Tragic Traffic Accident of the 405 Freeway Claims a Life in the Early Morning Hours

Accident Victim Has Been Identified, Southbound Lanes of 405 Were Shutdown

In the early morning hours of September 21, a deadly accident took place on the 405 Freeway in Brentwood. One vehicle collided with the rear of a semi-truck trailer being towed by a big rig at approximately 4:45 a.m. near Skirball Drive, according to

the Los Angeles Fire Department. Regrettably, the individual involved in the collision could not be revived by medical personnel. In light of the fatality, all southbound lanes of the 405 freeway were temporarily closed. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has identified the victim in the crash as Jarrett Townsend, a 42 male from Chatsworth. The crash is under investigation, according to KCAL 9. Traffic was snarled for two hours after the accident, and the 405 freeway did not reopen until approximately 6:15 a.m. The northbound lanes of the 405 also backed up, and drivers did take the opportunity to get off the freeway to drive on Sepulveda Boulevard.

The traffic jam extended all the way back to the 118 Freeway, which is the northernmost freeway in the San Fernando Valley.

Swift Response: Firefighters Quickly Control Blaze Near Brentwood

Firefighters

Worked in Challenging Terrain, No Structures

Harmed

Firefighters successfully battled a blaze in the vicinity of 4020 N Mandeville Canyon Rd on September 8, according to a report on the Los Angeles Fire Department’s website. Fire crews established a crucial anchor point—

marking the furthest point the fire could advance—and encircled the blaze with hose lines, even in challenging, steep terrain. Firestation 19, Battalion 9 was responsible for fighting this blaze.

Simultaneously, fire helicopters executed precise water drops to douse the fire’s leading edge.

The coordinated efforts of 36 firefighters culminated in the successful extinguishment of the flames, which had engulfed medium-to-heavy brush.

Importantly, no structures were endangered during this operation. This remarkable response occurred in just 61 minutes, highlighting the dedication and professionalism of the firefighting team.

After the recent tropical storm and wet weather, much more so than normal for late summer, thankfully, fires have not been as frequently seen in the hills and brush areas of Los Angeles this year.

Battle Over Marilyn Monroe’s Historic Last Home: Demolition Plans Stalled

CD 11 Councilmember Traci Park Steps In To Halt the Demolition

The Los Angeles City Council has temporarily suspended plans to demolish the home in the Los Angeles area, which was the final home of film icon and actress Marilyn Monroe. This pause comes in response to a last-minute motion introduced with the aim of designating the house as a Historic-Cultural Monument.

Park stated via an emailed statement, “On Friday, we successfully introduced and unanimously approved a motion directing the Planning Department to initiate consideration of the property as a Historic-Cultural Monument and halt the potential demolition of this important asset pending further review by the Office of Historic Resources, the Cultural Heritage Commission, and the full City Council.

For people all over the City and the entire world, Marilyn Monroe was more than just a movie icon. She overcame great adversity in her childhood and battled for fair compensation, often paid far less than her male counterparts and far less than she was actually worth. Because she died far too young, we are all left to imagine what glass ceilings she might have shattered if she’d only had a little more time.”

The bungalow that once belonged to Marilyn Monroe is located in Brentwood and was recently sold to a new owner. This latest owner applied for and was granted a demolition permit for the residence from the City. Once this fact became known, Park, who is the City Councilmember in CD 11, which includes Brentwood, decided to do everything she could to halt the demolition.

During a press conference on Friday, Traci Park stated, “Regrettably, the Department of Building and Safety issued a demolition permit before my team and I could fully engage and resolve this issue,” Once word got out, Park’s office was flooded with calls from around the world pleading that the bungalow be saved.

“At this juncture, it may be in the thousands,” Park commented on the volume of phone calls. “All of our phones in City Hall and the field office have been ringing off the hook for the last 48 hours.”

On Friday, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved Park’s emergency motion to initiate the process of designating the house as a historic building. For now, the demolition plans are on hold, pending a comprehensive study and analysis of the home by the city’s Office of Historic Resources, as stated by Park.

The identity of the owners is not yet known, and the property was purchased through a limited liability company (LLC), which shields their identity. “We have not received any communication from the property owner,” Park informed CNN. “It’s highly likely that they were aware of the previous ownership of the home and its historical significance.”

The property is located at 12305 5th Helena Drive in the Brentwood district and was built in 1929. It is valued at roughly $8 million and was only Monroe’s home for a short period of time before her death.

Federal Judge Sets Stage for Potential Trial in Lawsuit Challenging Land Leases on West L.A. VA Campus

Judge Denies Motions to Dismiss Key Portions of Class-Action Suit

A federal judge has indicated that there is the potential for a trial next year in a lawsuit challenging land leases on West Los Angeles’ Veterans Affairs (VA) campus, including leases to UCLA and a private school, according to the Los Angeles Times. The lawsuit addresses what veterans believe is the slow progress of the VA’s commitment to constructing housing for homeless veterans.

U.S. District Judge David O. Carter, in a tentative ruling that the judge has stated is subject to change, has rejected motions seeking to dismiss critical aspects of the class-action lawsuit. The lawsuit’s primary objectives are to declare the leases as illegal and to compel

the VA to accelerate the provision of housing for the thousands of homeless veterans in need.

Judge Carter delivered the pre-written tentative ruling following an extensive 3½-hour hearing on September 18. He acknowledged that arguments presented by lawyers representing both veterans and the VA had led

him to “rethink the entire jurisprudence.”

The key point in the ruling was that the judge believed the VA’s responsibility to “evaluate the management of leases or land use to ensure that they advance the purpose of providing housing and services that principally benefit veterans and their families.”

While the judge did not reveal his leaning on the matter, he has granted the involved parties until September 29 to provide responses to the tentative ruling before he reaches a final decision. He also stated that, as quoted by The Los Angeles Times, “I’m not signing off with anything that doesn’t have accountability.”

New Traffic Light Enhances Safety at Brentwood Intersection

2023-24 Brentwood School Varsity Girls Tennis Team Scores Big Victory and Joins Instagram

Traffic Will Be Slowed to Serve The Community’s Well-being

City Council member Traci Park announced via her Instagram page on September 20 that a new stoplight would be debuting in the heart of Brentwood. On Thursday, September 21, the Department of Transportation activated this essential addition to the Brentwood neighborhood’s traffic infrastructure. Park’s post said, “The newly installed traffic

light, positioned at the intersection of South Barrington Ave and Chenault St., serves as a paramount enhancement to the community’s traffic safety measures.

This strategically placed traffic signal aims to mitigate potential hazards by regulating the flow of vehicles in an area that hosts numerous apartment and condominium buildings, the bustling San Vicente Blvd commercial district, and the popular Barrington Recreation Center.”

The implementation of this traffic light underscores the Department of Transportation’s and the City Council member’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of local residents and commuters navigating this busy junction.

Coyote Safety Tips to Protect Your Family and Pets Amid Rising

Number of Sightings

Traci Park’s Office Shares Essential Guidelines for Dealing with Coyote Encounters

Coyote sightings have been on the rise in our neighborhoods, prompting proactive measures from the office of City Councilwoman Traci Park. A recent Coyote Safety Briefing was hosted to address residents’ concerns and provide valuable insights on safeguarding your family and pets from potential encounters with these wild creatures. Here are some key takeaways from the briefing:

1. Feeding Pets Indoors or Supervising Outdoor Meals: It is essential to feed your pets indoors whenever possible, or if they dine outdoors, ensure you supervise their

meals and remove any uneaten food promptly. Importantly, avoid feeding wild animals,

as it is against the law to feed predatory wildlife within the City of Los Angeles.

2. Secure Your Pets at Night: It is advisable to keep them indoors. To protect your pets from coyotes during the night, use a covered enclosure if indoor confinement is not an option. Ensure the enclosure is constructed with sturdy, heavy wire, as coyotes can break through flimsy materials like chicken wire.

3. Short Leashes for Dog Walks: While walking your dog, keep them on a short leash, ideally measuring six feet or less. Additionally, consider carrying an air horn or a “coyote shaker,” such as a can filled with rocks that can be used to create noise and potentially scare off a coyote.

4. Reacting to Coyote Encounters: If a coyote approaches you or your pet, acting assertively is crucial. Wave your arms, shout loudly in a low tone, and use any noise-making device you have at your disposal, such as an air horn or coyote shaker. Make yourself appear as large as possible to intimidate the coyote, but avoid turning your back on it.

5. Stay Informed: For a comprehensive guide on dealing with coyotes and additional tips, visit the following link: Coyote Safety Tips.

In light of the recent surge in coyote sightings, Councilwoman Traci Park’s office encourages residents to stay vigilant and follow these guidelines to minimize the potential for encounters with these wild animals. Remember, knowledge and preparedness are vital to ensuring the safety of your loved ones and pets in our communities.

Greetings From Italy

Brentwood.

My wife and a bunch of her friends turned 70 this year, and they celebrated by renting a villa in Tuscany together. I got invited. It’s rather amazing.

Before renting a car to drive to the villa on a hillside above Lucca, we spent a few days in Florence. I had been there once during college, but I don’t remember much, so it was great to see it with fresh eyes. As is often said, youth is wasted on the young!

We saw the Statue of David and lots of paintings, and we walked through many churches. We climbed to the top of the Duomo, which caused a bit of huffing and puffing.

But what really struck me about Florence was the outdoor life.

Everyone – resident and tourist alike –walks. There are some taxis and cars and lots of little motorscooters, but people here walk miles every day. There’s something very healthy about that.

Because of COVID, we started seeing al fresco dining in Los Angeles. Pre-COVID, this was considered a no-no by many on the Brentwood Community Council. I think the idea of outdoor dining is fun, something to be embraced -- forever. We need MORE outdoor dining and drinking establishments in

Italian cities have lots of squares. In the middle is a big open area. All around are restaurants, coffee shops, wine bars, etc. People sit down and talk or engage in peoplewatching for hours; children play in the square. Everybody is friendly with everybody else. Few seem to be in a hurry.

Brentwood should be thinking: Is there an outdoor area where WE could create a central gathering place?

This was proposed once for a retail spot that was going to be built at the northwest corner of Barrington and San Vicente. The developer who proposed this, Brian Gordon, wanted to close that tiny strip of Gorham behind Starbucks in order to make this happen.

His proposed structure was going to take up Starbucks, that strip of Gorham, and the buildings on the north side of Gorham to the east of Whole Foods. Opponents successfully shot this proposal down, but I think an opportunity was missed. It doesn’t get much more central than Barrington and San Vicente.

The building at the northwest corner of San Vicente and Montana – where Souplantation used to be – is undergoing a big upgrade. I looked at some sketches of what is to come, and I saw hints of an outdoor gathering place. It might not be huge like an Italian square, but there is plenty of parking below that building. Parking is always an issue in Brentwood.

And then there is the Munger property, where the proposed Green Hollow Square was going to go (and where Duttons Bookstore used to be). That got blocked by opponents, too, and the building – called the Barry Building – is slowly but surely rotting away.

A permit has been requested to knock the

place down. It’s time. The building is an eyesore, an embarrassment. Brentwood can do better. It’s time for something new.

I hope that something new will include a big open area where local residents can gather, stroll, enjoy food, drink, and listen to music. There is plenty of room below for an underground parking lot. An open-air area could be surrounded by some kind of structure.

I have written several times over the years that a retirement home would go well there. Brentwood doesn’t have such a thing, and oldsters don’t drive much, so the traffic concern is removed. I’d also like to see a big public swimming pool included.

I don’t think we need more stores; we all have plenty of stuff, and Amazon has obliterated much of the retail opportunity that once existed.

I received a flier at home about supporting the idea of knocking the building down. Then, a door-knocker came to our place to ask me to sign a petition in favor of the proposed demolition.

While I think it’s time to move on, I find it

troubling that whoever is circulating the fliers and hiring the doorknockers is doing it in an anonymous way.

I sent an email to the email address on the flier and got no response. The door-knocker couldn’t tell me who hired him –he said he didn’t know -- but promised to pass my message along to his supervisor.

I asked that someone get in touch with me so I could tell Brentwood what was going on. Again, no response. Lack of transparency only raises suspicions. Whoever is behind this effort should make themselves known.

If you like the idea of an outdoor gathering place – or a retirement home – or a public swimming pool, send an email to the email address on the flier, letsprotectbrentwood@ gmail.com, and consider including a link to this article. Or, if you have an idea of your own, send it with a copy to me: jeffhall@ mirrormediagroupla.com.

Exclusive: One of the West Coast’s Most Celebrated Ice Cream Shops To Open in Brentwood

Long in the Works Location of California Favorite To Open on San Vincente This Winter By Dolores Quintana

It’s been six long years since Kim Malek first started looking for just the right storefront for Salt & Straw’s Brentwood location, but the time has finally come, and the long-awaited ice cream shop is on the way, hopefully in December. Los Angeles’ newest Salt & Straw shop will be located at 11640 San Vicente Boulevard, and fans of the beloved ice cream makers’ divine desserts will be excited to learn what the new shop has in store for Brentwood.

Despite the fact that Salt & Straw is originally from Portland, Oregon, their ice cream has really become a part of life in Los Angeles. Their thoughtful and delicious curation of

flavors that use local ingredients and produce and their imaginative collaborations with other Los Angeles restaurants and creators of fine foods make them stand out. I spoke with cofounder Kim Malek about the road to opening the shop in Brentwood and what their plans for Salt & Straw Brentwood are.

Kim Malek: We’re based in Portland. But we opened our fourth ever store in Los Angeles. So it’s sort of like a second home to us. We’re hoping to be ready to open in early December.

Dolores Quintana: So you might be open for the holidays, nice.

Kim Malek: That’s our goal. We’re feeling hopeful.

DQ: Can you reveal a location yet?

Kim Malek: Yes, 11640 San Vicente Boulevard. I have been looking for six years. Looking for just the right spot [in Brentwood.] You can go to many different areas. We wanted to be really thoughtful of where we ended up, and it just feels like this shop is surrounded by a lot of fantastic restaurants. So, it’s an honor to be part of that community.

DQ: Which is great, and it’s very interesting that it took you that long and you gave so much consideration to what area of Brentwood you wanted to go into. Because that’s so important.

Kim Malek: It is. We wanted to make it

make sense. We find that folks like to go out to eat and shop and walk [in certain areas], so we wanted to be really thoughtful in terms of where we ended up.

DQ: Could you tell me a little bit about the history of your company? What have you done, and why you do it?

Kim Malek: I started Salt & Straw in 2011 with my cousin, Tyler. He and I still run the company today. I had a dream to open an ice cream shop since the mid-90s, believe it or not. The inspiration for me was always about creating community gathering places where people could run into their neighbors and spend time with friends and family. Tyler joined me. He is behind all of our flavors, and he quickly came to realize how our ice cream can reflect that idea of community, too.

When we opened in Los Angeles, instead of just importing flavors from Portland, we worked really closely with the local chef and artisan community to create flavors that respected that community. So whether it’s Sidecar Doughnuts or Compartés Chocolate, the list goes on and on, with local farmers with olives and avocados with all the different flavors that you would find in Southern California. It’s just so fun to get to know those folks, that local community, and have the flavors be reflective of that, and it adds to the whole level of creativity. That’s always been our inspiration and what we’re about. You don’t find Salt & Straw in grocery stores or things like that. We are focused on that community aspect and our shop.

DQ: I think the first time I ever had a savory

ice cream, I believe it was the Salt & Straw olive ice cream.

Kim Malek: Yes. It’s a candied olive, and I remember we were actually at the Santa Monica Farmers Market. and obviously the olives in Southern California. We were kind of freaking out. We were asking ourselves what could you do with this, and so we candied them.

DQ: It was great. Obviously, when I say savory, you made it with a candied olive, but it was just so different that I think it blew people’s minds. It kind of blew my mind when I tasted it; I thought, wait, they have ice cream with olives? Then, of course, that’s the one I bought, and it was fantastic. You really kind of stepped out of the idea of what ice cream is supposed to be. That idea that it’s supposed to be sweet and fruity and or chocolate or vanilla only.

Kim Malek: I’m so glad you said that. That is so much what we tried to do. We change our menu every single month. Tyler and I are always stepping back and saying, what’s going on this month that is either seasonal in nature or somehow salient to the season? How can we use ice cream to highlight those different months in creative ways to give people something to think about, talk about, and engage with each other? It’s been a really fun journey, and I think one of the most exciting things about the company.

Magical Marionette Show Delights Enthusiastic Crowd in Westwood

Amazing Puppetry Spectacle Shatters Record at Westwood Library

The Westwood Branch Library witnessed a remarkable milestone as it welcomed a recordbreaking audience of approximately 220 children, parents, and community members for an enchanting live puppet show from the Bob Baker Marionette Theater on September 10. This event marked the largest turnout for a single program in the 18-year history of the Westwood Branch Library.

The success of this event was made possible by the dedication and support of numerous individuals and organizations. Special thanks were extended to the Westwood Branch Manager and Senior Librarian, Dr. Jennifer Noble, as well as the Westwood Branch staff and LAPL’s Lauren Skinner for arranging event documentation. City Librarian John

Szabo played a pivotal role by deploying LAPL Central Library’s PR resources in support of the event.

Additionally, the Friends Board members, volunteers, and community supporters all contributed their time and efforts to ensure the event’s success, from setup to cleanup and publicity. The generous donations from Diddy Riese Cookies and Ralphs Fresh Fare further enhanced the event’s success. We reported on the event on September 8.

Ultimately, the entire team at the Bob Baker Marionette Theater, including Co-Executive Director/Head Puppeteer Alex Evans, Director of Operations Caleb Codding, Office Manager Jules O’Malley, and the extraordinary puppeteers Ginger Duncan and Molly Fite, played an integral role in creating a magical experience for the enthusiastic audience.

In summary, it took a collective effort to make this event the largest and bestattended program in the 18-year history of the Westwood Branch Public Library. Looking ahead, plans are already in motion to bring back the renowned Bob Baker Marionette Theater for its fourth encore appearance at the Westwood Branch Library in May 2025, celebrating the library’s 20th Anniversary. Stay tuned for more enchanting performances!
