Meet the Winners of PPCC’s 2023 Holiday Awards With the theme of “sparkle and shine”, the Awards Took Place at The Draycott By Zach Armstrong With the theme of “sparkle and shine”, the Pacific Palisades Community Council 2023 Holiday Dinner was held at The Draycott to recognize those who have contributed work to help make the Palisades a supportive community. The council thanked the honorees, guests, presenters, its board, its Awards Selection and Event Committees (Sue Kohl, Jenny Li, Beth Holden-Garland, Daphne Gronich, Ryan Craig, Diana Danielle, Chris Spitz, Cindy Simon & Kimberly Bloom), and the PPCC President to make the occasion possible. Assemblymember Irwin and Councilwoman Traci Park were in attendance along with 100 locals to honor the awardees. These are the 2023 winners of the awards: CITIZEN OF THE YEAR – Cindy Kirven Cindy was Co-President of the Village Green (2022 to 2023), and is now the sole President until September 2024 as well as Vice Chair of the Palisades Forestry Committee. She created

a special 50th Anniversary Celebration of the founding of the Green, and a succession plan for an organization with an aging Board which involved meeting community volunteers that donate their time to Village Green. Cindy is most proud of her contributions in two projects. After approval to plant a memorial tree at Palisades Elementary School for Elle Nedelkovski, an 8-year-old student who passed from pediatric brain cancer, Cindy drove out and acquired a Jacaranda tree from a nursery and then dug the hole at the school. The second project was researching and writing the first draft of a position paper on restrictions on tree types planted in Los Angeles being discussed by the City Council. The paper was presented to the PPCC, who passed a motion and sent a letter to city representatives objecting to the motion. GOLDEN SPARKPLUGS – Laura Schneider Laura has been recognized for reviving the Palisades Branch Library as the President of the Pacific Palisades Library Association. Since the pandemic, Laura spearheaded the return of library programming and use of the library Community Room for use such as art shows and the Youth Writing Contest, and even celebrity talks (including from Martin Short and Eugene Levy). John Dwight A long-time resident of an apartment complex on Sunset Blvd., John has taken up

the effort to clean up and beautify the bus stop at the Sunset/Bienveneda corner by adding flowers to the planters around adjoining trees, weeded and cleaned the planters and refreshed them. He is also a retired Revere school teacher. He continues to volunteer with community activities and serve as the selfappointed Sunset/Bienveneda beautification captain. Sara Marti Sara is the Social Media Lead for Resilient Palisades, creating content for Resilient Palisades’ social media accounts including Instagram, Facebook, Tik Tok, Twitter, Nextdoor and Threads, amounting to approximately 360 posts and reels to date. When Sara took over Resilient Palisades’ social media in 2021, the organization had a following of less than 50 which has grown to over 2,500. She participates in the regular meetings of Resilient Palisades’ teams and collaborates with local organizations such as

the Palisades Village Green which she is now helping create an online presence for. Steve Cron A resident of Palisades Highland, Steve has been honored for his duties as PPCC Area 2 Representative – staying on top of the City, 3 State, County and California State Coastal Commission. He appeared at the Commission hearing to make sure awful conditions at the Temescal Ridge Trailhead restroom were addressed. Also, to make sure facilities were beautified and that the restroom would be reinstituted for full use. Work is now underway to repair and clean the Trailhead restroom. PRIDE OF THE PALISADES – Palisades P.R.I.DE. P.R.I.D.E. stands for “Protect and Renew our Identity and Environment.” and does so by making sure the Palisades has TLC in its common places and supporting the community and PPCC. Thanks to P.R.I.D.E., “Eyesores” like garish rooftop signs dating back to the ’40s have been all but eliminated. Tacky advertising benches at bus stops in and around town have been swapped for comfortable ones. Streamlined trash containers have replaced concrete. It is also responsible for the Village’s nearly two dozen new trees and more than a dozen antique-style lamp posts. New Pizzeria Filling In Former Roca Pizza Location Patrons can expect individual-sized pizzas perfected at Jemma restaurant in Hollywood

Chef and restaurateur Jackson Kalb has announced a new establishment via Instagram Jemma Pizzeria, a dedicated pizza spot poised to open in the previous location of Roca pizza at the Palisades Village development under the ownership of Rick Caruso. At Jemma Pizzeria, patrons can expect individual-sized pizzas crafted using the identical dough and sauce recipes perfected at Kalb’s recently launched Jemma restaurant in Hollywood, LA Eater

services. While the precise menu for the Palisades location is yet to be finalized, Jemma Hollywood offers a standard margherita alongside a spicier soppressata variation incorporating honey and Calabrian chiles. Departing from strict adherence to

traditional Italian cuisine, Kalb incorporates popular American elements, such as serving pizza with ranch dressing, across his establishments. Additionally, Kalb intends to feature stacked sandwiches reminiscent of the beloved schiacciata bread seen at venues like Venice’s All’Antico Vinaio.

Boxing Legend Selling Eight-Bedroom Palisades Mansion for Nearly $40M The Property Recently Reduced in Price by 9% Boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard persists in his quest to sell his expansive property in Pacific Palisades, CA, as he recently reduced the price by millions in hopes of attracting a buyer, Realtor.com posted. The eight-bedroom mansion reentered the market at $39,995,000, marking a 9% decrease from the $44 million price Leonard initially sought earlier in the year. Leonard has grappled with the sale of this property for an extended period, as the sizable residence has appeared on and off the market at various price points. Having resided in the 16,800-square-foot home with his wife for decades, the couple now aims to downsize. Previously listed as high as $52 million a couple of years ago, the current price presents a potentially appealing opportunity for buyers. Will this latest price reduction sway the outcome? The estate sits on one of the largest lots in the area, featuring a main building,

guesthouse, pool, tennis court, putting green, and 2 acres of lush landscaping and mature hedges. Embodying an Italian-style design, the property resembles a villa one might encounter in Italy rather than just a typical home. Renowned architect Richard Landry

curated the gated compound, infusing grand rooms with imported materials and intricate finishes. Notable features include stunning beamed ceilings and rare biblical stone sourced from Jerusalem. The residence boasts a majestic foyer adorned with arches, a solarium, and a chef’s kitchen equipped

with double islands, a sizable pantry, and professional-grade appliances. For more information, go to https://www. realtor.com/news/celebrity-real-estate/ sugar-ray-leonard-cuts-pacific-palisadeshome-price-again/.

of Creed

Sings Sinatra

January 13, 2024 Doors 6pm. Show 8:00pm.

Mark Tremonti, rocker and founding member for Creed, Alter Bridge and Tremonti, takes the Stage at The Saban Theatre for a special, inspiring and heart-warming performance. The lights go down. Familiar horns pipe up from a world-class orchestra as piano twinkles. Then, the voice kicks in. It has all of the smoky splendor those first few notes hinted at, but it ain’t Ol’ Blue Eyes. In a tailored suit with microphone in hand, it’s Mark Tremonti. The GRAMMY® Award-winning multiplatinum musician who shreds his soul out as the guitarist for Alter Bridge and Creed. Moreover, he’s doing it for a reason that’d make the Chairman of the Board proud. Accompanied by surviving members of Sinatra’s band as well as various top-notch players, Tremonti cut 14 classics for Tremonti Sings Sinatra, which he gifted to the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) as part of his new organization Take A Chance For Charity.

The assessment process involves simple tasks such as fielding ground balls in the infield The Pacific Palisades Baseball Association (PPBA) has set evaluation dates for its Spring 2024 program. Assessments for 6-year-olds are scheduled for January 19, while evaluations for other age groups will take place on January 20th and 21st. Parents will receive assigned dates and times for their child’s evaluation in advance of the evaluation weekend. Participation in the PPBA program mandates that all children undergo evaluation before team placement. The assessment process involves simple tasks such as fielding ground balls in the infield, catching fly balls in the outfield, and taking

swings against a pitching machine. While the evaluations are brief, the duration of a child’s evaluation session depends on their starting time and the number of players in line. It’s imperative for players to bring their baseball gloves, bats, wear a baseball hat, comfortable sports attire, and preferably sports cleats for the evaluations. This day provides the PPBA Board of Directors with insights into each player’s baseball skills and background, facilitating equitable team assignments. A note to parents emphasizes the importance of ensuring that children arrive already warmed up, as there will be no available time or space for warm-ups at the park. Additionally, once a child completes their evaluation, parents are encouraged to vacate the park to avoid congestion, given the substantial number of participants expected over the evaluation weekend. For more information, go to https://www.ppba. net/Default.aspx?tabid=1419863.

Federal Investigation Looks Into Anti-Semitic Discrimination at SMC Students Supporting Israel alleges the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war was followed by their denial of registration By Zach Armstrong

A federal investigation is underway as Santa Monica College faces accusations of civil rights infringement from a student organization in support of Israel. CBS reported that the group Students Supporting Israel alleges the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war was followed by discrimination, denial of registration and offensive remarks suffered by the club. Of particular concern is a situation where the Associated Students’ ICC initially failed to register the student organization as an official club. Earlier this month, the Office of Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education notified the school to respond to a complaint concerning the Associated Students’ Inter-

Club Council (ICC) October meeting, SMC confirmed to Mirror Media Group. Students Supporting Israel did not immediately respond to inquiry from Mirror Media Group. A spokesperson for SMC said in an email that the College took “prompt” action on

Oct. 20 and shared steps it took after the Associated Students’ ICC failed to install Students Supporting Israel at SMC (SSISMC) as a club. “The college stands against all forms of hate, including anti-Semitism.” the spokesperson’s email read. “Most recently,

on Nov. 7, 2023 the SMC Board of Trustees passed a resolution in support of United Against Hate week which acknowledged the increases in anti-Semitism amid other ongoing acts of hate and discrimination against marginalized groups throughout the nation.”

Well Marriage Center Aims to Improve Relationships with 2 Los Angeles Locations By Susan Payne A new marriage counseling center in Los Angeles is hoping to change how the therapeutic world handles relationships. Well Marriage Center, a therapist-owned counseling practice located in West Los Angeles and Pasadena, is helping couples build relationship skills, heal relationship trauma, understand their attachment styles and rekindle intimacy and connection they might have thought was too far gone. The Center has locations in seven states and opened its California offices this year. Welcoming all relationships, Well Marriage is a team of licensed, professional therapists offering specialized couples counseling, individual therapy, and relationship wellness programs. “We hope that offering a specialty in relationship support can help couples and families in our local communities. Even though many therapists offer marriage counseling, very few are specialized in it,” said Chet Denlinger, CEO of Well Marriage Center. “We tend to think that healthy relationships and deeper connections with

others can make the world a better place.” Ninety percent of couples who complete therapy with a highly trained couples therapist report an increase in their emotional well-being and have more comfort in their relationship, according to the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. Well Marriage Center has found that not one approach fits all couples, so the therapists are uniquely equipped in the study of relationship therapy approaches to help all couples — married or not. “We work from a strengths-based foundation, which means we’re immediately looking for ways couples already connect well, or used to connect well, and ways that couples have the capacity for support and success,” Denlinger said.

Instead of “tell me about the problem,” the first question a Well Marriage therapist will ask is, “Tell me about how the two of you met and what attracted you to each other initially?” “It’s a subtle shift that many general practitioner therapists haven’t made, but being strengths-based is a foundational pillar we believe in. It allows us to leverage a couple’s strengths from the start, which helps set them up for success and reminds them they’re on the same team,” Denlinger said. Above and beyond therapeutic care, Well Marriage Center counselors cover all bases for couples’ therapy: premarital, marital and dating therapy, individuals wanting a better relationship with themselves, services for couples who have been together for a time,

and non-traditional relationships. Well Marriage Center counselors are skilled in helping couples navigate life changes, heavy conflict, lack of communication, grief, trauma, decreased sexual intimacy, affairs and infidelity and separation or divorce adjustment. “We’re very inclusive in our services and approach for any relationship scenarios that people bring to the table. Our skills transcend traditional notions of ‘marriage counseling’ to encompass any and all relational issues a person may want to work out. We focus on the bonds between people and the relationship people have with themselves. Any person or couple wanting to grow in an emotional or relational context can find a valuable resource in us,” Denlinger added. Generally, the results vary depending on the therapist, but between 70-90% of couples find therapy beneficial. While the practice takes work and dedication, it’s highly effective for most couples. You’ll find at Well Marriage Center, therapists deeply care for your relationships and want them to succeed. “In relationships, sometimes we’re afraid of being vulnerable and don’t even realize it’s because of our childhood. Sometimes we have a hard time hearing our partner through different communication styles. Sometimes it’s hard to forgive and begin again. We want to change that for you,” Denlinger said. The Center offers inperson couples therapy and virtual couples counseling. For more information on Well Marriage Center, or to find a location near you, visit www.wellmarriagecenter.com.
