QUARTZ VS. QUARTZITE: Which Countertop Material Is Right for Your Kitchen?

When it comes to giving your kitchen a transformative refresh, few upgrades are as impactful as new countertops. Two of the most popular materials, quartz and quartzite, are great options when considering an update to your kitchen. Although their names are similar, these two surfaces are quite different in origin, performance, and personality. There are advantages to both, but one may be better for your home depending on budget and lifestyle.

What’s the Difference?

Quartzite is a natural stone quarried from the earth. Quartz is an engineered material, made from crushed natural quartz combined with resin and pigments. Quartzite is pure, raw geology formed over time by intense heat and pressure acting on sandstone deep within the earth. Quartz, on the other hand, is a mix of about 90 percent crushed quartz crystals and 10 percent binding materials, giving it strength, consistency, and a wide variety of colors and patterns.

Appearance

If you’re drawn to the organic, one-of-a-kind look of natural stone, quartzite will capture your heart. Each slab is unique, often featuring soft veining and a light color palette that can resemble marble or even sandstone. It’s especially stunning if you’re aiming for a refined, elevated aesthetic with character.

Quartz, being engineered, offers near-limitless possibilities. Whether you love the look of marble, concrete, or something totally custom, quartz can deliver consistently and predictably. It’s perfect if you want a polished, modern design or need to match a very specific color scheme.

Durability

Both materials are durable and well-suited to busy kitchens, but there are a few distinctions.

Quartzite is incredibly hard harder than granite, and yes, even harder than quartz. It’s highly resistant to scratching and heat. However, because it’s a natural stone, it’s porous and requires sealing to protect against stains. Quartz is slightly softer but more flexible, which means it’s less prone to chipping. It’s also non-porous, so you won’t need to worry about sealing or stains, making it a true lowmaintenance option.

Cost Considerations

Quartzite often comes with a higher price tag. It’s a rarer material and typically imported (much of it comes from Brazil), which adds to the cost. Quartz, being manufactured, is generally more accessible with a wider range of price points making it a great option for larger projects or tighter budgets.

Heat Resistance

Quartzite wins in this category. It’s naturally heat-resistant and can handle high temperatures with ease after all, it was forged under extreme conditions. Quartz is still relatively heat-tolerant, but because of the resins in its makeup, it’s best to place hot dishes and pans on trivets or hot pads just to be safe.

Maintenance & Care

Quartzite needs periodic sealing (typically every one to three years, depending on use and the specific product). A quick water test can help you determine when it’s time if water darkens the stone, it’s time to reseal. Quartz is as lowmaintenance as it gets. No sealing, no treatments just wipe and go. For cleaning, stick to gentle dish soap and water, and avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners. Vinegar and acidic products should be kept away from quartzite to prevent damage.

Longevity

Both materials are incredibly long-lasting when properly cared for. Quartzite may have the edge in terms of natural longevity, and it doesn’t carry the risk of resin discoloration over time like quartz can. That said, quartz still holds up beautifully over decades of everyday use.

So Which One’s Better?

As a designer, I always guide clients based on how they live. Are you a passionate home cook who wants something durable and heat-resistant? Do you prefer natural textures and movement in your materials? Or is effortless maintenance and clean-lined consistency your top priority?

Choose quartzite if you’re drawn to natural beauty, don’t mind a little extra maintenance, and want something truly unique in your space. Opt for quartz if you love the idea of a fuss-free countertop that offers consistency, easy upkeep, and a wide range of style options.

Either way, both quartz and quartzite are beautiful, durable choices that can elevate your kitchen for years to come. I’d love to see your new countertops! Tag me on social @saltwood.interiors

Urban Mining

Access to rare earth materials (REM) lithium, cobalt, tungsten, nickel, and graphite is key in the production of batteries, semiconductors, wind turbines, high-tech defense equipment, and medical devices. Geopolitical struggles for access to these materials dominate the world scene. China has about half of the world’s reserves of these elements; Ukraine’s deposits are estimated at around 5 percent but are located mostly in the east and south regions of the country, areas controlled or contested by Russia. China’s dominant position in the supply chain for these materials gives it significant global influence and leverage. It has shown a willingness to use this influence.

The vulnerability of advanced economies to the unequal distribution of REM has spurred investment in developing alternatives. Innovation in battery technologies is one example. Recycling is another strategy to reduce dependance on REM imports.

Europe has made “urban mining,” the process of extracting valuable materials from used electronics and buildings, a major approach to increase its resource

independence and climate resilience. A 2024 European Union (EU) law, the Critical Raw Materials Act, aims to recapture 25 percent of these vital materials through recycling by 2030 a big increase from the current one percent. A recent study estimates there are about 700 million unused smartphones in European homes. On average, there are 74 electronic devices in each home, 13 of which are unused and stashed away.

EU member states are ramping up efforts to collect and process electronic waste. There are already 2,700 facilities recovering precious metals from tossed-out equipment. Europe is expanding the urban mining concept to the 40 percent of its total waste that comes from construction and demolition. It is adopting newer technologies that allow high-quality recycling of materials so they can be used in new buildings. This contrasts with the downcycling approach where, for example, concrete gets crushed for reuse as road base. Some EU countries are now requiring predemolition inventories of materials as a step toward more intentional reuse.

Moving beyond recycling, the EU is expanding its embrace of circular economic principles. According to the European Environment Agency, 20-25 percent of building emissions are embedded in construction materials. By rethinking the building process, incorporation of modularity, adaptive reuse, and design of equipment for longevity and repair, strategies can reduce both waste and emissions. The EU is expecting to have a new Circular Economy Act ready for 2026.

The U.S. can benefit from the EU example. Rather than using tariff threats and causing uncertainty in global markets, we could invest in the infrastructure to capture strategic elements from old electronics. Treating discarded materials as strategic assets can address climate change and perhaps keep us out of future conflicts.

Showers of Blessing Honors Donors

On July 12, Showers of Blessing hosted a lovely event to thank supporters for enabling the nonprofit to provide showers, and along with it, a sense of dignity, to homeless members of our community. The Donor Appreciation Party, held in the Unitarian Society’s scenic courtyard, featured speakers sharing their perspectives on the organization’s mission, which also includes providing toiletries, food, and connection to other services. It operates at seven sites each week with two small trailers of shower stalls.

Supervisor Laura Capps thanked supporters and lauded the nonprofit’s work, which literally, she noted, provides a fresh start for someone’s day or evening. Capps praised the nonprofit for initiating and expanding services using an innovative way to care for community members that breaks the mold of traditional congregate shelters. In touching remarks, Capps shared the importance of smiling at people when they show up for services, “knowing that for them, every day is much harder than what we’re experiencing in our own lives.”

Showers of Blessing’s compassionate team a fulltime executive director, several part-time staff, and many more volunteers embody this spirit, providing a welcoming environment for our homeless community members. Daily Operations Supervisor David Marsango, a former Santa Barbara Rescue Mission program participant who has worked at Showers of Blessing since 2019, conveyed his gratitude to donors. He feels blessed to serve guests who come in with afflictions and addictions, doing his best to make them comfortable. He enjoys seeing guests come to trust him and regard the Showers of Blessing team as family.

A former guest of Showers of Blessing related that decades ago when he was homeless, he would use the ocean, beach showers, and coffee shop sinks to rinse and bathe. Then three years ago, when he was again homeless, he availed himself of Showers of Blessing’s services. In a sweet, emotional moment, he attested that Showers of Blessing truly had been a blessing for him.

After some musical performances, including an especially fitting and delightful performance by Dan Diamond of James Taylor’s Shower the People, Executive

Director John Tamiazzo closed out the program with an equally fitting quote from Mother Theresa: “Do we look at the poor and the hungry with compassion? They are hungry, not only for food; they’re hungry to be recognized as human beings. They’re hungry for dignity, and to be treated as we are treated, and they’re hungry for our love.”

Showers of Blessing provided 7,500 showers last year to 750 individuals. It anticipates serving even more this year. At each site, guests receive a towel, washcloth, toiletries, food, and a pair of socks and underwear. Other nonprofits serving this population are also present, providing medical care and other services.

Volunteer Sally Faulstich related how she loves her position checking in guests at the St. Michael’s University Church site in Isla Vista each week because of how appreciative the guests are. They appreciate not just the showers, toiletries, and food, she related, but also being able to share their stories and to laugh with someone. “It’s really a loving community,” she added.

All Showers of Blessing sites are in South County and most are at churches. Only 10 percent of its $385,000 budget comes from government sources, and that funding is uncertain going forward. The Women’s Fund of S.B., the Natalie Orfalea Foundation, and the S.B. Foundation are among its supporters. Showers of Blessing seeks donations at any level, including sponsors for specific sites for a month, season, or year. It seeks to add an additional site in Goleta.

The mission, Tamiazzo related, is not just to give people a shower, but rather to help them gain a role in the community again. A shower is part of human dignity, Tamiazzo shared, so the program is really about love and respect.
