day (Sept 14), an opportunity for L.A. County students to participate in the fun. Recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the “largest garbage collection”
event ever, Coastal Cleanup Day mobilizes thousands of Angelenos to pick up harmful and unsightly trash and debris while exploring the environment, enjoying the outdoors, and participating in community science.
Inland sites include Avalon Gardens, Hoover Street Elementary School, and Inell Woods Park, where Heal the Bay is building a stormwater park

Over the last 20 years, Heal the Bay volunteers have removed more than 4 million pieces of trash and debris from L.A. County beaches. The nonprofit urges local and statewide action to address this pollution crisis, striving to reduce waste at the source, before it impacts communities and gets to our beaches. While beach cleanups are helping to eradicate what’s on shore, there are still 8 million tons of plastic making their way into our oceans every year, harming people, communities, and ecosystems along the way. That’s equivalent to one garbage truck-full every single minute.
The data gathered during Coastal Cleanup Month is used to educate and inform policymakers, product manufacturers, sanitation and waste managers, and communities about the top types of pollution found in the environment. While cigarette butts, plastic food wrappers, plastic beverage bottles, and plastic caps always top the list of most common items found by cleanup volunteers, PPE masks and gloves have made the list the past two years.

scene where Nate and Gigi are shopping in a market where she gets to pick out the cereal. It’s a very happy moment. But alas, a dark cloud appears as animal activist Chloe (Welker White) informs Nate that animals are not allowed in grocery stores or any place where there is food. Despite mom’s argument that the monkey is a service animal, they are forced to leave the market. But this is not the end as in a quest to have some fun, our wheelchair-bound boy decides to go to a party to which he is invited by Lori who he met again in the produce section of the market. He does go. He drinks a lot and for the first time since the accident, is actually having fun. His sister Katy shows up and admonishes him to which he replies: “I just wanted to go to a party.” Photos of he and his monkey go viral leading to huge protests by animal rights activists in front of the family home followed by a lawsuit and a potential ruling on the subject. There is a touching scene where Nate gives a heartfelt statement to a panel who will be making that important ruling. The subject of this film could have been maudlin but instead Hamm, working with a well-written script, elicited excellent

Gigi and although the storyline becomes predictable, the extraordinary relationship that eventually develops between Nate and this service animal, will have you cheering. Gigi is set up with comfortable living quarters in Nate’s room, but for a long time, does not get off her perch. Apparently, she had been abused and is fearful so it takes a bit of time for her to become friendly. Nate is determined to win her over and entices her with peanut butter on his finger. Being quite smart, our little monkey takes the whole jar and retreats back to her open cage. In the meantime, Gigi watches as Nate receives painful physical therapy. The other member of the household is Banjo, the family dog, who is not thrilled with the new occupant so at the first opportunity he chases her around the house resulting in total chaos. Dad comes home to this mess and an argument ensues between he and his wife with him suggesting the monkey be returned to the facility. That doesn’t happen and in short order Gigi begins to assist in Nate’s physical therapy exercises, pushing a ball into his hand. With a renewed spirit, and help from his monkey, our boy makes excellent, but surprising progress in the use of his hands. There is one delightful
“Gigi & Nate” – A Tender Family Dramedy
Nick Hamm’s “Gigi & Nate,” is loosely based on the book by Ellen Rogers, which chronicled the physical and mental struggles of her son Edward “Ned” Sullivan. Adapted for the screen by David Hudgins, this is a compelling film about a young man whose life is completely turned around in what amounts to a nanosecond.

With some establishing shots, the film really begins on July 4th with Nate Gibson, superbly characterized by Charlie Rowe, whose performance borders on a tour-deforce. He is a happy young man planning to go off to college. His family has a summer house in North Carolina but before he heads off to the lake, he meets Lori, (Zoe Colletti) who works in a store, and invites her to join him for a fun day of swimming and picnicking. Being a local, she tells him she doesn’t go out with “summer people” but finds him charming and accepts the invitation. At the lake, he dives off of a steep cliff sinking deep into the water but as he surfaces, there is something wrong. His hearing becomes muted and he’s having trouble moving his limbs. Claire, his mom, nicely done by the reliable Marcia Gay Harden, is a fine artist but has not painted in a long time. At dinner, Nate tells her he has a bad headache and in short order throws up, blacks out, and is rushed to a local hospital in the fictional town of Happy Days. The doctor gives her bad news. There is swelling in the brain and the prognosis is dire. Claire arranges for her son to be airlifted to a facility in Nashville which she believes is better equipped to handle what has been diagnosed as bacterial meningitis stemming from his dive into the lake water. Her son is now a quadriplegic and at this point, surrounded by his family, is in a coma. His devoted older sister Katy (Josephine Langford) speaks to him: “Don’t leave Nathanial – You do not have my permission to leave.” Eventually, Nate is home living in a separate, airy, cheerful room equipped with a special bed and requisite equipment. He is morbidly depressed and at one point tries to drown himself in their brook. Mom decides that he needs a service animal which might cheer him up so the entire family, including Nate’s younger sister Annabelle (Hannah Riley,) grandma, Mama Gibson, played by Diane Ladd, and dad, acted by Jim Belushi, who gives the only lackluster performance, all head to “Helping Hands” where monkeys are trained to be service animals. Nate looks in all the cages with his eyes settling on capuchin monkey named

so much potential to be a really profound experience, and that doesn’t happen in the end. Even the location, Detroit (with Bulgaria being a part time stand-in for some shots) could have taken on extra meaning through its pre-Civil War history, but that detail is never given screen time. Barbarian is worth seeing for the excellent work that’s gone into it. My advice is, just don’t mind the last few minutes.
Bill Sarsgaard, middle son of the great acting family headed by his father Stellen, creates a very complex but also relatable “Keith,” whose hesitancy seems either born from kindness or personality disorder, we’re not sure which. This role will break our tendency to think of him only as the “Pennywise,” the scary clown from the 2017 movie It. Justin Long nails “AJ,” the self-obsessed actor running from the crosshairs of the MeToo movement.

This is a very smart movie…until the end, that is, where it kind of disintegrates into a montage of pop culture elements. I kind of understand the decision by writer/director Zach Cregger to go more mainstream with last few minutes of the film, since this is the first major feature for this prolific actor/ improv comedian/ writer / director/ producer/ twitch streamer. And it worked for him, as the movie took in 10 million in its opening weekend. However I was ready to see it get deeper into the psychology, flaws and courage of the players, and to pose some heady questions.

No doubt the developer’s team will attempt to re-design or otherwise respond to the issues. It doesn’t seem likely that there won’t be a continuing effort to cram as much square footage as they can onto the site, even if it means they may be confronted with some challenging design issues in bringing the design into compliance. The complete absence of two-bedroom units makes this a particularly unfriendly project for families, further weakening the School District, while the injection of almost 800 cars in this accidentprone intersection will only aggravate the gridlock of Lincoln Blvd.

(Note that the site was graded flat more than 70 years ago and has up to 32ft high retaining walls along the rear and side lot lines. The SANG (Segmented Average NATURAL Grade) referenced above is a method of measuring height on an EXISTING slope, yet the design submitted is currently measuring the 65 ft bonus height from points as high as 32 feet in the air which, when combined with elevator, stair, and mechanical increases of up to 18ft, the buildings in fact becomes 65ft + 18FT + 32 FT = 115 FT. The MUBL zone height is 36ft. Clearly the intent of the code was not to be applied to a flat site, which is why it says NATURAL grade. The code also says height is measured “from EXISTING grade per the survey submitted with the application”, which clearly indicates a flat site. It is an ‘interpreted’ anomaly that the SANG is being utilized, and it is not a good example of a city interpreting a conflict in the best interest of its residents and the environment.)
(Note that residents from the three neighborhoods directly adjacent to the Gelson’s site worked together for a number of years, and ultimately succeeded in the City hiring outside consultants to confirm the residents’ design and analysis efforts for improving Lincoln Blvd. The consultants were then retained by the City and prepared the Lincoln Blvd. master plan, the ‘LiNC’, approved by the City Council. The Gelson’s project, as pointed out by DOT in its comments, has apparently ignored that plan.)

That said, there is another issue that does not appear to have been identified by the City as being non-compliant though the City was notified by a concerned group of the probability of a serious miscalculation of the actual allowable square footage of the current design, and the assumptions upon which the calculations were made. The City responses do not address the calculations question raised, and hopefully we will soon hear whether or not there is merit to what we believe is a credible challenge for bringing the project into compliance.BobTaylor, AIA for SMa.r.t.

Additional non-compliant issues are: 11.) The plan to be implemented by the City addressing the high number of collisions caused by the existing driveways restricts left turns on Lincoln Blvd access driveways. Additionally, the City’s Lincoln Boulevard street scape plan named “LiNC” proposes dividing medians in this general location, which will need to be coordinated with any possible access points on Lincoln Boulevard.”

A 10-year review of collisions occurring at or near the intersection of Lincoln Blvd and Ocean Park Blvd found that forty-two percent occurred at the Lincoln Blvd driveways serving the Gelson’s site, highlighting them as a safety concern and candidates for removal. Santa Monica Municipal Code requires that new developments take vehicular access from the alley or a side street. The application has access from Lincoln Boulevard, which is not consistent with Section 9.28.120(B)(3). Therefore, if the development desires to maintain any form of vehicular access via Lincoln Blvd, the applicant must obtain the Director’s approval per condition “c” of SMMC 9.28.120.B.3:
