Homeless Shelter at West LA Armory Clears Major Hurdle Federal government gives county green light to proceed with bridge housing facility

By Sam Catanzaro At the Brentwood Community Council meeting Wednesday night an update was provided on a proposed homeless shelter at the West LA National Guard Armory on Federal Avenue.

On December 20, President Trump signed into law the $738 billion National Defense Authorization Act. In this bill was language that modifies the deed at the West LA Armory to allow a shelter to operate at the property year-round. Currently, a winter shelter is run

out of the armory that does not provide 24 hour service and care. With the creation of a yearround shelter, officials say more individuals will have access to case management services and will not be forced to leave the facilities during the day.

According to Stephanie Cohen of Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl’s office speaking at the January 8 Brentwood Community Council meeting, renderings for the shelter are expected mid-2020.

The effort to build a shelter at the armory was spearheaded by Representative Ted Lieu (CA33) who represents Brentwood. According to Lieu, the County plans to construct a shelter that will provide 24/7 housing with intensive case management services including mental health and physical health services.

“Homelessness is a pressing concern in my district and throughout Southern California,” Lieu said. “The Armory’s newly planned yearround shelter will give more people access to temporary housing and social services.

According to county officials, the shelter –

to be located in the northeast parking lot – will be accessible for homeless individuals in West Los Angeles or surrounding neighborhoods and

will have a low barrier to entry. The program will have a housing-first model. There will be no walk-ins accepted.

Tenant Files Suit Against Owner of Brentwood-Area High-Rise That Caught Fire Barrington Plaza resident takes legal action

By Sam Catanzaro A tenant of a Brentwood-area high-rise that caught fire last week has filed suit alleging that the building’s owner was negligent.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), on January 29 a fire was reported at 8:37 a.m. on the 7th floor of a 25-story residential high-rise complex know as Barrington Plaza located at 11740 Wilshire Boulevard.

Two firefighters sustained injuries battling the fire. According to Scott, they suffered minor burns and were treated and transported to a local hospital.

The LAFD treated 11 civilian patients.

Seven were transported to a local hospital – including a 3-month-old child – while four were treated and released on the scene. One 19-year-old male died from smoke inhalation and burns.

Following the fire, a tenant filed a suit in Los Angeles County Superior Court, alleging that the company that owns the building, Douglas Emmett Inc., was negligent in failing to install sprinklers and perform other fire safety improvements.

“For years, tenants of Barrington Plaza Apartments have pleaded, warned and fought with Douglas Emmett … about a seemingly straightforward issue: Barrington Plaza is unacceptably, illegally and fatally unsafe from fires,” reads the suit brought on behalf of tenant Charles Agozino and asks the court to permit a class action.

Brentwood News contacted Douglas Emmett for comment but the company could not immediately be reached.

According to the LAFD, high rises in the City of Los Angeles are inspected annually.

Barrington Plaza was last inspected in June 2019 and was up to code, says Scott.

The 25-story building had no sprinklers, even though the same building burned almost seven years ago.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

By Sam Catanzaro Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti is suspending farmers markets in Los Angeles due to overcrowding concerns following backlash over an image showing a crowded Brentwood farmers market.

“We have seen images of dangerously crowded farmers markets –– so I’m announcing the temporary suspension of farmers markets pending City review of physical distancing plans needed to keep communities safe. We will review plans immediately so markets can stay open this week,” Garcetti wrote in a tweet Monday.

Over the weekend TMZ captured an image of a crowded Brentwood Farmers Market. The image we viral and provoked pushback, including from Katherine Schwarzenegger, daughter of Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“The farmers market in Brentwood still being open seems like a huge issue when it comes to social gatherings,” Katherine Schwarzenegger

wrote in a tweet.

According to Garcetti, farmers markets will be allowed to open once they submit plans to the city’s Bureau of Street Services that show how they will enforce physical distancing and ensure safe operations.

VA Homeless Shelter Opens 50 beds for homeless veterans

By Sam Catanzaro Bridge housing for homeless veterans opened Saturday at the West Los Angeles Veterans Administration campus with changes in place intended to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

According to Councilmember Mike Bonin who represents Brentwood, the shelter will give “vulnerable, unhoused veterans an opportunity to comply with social distancing and public health protocols.”

The facility, built by the City of Los Angeles and funded by both the city and the county, will begin as a 50-bed shelter for unhoused veterans who are displaying no symptoms of COVID-19, according to Bonin. The shelter was originally designed as a 100-bed transitional shelter, but will temporarily house a smaller number of veterans in order to comply with social distancing guidelines.

“This is a small payment on the debt we owe our veterans, and I am grateful this facility is finally opening its doors and letting unhoused veterans in,” Bonin said.

This is the second “A Bridge Home” shelter opened in Council District 11. In January, a bridge shelter, accommodating 100 adults and 54 youth, opened in Venice.

The news of the opening of the facility was part of a larger plan by the Veterans Administration Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. The VA also announced that 138 beds in building 214 are being made available to veterans who need to isolate or quarantine due to exposure to or risk of COVID-19. The VA is also allowing “safe camping” on the campus for unsheltered veterans in tents. The program, which will allow 25 veterans to participate, will provide showers, restrooms and hot meals, and may expand to accommodate a larger number of veterans.

“I am really pleased to see the local VA opening up the campus this way to those

“Veterans have been clamoring for more access for generations, and I am grateful the current team at VAGLAHS is stepping up and providing it. The addition of Safe

Camping, while the VA builds long-term housing with its Master Plan, is a smart and greatly needed complement to the ‘Safe Parking’ the VA already offers to veterans who live in their cars.”

Elite Brentwood Private School Returns PPP Loan Federal Paycheck Protection Program loan returned by Brentwood School

By Sam Catanzaro An elite private high school in Brentwood with ties to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has returned a federal small business loan after receiving much pushback.

On Monday, we reported that Brentwood School, an elite private high school in Brentwood, received a federal Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan.

After this article was published, the school informed us that they had returned the loan.

“Brentwood School’s decision on April 3rd to apply for the Payroll Protection Program under the CARES Act involved an in-depth evaluation of the school’s financial position in relation to the originally published government guidelines. However, a great deal has changed in the intervening weeks. In that time, the government has published a number

of updates and revisions to the original parameters as it became clear the federal funds initially provided were not enough to staunch the incredible need that exists nationally,” a spokesperson for Brentwood School wrote in a statement. “Throughout the last week, we carefully considered the added clarifications as well as the growing understanding that, unfortunately, not all who qualify will receive PPP funds. Given these factors, the Board has voted unanimously to decline the loan. We have returned the funds so they can be distributed to others who are in greater need of the assistance.”

As reported by the Los Angeles Times, Brentwood School announced in a recent newsletter that it had received a PPP loan. According to the letter, the loan was approved and funded in mid-April. Other elite private schools like Harvard-Westlake have announced that they did not apply for a PPP loan.

According to an IRS filing obtained by the Times, Brentwood School’s endowment was around $17.4 million in 2017. Tuition at Brentwood School ranges from $37,500 – $44,000.

A Brentwood toy shop that has been in businesses for over 50 years is closing its doors permanently but not before a clearance sale.

Star Toys, located at 130 S Barrington Place in Brentwood, was founded in 1968.

Now 52 years later, owner Lenny Lieberman has announced the store will close due to his

retirement.

“It is with great sadness after 52 years in business I have decided to retire. To all my loyal customers over the years I would like to thank you for your business,” Lieberman said.

“Being a part of the Brentwood community and bringing joy to children has been the highlight of each day.”

According to Lieberman, starting June 19 Star Toys will open its doors for a final week.

“During this time we will have a storewide sale starting at 30 percent off! We’d love to see you if for nothing else than to thank you for your support. Please wear your mask and come on by,” Lieberman said, adding that the sale percentage will likely increase.

2 Brentwood Students Win Prestigious Scholarship and Mentoring

By Sam Catanzaro Lena Jones, Hannah Kim of The Archer School named Milken Scholars Two Brentwood high school students have won prestigious scholarships for their respective work in artificial intelligence and ethics.

The Milken Scholars, a joint initiative of the Milken Institute and the Milken Family Foundation, has chosen 11 talented students from greater Los Angeles for its 2020 scholarship program after a rigorous nomination, application and interview process. Open to college-bound high school seniors in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and New York City, Milken Scholars are selected based on academic performance, community service, leadership and their ability to persevere in the face of personal challenges.

Among these 11 students are two students from Brentwood’s The Archer Schol for Girls.

Lena Jones was an ethical compass for her school community. She led discussions about ethical behavior and presided over hearings for violations of the honor code, writing and presenting the council’s recommendations for disposition. The council also created educational scavenger hunts to honor National Coming Out Day and the International Day of the Girl, and gave presentations to students and faculty throughout the year. Lena’s moderate, collaborative approach led to her selection as a delegate to the American Legion Auxiliary California Girls State, a civics training program, where she campaigned for and won election to the Supreme Court.

Lena was one of two students chosen to represent California at ALA Girls Nation, where she was elected Senate Chaplain. She was asked to serve as a Girls Nation junior counselor in 2021.

Lena was selected as a Ron Brown Captain and Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation Senator. She won Archer’s

Wildfire Safety System Expanded to Brentwood-Area Crews begin installing ALERTWildfire cameras at San Vicente Peak, Canyonback Trail

By Sam Catanzaro Infrared cameras are being installed in the mountains above Bentwood to help firefighters and first responders locate fire ignition and help evacuations, among other uses.

On Monday, crews began installing ALERTWildfire cameras at San Vicente Peak, and will be adding cameras at the Westridge Trail and the Canyonback Trail as well, according to Councilmember Mike Bonin.

The cameras will provide high definition, near-infrared views to firefighters, first responders and the general public.

After graduation, Lena wrote a proposal which finalized the incorporation of “The Autobiography of Malcolm X” in future Archer curricula. She plays the cello and received the Herb Alpert Emerging Young Artist Award in 2018 for creative writing.

Lena ran middle distance on Archer’s track and field team, taking silver in the Louis Zamperini Invitational and leading the team to the top of the Liberty League. She has provided emotional support to patients as a volunteer at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, shadowed prosecutors in the Major Crimes division of the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office, led activities for children as a counselor at the South Seas House summer camp, and distributed clothing and canned goods to homeless veterans at the Veteran Stand Down event.

Hannah Kim believes artificial intelligence (AI) holds the key to our planet’s future.

As an intern at the University of Southern California Bridge Institute, Hannah helped create detailed 3-D model of the pancreatic beta cell, key to understanding diabetes and creating targeted drug therapies; her team’s work was published in Cell, a Cell Press scientific journal. For her honors research project at The Archer School for Girls, Hannah developed a convolutional neural network that analyzes Doppler-shifted sound waves to let hearing-impaired drivers distinguish emergency vehicle sounds from background noises. app and windshield-projected display won an honorable mention from National Center for Women and Information Technology and an Archer RISE Award in engineering and technology. Hannah researched biodegradable manufacturing and recycling as an intern at Los Angeles Sanitation & Environment, presenting her conclusions to members of the Los Angeles City Council at City Hall.

Hannah is an AP Scholar, National Merit Commended Scholar and Coca-Cola Scholar. She earned the gold Presidential Volunteer Service Award for four years straight. A founding member of the Los Angeles Student Activism Coalition, Hannah organized a rally in Santa Monica on the anniversary of the Columbine school shooting that drew 2,000 participants and earned commendation from California State Senator Ben Allen. She is a varsity swimmer and serves on Archer’s Community Service Leadership Board, which organized an Adopt-a-Family program that supported 500 families from Skid Row with toiletries, clothing and toys. An accomplished cellist, Hannah has won multiple awards and competitions, attended California’s AllState festivals, and soloed at the Colburn School’s Zipper Hall. She performs with a chamber orchestra at homeless shelters and orphanages, and her work preparing younger

students for youth orchestra auditions with Love-In-Music earned her recognition from Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and the Los Angeles City Council.

“Being named a Milken Scholar is a true honor. The mentorship and support network that this program offers is unparalleled. I’ve already made connections with my fellow scholars and advisors, and I look forward to developing profound friendships so that we can collectively make positive change in the world as future global leaders,” Hannah said.

To pass on her love of science, Hannah founded Mobile Science Camp (MSC), whose 28 student instructors have brought science lessons and hands-on experiments to more than 650 students through 16 mini-science camps. Hannah’s work with MSC has been recognized by U.S. Representative Ted Lieu and the Brentwood Community Council. The next step: taking MSC international. The group is sending classroom kits and pre-recorded introductory lessons to Nobel Peace Laureate Malala Yousafzai’s school for Syrian refugee girls in Lebanon.

Hannah will study computer science at Stanford in preparation for a career in scientific research.

As a house of culture and ideas, The Book Jewel prioritizes and promotes diversity and inclusion through its expansive politics, African American studies, LGBQT+ and feminist literature collections. Their children’s section also reflects local authors, communities of color and the diversity of the store as a whole.
