City of WeHo to Host Clothing Drive for LGBTQ Youth The City of West Hollywood will host its eighth annual clothing drive for the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Youth Services program on January 13.

“The New Year is the perfect time to clean out your closet and lend a helping hand to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth in need,” a statement from the City read. “Many young LGBT people at the Center do not have warm winter clothing, nor do they have professional clothing for job interviews or to wear as they start their careers; travel-sized, new hygiene items.”

The clothing drive for LA LGBT Center’s Youth Services is an important way for the West Hollywood community to show its support for the life changing programs offered at the LA LGBT Center, City of WeHo Program Administrator Elizabeth Anderson said in an interview.

“By donating gently used items to the clothing drive, community members play a part in helping youth along their paths to reach their dreams.

Community member donations are worn by youth as they complete their GEDs, land their first jobs, learn from mentors, heal and recover, and make lasting friendships,” Anderson said.

The Center needs jackets, coats and ponchos, hoodies, sweats, new packages of socks and underwear. Items needed besides clothes include

toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, feminine menstrual products, shaving items; as well as boxes of granola bars.

The Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Youth Center supports the essential needs of LGBT young people by connecting them with health, mental health and housing services along with educational, and employment opportunities. The Center is a supportive community and a welcoming safe space for youth to connect.

Last year’s drive was so successful that it took multiple truckloads to get all the clothing donations to the LA LGBT Center. Anderson said that the City is proud of the community’s response and look forward to another successful drive this year to help LGBT youth and support the amazing programs at the LA LGBT Center.

Anderson said that the clothing drive is an important way for the community to know its making a difference in the lives of individual LGBT youth and that the community is an important stakeholder in the broader West Hollywood Homeless Initiative.An important strategy of the initiative is to empower community members to engage and support solutions to address homelessness; this clothing drive is an easy way for the community to participate.

New LGBT Center to Serve Community in South LA The Los Angeles LGBT Center will be growing yet again.

On January 11, the Center will open its south campus in the Leinert neighborhood of South LA. Before this, the most recent campus to open was the Anita May Rosenstein campus last year.

“Thanks to our coalition of four partners and Los Angeles County, Center South will be a welcoming space for those who seek

essential services and compassionate care so that they may thrive as healthy, equal, and complete members of society,”Center CEO Lorri L. Jean said. “As part of the South Los Angeles community, we will be able to expand on our 50-year-plus history of caring for the LGBT community throughout Los Angeles.”

The new facility – known as Center South – will be 5,500 square feet. It will

include HIV testing, access to PrEP and PEP services, housing case management, mental health services, a computer lab, drop-in safe space and more.

The campus was supported with a grant from LA County. It is the first expansion into south LA. It signifies a long-term commitment to care for the LGBT people throughout the entire city. Four local organizations partnered with the Center to help address societal and health needs of locals: Bienestar Human Services, Black AIDS Institute, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and The Wall Las Memorias Project.

All of Center South’s programs and services will be provided for free or at low cost to everyone, with a focus on serving the needs of young gay and bisexual men of color ages 12 to 29. South LA had the second highest rate of HIV diagnoses in the county, according to the 2017 Los Angeles County Annual HIV Surveillance Report,.

The rate continues to rise among young Black and Latino gay and bisexual men.

There will be an opening ceremony for the Center South on January 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the new campus, located at 2313W.

Honoring Timothy Dean One Year Later

An intimate gathering was held Tuesday, Jan. 7 at West Hollywood Park to honor the 1-year anniversary of 55-year-old fashion consultant Timothy Dean’s passing.

“They say time heals everything, but even after one year, the pain of losing Timothy Dean is still real and hard for those who knew and loved him,” public affairs strategist Jasmyne Cannick said in a Facebook post Tuesday afternoon.

On January 7, 2019, Dean was the second gay black man found dead from an overdose in Ed Buck’s apartment. Gemmel Moore faced a similar fate as Dean in July 2017, but no lawsuits were filed.

At the memorial event, Dean’s friends spoke about their memories of him. Friends said that Dean loved to travel and play basketball. He was a sharp dresser and lighthearted.

“Tim is very dramatic, very loving, very caring,” one friend said during the memorial.

“No one’s perfect, and he didn’t try to be. He was just Tim. To have him taken away in such a public way — this is something that we will live with forever. There are media people out there who will go after what Tim did instead

of who Tim was… This man was loved.”

Many felt they hadn’t been able to mourn properly due to the sensationalized and public nature of Dean’s death.

“No one, none of us – no matter who you were or what you might have mistakenly done … no one deserves to … die the way that Gemmel [Moore] and Tim died,” one friend said during her speech at the memorial. No one deserves to be taken from the ones that love him in that way… And then to be vilified in the news.Tim can not have died for nothing.

So that man [Ed Buck] has to go down.”

The memorial ended with a chant to create peace and strength for Buck’s alleged victims.

Moore’s bother Jerome Kitchen, who was at the memorial, led the crowd: “Say his name,” Kitchen shouted.

“Gemmel Moore!” The crowd chanted back three times.

“Say his name,” Kitchen said again.

Three CA Bills for the LGBTQ+ Community Senate Bills 132, 145 and 201 were all table for various reasons in 2019.

Three key pieces of California legislation that were tabled last year for various reasons will see the floor in 2020.

These bills – SB 132, SB 145 and SB 201 were all introduced by openly gay Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and were co-sponsored by Equality California.

SB 132, the Transgender Respect, Agency and Dignity Act, aims to improve the living conditions for transgender inmates.

It would allow incarcerated transgender people in California to be housed based on their gender identity. It would also require that transgender inmates be referred to by their preferred pronouns, name and gender.

SB 145 is the LGBTQ Young People Nondiscrimination in the Sex Offender Registry

from having to be listed on the state’s registry for sleeping with a boyfriend or girlfriend under the age of 18.

SB 201 would ban medically unnecessary surgeries on intersex infants. This would allow the individual to make the decision for themselves when hey are older. Currently, intersex infants often undergo cosmetic surgeries to help assign a gender. Weiner Tod the B.A.R. that the bill will be amended so that the age of informed consent is set at age 6.

“By that age kids can express, you know, what they want,” Weiner said. “They know what they want to look like and they can express their gender.”

The Senate committees has until January 24 to send it to the full Senate for a floor vote. That Chamber must pass it by January 31, sending it to the Assembly for approval.

PLAY PREVIEW: A Queer Tribute to Frida Kahlo Frida Kahlo was born July 6, 1907 and died July 13, 1954. Her death certificate alleges cause of death as “pulmonary embolism” but no autopsy was allowed and she was immediately cremated.

While many movies, television dramas and stage productions have been made on Kahlo, none zoomed in on the last week of the woman’s life.

Her death has been an open-ended and unanswered question mark. In fact many believe that there was a cover up. Until now…

Back by popular demand and with a grant from LA County Arts, DAC and CAC, “Frida: Stroke of Passion” premieres February 7 in Boyle Heights for six shows.

The play explores Kahlo’s mental, emotional and physical condition during the last week of her life – exposing her love affair with famous Mexican singer Chavela Vargas, Josephine Baker, Trotsky, a Cuban spy and her complex passionate love for Diego.

The Pride L.A. spoke with actress Odalys Nanin about what it was like to portray this iconic artist. Check it out:

In one sentence, what is “Frida: Stroke of Passion” ?

It’s a revealing look into the last week of Frida Kahlo’s life and the mysterious cover up of who or what killed her Can you elaborate more? What first interested you in this play?

I wanted to show a part of Frida that no one knows about – her physical, emotional and mental state of mind during the week before she died. I explored her pain, fears, lovers, her fervor for Diego and her paintings. But most of all I revealed the cover up behind her death.

Can Frida be considered part of the LGBTQ+ community?

Absolutely !Frida was bisexual and my play reveals her long list of famous female lovers such as Chavela Vargas, Maria Felix, Josephine Baker, Tina Modotti and her last Lover Teresa Proenza a Cuban spy. She had many male lovers such as Leon Trotsky, Jose Bartolli, Nicholas Murray but her female lovers where always pushed under the carpet.

How does the play explore this?

By revealing her female lovers and those relationships.

What was the most challenging part of the play for you?

The most challenging part was to be true to her pain and suffering. Specially because I was dealing with the last week of her life.

Her right leg had been amputated from the knee down so she is either in her wheel chair or bed ridden. She was under a lot of pain killers and alcohol in order to numb her pain. So she was between a daze of

sleep and awakening.

What can guests/attendees expect from the play?

To discover the true spirit of Frida Kahlo who had a passion for painting, living and a passion for loving to the max.

Ellen DeGeneres Brings Home the Gold The 77th annual Golden Globes looked a little bit more LGBTQ-inclusive, and talkshow host and LGBTQ+ icon Ellen DeGeneres’ win is no exception.
