By TimoThy michael In honor of Pride Month SaMo Pride has announced it’s art walk throughout June which will feature family friendly programming.

The Santa Monica Pier, Downtown Santa Monica, and Santa Monica Place, in collaboration with the City of Santa Monica and Santa Monica Travel and Tourism are excited to announce the return of SaMo PRIDE

this June. A celebration of love in every color, SaMo PRIDE will host “Miles of Pride,” a rainbow-lit art walk featuring creations by LGBTQIA+ visual artists in addition to safe, family-friendly programming throughout the month.

The visually striking rainbow-lit pathway will span miles of city streets through Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica Place and the Santa Monica Pier, bringing together the westside community and visitors from around the world. The art walk is presented in partnership with Allies in Arts, a local nonprofit whose mission is to support woman, BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ artists who are often underrepresented in creative industries.

“Spanning Third Street Promenade, through

Santa Monica Place, and leading through the Santa Monica Pier, strollers can appreciate incredible one-of-a-kind art installations by LGBTQIA+ artists. This rainbow-lit pathway, dubbed “Miles of PRIDE,” will serve as an anchor for SaMo PRIDE month, to be joined by local business specials, virtual events, and so much more throughout the city,” the organization said. “Santa Monica Pier, Downtown Santa Monica, and Santa Monica Place, in collaboration with the City of Santa Monica and Santa Monica Travel and Tourism welcome you this June for a month-long artwalk that safely celebrates our city’s inclusive and diverse spirit, with a focus on familyfriendly displays and activities that can be enjoyed at your leisure.”

For the first time in its history, SaMo PRIDE is releasing an open call for visual artists to participate in this unique project. Inspiring and innovative Southern California artists and artist teams are encouraged to submit proposals for consideration. Allies in Arts will curate the installation and select all final artist participants. The deadline to submit was April 19, 2021. Selected artists will be notified in early May with the exhibition premiering June 1 and running through June 30, 2021.

BIKTARVY may cause serious side effects, including:  Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. Your healthcare provider will test you for HBV. If you have both HIV-1 and HBV, your HBV may suddenly get worse if you stop taking BIKTARVY. Do not stop taking BIKTARVY without first talking to your healthcare provider, as they will need to check your health regularly for several months, and may give you HBV medicine.

BIKTARVY may cause serious side effects, including:  Those in the “Most Important Information About BIKTARVY” section.  Changes in your immune system. Your immune system may get stronger and begin to fight infections that may have been hidden in your body. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any new symptoms after you start taking BIKTARVY.  Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare provider should do blood and urine tests to check your kidneys. If you develop new or worse kidney problems, they may tell you to stop taking BIKTARVY.  Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious but rare medical emergency that can lead to death.

Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, cold or blue hands and feet, feel dizzy or lightheaded, or a fast or abnormal heartbeat.  Severe liver problems, which in rare cases can lead to death.

Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, or stomach-area pain.  The most common side effects of BIKTARVY in clinical studies were diarrhea (6%), nausea (6%), and headache (5%).

These are not all the possible side effects of BIKTARVY. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any new symptoms while taking BIKTARVY. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.FDA.gov/medwatch or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

Your healthcare provider will need to do tests to monitor your health before and during treatment with BIKTARVY.

ABOUT BIKTARVY BIKTARVY is a complete, 1-pill, once-a-day prescription medicine used to treat HIV-1 in adults and children who weigh at least 55 pounds. It can either be used in people who have never taken HIV-1 medicines before, or people who are replacing their current HIV-1 medicines and whose healthcare provider determines they meet certain requirements.

BIKTARVY does not cure HIV-1 or AIDS. HIV-1 is the virus that causes AIDS. Do NOT take BIKTARVY if you also take a medicine that contains:  dofetilide  rifampin  any other medicines to treat HIV-1

Dogdrop A Queer Owned Local Doggy Daycare

Company launches amid pandemic

By Timothy Michael Dogdrop a local queer owned doggy daycare prioritizes pet wellness.

Shaina and Greer are two queer women who founded Dogdrop in Los Angeles after seeing other successful pet care companies born and grown in L.A. Dogdrop launched just two months before the pandemic and has been able to ride the wave of a surge in dogs that were adopted. As Los Angeles is starting to reopen, With life returning to a sense of normalcy and people going back to work, Dogdrop wants to make that transition for pets and owners a little easier. Dog parents can drop off their pup at Dogdrop while they go out for dinner and drinks so that their dog can work on separation anxiety that’s been induced from the quarantine.

“We are seeing an uptick of dogs with severe

separation anxiety aka quarantine pups,” said Shaina, one of Dogdrop’s founders. “They are not prepared for their parents to start leaving the house, and Dogdrop provides a flexible and high-quality place for their dog to hang and work on separation anxiety. We are open M-F from 8-8, so whether dogs need all day care or just a place to get in their recreation and activity, we’re that spot.”

As female queer founders, they have surpassed the odds and have been backed by leaders in the pet care space such as Mars PetCare and the CEO of Wag! They are proud to have support of the LGBTQ+ community in Los Angeles.

When asked what inspired them to open Dogdrop Shaina stated, “We couldn’t find dog care that worked for us. Nothing was flexible enough, clean enough, engaging enough, or cool enough, so we decided to build our own version, by reimagining dog care from the ground up.”

71-year-old Jenner to run against potential Newsom recall election

By Timothy Michael Caitlyn Jenner, Olympic gold medalist and transgender activist, announced that she will be running for California Governor.

71-year-old Jenner made the announcement saying she had filed paperwork to run for the office.

Current Democratic Governor, Gavin Newsom, may face a recall election this year which would be California’s second-ever recall election, opening up the opportunity for Jenner and any other candidate willing to run. However officials are still reviewing the petition signatures needed to trigger such a vote.

Newsom’s popularity took a hit after he introduced stay-at-home orders during the pandemic that forced schools and thousands of businesses to close. He was also heavily criticized for dining out with friends and lobbyists at an exclusive San Francisco Bay Area restaurant at a time when residents were subject to a partial lockdown.

Still, recent polling suggests the 53-year-old would hold his seat if a vote takes place.

Jenner took to Twitter criticizing Newsom saying, “Californians want better and need better from their politicians.”

“Taking on entrenched Sacramento politicians and the special interests that fund

them requires a fighter who isn’t afraid to do what is right. I am a proven winner and the only outsider who can put an end to Gavin Newsom’s disastrous time as governor.”

Jenner will be running as a Republican which is no surprise after backing former President Donald Trump in his 2016 election campaign. However she later criticized his administration’s reversal of a directive on transgender access to public school bathrooms.

She also criticized Trump for saying that transgender people would not be allowed to serve in the US military.

Jenner is the most high-profile nonpolitician to vie for the post since Arnold Schwarzenegger launched his successful Republican bid in 2003.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony For “OUT on Robertson” May 1st ribbon cutting in WeHO

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Saturday May 1st to commemorate the newest OUT on Robertson program in West Hollywood.

In August 2020, the City of West Hollywood began its OUT Zones program, by offering streamlined approval for businesses to use sidewalks, on-street parking spaces, and private parking lots as areas to expand operations.

The program now expands with OUT on Robertson, a pilot program that closes N. Robertson Boulevard south of Santa Monica Boulevard and north of Melrose Avenue to vehicular traffic each Saturday and Sunday in order to transform the restaurant/retail area into a pedestrian zone with COVID-19 safety protocols as the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announces reopening guidelines allowing for higher numbers of patrons.

OUT on Robertson will embrace, on weekends, what compact OUT Zones throughout the City have been offering for months: a place to enjoy sunny days and balmy nights while maintaining social distance, aligning with health and safety protocols, and supporting community businesses.

OUT on Robertson will give people who live, work, and play in West Hollywood more opportunities to stay outside under palm trees by day and starry skies at night, all while enjoying the best of what West Hollywood has to offer. People exploring West Hollywood’s OUT on Robertson are reminded that the City of West Hollywood has a mandatory facecovering requirement and people are urged to be mindful of maintaining six feet of social distance for dining, shopping, and personal care under the sun and stars.

OUT Zones are marked by colorful signage with spots to “Dine OUT” for restaurants and cafes, “Shop OUT” for boutiques and goods, and “Werk OUT” for exercise and personal care.

Plentiful parking is available in the fivestory West Hollywood Park structure located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard, adjacent to the West Hollywood Library. Additional parking is also available at 650 N. La Peer Drive. For those using rideshare services, the City has established Drop Zones at the corner of Melrose Avenue and N. Robertson Boulevard.

Each weekend there will be a presence of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputies,

West Hollywood Code Officers and West Hollywood Parking Enforcement Staff to monitor activity. Additionally, signage will be located throughout areas of the closure notifying members of the community of rules pursuant to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health protocols. How will this closure impact traffic on surrounding streets?

The closure will have some impact to surrounding streets as drivers adjust to the closures, over time staff anticipates these impacts to be minimal. During the duration of the pilot program, West Hollywood Parking Enforcement Staff will be onsite to mitigate traffic issues. Additionally, signage will be placed surrounding the closure informing drivers of public parking locations and rideshare pick-off and drop off locations.

“Closing this highly trafficked and bustling stretch of Robertson will provide a pedestriansafe space that allows for appropriate social distancing as the Public Health Department eases capacity restrictions while still monitoring the spread of the virus,” said City of West Hollywood Council-member John M. Erickson. “COVID is not over and we all must remain vigilant about protecting our own health, and the health of others. I’m looking forward to safely seeing you — at a distance and with your most fabulous masks on — OUT on Robertson!”

“The coronavirus pandemic has forced many of our local businesses to drastically

alter how they serve the public. This has had a profound impact on the City of West Hollywood’s business community and has added to the economic challenges wrought

by COVID-19,” said Councilmember John D’Amico. “Keeping our community safe, healthy, and thriving is priority one. Creating safe, socially distanced outdoor spaces for expanded operations is a creative approach that will help West Hollywood’s businesses, residents, and visitors as we continue to respond to the evolving pandemic.”

This expansion of the OUT Zones program provides outdoor commercial space in public right-of-way for restaurants and retail establishments to move operations outside to ensure social (physical) distancing and meet protocols set forth by the Los Angeles County

Department of Public Health and the State of California, which currently limit indoor operations in these sectors.

Byron Lane Helping Young Men Understand Testicular Cancer With “Nuts & Bolts”

Hollywood author playwright, screenwriter and testicular cancer survivor educationing young men

Hollywood author playwright, screenwriter and testicular cancer survivor Byron Lane wants to educate young men about testicular cancer.

Testicular cancer is the number one cancer among young men however 62% of those who are most at risk do not know how to check themselves. Lane wants to change that.

In 2015 while giving himself an “unofficial self-exam” Lane felt a lump and knew from Movember, the Testicular Cancer Society and other awareness campaigns that he should reach out to his doctor who then made the unfortunate diagnosis.

Lane’s self-exam caught the cancer early enough and was treated accordingly by his doctor. If the cancer had not been caught early

the risk of it spreading and causing other severe health problems would have increased.

Unfortunately that was not the end of Lane’s cancer battle, years later a routine scan showed his cancer had come back in his lymph nodes which required chemo and surgery.

“It was a tough road but there were many beautiful moments.” Land recalled. “There was the older lady getting chemo at the same time as me who was always knitting—and it turned out she was knitting me a cap. I posted about my experience on social media and I made friends

all over the country who were going through the same things. And being honest about feeling vulnerable, scared, and even annoyed by the diagnosis, helped strengthen my relationships with my boyfriend and family.”

After his cancer battle Lane is now one of Movember’s celebrity ambassadors. He chronicled his testicular cancer journey in the web series Last Will & Testicle (which he also wrote and acted as co-star). He’s also been very vocal about his journey on social media to help and inspire others who may be in the same

situation.

Last month, Movember launched Nuts & Bolts, an online tool to help young men develop a better understanding of testicular cancer – and a resource for those who have experienced it – and provide them with the information and tools to live happier, healthier, and longer lives.

Lane says, “The best thing you can do for your testicles is give them a bit of a feel each month or so, and if something doesn’t seem right, head to the doctor.”

WeHo Stands Up Against Sexual Violence On ‘Denim Day’ April 28 event raises awareness

By Staff Writer The City of West Hollywood encouraged everyone to wear jeans on Denim Day, Wednesday, April 28, 2021, which is an internationally recognized day to raise awareness about rape and sexual assault.

Each April, the City of West Hollywood joins communities around the world to recognize National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. Denim Day was founded by the nonprofit organization Peace Over Violence following a 1999 court ruling in Italy in which a rape conviction case was overturned with the argument that, because the victim had been wearing tight jeans at the time of the assault, she must have been expressing consent.

The City’s Denim Day recognition is organized each year by the City’s Public Safety Department in the spirit of uniting against sexual assault, to break the silence about sexual violence, and to stand up in support of survivors. City staff members and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department West Hollywood Division deputies are also expected to participate in wearing denim on

Denim Day. Additionally, in recognition of National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, West Hollywood City Hall and the lanterns above Santa Monica Boulevard between N. Robertson Boulevard and Hancock Avenue in the City of West Hollywood are glowing in the color teal through Friday, April 30, 2021. The City will also participate in the worldwide social media effort marking events taking place across the globe as it continues to promote its ongoing sexual assault awareness campaign, Only Yes Means Yes, to encourage people in the community to be more aware of sexual assault and to promote a message of consent.

Amplify the Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month message by using the hashtags #DenimDay, #OnlyYes and #Consent.

Kellogg’s is launching a limited edition LGBT-themed cereal in celebration of Pride.

The company teamed up with GLAAD to create the special cereal, “Together with Pride”, which is made of rainbow heartshaped pieces and edible glitter.

The boxes will hit shelves this May, just in time for Pride month, and for each one sold Kellogg’s will donate three dollars to GLAAD to support their efforts to accelerate LGBT+ rights.

The 7.8-ounce boxes have a suggested retail price of around $4, and shoppers must upload a copy of their receipt to Kellogg’s Family Rewards to support the donation.

The box features a variety of familiar Kellogg’s characters. Tony the Tiger, Snap, Crackle and Pop, Toucan Sam and the frosted

Mini Wheat will all make an appearance to “celebrate everyone having a seat at the breakfast table together,” Kellogg’s said.

It’s not the first time Kellogg’s has joined forces with GLAAD. The two have a longstanding partnership after they created another Pride-themed breakfast, called “All Together Cereal,” in 2019.

The grant was generously given by Health Net to broader its commitment to support communities during the national pandemic. The Los Angeles LGBT Center is one of 24 organizations statewide that received funding totaling $1.95 million dedicated to keeping the safety net strong for those most at-risk.

“The Los Angeles LGBT Center is the nation’s largest and most experienced provider of LGBT health and mental health services, and we will continue to help those who need us the most, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Center CEO Lorri L. Jean. “Thanks to Health Net, we will be able to assist the uninsured and underinsured in accessing our quality health care so that they may lead healthier, happier lives.”

As one of California’s largest and most experienced managed care plans, Health Net is committed to ensuring underserved residents have access to quality care.

By increasing Medi-Cal enrollment, education and retention support, providers

and community organizations are able to better care for those most impacted by the pandemic.

“The ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have underscored the importance of improving the health and well-being for the LGBTQ+ community, who continue to face widespread disparities,” said Amanda McAllister-Wallner, Director of the LGBTQ Health and Human Services Network. “With this grant, the LA LGBT Center will have additional resources to help ensure that the LGBTQ+ community in Los Angeles County has access to affordable, quality health care through Medi-Cal—taking us another step forward in closing this gap.”

“Data shows that a large number of Californians that are eligible for Medi-Cal aren’t applying for benefits. You wouldn’t expect that in the midst of a pandemic,” said Brian Ternan, President and CEO of Health Net of California and California Health & Wellness. “Our community partners will use these grants to find and enroll newlyeligible people. With Medi-Cal coverage, California’s most vulnerable populations can receive the quality health care they deserve.”

This series of grants is part of Health Net’s Community & Infrastructure Investment Program, which has dedicated more than $65 million to bridge the divide in access, equity and quality of care across California.

The Center also received a $100,000 grant at the onset of the COVID -19 pandemic, which enabled them to expand their telehealth capacity, ensure safe continuity of care and meet patient needs.

In the spirit of National Volunteer Month held in the month of April the LGBTQ Center Long Beach is seeking volunteers to help organize the return of its Black and White Ball this New Years Eve. In 2019 the Black and White Ball, The Center’s biggest fundraising event, raised $375,000. The 8th annual gala returns following last year’s cancelation due to the Covid pandemic.

The Center is looking for individuals 18 years or older with prior involvement in or frequent attendance at other premiere social events in the Los Angeles area.

Strong networking and organizational skills with specific attention to detail are highly preferred.

Cultural competence in working with diverse populations, including communities of color, gender, sexuality, immigrants and persons of various ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, health status, and abilities is required. Event volunteers work under the direction of various members of the event committee, staff or other volunteers, who provide task-specific training. Event day volunteers will typically be asked to commit at least 3 hours. Participation on an event planning committee typically requires larger time commitments over several months.

Volunteers provide logistical and administrative assistance for planning events, provide on-site event support ranging from event set up, production and take down, and help ensure that The

Center’s brand is appropriately represented.

“As our community becomes more protected from Covid, old friends and new will want to meet and celebrate together once again,” commented Carlos Torres, the newly appointed executive director of the LGBTQ Center Long Beach. “However, we will need the help of the community to make this a spectacular night.”

The LGBTQ Center Long Beach supports more than 25,000 people a year through programs including youth services, senior services, counseling, legal services, domestic violence support, trans health programs, HIV and STI testing, and more than 20 weekly support groups. Currently many of these services are offered online during the pandemic. Drive up and walkup HIV/STI testing is now available by appointment Monday through Friday in a private area of the parking lot behind The Center at 2017 E. 4th Street in Long Beach.

Ellen DeGeneres Under Fire For Admitting To Driving Under The Influence DeGeneres describes driving high

While appearing on a cannabis-themed episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live to celebrate the “high holiday” on April 20th the lesbian

talk show host told Kimmel about her experience with “weed drinks”.

DeGeneres said: “Chelsea Handler told me about these weed drinks, they’re called Cann, and they have CBD or THC — I don’t know what the good thing is.”

THC is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis, which makes people high.

Cann’s range of drinks contain between two and five milligrams of THC. She states that after drinking three of these and taking two sleeping pills she found her

The onePULSE Foundation is a not-for-profit organization created following the mass shooting tragedy at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida on June 12, 2016. The foundation was established to honor and preserve the legacy of those killed and to create a sanctuary of hope.

The film screenings called Conversation Starters, is part of a broader Conversation Series, sponsored

by JPMorgan Chase, Lockheed Martin and Skanska.

“We are thrilled to partner with director Julianna Brudek to showcase her important work and to have courageous conversations with the panelists following the short film screening,” said Dr. Earl Mowatt, vice president of education at onePULSE Foundation.
