SUPER YACHT SHOW ANNOUNCED FOR FEBRUARY 2016

Lifestyleincoast Already well known to superyacht owners for its superb cruising grounds, Phuket is strategically located for yachts coming from the Mediterranean to visit South East Asia and the Pacific beyond. It is considered the main infrastructural 'hub' for large yachts cruising the region, with over 100 superyacht berths available between the Ao Po Grand Marina and Phuket Yacht Haven alone, as well as ample first class service companies.

South East Asia's first superyacht charter show to be launched in official partnership with the Thai Government.

PHUKET - The dates of the first edition of the new Thailand Yacht Show have finally been confirmed by organisers SYE Pte Ltd, who also stage the annual Singapore Yacht Show each April, and who have been selected to develop the project with the Marine Department of Thailand's Ministry of Transport. The event is destined to become the focal point of the luxury charter yacht business in Asia Pacific, and is set to take place 8-14 February 2016 at Phuket's Ao Po Grand Marina.

More than just a superyacht charter show, held over 7 days, the event will cover all aspects of the leisure marine world, including smaller yachts and boats for sale and for charter, B2B industry seminars, various recreational sailing and boating activities, and a luxury lifestyle exhibition, all adding to the festivities and expanding the appeal for local and overseas visitors.

The new show was publicly announced at an international press conference and private launch party in Bangkok on 16 September 2015, hosted by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. It was the P.M.'s own initiative to create an international Yacht Show for Thailand, and make Phuket the principal hub for superyachts in Asia. Also in attendance were the new Minister of Transport Arkom Termpittayapaisith and Minister of Sport and Tourism, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, both also involved in and highly supportive of the Yacht Show, together with around 150 specially-invited VIP guests. The proceedings took take place on-board the sensational 41 m Norman Foster-designed motoryacht Ocean Emerald – first to be presented with the new Superyacht Charter Licence by Minister of Transport - moored alongside the conference party in the Port of Bangkok.

Momentum and interest in Thailand's charter potential have been building in recent months after discussions between key players in the local yachting community, including SYE, and the country's Ministry of Transport resulted in last month's landmark announcement of a new license for foreign-flagged superyachts to charter in Thai waters. Government officials were quick to understand and accept the industry working group's proposal, which outlined the important economic impact from visiting luxury yachts.

The new licence effectively opens up the entire region to superyacht charter, a serious financial incentive for many overseas owners considering bringing their yachts to South East Asia at the end of the summer season in the Mediterranean, instead of plying the usual route West to the Caribbean. It provides Thailand, and the rest of Asia Pacific too, with an essential tool in its quest to become the third global yachting destination, with Phuket at its epicentre.

"Recent years have already seen a significant upswing in the number of foreign flagged yachts visiting Phuket, usually on the way to and from the rest of South East Asia, even without the ability to charter.

This year already, over 75 superyachts cruised through Phuket alone.

We want to encourage these yachts to stay for longer and use it as a base from which to charter, and we want more and more of them to come. We are therefore delighted to co-host the new Thailand Yacht Show in Phuket, which we have conceived as a platform for owners and brokers to bring yachts to Thailand and boost charter activity through interest from visitors," says Dr Chula Sukmanop, Director General of the Thailand Marine Department.

The Thailand Yacht Show promises to bring together potential buyers as well as the charter brokerage community to the well-known Ao Po Grand Marina, which has a capacity of 260 yachts up to 100m + in length. At the same time, smaller yachts and boats, both new and preowned, will also be on display for sale as well as charter.

"We are proud to have been chosen by the Government and the organizers to provide the backdrop to this most significant yachting event, which will offer visitors from all over Thailand and the wider region, as well as Phuket's many affluent residents, the chance to experience and explore the enormous potential for cruising in the region," says Kasem Chiarasomboon, managing director of Ao Po Grand Marina.

The Thailand Yacht Show will offer a mix of draws both to the buyers in luxury yacht charter, as well as brokers and managers from across the world, to learn about the full potential of the practically unlimited cruising grounds in Phuket and nearby.

This is exactly what two Iranian-born Los Angeles-based sisters Maryam and Marjan Malakpour experienced during their heyday working as popular celeb stylists whose magic touch turned them into larger than life personas in the public eye. Champagne, Seafood and Saturday Brunch at “Vana Belle, A Luxury Collection Resort” That this was going to be special wasn’t a shock for anyone, but we had been discussing our options for ‘Saturdays in Samui’ for a while and it was the new culinary event at Vana Belle, A Luxury Collection Resort, Koh Samui that had won all of our desires. Our small group of friends met on the morning of the 26th September to be part of the launch of the “Saturday Brunch at Vana Belle”.

On entering the restaurant with its magnificent sea view we were promptly invited to enjoy a welcome glass of beautifully chilled Bollinger Champagne while we first just looked around in awe at the luxurious selection. There were also some lovely selected wines, beers, cocktails, soft drinks and juices on free flow, which catered for all our tastes. Our reserved table was waiting for us, but we were all just stunned into a glorious silence as we contemplated what to try first.

This was absolutely magnificent and our chosen starters were already a King’s feast. I was immediately drawn to the Seafood Specialties, which included choices of fresh oysters flown in especially from France, Alaskan King Crab, some huge Phuket Lobster and Thai Tiger Prawns. Vana Belle’s Chef had magically prepared a Seafood Platter that was a banquet in itself. Looking out to sea from our table everyone was relaxed and chatting about the wonderful selection they had personally found. The ambience was picture-perfect the wonderful buffet, the amazing view and the live band “Night Sessions” just seemed to find exactly that tune for the moment, perfect complement to just a breathtaking day.

The buffet in itself was truly outstanding but you still had the wonderful choice of picking something from the à la carte selection. The “Vana Belle, was pulling no punches here and their choice and presentation of food was impeccable. The staff were perfect and would happily give professional advice of which wines or cocktails were available or which cuts of meat from the menu or buffet we should still try. Actually it was all so delicious we were doing our best to try everything. After seafood and succulent cuts of meat we chose some selections from the menu then with a few more glasses of Bollinger Champagne we settled down to try the cheese platter, with a flawless choice of famous French and Swiss cheeses.

Dessert was still waiting for us but we all decided to relax with a coffee first and just sit back and enjoy the view and let our wonderful feast settle. As much as I tried I could not test everything, but we all agreed that this would not be the last time.

THE TRAINING During the 32 weeks of commando training you are turned from a normal man into a steely eyed dealer of death with the fitness levels of an extreme endurance athlete. You are tested constantly at every turn, and at every step you have to demonstrate full understanding of all skills required of a commando.

The training is extremely progressive with intensity increasing each week. Weekly tests become more extreme challenges of both physical and mental abilities, along with ever increasing range of tactical knowledge, intelligence, weapon skills and battlefield tactics as the tempo increases. The training culminates into a final week of four daunting commando tests.

This is for sure no easy feat, even for the fittest of athletes. And what’s more is that it is done at the end of 31 weeks of extremely arduous training, whereby you are undoubtedly physically and mentally exhausted. The Commando tests are taken on consecutive days and all four tests must be successfully completed within a seven-day period. They include; The Endurance Course, The 9 Mile Speed March, The Tarzan Assault Course and last but by no means least, the 30 mile yomp across Dartmoor.

THE TRAINING PLAN

Ok for those hardcore fitness freaks out there looking to take their training to the next level and push the boundaries what they thought was possible, then try this commando style training plan for a week. (to be done before, during or after your regular workout)

MONDAY:

FRIDAY:

The 30 miler. Conduct a 30-mile (48-km) march across heathland and marshland areas, wearing full hiking trousers and jacket, and carrying a 88 pound (40kg) day sack or suitable rucksack. It must be completed in eight hours. Plan and revise your route as much as possible before setting off trying to keep your route on cross country heathland. Using downhill slopes and flats to run and jog and walk on uphills.

A nine mile (14.5 km) speed march, carrying 33 pounds (15kgs) in a secured tight rucksack, wearing trainers trousers and t-shirt. To be completed in 90 minutes; the pace is thus 10 minutes per mile (9.6 km/h or 6 mph).

For those of you who can nail it in less than 8 hours, try pushing yourself to the ultimate limit and see if you can complete the course before your iPod battery runs out.

Tip - pack 15kg worth of your favourite picnic food into the rucksack and arrange to meet some friends at the end. When you’ve finished the course, celebrate.

The Endurance course is a six-mile (9.65 km) course across rough moorland and woodland terrain of your choice. Try to choose a cross country style route through marshland or similar ground that contains various natural obstacles for example mud pools, wading pools and muddy banks or slopes. To be completed in 70 minutes carrying 33 pounds (15kgs) in a suitable rucksack.

As a prerequisite for Tuesday, be sure to pray for rain on Monday night. Failing that, be sure to step in every puddle in your field of vision to enhance a more authentic experience.

WEDNESDAY:

Rest Day (or do the speed march again if you like, especially if it didn’t rain)

THURSDAY:

The Tarzan Assault Course. For this session find a military style assault course that’s local to you. Be sure to ask for permission and instruction on the obstacles and try to beat the best held record for that course. Oh, and don’t forget you’re carrying 33 pounds (15kgs) in a tight, secured rucksack.

If you don’t have any assault courses nearby, plan your route through every school yard, park playground and construction site in the vicinity and make sure to jump, crawl, swing, dangle, duck, dodge and weave through every possible obstacle you come across. Add a shimmy to your moves if you like parkour.

Skip Leg Day and enjoy a well-earned rest.

Rest Day (church, roast dinner, movie etc) Alternatively a nice bike ride in the country, stop off at a tavern for a pint. Not too many though, Monday will be a killer.

Try and complete each day to the best of your ability and when you finish the week, start again but this time change around the order of sessions and always try to beat your previous times. Make sure to use the rest days wisely, by eating and drinking well plus getting as much rest as possible. Also take care of your feet, patching and cleaning sores or blisters is imperative. Most of all, try and complete this training course, push yourself to the limits of human fitness and mental endurance and see if you can train like a COMMANDO!!!!

The Attitude Club is a unique entity with a very distinct ethos; please can you elaborate on the concept and current direction for the brand?

The Attitude club‘s vision is “A little holiday that makes a big difference.” We mainly focus on developing projects in the hospitality industry or even real estate projects where we have a strong management team to manage the property after we complete the project.

How does Saturdays stand apart from other similar ‘luxury’ projects in Phuket?

Most of the other projects on the island seem to be designed to have a tiny living area and low ceiling, this was a main concern when we designed Saturdays project, 1st question that we ask ourselves is if we want to buy a condominium in Phuket what design do we want? Our answer is we need larger living spaces and a higher ceiling with premium finishing.

Our Management team is strong in Branding and Service Design, every project we start with brand concept and we continue to build up the brand together under The Attitude Club such as Foto Hotel, Blu Monkey Hotel,Two Villas Holiday.

What plans do you have in the near future for Attitude Club?

We just start a joint venture with an Investment company in Bangkok to extend our property business. We have 2 projects on hand to launch by the end of this year. We are also looking for the opportunity to extend project to other provinces as well.

Which has been your favorite project so far?

Of course, my favorite Project is Saturdays, as I started the project with my inspiration from weekend living, about passion, impression and hobbies.

We found that a lot of people love to live with a life balance and a lot of people have inspiration to do activities at the weekend, this mainly targets the group that match with our lifestyle then we studied what the market has and doesn’t have.

We also found that Phuket doesn’t have luxury service residences for longer stay.

Our study told us that we need to do something different, so finally Saturdays was the answer.

Tell us a bit about your newest development Saturdays?

Saturdays… Sleep Less Dream More is the inspiration weekend home, in a villa style residence 1 and 2 bedroom from 57 – 96 Square meters. The unit has a special area called “dream space” to be your inspiration hobbies room. Saturdays is the only one low rise and low-density condominium in Phuket. We have only 119 units on the land size 9,700 SQM. and only 4 Floors with beautiful sea views and mountain views from a secluded environment. We bring the nature inside; the unit will be painted with natural light. The semi out door living space with large balcony gives you more relaxing space.

My ideal project is for the future lifestyle that we want people to be more friendly and help each other so I love the concept of Co-housing. The project has a private area and common areas where people can get connected to do some activities together, help each other for good communal living.

How do you find balancing family and business?

My husband and I always find the time to do activities together with our 2 children, we learn and play together such as cooking, painting, traveling and more. However when we are both busy, we always teach our children to take care of themselves and each other.

We never expect or groomed our children to continue the legacy, as I believe that my children have their own interests for their life’s, I just want them to be happy to do what they love. I believe that if people do what they love they will be successful with happiness.

The Ninja is Kawasaki’s newest superbike coming in two models the H2 street bike and H2R meaning racing.

The H2 is the road version, which tongue in cheek, only has 200-horse power and a top speed of over 209 miles per hour (336 Km/h).

This then rises to 210hp with the Kawasaki ram-air system.A ram air duct was designed to take the fresh air to the supercharger in the straightest line possible. Its shape was created to match the impeller characteristics, further contributing to the engine’s output. Basically the faster you ride the better the ram air and supercharger will function. More speed = More power = More Speed = More power.

The Quest For Power The Kawasaki Ninja H2R is built as a closed-course model only allowing the unadulterated pursuit of performance, free from the limitations that street riding would impose. The result was a new model offering a sensory experience exceeding anything else that riders can find today.

The H2R is said to produce a roaring 310hp straight off the showroom floor. This rises then to 325HP at speed thanks again to the effect of ram-air. The H2R has no mirrors or turn signals and full slicks and with a curb weight of 238 kg can launch its rider to speeds in excess of 230mph (370km/h). Crushing horsepower and the supercharger make this bike the most powerful production bike ever produced 54

his month One Coast visits the offices of Khun Jok and Khun Bernard who have joined forces in their new project “Citygate”, a condominium project with 383 units in beautiful Kamala Phuket. The Citygate Concept of the buildings takes after the famous cities of the world, as Bangkok, Dubai, Paris, New York and London, embedding the architecture and culture into the surrounding walkways. These luxury one bedroom units allow both comfort and indulgence in a lifestyle choice like no other.

Khun Jok you are a local Thai actually from Kamala Phuket, you have already an impressive collection of structures that you have built, could you tell us a little about how you started your career and which have been your favourite projects?

• Khun Jok: I started my career while I was studying in Bangkok in ABAC with my old friend Khun Manas, we are both originally from Kamala and that’s where we wanted to start.

• Our first project was “The Trees”, inspired by Nature and the Mountains.

• Khun Jok: The location, the design adapted to the consumer with real functionality, the huge amount of amenities and facilities as well as credibility.

Which is your favourite room design?

• Khun Bernard: One bedroom Type E, 58 SQM, but we have just a few.

• Khun Jok: Most of the rooms are the same design only the size changes but in the Bangkok building for example, in the library and reception, we are playing with water like a river flowing under the building - Beautiful!

Being an international company where are you seeing or expecting most of your customers to be coming from?

• Khun Bernard: Europe, Middle East and China. That is the reason why Citygate has a sales office in Dubai.

What is Phuket’s big advantage as a city?

Khun Bernard you are originally from France, when did you first start as a real estate developer and how and when did you meet Khun Jok? • Khun Bernard: When I moved from France to Dubai in 2003 I started a property business as an investor, then from 2008 I started sharing my time between Dubai and Phuket where I bought my own villa. In 2012 I met Khun Jok first as a customer Buying into the Oceana Project and after a few weeks we had decided to join forces and competences to develop together new projects.

• We are both from a different generation, origin, country, culture and religion but have together the same vision making all our projects a success.

• Khun Bernard: Medical infrastructure and knowledge, beautiful beaches, bridge access to the mainland and an international airport. Phuket keeps rising up.

• Khun Jok: Phuket is an amazing hub of southern Asia; 13 million people visited Phuket last year; The entire infrastructure is improving, such as hospitals, roads, international schools and accommodation. It’s an easy destination where everybody can find something interesting.

If there were one thing you could change about Phuket what would it be?

• Khun Bernard: Environmental respect.

• Khun Jok: The road traffic, which is under improvement.

How many completed projects do you have on your portfolio?

What is Phuket’s best-kept secret?

• Khun Bernard: Khun Jok had 3 before we met (Zen + Tree + Icon Park) + 2 together Natural Park phase 1 (Harmony Villas) + Natural Touch.

• Khun Jok: Small beaches such as Freedom Beach, Sane Beach, Siam Beach or Laem Sing just close by our project; quiet, beautiful and peaceful off the beaten track.

You are one of the few condo developers who have been consistently successful in the Phuket area. Can you explain why?

• Khun Bernard: Nice design, good quality and all projects have always been completed.

• Khun Jok: I have the opportunity to complete everything in-house, we can call it a vertical integration, we have from the graphic design team to the stonemason. I try to be an implicating part in every step controlling all the work and we always complete all our projects.

If ever a city could encapsulate the fast-paced, adrenaline-fuelled, competitive nature of F1 racing,Abu Dhabi would be on the podium.Along with its stablemate Dubai, the 150km stretch of UAE coastline that separates them has seen a recordbreaking and unrivalled urban development over the last 20 years. The Yas Marina Circuit is also equipped with a permanent lighting system the largest in the world at a sports facility, allowing the track to host F1's only twilight race. We

had booked our Banana Beach Koh Hey trip a few days earlier and we were actually excited to see if it was as beautiful in real life as on their web site. This was to be a whole family outing and it would put Banana Beach to a good test if they could have enough activities for us all.

Our whole family responded to Banana Beach with the same cry “Wow”, as we neared Koh Hey everyone was hanging off the side of the boat enjoying looking at the crystal clear blue water that was teeming with fish. Once the boat had dropped us off and moved further out to a buoy even more fish arrived and we were all playing in the light waves. This was our snorkelling call and we quickly picked up fins and masks from the kind waiting staff and plunged into the warm clear water. It was magnificent with so many colourful fish swimming around us that I immediately started thinking about going for a dive later, if this was what you’d see in shallow water a dive would be even more exhilarating.

My wife and I moved to a shady spot on the beach and watched the kids playing safely in the shallows, the sand was pure white and with the beautiful clear water it was absolutely photogenic.

We took loads this was a memory that wasn’t going to be forgotten.

Arriving later at Banana Beach the kid’s snorkelled some more and we relaxed before going up to the Hornbill Restaurant.

We didn’t even have time to ask why it was so named before this magnificent bird flew in to the far side of the restaurant.

Everyone was getting up and taking photos and the second beautiful bird soon arrived. Lunch was lovely and the Thai seasonal fruits were nothing less than amazing before we moved off to the afternoon’s pastimes’ Everyone was excited and between us we’d chosen most of the activities that were available.

I went diving and had my first taste of breathing underwater with a very patient and experienced Dive Instructor. My wife choose the kayaking and just soaking up the rays on the beach.

Our eldest daughter took straight to the parasailing and then had a remarkable time trying out the Sea walker. This is where you wear a diving type helmet and can actually walk around the bottom of the ocean, amazing she said just amazing. Our youngest spent most of her time getting back on the Banana boat which I suppose it just the fun she wanted and before we left we just had to go back and try some more of the delicious Thai food at the Hornbill restaurant.

We had what can only be described as a “Wow” day, each and every one of us had a great time and Banana Beach and the kind Thai staff would be one of our fondest Thailand memories, but don’t worry we have already decided to come back next year and 100% we will visit you all again.

Dressing up elegantly is every Italian’s inborn penchant toward feeling on top of the world by espousing grace and recording special moments of their lives and this is very much what defines who they are from within. They enjoy this part to the fullest, thus reinforcing the protocol behind their “dressing etiquette” wherever they go with a sense of pride. There is never a lull moment. That’s why they are called “ultimate stylists” on the planet.

After all, their country is a leader when it comes to constantly triggering interesting changes in the world of fashion thanks to its high-profile names the likes of Giorgio Armani, Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada and Fendi and now a number of upcoming talents who are smart & intelligent enough to be reckoned with in terms of what they offer.

Out of this new school of thought comes a well-known figure Elena Ghisellini, founder of the eponymous luxury handbags line and head accessory designer of Emilio Pucci. While she has already worked with famous names in the industry and earned their respect for designing spectacular accessories, she has repeated the same magic with her own brand bit by bit quite successfully.

It’s no surprise that her enticing bags have caught everybody’s attention in the showbiz world. Needless to say, for a reason why!

In an exclusive interview with One Coast, we sit down with her to find out how she got into designing handbags (which mean a lot to her and hates it when they are indiscriminately described as “accessories”) and what more she has in store for her brand.

Ghisellini’s leaning toward fashion was her armor to make her life more happening. Her motivation for it comes from the great passion she has always had for fashion and, more in general, for the system behind it and then came her interest for the materials, elegant and malleable, and specifically for the leather goods.

But it all began when she graduated from IED in Rome. While she was here, she learnt a very important lesson from her master. “I had an amazing teacher who taught me the secrets of colors. He channeled my sensibility and ability to appreciate them by understanding their absolute power of seduction. I confirm, however, that what really makes a difference and brings greater results, is the creative and impetuous hint that has always characterized my work,” she says.

After this, her third stint happened to be rolling with Givenchy where she met its creative director Riccardo Tisci and they instantly got along with each other so well. “Working alongside him thanks to my experience and his incredible talent, we were able to refine the vision of a contemporary design and by far it proved to be a huge success,” Ghisellini explains.

Then she moved to Salvatore Ferragamo where she engaged her focus on understanding how to handle a large scale production without ever compromising on creativity and quality. “Moreover, it was an eyeopener for me to see myself being part of a huge chain creating global products that are suitable for markets with different needs,” she expresses. “It was quite interesting.”

The idea of launching her brand was made possible on the job, working determinedly with one big brand after another…but also having a brand of her own was born from her need to create unique products that, first, she would like to use and wear as well as fully express her desire of quality and handiness.

As she fondly recalls, “The people I worked with helped me learn a whole lot about the products, their construction and production. Knowledge is power!

Discretion and professionalism always win and are unquestionable. Without my background, I could never have pursued my personal adventure comprised of many difficulties but totally full of greater satisfaction at the end of the day.”

Seated at the helm of two big brands known for their own distinctive touch they invest in the making of handbags, it’s not easy to keep up with the pace of the job. Yet, she maneuvers her way through it all effortlessly with the help of her proactive team whom she always thanks for their sheer allegiance. “You know it’s a matter of rhythm. I have a great team, a group of talented and skilled people who tirelessly work with passion. That’s the secret behind the creation of standout collections, characterized by high creative content and quality,” she says.

Consumers notice your products only if they have something fabulous to offer. And her creations are proof of that as she replies, “Diversity, innovation and uniqueness are what define my work!

My goal is to make products that are recognizable at a glance and desirable for the emotions they arouse—an object that every woman recognizes for its high quality and peculiar style; a perfect balance between materials, design and research plus available at the right price.

So she always uses the best leather and she likes to go to the tannery and personally develops unique finishes, from different weights to multiple tones.

“The reason I do it all is because they add value to the end product,” she says.

I know that Queen Rania of Jordan and Olivia Palermo really like my collections. Jessica Alba is a fan of the Gia bag; Margot Robbie loves the Vicky in bright red and recently, the Oscar winner Patricia Arquette chose the Petra clutch for a gala event,” she says. “Then, famous models the likes of Izabel Goulart, Isabeli Fontana and Juliana Martins are also attracted to my bags.”

The more I tried to find about Ghisellini during our ongoing conversation, the better she came across to me with her intelligent thinking. She says she adores women who, besides their beauty, excel in their work and commitments. “Femininity and elegance are great values but personality and self-awareness define the image of a person,” she suggests.

Like all renowned Italian fashion designers, she also wants to carry on the splendor of her country’s style heritage with the same candor and finesse. “It’s quite incredible how quality makes a difference; it goes beyond all trends! When a bag is well done and it’s timeless and fits all women, the age factor hardly matters. Chanel, Hermes or Gucci are the finest examples of a myth so true that quality lasts. I want the same for my brand: to create ageless collections characterized by my personal vision and style,” she says.

Ghisellini’s love for Dubai and the region is apparent the way she sums up the success of this wonderful city in her words. “Dubai is already a fashion capital! The Middle East has an amazing culture and philosophy to share and a lot of entrepreneurs are ready to invest in the gigantic market it is. I think it would be positive if the Arabic culture became more relevant; it would create a positive cultural exchange between dif ferent countries,” Ghisellini says.

Another tempting part of her bags is embedded in their color combination. “Colors are essential in my collections and, in general, in my life! The Felina Rainbow bag is successful for its evocative power: a kaleidoscope of colors makes it unique and special. Colors have innate meanings and are positively timeless,” she says.

Inspirations have immense power that can move mountains.

Ghisellini passionately believes in this insight; it actually brings her closer to what she aspires to achieve in her life. “My inspiration always comes from everyday life, from women’s needs and attitude.

Nature and animals are my greatest love and source of emotional inspiration, they stimulate my aesthetic,” she says.

She loves the music scene so much so that she has a great deal of respect for women who have made it so big in this field. “They are talented, strong and passionate about their work. Standards such as the Cantaloupe and Fresh Parma ham, simplicity itself and yet exquisite. The pan-seared goose liver, melt in your mouth delight for those who enjoy the Fois Gras.

Fish dominates our personal menu selection, as our chef and his team advise us on our arrival of the fresh catch that has been brought in just now.

As a starter, the panzanella [Tuscan bread salad] with cucumber espuma, a light "foamy" antipasto to prepare our stomachs for the other courses. The second dish is absolutely spectacular, a trio of Carpaccio of Sea Bass, Red Tuna Tartar & Mediterranean Scampi: "Over the years we have found the best suppliers, and we have developed the fastest, safest and most efficient way to import fresh ingredients from the Italian market to Bangkok. Usually most of the fish arrives on Thursday evenings.

These scampi for example arrived at the restaurant just half an hour ago" explained the chef. The European sea bass, tuna and scampi literally melt in the mouth.

The cuisine at 'Gianni Ristorante' has evolved on three basic principles: Mediterranean style, modernity and the highest quality ingredients.

Gianni is often quoted as saying; "My main task is to find the best ingredients and my second task is not to ruin them" The restaurant is welcoming, with tables discreetly spaced to guarantee customer privacy during lunch and dinner. The background music is subtle and sophisticated and absorbs the conversation of the other guests. It is unnecessary to stress that the professionalism of the staff always impeccable.

Standards are always high, and they start with the menu. It is primarily still made up of authentic home-style dishes. We hope Signor Favro never removes permanent fixtures like the hearty and handmade strozzapreti pasta with lamb ragu or the best buffalo mozzarella in Bangkok, which is so delicious that it’s hard to look past and sample the many other selections on Gianni’s extensive menu.

My friends enjoyed a terrific tartar of line-caught sea bass served marinated in a tangy caper citronette and dressed with a balsamic reduction and cracked pink peppers; then delicious and generous portions of ravioli filled with savoury salted cod and pureed tomato in a sauce of spring onion-accented cheese; and an unbelievable dish consisting of a barely cooked poached egg coated with polenta flour and parmesan cheese then pan-fried and served in a Montasio cheese sauce with tender green asparagus.

We then proceed to the pasta: Home Made Angel Hair Olive Oil, Garlic & Chili with Clams “Veraci”. "For this dish I've used four different types of chilli peppers, some milder and some more piquant" explains Gianni Favro while we are served a white wine from the Tyrol region.

Our main dish is an Oven Baked Filet of Wild Red Snapper on Lemon Scented Potato Mousseline. A simply exquisite dish and minimalist in its preparation, proving once again that a high quality ingredient, such as this red snapper fillet, can be garnished simply by a sprig of thyme. Nothing else is required to make it memorably sublime.

Meanwhile, after all this gastronomic adventure, we have arrived at the cheese course. On our plates the traditional pane carasau with flaky pieces of soft pecorino cheese with almonds and grapes. A red wine from Piermont region in the North West, a veritable delight to the palate, accompanies this course.

Panna Cotta with Passion Fruit Compote concludes our dinner. Or almost; a bottle of Barbera Chinato and a simply divine Medley of Amadei Chocolate arrives. A fitting end to an excellent dinner.

With his now virtually famous Ristorante, now much more than 20 years in operation, Gianni Favro certainly deserves much of the credit for Bangkok’s reputation as the mecca for Italian cuisine in our region. “Gianni’s,” has achieved this with consistently outstanding food, an elegant, cosy and opera-house atmosphere, polished service at the levels above many five star hotels and the requisite unique-factor for successful high-end Italian restaurants: Gianni himself.

Recipes Fish & Chips

Lawd above! fish. , innit. The best fish to use is Cod, If not available Haddock is a good second choice.

Tattys or Potatoes Try to use a floury potato Fat or Lard To cook the Fish and Chips the traditional way use Beef dripping/oil(Lard) for both the Fish and the Chips. However, using vegetable oil or sunflower oil works fine too.

INGREDIENTS

The Fish : 4x175g/6oz of white fish fillets, preferably cod or haddock.

225g/8oz self-raising flour, plus some extra for dusting.

Salt : 300ml/10 fl oz of beer or lager.

The Chips : 8 large floury potatoes

METHOD

1. Pat the fish dry on paper towels and lighty dust with flour.

2. Sieve the self-raising flour with some salt into a large bowl and make a well in the middle.

Slowly add the beer and mix the flour until it’s a liquid and beat until smooth. The consistency should be of a very thick double cream that should coat the back of a wooden spoon.

3. Half fill a deep frying pan with oil and heat to 190C/375F or until a bit of old bread browns in seconds. Dip each piece of fish in the batter and immediately cook for 5-6 mins or until golden brown and crispy. TIP Dip the fish in the batter at the last second before putting it in the hot oil. Helps give it the nice light crispy batter.

4. For the chips cut the potatoes into thick 1cm wedges and leave in some water for 20mins to remove some of the starch. Drain and dry on kitchen paper.

5. Half fill a deep frying pan or electric deep fat fryer with lard and heat to190C/375F .

Quarter fill a frying basket with potato chips and cook for 6 mins. Remove & drain and repeat with the remaining chips.

How to serve - The authentic way!

Most Folk believe that the ONLY way to enjoy true Real British Fish and Chips is to wrap them in newspaper and douse them in malt vinegar and salt. If you do serve them this way please make sure that you wrap them in greaseproof paper before wrapping them in the newspaper. Apart from helping keep the majority of food off the print, this method helps keeps the meal insulated and hotter for longer. It also helps stops any oil and vinegar from soaking through the paper onto your lap or hands.

London has become a busy metropolis of city life for business, business & more business. Most will only remain in the city for a short time and move on once other opportunities arise. The exception to this rule is the Proud Cockney. Although small in number these fine people are world famous for their love of life and being born within the sound of the Bow Bells, these are the church bells of Saint Mary-Le Bow. This area was once the poorest parts of London and Cockneys survived only through their quick wits and ferocious loyalty to each other.

Food for these hard working folk had to be cheap but nourishing, most were tough Dockers or market traders. Cockneys were famous in the 19th century for their strength and hard toiling nature plus off course the even more famous Cockney Rhyming Slang. Traditional Cockney fare included gelatinous dishes such as pigs trotters, jellied eels and the famous British Fish & Chips. Food was always well spiced and never bland like many non-British institutions would have you believe.

WHAT IS COCKNEY RHYMING SLANG?

Rhyming Slang phrases are derived from taking an expression which rhymes with a word and then using that expression instead of the word. For example the word "look" rhymes with "butcher's hook". In many cases the rhyming word is omitted - so you won't find too many Londoners having a "bucher's hook" at this article, but you might find a few having a "butcher's".

The rhyming word is not always omitted so Cockney expressions can vary in their interpretation, and it is simply a matter of choice which version is used.

Sleep is important.

In fact sleep one of the only things you can lose and never get back. Well known for its essential qualities of recovering body and mind, sleep supports the immune system and generally keeps us in fine fettle. But what are the effects of losing this precious commodity?

Scientists still don’t know exactly why we sleep, but according to a nearconstant stream of research, most of us need between six and eight hours of shut-eye to function normally. Unfortunately, only about 30% of the population are getting it, which makes sleep deprivation a certified public health epidemic. Fact.

Most of us know the short term effects of staying awake a little too long.

We've all pulled an all nighter. Some of the more decadent among you have likely managed an all weekender. But how about an all weeker? Or a full waking fortnight? In fact what are the limits of sleeplessness before the brain tells the body it's shutting up shop? And what madness lies in between?

Sleep deprivation takes an enormous toll on our bodies, beyond the obvious physical signs of bloodshot eyes and giddy episodes. However, what’s more alarming is the negative impact of sleep deprivation on the brain.

The sleep-starved brain may fail to encode memories successfully in the first place, thanks to altered function in the HIPPOCAMPUS, as well as the PREFRONTAL CORTEX, and PARIETAL LOBE, regions. One study found that people are more likely to incorporate misinformation into memories of events observed after a night without sleep

ANGER Sleep loss primes us to focus on negative experiences, misinterpret facial expressions and pick fights. Emotional volatility may partly be a product of interrupted communication between brain regions.

FMRI of the well rested brain shows connectivity between the AMYGDALA , a limbic system structure critical to emotional processing, and the MEDIAL PREFRONTAL CORTEX, which helps regulate feelings (i.e. tells us to chill). Sleep deprivation cuts this connection, letting your revved-up amydala (and your mood) run wild.

IMPAIRED WIT When you skimp on sleep, the clever commentary may not flow so easily. Sleep loss affects cognitive processes like divergent thinking, which helps us switch topics nimbly during conversations. Scientists found that activity in the INFERIOR FRONTAL GYRUS, increases when sleep deprived people tried to list uses for different objects, suggesting the brain draws on divergent thinking to compensate for strained cognitive functioning.

HALLUCINATIONS The well rested brain filters stimuli (noise, light, smell, etc) to separate what matters from what doesn’t and prevent sensory overload. When the brain can’t filter the information coming in, chaos ensues. After pulling an all-nighter, people may begin to anticipate things that aren’t there, including objects.

SLURRED SPEECH The TEMPORAL LOBE, the brain region associated with language processing is highly active in well rested people but inactive in their exhausted and enunciation-challenged counterparts.

CEREBRAL SHRINKAGE Healthy adults getting poor sleep lose volume in the FRONTAL, TEMPORAL and PARIETAL lobes, one study showed. Researchers don’t yet understand if sleep loss causes shrinkage or vice versa.

CRONUT BINGES Sleep loss corresponds with decreased activity in the FRONTAL LOBE`, which controls decision making, and more activity in the AMYGDALA, a key player in fear detection. Together, these neural changes create a brain mechanism that dulls judgement and ratchets up desire - the ideal mind-state for scarfing down fistfuls of bacon.

RISKY DECISIONS When sleep-deprived people prepare to make economic decisions, the brain’s reward centre in the PREFRONTAL CORTEX lights up, suggesting they expect to win (e.g. make money). But when risky choices don’t pan out, people’s brain activity decreases in the region related to punishment and aversion (the ANTERIOR INSULA), suggesting they don’t care about losing money as much as they would on a good night’s sleep

When you don’t get enough sleep, your body releases more of the stress hormone cortisol. In excess amounts, cortisol can break down skin collagen, the protein that keeps skin smooth and elastic. Sleep loss also causes the

Resident TV show addict Brett Turner weeds out the best from the rest of the box sets out there available to watch and download, mixing bang up to date stuff with old ones you may have missed.

out now The Returned (Les Revenants) France / Canal+ Season 2 starts 28 September 2015, later in other countries.

Just when you think the zombie premise has been rehashed within an inch of it’s (un)dead life The Returned came along with a completely fresh and original take on the story.

The hugely successful first season won an Emmy award for Best Drama Series and within a couple of minutes of viewing the pilot it’s easy to see why.

Gripping, unsettling but moving and never in it for cheap shocks, it tells the story of a remote French town where dead people start to reappear, exactly as they were last seen and with no recollection of the time, sometimes decades, between the present and when they died.

Each character had a unique story, rather like the ensemble of the similarly weirdsville show Lost. Camille is a schoolgirl that reappears to her devastated parents and twin sister after dying in a coach crash. Omen-like Victor is a cute little boy who smiles benignly while leaving a trail of bizarre deaths behind him. Serge is a serial killer that comes back to haunt the brother that put an abrupt halt to his activities. Simon, who apparently committed suicide on his wedding day, merrily returns to his bride after she has had his child and moved on with the town’s senior policeman, expecting everything to continue as if nothing has happened. How the characters deal with these emotions – recapturing the past while trying to move on in the present – is what makes the show fascinating.

Indeed the characters are superbly written and acted, all the while with mysterious events going on all around (in one bizarre moment the wildlife in the surrounding forest commit suicide in the

Classic Box Set Life On Mars UK / BBC 2006 – 2007 “My name is Sam Tyler. I had an accident and I woke up in 1973. Am I mad, in a coma or back in time?”

So begins each episode of Life on Mars, a tale of a young but senior police officer from Manchester who is somehow whisked back to the early 1970’s. He finds himself in the same police station three decades earlier, being expected to solve crimes and generally 112

As nostalgia pieces go, this one is hard to beat. I’m someone that can vaguely remember the 1970’s (I was born in the year it is set) and the producers have captured the era perfectly. Britain was a very different place then, with an identity far removed from the UScorporate Mini-Me it has become. It was also scarred with a collapsing industrial economy and riven with social unrest. Throwing a cell-phone wielding, ultra scientific policeman in to this maelstrom of political incorrectness is a stroke of genius, and enables all kinds of guilty pleasures.

Just about every cliché from the television cop series past is gleefully revisited (at one point a police car actually does drive down an alley, hitting multiple cardboard boxes). We’re also put on dubious moral ground, as the old school methods of physical violence to solve crimes are proven to be haphazard but sometimes brutally effective. Sam acts as our conscience through all this, shaking his head at the Neanderthals he has to work with.

As someone that’s a cinematography geek for me the show is gorgeously shot, in a sort of surreal twighlight, entirely on location in the stunning mountain town of Annecy (I highly recommend taking up the extra hard drive space and watching in HD if possible), accompanied by a cracking score by Scottish post-rock band Mogwai. It draws obvious inspiration from Twin Peaks and visually the vampire movie Let The Right One In, with a dash of True Blood as the living react to being slowly infiltrated by complete outsiders, some welcoming them with open arms, others not so much.

Season One left us with a cliffhanger and according to producers Canal +, 27 questions.

I highly recommend catching up and seeing what answers this fantastic show gives us.

The main antagonist and chief bringer of pain to said suspects is DCI Gene Hunt, brilliantly realized

by Philip Glenister. He and his smoking, drinking sidekicks happily plant evidence and physically intimidate just about everyone around them, using gut instincts (Hunt calls his the ‘Gene Genie’) rather then the forensic, meticulous methods Sam Tyler is trained to use. It’s a great juxtaposition of old and new attitudes and whether we approve or not, Gene Hunt is often a great outlet for modern frustrations at how in the pursuit of equality and social justice political correctness has paralyzed much of modern life.

One of the tools used by the creators to achieve Sam’s feeling of disorientation is the outstanding sound design, aided by a fantastic a soundtrack from the period pounding along in the background. Indeed the opening scene played out to David Bowie’s haunting Life on Mars from where the series gets it’s name is a classic piece of modern television.

To cap it all, the show didn’t overstay it’s welcome and drag itself out after the initial success of the first season.

Neatly wrapped in to 16 episodes, it tells a cracking story, takes us back to a lost time, and asks us again and again until the very last scene when Sam must decide for himself – are things really better now?
