Venice Pride Flag Lifeguard Tower Gets Facelift

Fresh coat of paint ahead of Pride Month

The Venice Pride Flag Lifeguard tower gets a fresh coat of paint and a bit of a facelift just in time for Pride Month.

The tower, located North of the skate park at the end of Brooks Ave was built and then unveiled on June 1st, 2017 by Venice Pride, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the needs of the LGBTQ+ community and painted by Venice Pride

board members.

The special event to kick off Pride Month in Venice was hosted by Los Angeles City Councilmember Mike Bonin, Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl and Venice Pride Board President Grant Turck where they unveiled the “Venice Pride Flag Lifeguard Tower” as well as a dedication of the “Bill Rosendahl Memorial Beach” which was named in honor of the first openly gay man to be elected to the Los Angeles City Council.

Over the years the once bright and vibrant lifeguard tower began to fade due to weather and lack of upkeep.

and his crew from Beaches and Harbors Los Angeles County the tower has been restored to its original glory just in time for this years Pride Month in June.

This comes just over a week after the Long Beach Lifeguard tower, painted the colors of the rainbow flag, burned to the ground.

The tower, on the beach bike path between 12th and 13th Places, was already “fully engulfed” in flames by the time firefighters arrived shortly around midnight on March 23rd.

That fire is still under investigation but many, including Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia, have speculated an act of hate.

In a statement Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia, who also identifies as gay, stated “The tower served as a symbol of our strong support for the diversity within our

ranks and the LGBTQ community who call Long Beach home.” He added, “To whoever committed this act, just please know that, one, you are not welcome in our community,” he said. “And two, that we will rebuild the lifeguard station, brighter, gayer, and bigger than it was before.”

Plans are already in the works to get a new rainbow-colored lifeguard tower built.

It will be built by Industrial Design Research, Inc. and is expected to be delivered in about six weeks though it typically can take several months to produce one, according to a statement from the city.

According to a Facebook post Venice Pride has donated $500 to The LGBTQ Center Long Beach to support Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia and the Long Beach Fire Department to rebuild the new tower.

Tina Turner Documentary James Charles Admits Messaging 16 Year Old Boys Breaks Records

YouTube star under fire for allegations

YouTube star, makeup artist and Los Angeles resident James Charles issued an apology video entitled “Holding Myself Accountable” admitting to contacting 16-yearold boys.

After new allegations that he inappropriately messaged a young fan surfaced, 21 year old Charles admitted to two separate incidents where he became aware that the person he was exchanging messages with was 16-years-old.

One occurred last year and one more recently.

In the video Charles states: “Today’s video is going to be from the heart, and I’m going to focus on what happened, the conclusions that I’ve come to and most importantly holding myself accountable for my own actions.

“I owe a massive apology to anybody that I’ve hurt or anybody that I’ve made uncomfortable with my actions. And I also want to say I’m sorry to my friends, family and fans that have to watch another one of these videos because you shouldn’t have to and this is really, really embarrassing.”

“These conversations should have never happened,” he added, admitting that he could have searched for the people he was talking to on other social media platforms and found their real ages.

Singer, song writer and gay icon Tina Turner released a documentary on HBO Max as a farewell to her fans which drew in more viewers than any documentary released on the platform.

The debut of “Tina” drew more than 1.1 million total viewers across all HBO platforms on Saturday night, making it the biggest premiere for an HBO documentary since 2019’s “Leaving Neverland.” The Bee Gees documentary, “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” bowed to about 1 million total viewers across various HBO platforms.

“Tina” is an intimate look at the life and career of musical icon Tina Turner, charting her unlikely rise to early fame, the personal and professional struggles throughout her life, and her even more improbable resurgence as a global star in the 1980s.

The documentary hails from Dan Lindsay, T.J. Martin, Simon Chinn, Jonathan Chinn and Diane Becker.

Her inspirational story of overcoming domestic abuse and rebuilding her life and career afterwards has inspired countless gay fans throughout the years making her an iconic figure in the gay community. Turner also has the distinction of performing at the opening ceremonies of the first ever Gay Games in San Francisco in 1982.

Her infamous song catalogue and style has

been imitated by drag queens for decades on platforms all across the world.

Turner lives with her second husband Erwin Bach whom she married in 2013 after 27 years together in a civil ceremony on the banks of Lake Zurich in Küsnacht, Switzerland where they currently reside.

26 of of the region’s best-known theater companies have exited the L.A. Stage Alliance

By TimoThy michael The Los Angeles Stage Alliance (LASA) announced that it would “cease all operations” following the departure of more than 25 of the group’s 150 participating theater companies.

That mass departure followed accusations that LASA showed disrespect to Asian American actress Jully Lee and theater companies representing diverse artists including East West Players and Deaf West Theatre.

Concerns about LASA’s record have come up for several years in regards to the organization’s treatment of theater professionals of color.

26 of of the region’s best-known theater companies have exited the L.A. Stage Alliance after an incident involving East West Players and actress Jully Lee at the Ovation Awards.

Lee, star of Hannah and the Dread Gazebo, was nominated for her role–but her name was mispronounced by presenters and the photograph shown on screen was of an entirely different Asian American actor.

Amid the current climate of awareness regarding racism and violence toward AAPI people in the U.S., the slights struck a nerve with viewers of the awards and those who learned about what happened online afterwards.

After East West announced it would be cutting ties with LASA, other companies quickly came out to say they would as well–showing solidarity with East West, and expressing their own

year old fan.

The allegations came from a young man who states after he made a TikTok video the YouTube star sent him unsolicited nude pictures on Snapchat and pressured him into

concerns about LASA. East West Players is one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious Asian American theater companies. At the awards show, two plays co-produced by the company, Hannah and the Dread Gazebo and The Great Leap, were credited exclusively to East West’s collaborators, Fountain Theatre and the Pasadena Playhouse, respectively.

In response LASA has announced plans to undertake diversity initiatives. However a statement released by the organization described a very different path.

“It is with deep regret that the board of governors has unanimously decided to cease all operations for L.A. Stage Alliance,” the organization wrote. “We’ve had many challenges like many other organizations and at this time we are unable to continue.”

LASA also issued a statement apologizing to “Jully Lee and the AAPI community,” though not mentioning East West Players by name.

“L.A. Stage Alliance takes its dedication to equality and support of its diverse theater community and representations seriously,” the statement reads. “With that in mind, effective immediately, L.A. Stage Alliance will focus on undertaking a visible and transparent transformation so it can be held accountable to the community it serves.”

The statement from LASA also contains a list of what it characterizes as “initial steps,” including the creation of a new, diverse task force that will review and reassess the organization’s mission and activities, establishing a more diverse advisory board to specifically address issues with the Ovation Awards, and create partnerships and programs “for the benefit and equitable treatment of all its members.” sexting even though he told him he was 16.

Charles denies these allegations taking to Twitter to address them. In a statement posted on social media, he said the accusation that he “groomed this person” is “completely false”.

He claimed that the individual said at first he was 18 and that he cut off all contact after he “admitted he was 16”.

Lil Nas X “Satan Shoes” Controversy

Since releasing his controversially queer-positive music video “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” gay singer/rapper Lil Nas X has had both positive and negative reactions from the public including some controversy with athletic brand giant Nike.

The widely successful music video, which features the singer giving Satan a fiery lap dance after pole dancing down to Hell, took social media by storm with fans and critics voicing their encouragement or disapproval from conservatives.

On the heels of this success the “Old Town Road” singer partnered with Brooklyn Street-wear label MSCHF and released 666 pairs of “Satan Shoes” which sold out in less than a minute.

The red and black Nike Air Max 97 trainers included a gold pentagram and are made with 60 cubic centimeters of red ink, plus one single drop of human blood and a reference to the Bible passage Luke 10:18 written on the side: “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.”

The shoes retailed for $1,018 a pair.

Nike is suing MSCHF over its collaboration with Lil Nas X to design and release “Satan Shoes” stating they were produced “without Nike’s approval and authorization” and that it was “in no way connected with this project”.

The shoe brand brought claims of trademark infringement, trademark dilution, unfair competition and false designation of origin to

the federal court in New York.

According to The Guardian, the lawsuit K

asked the court to immediately stop MSCHF from fulfilling orders for the shoes and requested a jury trial to seek damages.

“MSCHF and its unauthorized Satan Shoes

are likely to cause confusion and dilution and create an erroneous association between MSCHF’s products and Nike,” the lawsuit said.

It continued: “There is already evidence of

significant confusion and dilution occurring in the marketplace, including calls to boycott

Nike in response to the launch of MSCHF’s Satan Shoes based on the mistaken belief that

Nike has authorised or approved this product.”

The lawsuit was ruled in Nike’s favor

against MSCHF Product Studio, who sold the

footwear, and a product recall is included as part of the settlement.

This means that everyone who bought a pair

of the ‘Satan shoes’ will be refunded in order “to remove them from circulation”.

In continuing his comical social media

presence Lil Nas X took to Twitter imploring fans to keep streaming “Montero (Call Me By

Your Name)” so he could afford to “pay for this damn Nike lawsuit”.

Trans Visibility Day Proclamation From President Biden

March 31 marked the 12th anniversary of Trans Visibility Day and the first time a sitting president has ever made a proclamation for Trans Visibility Day. Transgender Day of Visibility (or TDOV) was founded in 2009 by Rachel Crandall, a Michiganbased transgender activist and the Executive Director of Transgender Michigan. It was started as a day of awareness to celebrate the successes of transgender and gender-nonconforming people and is an important day for the LGBTQ community.

TDOV is a day dedicated to honor and empower the lives of transgender and nonbinary people.

Compared to the previous administration this current administration shows their commitment to being an ally to the LGBTQ community.

To further that commitment President Biden issued the first proclamation on Trans Visibility Day. President Biden issued the following proclamation: “Today, we honor and celebrate the achievements and resiliency of transgender individuals and communities. Transgender Day of Visibility recognizes the generations of struggle, activism, and courage that have brought our country closer to full equality for transgender and gender non-binary people in the United States and around the world. Their trailblazing work has given countless transgender individuals

the bravery to live openly and authentically.

This hard-fought progress is also shaping an increasingly accepting world in which peers at school, teammates and coaches on the playing field, colleagues at work, and allies in every corner of society are standing in support and solidarity with the transgender community.

In spite of our progress in advancing civil rights for LGBTQ+ Americans, too many transgender people — adults and youth alike — still face systemic barriers to freedom and equality.

Transgender Americans of all ages face high rates of violence, harassment, and discrimination.

Nearly one in three transgender Americans have experienced homelessness at some point in life. Transgender Americans continue to face discrimination in employment, housing, health care, and public accommodations. The crisis of

“Trans Los Angeles” A Film Full Of Queer Latinx Talent

“Trans Los Angeles” is an anthology composed of four short films directed and written by transgender director Kase Peña.

Each of them addresses the daily existence of different trans characters.

Carmen Carrera, Stephanie Beatriz and YaYa Gosselin are part of the cast in the short entitled Period, which focuses on Vergara (Carrera) when she is just out of prison and gets a part-time job as a babysitter for a little girl (Gosselin). In parallel, she keeps up the sex work that got her behind bars in the first place.

It’s the work of Peña’s own production company, Trans Los Angeles LLC, along with Evelyn Martinez and Kristi Lugo, who also worked side by side on another HBO-acquired short, Full Beat.

Transgender icon Carmen Carrera is a well-known activist who appeared on RuPaul’s Drag Race, its spin-off RuPaul’s

Drag U and the sitcom Brooklyn NineNine. We will see her again before the end of the year alongside Lin-Manuel in the musical “In The Heights”.

In response to the sadly frequent transphobic attacks in the United States, Latin America and many other countries, a whole series of productions starring transgender characters are emerging, seeking to give visibility to the collective and tell stories in which they can see themselves represented.

West Hollywood Celebrates National Poetry Month

The City of West Hollywood will celebrate National Poetry Month in April with a variety of events and exhibitions honoring poets and art of poetry.

Throughout the month of April, the City of West Hollywood will honor living poets by featuring selections of their poetry on street pole banners along Santa Monica Boulevard.

Currently there are 43 poets honored, and each year the West Hollywood City Poet Laureate selects two additional poets to honor. This year’s honorees are Ryka Aoki and Tommy Pico, with an additional banner honoring City Poet Laureate and The Pride LA’s partner Brian Sonia-Wallace.

On Monday, April 5, 2021 at 6 p.m., the City Council of the City of West Hollywood issued a commemorative National Poetry Month proclamation, which was received by West Hollywood City Poet Laureate Brian Sonia-Wallace. The presentation took place online and is now viewable on the City’s YouTube channel. The West Hollywood City Poet Laureate also debuted a new poem he created, which combines lines submitted by 53 West Hollywood residents and visitors.

On Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at 6 p.m., as part of the City’s WeHo Reads series, there was a poetry reading and conversation about representation in relation to the history of the local LGBTQ rights movement with Gustavo Hernandez, a poet with a new poetry collection Flower Grand First, and Rocío Carlos, author of the (other) house whose work was included in LACMA’s Pacific Standard Time exhibition, Those of This America. The event featured musical guests Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles, who have as part of their group the first openly transgender woman in the history of mariachi. The event, titled Exploring the Landscape of the Gay Rights Movement, took place online and was free to attend.

The City of West Hollywood began its City Poet Laureate program in 2014, with each poet serving for a two-year term. The City Poet Laureate serves as an ambassador of West Hollywood’s vibrant literary culture and leads the promotion of poetry in the City, including assisting with its annual celebration of National Poetry Month.

Brian Sonia-Wallace began his appointment in October 2020 following West Hollywood’s third City Poet Laureate, Charles Flowers (2018-2020). Previous City Poet Laureates include Kim Dower (2016-2018), who initiated the Citywide Collaborative Poem and Steven Reigns, West Hollywood’s inaugural City Poet Laureate (2014-2016), who implemented the City’s annual Poetry Month street banner project, which honors living poets and brings snippets of poetry into the streets of West Hollywood.

Brian Sonia-Wallace has been writing poems for strangers and neighbors on the streets of West Hollywood and at City of West

Hollywood events since the WeHo Reads 2014 season. A social practice poet straddling the lines between literature and community engagement, his 2020 debut from Harper Collins, The Poetry of Strangers: What I Learned Traveling America With a Typewriter, was lauded as “full of optimism and wide-eyed wonder” by The New York Times. He teaches creative writing through the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program and Get Lit – Words Ignite.

In 2019, Sonia-Wallace received a grant from the City of West Hollywood’s One City One Pride LGBTQ Arts Festival to create Pride Poets, a project that brought poets on

typewriters to the streets of West Hollywood to create more than 700 original works based on one-on-one interactions, and in 2020 brought together more than 100 LGBTQ+ poets for virtual shows during the COVID-19 quarantine. Pride Poets has been featured in The Advocate, and Sonia-Wallace’s work has, additionally, been profiled by The New York Times, The Guardian, The Poetry Foundation, NPR, ABC7, and Telemundo. Most recently Sonia-Wallace has partnered with The Pride LA to curate monthly poems featuring his work and works from other poets titled Pride Poets’ Corner.
