New Thrift Store Opens at Previous Location of “Black Ink” Along Swarthmore Ave
It Is the Latest to Replace a Store Around the Village That Closed Its Doors Last Year
By Zach ArmstrongA new thrifting experience is available to those on the Westside with the recent opening of Magoo’s just a short walk away from the Palisades Village.
Located at 869 Swarthmore Ave., Magoo’s is a buy/sell/trade establishment open to those in the market to stock up their wardrobe or exchange various clothing items for store credit or cash.
According to its Instagram account, the store offers items from trendy brands including Yeezy, Nike, Adidas, Palm Angels, Gallery Department, Lacoste, Chrome Hearts, and others.
The store held its grand opening on

Saturday, April 27.
The opening of Magoo’s comes nearly a year after the location’s previous tenant, fine stationery and gift store Black Ink, halted operations. The gift and holiday items shop was founded by former CBS news producer Patti Black in 1998.
“This past year we enjoyed the biggest sales EVER in the store. And the wholesale division of Black Ink grew three times over Covid! Lack of sales is not the reason I am closing. After 25 years, it’s just time!,” Black said in an email to clients around the time of the store’s closing. She went on to plug Black Ink’s new gift website, which can be found at shop.blackinkca.com.
Last year, while Palisades Village experienced a slew of new openings from international luxury brands such as Saint Laurent and Isabel Marant, multiple smaller independent outposts surrounding the shopping district closed their doors. These included, in addition to Black Ink, Collection Antiques and Books along Antioch Street, Bellezza
Additional Lane on PCH Planned Around Tramonto Slide
Caltrans
Closed the Right Lane for Safety
Which Took Place in February
Since Tuesday May 28 and through the morning of Friday, May 31, construction will be occurring on the Pacific Coast Highway to create a second lane on northbound State Route 1 at Porto Marina Way, north of Sunset Blvd. in Pacific Palisades.
At least one lane will remain open during construction in each direction of PCH between Sunset Blvd. and Coastline Drive from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m.
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) closed the right lane for safety after the “Tramonto Slide” which took place in February. The damage, according to the department,
was further saturated by multiple storms the following month. By Friday morning, May 31, Caltrans said PCHG will be realigned to have two lanes open in each direction at Porto Marina Way near the Tramonto Slide.
The total cost of the lane realignment project is about $3.35 million, which is funded through SHOPP, according to the department. The contractor is Interstate Civil Construction.
Referred to as the “Tramonto Slide,” the affected area has been a recurring issue over the years. Previous efforts involved clearing slide debris to the highway shoulder to reopen lanes. However, the recent slide, originating outside of Caltrans’ jurisdiction, poses significant challenges.
An emergency Director’s Order for the project seeked funding for the creation of a second northbound lane to compensate for the closure of the right lane due to safety hazards posed by the slide, said a release from the department.
Given the limited space in the median,

Last month, Mirror Media Group reported the opening of the new Mavven
Mercantile, a store offering workshops and fair trade items, which opened at the same location of the former Collection Antiques and Books.

the plan necessitates shifting both northbound and southbound lanes toward the beach, utilizing the shoulder of the current southbound lanes. Construction
efforts will involve grinding, paving, restriping, and the removal of lane delineators from the median, secured with concrete and bolts.
City Halts Use of Herbicide at Potrero Canyon Park
In a Letter to L.A. City Council, PPCC President Maryam Zar Expressed That Environmental and Health Warnings Were Ignored
By Zach ArmstrongCity workers have halted the use of Cheetah Pro, a herbicide used to control unwanted plant vegetation, in and around Potrero Canyon Park after the Pacific Palisades Community Council raised several concerns.
In a letter to L.A. City Council, PPCC President Maryam Zar expressed that environmental and health warnings were ignored in the chemical’s utilization. Among them were inhalation risks on account of nearby kids in recreation areas, failing to close off areas for 12 hours after application, applying the compound directly on areas with water surfaces –such as the riparian corridor which leads

to the ocean, and harmful elements such as Glufosinate-ammonium being included in the chemical.
Zar went on to state that, whereas Cheetah Pro is intended to be sprayed directly, it seemed to have been sprayed broadly at Potrero Canyon. “As images as well as the attestation of rim residents near the sprayed area show, this application has destroyed native plants, green space, and
harmed the Park’s (deliberate) biodiversity.” stated the letter.
During its May 23rd meeting, CD11 Field Deputy Michael Amster confirmed that the use of Cheetah Pro at Potrero Canyon was put on hold, according to the Pacific Palisades Community Council.
According to the website of Nufarm, an Australian agricultural chemical company that makes the product, Cheetah Pro stagnates undesirable vegetation around
ornamental trees, shrubs, potted plants, landscape trim and natural areas. Among the weeds it can be used to control are Bahiagrass, Bermudagrass, Chickweed, Clover and Groundsel.
The George Wolfberg Park at Potrero Canyon is a 46-acre, mile-long park with trails through the riparian canyon leading from the Palisades Recreation Center to the curb of the Pacific Coast Highway.

Report: Judge Requests More Briefing on Bel-Air Bay Club Repair Dispute

The Bel-Air Bay Club Argues That Proposed Repairs Are Exempt From Requiring a Permit
According to a report from City News Service, a judge requested additional briefing regarding a petition by members of the Bel-Air Bay Club seeking permission from the California Coastal Commission to perform repairs to their facility without a coastal development permit.
The Bel-Air Bay Club Ltd. has filed a legal action in Los Angeles Superior Court, arguing that heavy winter rains in 2023 caused significant damage to their facility, and the proposed repairs are exempt from requiring a permit under the state Public Resources Code.
However, the Attorney General’s Office contends that in the past 30 years, the Coastal Commission has approved a disaster exemption related to storm-
related wave action only twice, CNS reported.
Judge Stephen I. Goorvitch heard arguments on May 1 and took the matter under submission. On Tuesday, he granted a request by club attorneys to file supplemental briefing regarding the standard of review. A briefing schedule was set, with the judge planning to decide on June 10 whether to hold another hearing or take the case under submission again.
The club’s petition states that their concrete lanai, built in 1950, was heavily damaged during the January 2023 storms, according to CNS. The lanai provides substantial revenue during the summer by serving food and drinks to visitors. The club asserts that they only seek to restore the lanai to its prior condition, not to expand or change its use.
“The storm’s combination of heavy rainfall, high wind gusts of up to 50 mph, and dangerous surf created massive wave action that eroded the compacted sand underneath the lanai structure,” the petition states.

Soaring Twenties: Support International Bird Rescue in Gatsby-Themed Event
Giving A Voice to Waterbirds Through Conservation
By Susan PayneA spectacular soiree is coming to Los Angeles to help showcase the historical and important work of International Bird Rescue, a global conservation organization that has responded to over 250 oil spills and wildlife emergencies and cared for more than 160,000 birds on six continents since its inception in 1971. Bird Rescue’s mission is to inspire people to act toward balance with the natural world by rescuing waterbirds in crisis.
Embrace glitz and glamor while making a difference in the lives of birds during the Soaring Twenties Benefit on the evening of June 8 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
Promising a night of opulence, style and grandeur, International Bird Rescue presents Hailey Winslow, an actress,
FOX Los Angeles reporter, adventure travel television host and friend of Bird Rescue, as master of ceremony. Guests can look forward to the incredible words of keynote speaker Tammah Watts, a bird storyteller, therapist and author of Keep Looking Up: Your Guide to the Powerful Healing of Birdwatching, followed by the live, vibrant sounds of 20s and 30s Jazzera music alongside a mix of modern pop, jazz and lounge hits from The Gatsby Gang.
International Bird Rescue aims to give a voice to waterbirds through conservation, emergency response, rehabilitation and research. Its history dates back to 1971 with founder Alice Berkner, a retired nurse and animal lover who helped to invent and formalize oiled bird rehabilitation following the Standard Oil accident in the San Francisco Bay.
The organization rehabilitates about 3,500-6,000 birds each year. The most treated bird species include Brown Pelicans, Western Gulls, Northern Fulmars, Western Grebes, American Coots, Common Loons, Black-crowned Night-Herons, Snowy Egrets, and Great Blue Herons.
“Our work saves lives each and every

day. Whether orphaned, injured or fishhooked, birds need us, and thanks to our volunteers and supporters we are able to respond, rehabilitate and release them back into the wild,” said Alex Domeyko, Director of Development and Partnerships.
Bird Rescue has crisis response centers in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Anchorage. The Soaring Twenties Benefit is the first major fundraising event the organization has held in Los Angeles. Proceeds will benefit the organization’s work in emergency preparedness and response, day-to-day aquatic bird care and scientific research.
Tickets for the soiree cost $200 with early bird pricing available until May 1st. Regular ticket prices increase to $225 after the first. The event includes dinner buffet and cash bar, a silent auction, live music, a best-dressed contest, and more. Millennium Biltmore offers daily and valet parking. Attendees are encouraged to don Gatsby or formal attire, spread their wings, and celebrate an evening of compassion and community.
“Your attendance at our benefit supports an incredibly worthy cause – we are all part of the natural world. Come enjoy a night of food, cocktails, music and fun at

our Soaring Twenties event and make a difference for birds and nature,” Domeyko said.

Hang-Ten Therapeutics-Surf Therapy for Kids: Catching Waves and Finding your Calm
A different type of therapy is making waves in Los Angeles.
Hang-Ten Therapeutics, founded by Naomi Matanick, a licensed pediatric occupational therapist with specialties in infant and child development, uses surfing as her primary method of intervention for children experiencing difficulty in development.
Difficulties such as processing sensory information can make skills that seem simple, feel insurmountable, impacting physical and emotional regulation, body awareness, motor skills, visual skills, and attention. Matanick found the ocean, and surfing, to be a grounding practice, and therefore, asked herself, how can this translate in the field of pediatric occupational therapy.
“I’ve always loved the water, the ocean, and have learned that surf therapy exists, but primarily, it exists in the world of adults. I saw the therapeutic benefits of the ocean for myself and wanted to see if I could really translate
what I do as an occupational therapist using surfing as a therapeutic tool for kids,” Matanick said.
Surf therapy combines the physical activity of surfing with structured activities to help promote physical, psychological, and social well-being. For kids, catching waves is a way to achieve therapeutic goals in a lowpressure environment.
“Sometimes, when kids engage in sports, there’s a lot of pressure for performance and socially. Without having the pressure of what might come with a sport, kids can play freely and be comfortable in their own bodies. I see what their specific needs are, like a motor goal or strengthening goal, and we use the surfboard to focus specifically on that goal,” she said.
Hang-Ten Therapeutics works to empower children, instill confidence and allow them to gain a stronger sense of self-identity and belonging through surfing, while gaining vital skills along the way.
Matanick said she may have a child who doesn’t have the physical ability to stand up on a surfboard or is terrified of the ocean. In that case, she encourages them to catch a wave on their stomach, or alternatively work with the elements

nearby – sand, water, or the board outside of the water – to achieve goals.
“We do some work on the beach and gradually, overtime, they get comfortable with moving onto the surfboard. The practice is adapted and changed for each individual child and their needs. Not only their needs, but their wants, as well,” Matanick said.
Some children have a hard time working through difficult emotions or find it challenging to be inside of a clinic. On the water or the beach, Matanick said she has seen them gain
back power and motivation on the beach and in the water, and all sudden, they are more regulated, listening and more attentive as they are working toward their goals in a free and playful space.
“It can be a really powerful experience for kids,” Matanick said.

Santa Monica Hotel’s New Look and Enhanced Amenities Transform Lincoln Boulevard
Owner Announces Upcoming Versatile Event Space
By Susan PayneSituated at the vibrant intersection of Grant Street and Lincoln Boulevard, the newly rebranded Santa Monica Hotel is casting a new light on the neighborhood with its refreshed façade and enhanced amenities. Jon Farzam, the visionary owner, is set to repurpose the hotel’s parking lot, providing the Santa Monica community with a novel outdoor event space that

promises versatility and charm.
Over the past four months, the transformation of this 30-room gem, previously known as the Santa Monica Motel, has been remarkable. Introducing a brighter color scheme, an engaging mural by a local artist, and strategically placed lighting that accentuates the central palm tree, the property has received a comprehensive makeover. The revamped courtyard now serves as a welcoming lounge, complete with breakfast service and access to electric bikes, enhancing guests’ experiences as they explore local cafes, shops, and the iconic Santa Monica Beach.
Addressing the outdated motel concept, Farzam was motivated by positive guest feedback to elevate the establishment’s status. “The transformation from a motel to a hotel reflects our commitment to providing an environment that exceeds guest expectations,” Farzam commented, emphasizing the importance of shedding the motel’s old persona for a more deserving, refined identity.
Highlighting the hotel’s unique features, Farzam adds, “Santa Monica Hotel now offers a fantastically unique backdrop for film and photography projects, echoing the creative spirit of our city.” The newly refreshed guestroom décor, featuring

stunning palm frond wallpaper and exquisite rattan furniture, ushers guests into vacation mode instantly. Modern amenities such as LED mirrors, Nespresso machines, and device charging stations in every room, along with table-top games on the patio, ensure a blend of comfort and entertainment.
To further enhance guest experience, the Santa Monica Hotel is proud to introduce a new texting service, allowing guests to seamlessly communicate with guest services for any requests, including ordering snacks and drinks directly to their room. This service ensures that our guests’ needs are met promptly and efficiently, providing an even more relaxed and catered stay.
Strategically located near the famous Third Street Promenade, the hotel offers
guests immediate access to this renowned outdoor shopping and dining esplanade, enhancing their stay with convenience and local culture.
The hotel’s intimate size fosters a cozy, personalized atmosphere, where the staff’s dedication to service shines through in thoughtful gestures, including handwritten notes for special occasions. “Our aim is to make every stay memorable, treating our guests to unparalleled hospitality and comfort,” Farzam asserts.
Looking ahead, the Santa Monica Hotel is preparing to launch a new phase in its evolution with the conversion of its parking lot into a dynamic space for art exhibitions, movie premieres, red carpet events, and concerts. “We’re excited to offer our space to the community, envisioning a hub for local events and celebrations,” says Farzam. Although the timeline for these enhancements is still under consideration, Farzam’s enthusiasm for collaboration with local event organizers and the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce is palpable, especially regarding the upcoming ribboncutting ceremony to officially unveil the hotel’s new event space and renovations. Taking you there is Malibu Discovery, an elevated tour experience that showcases the uniqueness and scenic beauty of LA’s most exciting venues and locations, founded by Ken Fasola and Mike Dwyer more than 10 years ago.
“Most people think about celebrities, beaches and surfing in Malibu and while that’s true, the most unique and beautiful scenery is found in wine country, historical Malibu, in the hills,” Fasola said.
Malibu Discovery offers a variety of signature and custom tours excursions and has earned the reputation as one of LA’s Best Tour Companies, hosting over 14,000 tours since its inception.
“Our mission was to create a signature tour that showcased and highlights all the great things about Malibu,” Fasola said. “But we’ve grown in the last 10 years, and showcase more of LA’s unique and beautiful history. For locals, it’s the perfect way to learn about the history of our own backyard.”
Malibu Discovery’s signature tour, the Malibu Wine Trail Tour, is a stunning journey along the Pacific Coast and into the canyons of Malibu Wine Country, which now boasts its own AVA, or American Viticultural Area, a specific type of appellation of origin on wine labels. This six-hour tour explores the variety of wines that Malibu has to offer at tasting rooms like Rosenthal, Cornell and Stonehaus.
For connoisseurs of wine who also love sightseeing and adventure, Malibu Discovery hosts a number of sightseeing tours, with a little less wine, more adventure, Fasola said.
The Premier Getty Wine Tour is an unforgettable day of world-class art, wine and delicious food visiting the world-famous Getty Villa Museum along the Pacific Coast in Malibu.
“From a cultural standpoint, the Getty Villa is absolutely stunning and world class — that tour has the broadest cultural aspects, Greek and Roman antiquities housed in a re-created Roman country home, it’s outstanding,” Fasola said.
The Malibu Movie & Celebrity Lifestyle Tour takes guests through mountain passes with ocean views to spot celebrity homes and visits a famous Hollywood western film set and other movie and television locations. “Geographically, Malibu is one of the biggest cities in the country, 21 miles down the coast and 10 miles inland with only 13,000 residents. It’s kind of rural and spread out, so to know all the secrets and pockets of history that are found here, you need a guide. You can’t take an Uber and get the same experience,” Fasola said.
“All of our tours are journeys. Afterward, people have explored so many parameters
and aspects of Malibu and everything comes together because our tours and professional tour guides have set the bar high in this industry,” he added.
Malibu Discovery offers its tours for corporate events, both large and small, parties, special occasions, custom tours and romantic getaways, available year round.

A Favorite Among Frequent Travelers: H. Savinar Luggage Co
Get Away With Luggage You Can Trust
By Susan PayneFor all your travel and exploration needs this summer, H. Savinar Luggage Co. is a dealer you can trust.
Serving Los Angeles with two brick and mortar locations, H. Savinar has been helping generations of family find brand name, quality luggage since its inception in 1916 — more than a century ago — and is one of the oldest luggage stores in the United States.
Whether you are looking for luggage with multi-terrain maneuverability or security and durability for peace of mind while traveling, your next destination should be an H. Savinar retail store in either Culver City or Canoga Park.
“Our warehouse is filled with one of the
largest selections of nationally advertised brands of luggage, briefcases, laptop cases and travel accessories at the guaranteed lowest prices,” said Joey Diamond, owner of H. Savinar.
Diamond has had a 39-year relationship with the company, starting out as a monogrammer, then moving into sales, and eventual ownership of the company in 2016, after the 2010 passing of Lewis Savinar, son of former owners Hyman and Harold.
“I quickly jumped into Lewis’s shoes to keep the business running. This was especially difficult because of how close we were. Lewis treated me like a son and he was widely respected in the industry. Not easy to fill those shoes,” Diamond said.
H. Savinar carries most major brands such as Briggs & Riley, Tumi, Victornox, Bric’s, Samsonsite, Travel Pro, Delsey, High Sierra, Ricardo, Roncato and Swiss Army, and is an authorized dealer for every line.
“We vigorously search for a better advertised price on our products, and
therefore, consistently have the lowest prices in the industry. Whatever your travel needs are, we have the right bag at the right price and we’re here to service it if anything goes wrong,” Diamond said.
Throughout H. Savinar’s 108 years of business, the company has forged excellent relations with a number of manufacturers and customers, giving you the best options for luggage that fit your need.
“We treat customers like family here. This is one of those stores that right when you walk in, you know you’re going to have a good experience. We don’t just try to sell you a piece of luggage. We find out your traveling habits and needs to find you the right bag. Once we find it, we’ll make sure you know all the features,” said Diamond.
Before a piece of luggage leaves H. Savinar’s warehouse, each item is inspected for quality. The company is also an authorized repair center for most manufacturers.
“We’ve seen a lot of changes in the 108 years we’ve been in business, but one thing that hasn’t changed is our dedication to our

In addition to a numerous selection of luggage, H. Savinar offers personalized monogramming and embroidery services — initials, names or company logos. For luggage, this is essential in differentiating your personal belongings from another while traveling.
For companies looking to treat their employees, H. Savinar offers company logo monogramming or embroidery and individual labeling and shipping direct to your customers.

‘Mannies’ Becoming More Prevalent

Find Your Perfect Manny Through Mannies of LA
By Susan PaynePositive male role models are essential for early childhood development in protecting children against barriers that can make transition into adulthood more difficult. While the U.S. is found to have the largest rate of children living in singleparent households, ensuring your children have positive male role models can contribute to a child’s success, morality, social emotional learning and positive outlook.
Whether that be a teacher, neighbor, coach or mentor, more parents are
choosing positive male role models to enhance their children’s lives. That’s why educator Michael Lin founded Mannies of LA, a referral agency that connects families with “mannies,” male nannies who serve as positive male role models.
“I wanted to provide families with an alternative option for positive male role models. I noticed in my teaching career, especially in Los Angeles, children had tons of female role models, and there was a lack of positive male role models. Parents would ask me if I could teach their kids sports, or help with their birthday parties, and they saw how important it was to have a balance of both positive people role models,” Lin said.
Mannies, through Mannies of LA, provide a consistent positive male influence and strong emotional bond with children. Undergoing a thorough application, background check and
interview process, Lin has curated a network of mannies and works with families to find the perfect manny — one who shares the same interests as your child and meets your needs as a caregiver. Mannies are dedicated to enriching young lives with their vast experiences as teachers, athletes, behavioral therapists, musicians, artists and entertainers.
“We work one-on-one with families throughout the selection process and determine preferences, needs, budget and schedule, and any special set of skills the family is looking for in a manny. After listening to the parents and understanding what their needs are, I take that into consideration as I pair families with a manny that will engage, teach, influence, work and play with your children,” he said.
“My longtime background in education gives me a good sense of what parents are looking for, so while I’m interviewing
candidates, I’m also looking for intention and intangible items, the feeling and the way they present themselves.”
As the need for positive male role models grows, and the idea of hiring a male nanny becomes more mainstream, Lin has also grown his network of mannies to ensure the most success in pairing individuals with families, breaking down the negative perception of males working in childcare.
“One of our goals is to break that negative perception down and to show families that male nannies can do the same thing as female nannies. We understand that parents may be on the fence, so we do offer nanny referrals as well,” Lin said.
Mannies of LA has been featured on LATV’s “Get It Girl” and in VoyageLA. To learn more about Mannies of LA and find the perfect manny for your family, visit ManniesofLA.com.

Pacific Park’s purpose is to provide an authentic California amusement experience, where guests of all ages play together in a safe and unrivaled setting. And, over the years, the park has been continually upgraded and improved upon so that the fun never stops.
“We are always looking at new and exciting ways to improve the visitor experience,” says Nathan Smithson, Director of Marketing and Business Development at Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier. “This means new rides including Shark Frenzy and the Seaside Swing, games such as Whac-A-Mole, and exciting new food offerings while staying true to guests’ favorites like burgers, hotdogs, and Scoops Icecream & Treats.”
The Park opened in 1996, and having a tight maintenance schedule is important to make sure everything stays in tip-top shape. This includes recently refurbishing the famous ‘Inkie’ octopus that sits above the entranceway welcoming visitors.
Among its many other attractions, the Park is perhaps most famous for its Pacific Wheel—the world’s first and only solarpowered Ferris wheel. Measuring 85 feet, the wheel moves at 2.5 revolutions per minute with intermittent stops to pick up passengers.
Not only does the wheel provide incredible views of the Southern California coastline and Los Angeles skyline from more than 130 feet above the Pier, but it’s also lit up in the evenings by more than 174,000 energy-efficient LED lights. These lights provide spectacular computer-
generated visual entertainment and special programming to commemorate holidays and special events.
Pacific Park also boasts the only West Coast steel roller coaster located on a Pier over the Pacific Coastline. Riders are treated to refreshing ocean sprays as they rise to 55 feet in the air, enjoying spectacular views before a thrilling drop and 35 mph ride that circles the park. Another ride, Inkie’s Scrambler, is a 12-car fast-paced ride that performs a series of roundabout moves and rotations at more than 11 revolutions per minute. And Pacific Plunge is a 44foot exhilarating tower ride that leaves riders feeling weightless while providing a breathtaking view of the Pacific.
Pacific Park is so iconic it has appeared in over 500 movies and television shows, including Fat Albert, Hannah Montana, Kidsongs, 90210, Bean, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, as well as the popular video game Grand Theft Auto V. All of this makes for the quintessential Southern California experience. So, whether you want to test your skills on the Midway video games, win prizes at the Ring Toss and Water Race, be thrilled on the West Coaster, or make memories of a lifetime, you’ll be taking part in a little bit of SoCal history while you’re at it

Westside Ballet’s 50th Anniversary: A Grand Celebration of Dance Excellence and Emerging Talent
Over 90 local dancers, including star students and professional alumni, joined American Ballet Theatre Principals Isabella Boylston and James Whiteside at BroadStage May 17-18
In a grand salute to half a century of dance excellence, Westside Ballet of Santa Monica dazzled audiences with their 50th Anniversary Spring Performances. The “Masters of Movement’’ series featured two captivating performances of the Spring Showcase as well as the Gala, which paid tribute to the enduring legacy of dance and the visionaries who have shaped Westside’s history.
A Spotlight on Student Talent Hadley Hill, a 16-year-old advanced dancer, embodies the spirit of dedication and artistry that Westside Ballet nurtures. Hadley, who is part of the Los Angeles Ballet Trainee program in collaboration with Westside Ballet, balances her rigorous training schedule between the two institutions. She has been dancing at Westside Ballet since she was 14 and was showcased in the role of the “5 Girls” from George Balanchine’s “Who Cares?” in this year’s spring performances. Reflecting on her growth this season,

Hadley shares, “’Who Cares?” is a Balanchine ballet, which is a style I haven’t gotten to dive too deep into until now. It’s super challenging but also really fun! I have really enjoyed getting to experiment with the new artistic abilities that ‘Who Cares?’ allows me to explore and get to tune into the Balanchine style in new depths.”
Hadley’s passion for dance extends beyond the stage. “The things I like best about dancing are performing and having something to work towards. Being on stage is the most amazing feeling, especially since when I’m on stage I am doing what I love most, dancing,” she says. With aspirations to join a major ballet company, Hadley exemplifies the
excellence and future promise of Westside Ballet’s dancers.
Evelyn Choy, an 11-year-old dancer, is another shining star at Westside Ballet. Currently a 6th grader at John Thomas Dye School, Evelyn has been dancing at Westside Ballet since she was 5 years old. This year marks her third Spring performance with the company. Evelyn performed in “Fête de Carnivale” and the jazz piece “Dance through the Ages,” where she was a featured dancer in the 1930s section.
Evelyn’s dedication to ballet is evident in her achievements. “Ballet has helped me learn how to work hard and strive to continue improving,” she says. Evelyn also excels academically, having received

state honors in Piano Certificate of Merit and honors in school math competitions. Her future aspirations include continuing to improve her dancing and maintaining her hard work ethic.
Joining Evelyn is her sister, Isabelle Choy, who also had a featured role in the

Spring Showcase. Isabelle, 15, has been with Westside Ballet since she was six and performed as a soloist in “Classical Symphony” and in the contemporary piece “Murmurations.” Isabelle, a 9th grader at Windward School, reflects on a pivotal moment in her ballet journey: “Entering the upper division was transformative for me. It pushed me to internalize corrections and work harder, helping me grow significantly as a dancer.”
Honoring Legends and Showcasing New Talent
The Spring Showcases on May 17 and 18 presented a curated celebration of Westside Ballet’s storied past, vibrant present, and promising future. The showcases featured performances by young talents like Hadley Hill, Evelyn Choy, and Isabelle Choy, alongside excerpts from classical ballets and innovative contemporary works.

Noteworthy is the 11-year-old prodigious Spencer Collins, a recent YAGP double winner, performed his award winning solo from “Flames of Paris.”
Of the 91 student and pre-professional company dancers, 37 live or go to school in Santa Monica. This includes soloists such as Sophie Wilson from Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences, Nadia Hofer from Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences, Billie Dane and Bella Shriver from New Roads School, and others,
the timeless “Black Swan” pas de deux by Marius Petipa. Guest artists Andrea Laššáková and Adrian Blake Mitchell performed the pas de deux from George Balanchine’s contemporary masterpiece “Agon,” set to Stravinsky’s evocative score.
Alumni stars Lucia Connolly, Lyrica Woodruff, and Joy Womack graced the stage, performing pieces including Yuri Possokhov’s “Bells” pas de deux, Balanchine’s fiery “Tarantella,” and Ben

reflecting the strong local connection and diverse educational backgrounds of Westside Ballet’s dancers.
A Star-Studded Gala
The Gala on May 18th honored Patricia Neary with a Lifetime Achievement Award, celebrating her influence on American ballet and Westside Ballet students. The event featured American Ballet Theatre principal dancers Isabella Boylston and James Whiteside performing
A Tribute to Founders and a Vision for the Future
The 50th Anniversary Spring Showcase was dedicated to founders Yvonne Mounsey and Rosemary Valaire, that featured performances of Mounsey’s “Classical Symphony” and Valaire’s staging of “Sleeping Beauty.” The

program also included a diverse repertoire of dance, such as Vanessa van Wormer’s contemporary work in collaboration with Santa Monica College, Caprice Walker’s “Fête de Carnivale,” and Michele Bachar Mendicelli’s jazz and ballet pieces.
As Westside Ballet pays homage to its rich history, it remains committed to nurturing future ballet talent and enriching the cultural landscape of Southern California.
Summer Training and Camps
Westside has multiple exciting summer offerings for students. Young dancers ages 4-6 can participate in one week camps that are themed to bring favorite storybook and ballet characters to life. The first week of the Children’s camps will be a Peter Pan theme. There are multiple programs and workshops for dancers 7-19. Westside’s esteemed faculty helps grow not only the technique of the students but their love for dance and the arts. Additionally, there will be workshops taught by current and former stars of New York City Ballet.
