Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Culinary Arts Program Served Hundreds For Thanksgiving Holiday

Nearly 900 people served By TimoThy michael

The Los Angeles Culinary Arts program served nearly 900 people Thanksgiving meals making it the largest undertaking so far. The meals were prepared days prior to Thanksgiving in the commercial teaching kitchen that is part of the Center’s Anita May Rosenstein Campus. Hundreds were packaged by an assembly line of volunteers inside the Campus’s Pride Hall early Tuesday morning and then delivered by another fleet of volunteers to senior clients throughout the city. “We made double what we did last year,” said Culinary Arts Executive Chef Instructor Leslie Riley. “We were looking to make the meal traditional but to give it a little extra flavor, and that’s why we have the gingerorange-cranberry sauce and the thyme-and-

The Center Long Beach Older Adult Service’s Rolls Out In-person & Hybrid Programming

Socially distant, outdoor in-person gatherings are slowly coming back By TimoThy michael

The Center’s Older Adult Services Program rolls out in-person activities and adopts a hybrid programming model. Socially distant, outdoor in-person gatherings are slowly coming back. These opportunities to connect are essential to the socio-emotional support of individuals to reduce isolation and loneliness, and are

designed to keep participants active and engaged in the community. In-person meetings currently offered through the Older Adult Services Program are “Coffee Talk Tuesday”, “Walk it OUT,” and holiday gatherings in November and December. Besides in-person activities, The Center will continue offering virtual opportunities for participants in the Older Adults Program. These activities are designed to connect individuals who are home-bound, do not have access to transportation, and/or do not feel comfortable attending in-person events yet. Virtual programming currently includes a weekly online social group, “Talk it OUT” and a monthly “ Virtual Cooking Hour.” The program is currently conducting a feedback

survey for their monthly affinity groups, Lez Chat and Encore Men, to determine if the groups should meet virtually or in person. The Older Adult Services Program will also celebrate “Friendsgiving” with a socially distant outdoor gathering. Every community member who attended received an individually boxed Thanksgiving-style meal enough to serve two people. Individuals who are homebound, did not have access to transportation, and/or did not feel comfortable attending in-person events yet can opt for a delivery. A group of staff and volunteers delivered Thanksgiving-style meal boxes, which will include turkey, traditional stuffing, mashed potatoes, homemade brown gravy, green salad, green beans, cranberry sauce, and homemade

pumpkin pie. If you are an LGBTQ Older Adult, care for someone who identifies as LGBTQ, or are friends or family of choice of someone who identifies as LGBTQ, please consider joining one of our many activities! You can visit https://www.centerlb.org/seniorservices/
