Of Hearts and Flowers: The St. Cecilia Society
Founded in 1892, the St. Cecilia Society’s mission was to underwrite the cost of medical care for needy patients. Although the organization was named for the patron saint of music, in reference to its annual fundraising concerts, for decades it was the February fundraiser, typically held on or about Valentine’s Day, that was known as the social event of the season. The Society, which was also known as the St. Cecilia Club, funded rooms at Cottage and St. Francis hospitals, and at times, medical tents located at Oak Park, primarily for patients with tuberculosis. (The tents were fumigated between uses.)
In 1902, a local reporter described the experience of attending the annual event: “On entering the door one would be held up by a winsome maiden who insists that he must have a bouquet. ‘No’ is a word that is unknown at these affairs, and the unfortunate must submit. He then hands the maiden a dollar and gets back little change with the thank you and the sweet smile that goes a long way. He has a vague feeling that he is considerably overcharged but feels that he could deed away his house and home for another such smile; but he hasn’t much time for reflection, for another sweet-faced peasant is at his elbow, and he must buy something else and so it goes on.”
The annual soiree was a most-anticipated social occasion, well-attended and supported by the community. The day-long event that stretched long into night offered an array of activities, tempting displays of food and household items, and numerous specialty items for purchase.
Children enjoyed the booths featuring candy, cake, and ice cream, and they were invited to participate in arts and crafts activities during the day. Adults dined on tempting “Spanish delicacies” such as tamales, and selected from lavish delicatessen booths’ fruit and vegetable displays. Entertainment included dance exhibitions and vaudeville shows. Beginning at nine o’clock, guests were invited to “trip the light fantastic” to the music performed by local orchestras.
Attendees could sit for silhouettes, have their fortunes told and their palms read, and surreptitiously purchase sentimental valentines to be delivered on the spot. All sorts of items were for sale at high-priced booths. Shoppers could choose among the flower booths, secondhand books, art-
work, silk and linen embroidered items, hats, neckties, and items for babies. In 1913, a featured attraction was the candle booth stocked with special bayberry candles from Narragansett bayberries grown on Tower Hill, Rhode Island.
Members made no apologies for the high prices since the proceeds went to such a good cause. In what was described by the Morning Press as “the annual demonstration of the free giving propensities of the people of Santa Barbara,” the fundraising efforts were successful. In 1898, the total receipts were $576.65; in 1900, $797.87; in 1904, $1,600; and in 1913, the event netted $2,795.
The servers all women represented prominent families, including Spaulding, Dibblee, De la Guerra, De Forest, and Fithian. For years, they dressed in exotic and colorful costumes from various countries, including Egypt, Japan, and Germany.
However, in 1904, organizers decided to make a change and instead dressed the attendants in what they referred to as “severe simplicity,” the blue cotton gowns and white caps and aprons typically worn by nurses. As explained in the Morning Press, “This practice has been found absolutely necessary to ensure the financial success of a St. Cecilia tea, on account of the distracting effect bedecked beauty is apt to have upon prospective purchasers: the objects of the society and the function are likely to have lost sight of by men rapt in mute admiration.”
That was the year that Nina Dempsey Chase, a dedicated fundraiser for Cottage Hospital, prevailed upon her daughter, Pearl, to volunteer at the ice cream table. Pearl and her friends, seniors at Santa Barbara High School at
the time, donned the Red Cross nurses’ uniforms as they served the sweet treats. “It would be hard to imagine a more appropriate and becoming costume, and all looked well in it,” reported the Morning Press
The event was typically held at the elegant Arlington Hotel, but after the hotel burned down in 1909, was relocated to the lower Hawley building. After the hotel was rebuilt in 1911, the event returned to its old home.
In 1919, the 29th annual event was canceled due to the influenza pandemic. As announced in the Morning Press, “In Santa Barbara, as there will be no bazaar conducted by the St. Cecilia, the office of which club is to care for the needy who are ill, supplying them with physicians, and hospital accommodation, if necessary. The recent epidemic of influenza is responsible for the omission of the bazaar, the receipts of which in former years have always amounted to several thousand dollars, which funds have gone a long way toward meeting the needs supplied by the St. Cecilia.” Instead, members of the society staffed a booth set up on State Street in front of Diehl’s Store, where they sold flower bouquets, vegetable plants, and pencils and placed a tin cup prominently to solicit donations.
By 1921, the event was held every two years, and after the earthquake in 1925, the St. Cecilia Society briefly disbanded and ended the legendary annual Valentine’s Day fundraiser and continued its good work through a couple of name changes. Today it is known as the Cecilia Fund, continuing its all-volunteer mission to assist the community with vitally important healthcare needs dating back to the 19th century.

REAL ESTATE SCOOP
KELLOW CONSTRUCTION WINS SBCA AWARD FOR TORO CANYON HOME
Kellow Construction was recently awarded the Residential Remodel Award (Up to $750K) from the Santa Barbara Contractors Association for a fire-resistant home project in Toro Canyon
Emily Kellow of Kellow Construction shared that "This recognition means so much to us, especially given
the level of competition. The event was a celebration of craftsmanship, innovation, and commitment to excellence, and we are deeply honored to be among this year’s winners."
Kellow explained that the award-winning house was completed before the devastating LA fires, yet fire resilience was at the heart of its design. “We wanted to push beyond aesthetics and truly prioritize the longevity and safety of this home,” she said. The judging panel evaluated entries based on craftsmanship, creative problem-solving, inspiration, and environmental sensitivity.
This elegant, fire-resistant residence located in Toro Canyon blends seamlessly into its natural surroundings while standing ready for the realities of California’s fire-prone landscape.
Kellow further detailed that this project “represents the shift we believe is critical in today’s building industry: integrating fire-resistant, sustainable materials to protect both homeowners and the environment. Extraordinary Benefits to a Structured Routine
by Sara Caputo
In the modern workplace, productivity is often viewed as a measure of how much we accomplish in a given timeframe. But behind every highly productive individual or team is usually one key factor: a well-structured routine. While spontaneity and flexibility have their place, routines create a foundation for efficiency, focus, and long-term success. I talk about this all the time when I’m speaking to, training, and coaching employees, leaders, and managers. This is more important now than ever!
THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT
Routines are not just about habit formation they are deeply tied to cognitive function and efficiency. Our brains are designed to conserve energy, and when we follow a routine, we reduce decision fatigue. Decision-making is one of the most mentally exhausting activities, and when we streamline daily tasks through routines, we free up mental resources for more complex and creative work. When we create automaticity and preserve our cognitive budgets, we free up and create more space for our higher-level thinking and creative tasks.
HOW ROUTINES IMPROVE WORKPLACE PRODUCTIVITY
• Reduces Decision Fatigue: When employees have a set routine, they spend less time figuring out what to do next and more time executing tasks efficiently. Steve Jobs famously wore the same outfit almost every day a black turtleneck, blue jeans, and New Balance sneakers because he wanted to minimize decision fatigue by eliminating the need to choose clothes each morning, allowing him to focus his energy on more important matters related to his work at Apple.
• Creates Predictability and Stability: A consistent work routine minimizes distractions, fosters a sense of control, and enables smoother transitions between tasks. This predictability also helps teams collaborate more effectively.
• Enhances Focus and Efficiency: By allocating specific time blocks for deep work, meetings, and breaks, routines ensure that high-priority tasks get the attention they deserve without constant interruptions.
• Encourages Healthy Work Habits: A structured workday with designated start and stop times prevents overwork and burnout. Employees who stick to a routine that includes breaks and time for relaxation are more likely to sustain high levels of productivity. “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems” is a quote from Atomic Habits by James Clear.
• Strengthens Discipline and Motivation: Many people believe that motivation drives action, but in reality, action fuels motivation. Having a structured routine ensures that tasks are completed even on days when motivation is lacking, ultimately reinforcing discipline.
BUILDING A ROUTINE THAT WORKS
Establishing an effective routine requires intention and consistency. Here are a few steps to create a routine that boosts workplace productivity.
• Start with a Morning Routine: How you begin your day sets the tone for everything that follows. A strong morning routine, whether it includes exercise, reading, or planning the day, can greatly impact productivity. This is one of the times during the day that is more in our control. It might mean we need to wake up a few minutes earlier, but doing so can help us manage the upcoming chaos.
• Time-Block Your Schedule: Allocate specific time slots for deep work, meetings, and administrative tasks to prevent distractions and ensure focused work sessions.
• Prioritize Key Tasks: Identify the most critical tasks of the day and schedule them during peak energy hours.
• Incorporate Breaks: Short breaks between work sessions improve focus and prevent mental fatigue. Cal Newport said in his book Deep Work that this kind of work “requires you to focus intensely on a demanding task. But few can maintain peak cognitive intensity for more than an hour or so without some sort of relief.”
• Stick to an End-of-Day Routine: A closing routine that includes reviewing accomplishments and planning for the next day helps transition out of work mode. This p.m. bookend is even more important than the a.m. one. A good day starts with the night before. Make sure that you shut down completely and give yourself a bit of a digital detox before you go to sleep.
Routines are the backbone of workplace productivity. By reducing decision fatigue, increasing focus, and fostering discipline, they create an environment where efficiency thrives. While spontaneity has its moments, those who leverage the power of structured routines will consistently outperform their peers in both productivity and well-being.

Q&A: Jessica Risko Smith, Interior Designer
After studying design and business at Auburn University in Alabama, Jessica Risko Smith started her career at a global commercial firm in Los Angeles, focusing, she says, on “design as a tool” to enhance business, productivity, and workplace satisfaction. In 2004, she landed in Santa Barbara and launched her own company as a small side hustle; since 2006, Jessica Risko Smith Interior Design has been her full-time professional focus.
“My dad was always drawing and paint-
ing with me when I was young, and I think he is a very creative person,” she reflects. “And my daughter is now a freshman at SCAD [Savannah College of Art and Design], clearly following a creative path, while my son is very engineering-minded, which aligns beautifully with creativity.”
Besides making art alongside your dad, what drew you to design early on? Early on, I found a lot of comfort in rearranging my own bedroom and always took note of how spaces were organized, and I loved to draw and paint through junior high. When I decided not to pursue my pre-med program in college, I sifted through the course catalog and was immediately inspired by the design and architecture classes. Since enrolling in design, I’ve never looked back.
What has been your favorite field trip or vacation that inspired your work? My first trip to Europe was incredibly inspiring. I was exposed to so many different styles of architecture and design in one place. Berlin and Florence in particular stood out because of the modern and ancient architecture in each city.

What is your favorite public place in Santa Barbara? Without a doubt, it would be the courthouse. Especially the tower. The views of the entire city from the balcony there are breathtaking.

What do you like about your job? I love solving problems and using creativity to improve people’s daily lives. Enhancing how people interact in their homes and environments is incredibly rewarding. Plus, I enjoy the dynamic relationships I have with my clients. They’re always interesting and unique.

Have you ever created a space with the family dog (or dogs) in mind? If our clients have dogs, every space needs to consider them. It’s no different from designing with kids in mind. Spaces need to be durable, cleanable, and functional for the family’s lifestyle. For example, we once created a mudroom/laundry room combo that included an interior dog wash shower. It was per-
CALIFORNIA’S INSURANCE CRISIS: WHAT SANTA BARBARA HOMEOWNERS NEED TO KNOW
BY KATHLEEN ROGERS
Santa Barbara area homeowners are facing a growing insurance crisis as many lose their long-standing coverage, face skyrocketing premiums, or both. This issue is impacting traditionally highrisk and low-risk zones, forcing residents to scramble for solutions. Home insurance coverage is also a home purchase requirement if working with a mortgage lender.
Last week's Insurance Town Hall with Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara, hosted by Senator Monique Limón and Assemblymember Gregg Hart, with local experts from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, Fire Safe Council, CA FAIR Plan and CA Association of Realtors, shed light on current challenges and potential solutions.
The town hall focused on California’s insurance market and ongoing efforts to bring private insurers back into the state and assist individuals with improving the fire preparedness of their homes. California’s insurance market is the fourth-largest in the world, and experts emphasized that for long term stability, insurers must begin competing for customers. Commissioner Lara discussed several proposals to
stabilize the market, including advanced catastrophe modeling and new legislation to support homeowners.
A key topic was the California FAIR Plan, the nonprofit administered by the Insurance Commissioner that has become a lifeline for homeowners facing policy cancellations. Originally created in the 1960s, the FAIR Plan “pool” provides an option for homeowners unable to find coverage elsewhere, but it was meant to be the insurer of last resort. As more turn to the FAIR Plan, this shift has meant a financial strain on the system.
High-value homes face additional challenges in the current insurance climate. Rising inflation, construction costs and the frequency of disasters make it difficult to fully fireinsure properties above the FAIR Plan residential limit of $3 million.
Changes are expected in the coming year, particularly in response to escalating wildfire costs. New regulations took effect December 2024 requiring insurers to cover at least 85% of properties in a given area. In exchange, to bring insurers back into the market, insurance companies will be allowed to create and rely on risk modeling to request approval for new rates. Experts admit that homeowners should expect premium increases to match where they live as a result.
Commissioner Lara emphasized that availability of coverage must come first in order to make insurance more affordable, citing the increasing frequency of disasters like wildfires as a primary factor. Since 2019, California has experienced 115 catastrophic wildfires, including the January 2025 Los
fect for muddy paws and kids with sticky fingers after a day at school!
What is your current state of mind? Motivated and invigorated.
What is your greatest fear? Being colorblind that would be a real challenge in my profession!
What skill would you like to have? Any level of skill in ball sports would be great! I envy my friends who excel at tennis, pickleball, and volleyball.
What word or phrase do you most overuse? “Amazing.” I’m currently working on replacing that one!
Who are your heroes in real life? Definitely firefighters, nurses, and doctors all the helpers in the world.
What do you consider your greatest achievement? Aside from my two children, I’d say building a thriving business has been my greatest achievement.
Angeles wildfires, which are now the most expensive fire in U.S. history. Santa Barbara County Fire Officials at the Town Hall said they do an extensive amount to be fire safe and receive 10% of all the available grants in the state for their important work.

INSIGHT INTO SANTA BARBARA’S COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE MARKET: AN INTERVIEW WITH GENE DEERING
The commercial real estate market in Santa Barbara has been a hot topic of discussion, especially as we move into 2025. At our recent Santa Barbara Association of REALTORS® Real Estate Forecast, Gene Deering, a partner at Radius Commercial Real Estate, shared valuable insights into the current landscape of commercial real estate on the South Coast. I had the opportunity to ask Gene to dive deeper into the trends, challenges, and opportunities shaping our market today.
How would you describe the current state of the commercial real estate market in Santa Barbara?
"The commercial market on the South Coast is a bit disjointed," Deering explains. "The retail market, with the exception of Downtown/State Street, is actually very strong. Lease rates have been rising, especially in neighborhood centers. The retail market in Montecito is as hot as I have ever seen. On the other hand, office leasing is very slow, particularly for larger tech office spaces. Industrial remains incredibly strong for both leasing and sales."
Are you seeing more investor interest in certain types of commercial properties over others?
"In general, there are fewer investor transactions than in previous years. Most of the buyers in the market today are either users or buyers with a value-add or use-conversion strategy. In 2024, we saw very few pure investment buyers. As I highlighted in my speech, a number of investment properties were on the market last year but never sold—even though many of them were reasonably priced."
What are the biggest challenges facing commercial property owners and investors right now?
"The cost of money. Investors are earning 5% in their money market accounts with zero risk, so it is difficult for them to justify buying real estate at a 5% return, especially when borrowing costs exceed 6%. Much of our sales market has been driven by 1031 exchanges, and once the market slowed down, many of those buyers disappeared."
Are there any new commercial or multifamily developments in the pipeline that you’re particularly excited about?
"We need more housing in this area. The most exciting potential development is the transformation of the Macy’s building in Downtown Santa Barbara into apartments. This project could provide a massive boost to the entire downtown area. Additionally, I am looking forward to the opening of Linden Square in Carpinteria."
What advice would you give to investors looking to enter the Santa Barbara commercial real estate market in 2025?
"Don’t be afraid to write offers. You never know which seller might be motivated, especially if their property has been on the market for a long time."
Moving Forward in 2025
Gene Deering’s insights highlight both the challenges and opportunities in our commercial real estate market. While high borrowing costs and cautious investors have slowed certain sectors, strong retail demand outside of State Street and continued industrial growth present
bright spots. Additionally, new multifamily developments could bring much-needed housing to our community, potentially revitalizing key commercial corridors.
As we navigate these changes, the Santa Barbara Association of REALTORS® remains committed to keeping our members and the community informed about market trends and opportunities. We look forward to seeing how our commercial real estate landscape evolves in the year ahead. mar
