Turn Signal Activated at Dangerous Intersection Left-turn phasing signal installed at Sunset and Chautauqua

By Sam Catanzaro

A new turn signal is now active at a Pacific Palisades intersection where a fatal crash occurred in 2017. Councilmember Mike Bonin has announced that the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) activated a left phasing turn signal at the intersection of Sunset and Chautauqua boulevards. The signal is for westbound traffic on Sunset turning left onto Chautauqua, “The new signal will improve safety for everyone who uses the road, and also help traffic move more efficiently on the oftencrowded street, making it much easier for

drivers to safely turn when turning west from Sunset onto Chautauqua headed south, where there is a curve that prevents them from seeing oncoming traffic,” Bonin said. In 2017 36-year-old David Babalyan died in a motorcycle accident at the intersection. Pacific Palisades resident Lou Kamer was at the scene of the fatal 2017 accident. That crash involved four motorcycles traveling east on Sunset and a westbound Mercedes Benz driven by a 16-year-old boy. In addition to Babalyan’s death, the crash sent the three other motorcyclists to the hospital. At the time Kamer was serving on the PPCC, and along with then-PPCC President Maryam Za, led a persistent effort to address safety at the intersection, working with LADOT, Bonin’s office and the Los Angeles Police Department. Now after over three years of hard work, the signal has been activated. In addition, Bonin noted LADOT crews upgraded an existing crosswalk to enhance visibility for drivers as pedestrians cross the intersection.

LAPD Pre-Identifies Palisades Village as Potential Looting Target

LAPD says there are no specific intelligence threats but still ready to pre-deploy officers By Sam Catanzaro

As the trial against Derek Chauvin– the police officer charged with killing George Floyd–began in Minneapolis this month, the LAPD says it has identified Palisades Village as a potential target for looting and vandalism in the event of unrest, despite having no specific intelligence threats. Last week, Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) West Los Angeles Area Captain Jonathan Tom notified residents and business owners the department is preparing for different reactions to the trial. According to Tom, the West Los Angeles division does not have any specific intelligence regarding potential

unrest in the area, but has pre-identified locations that are likely to be targets of looting, vandalism and protests. “We do not know when the trial will conclude, but we do know that there are some in the community that are concerned about the potential for civil unrest,” Tom wrote in a letter. “My purpose in communicating with you is to let you know that West Los Angeles Area (WLA) and the Department are diligently preparing for different reactions to the trial. That being said, we fervently hope for a peaceful reaction to the outcome of the trial.” In a phone call with Palisades News, Tom said that the Westside locations are Westfield Century City, Westwood Village, Palisades Village and Wilshire Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard corridors. During the unrest of May 31, National Guard troops were called to protect Palisades Village as looting was underway in downtown Santa Monica. “If it becomes necessary, we will
