Positive Thoughts on a Positive Day There’s much turmoil in the world today, much disappointment and anger. We are all faced daily by stress and difficult situations. But if we apply a little mindfulness and thought to our actions and reactions this then can in turn give us a positive response from a negative situation. Let me explain, for example you are by no fault of your own in a situation where somebody is angry at you. Probably just something small and insignificant but you’ve just had a lot of negative feelings and emotions thrown your way. Arguing only perpetuates conflict. Picking up that bag of burden now is the wrong thing to do. I don’t mean to be emotionless or cold, but now you have the choice of allowing this act to darken your day or to accept what has happened and move on with your beautiful day still shining. So why stress out on things out of your control or something that you cannot change. There’s a wonderful world out there full of different cultures and love. It was my dream with One Coast to showcase many of these good things in life and to basically share the love we have. Myself and our team strive to pick out the Crème de la Crème for you and in this issue, you’ll not be disappointed. Yet again we have some amazing photographs from Bogdan Theodorov with his Sanctuarium collection. Then we were lucky enough to get an interview with Ha Anh Vu, one of the most talked about supermodels and personalities in Vietnam, not only a celebrity but a personality that represents the younger generation. She is an emblem of the generation that is young, intelligent, dynamic, and ambitious. If your life needs some excitement Jeff Chan gives us an inside look at how to throw yourself out of an airplane, Jeff is a certified Wing Suit instructor, one of the newest skydiving sports. If something more down to earth is your thing we have one of the newest Electric mountain bikes, technology is evolving so fast that now even this is possible. Want an island getaway that is still stunningly undisturbed, we show you Koh Kood, a secret emerald in the Gulf of Thailand. But if that’s too slow then jump in the new Dodge Demon, 840 horse power will certainly take your breath away. So, we have the ultimate in fashion, personalities, sports and locations to go. Dive into One Coast and just have a great positive day.

Ashi’s new collection embodies the emotions of that elusive woman, with cascading veils to hide the sorrow, leaf-shaped embroidery across the bodice to recapture love, tree-inspired designs along the neckline to give back her voice. Hues are soft, almost ephemeral, a million shades of pearl, with surprise splashes of sun. He has brilliantly woven a tale of passion, of eternity and of remembrance which goes like this: She arrived at midnight, in a rush of passion, entering her hotel room with barely contained sensuality, and breathlessly waiting. Every step she heard on the wooden stairs was a promise; every door that opened brought love blissfully closer. The hours passed, the night turned into day, and again into night, an endless passing of time, waiting for fulfillment that never came. She slid on the bed and fell into oblivion, clinging onto empty promises, succumbing to a veil of sorrow, while gusts of an unforgiving wind kept the shutters forever closed. As the years flew by, she gradually transcended her physical beauty, imprinting herself onto the very room where she sought refuge.

There’s a whisper in the air, a lingering sense of her presence. Even though she appears to have vanished without a trace, she remains in that gilded room, inside a once grand hotel’s crumbling beauty. Her heart melted into the chair, her hair transformed into the drapes and her eyes became the all-seeing windows. The very core of her being inhabits the room. Her soul has found solace within the four walls, and the room has absorbed her feminine essence, transforming itself into a mirror image of her persona. She may be gone but she’s still here, wrapping her spirit around anyone who crosses the threshold. 17 O N E CO A S T www.ashistudio.com

Unspoilt Untouched Beauty

Dreamy

Koh Kood It does seem today that more and more people are seeking to get away from it all and find that tiny piece of unspoilt paradise. Sadly, this in turn means that these beautiful pieces are often very quickly commercialized, built up and over run by package tourism. We’ve seen it happen to quite a few places around Thailand and although most still are amazingly picturesque having a dozen 7 11’s just across the street doesn’t really add to the ambience. So, finding that piece of paradise that offers a little but not too much and is wonderfully unspoilt is a very special find and One Coast were very pleased to stumble on Koh Kood, or sometimes written as Koh Kut. A small island nestled in the Gulf of Thailand close to the Cambodian border, home to rainforest, coconut and rubber plantations, sleepy fishing villages, and fewer than 2,000 people. Most have heard of Koh Chang, well after Koh Chang there is a smaller island Koh Mak then just a touch further Koh Kood. Koh Kood's great advantage is its relative remoteness. Getting there requires an internal flight or train journey from Bangkok, followed by an hour's boat ride from the mainland. This sounds more of an expedition than it is. It's only an hour flight from Bangkok to the small airport at Trat, and the refreshing taxi ride to the ferry port took us through lush green countryside, past villages and temples and delicious local fruit stalls. There are at least three piers in close vicinity which take you at various speeds over the clear blue waters of the Gulf of Thailand and if you’re lucky you might glimpse a dolphin on the way. Lodging on Koh Kood is varied. There are homestays and budget bungalows, as well as a handful of luxury resorts, but even these encourage a barefoot, relaxed approach. There are no landlines, internet access is usually available but don’t count on it, and only a few cars as getting them to the island is difficult and expensive. All this gives the island a slow, warm and very tranquil laid back feeling. This was exactly what we had been looking for, it's not that we don't like other people but we were seeking that perfect place to relax and unwind. Koh Kood was just that place.

lifestylein coast

Our first stay was at Montana Bungalows, after disembarking from our express boat which wasn’t quite as express as we expected we jumped in a waiting pick up and took the half hour journey over a surprisingly good road then two km on rough tracks through the rain forest until paradise itself opened up. Praveena, our host greeted us at a long wooden pier like path with a warm smile chatting in a delightful mix of French, English And Thai and guided us through the line of wooden beach bungalows and palms lining the inner sea lake and past the large family bungalows in front of the beach to the reception area. Local fruits had been freshly pressed and served deliciously cold as our welcome drinks. Already I could feel myself relaxing and even though I’ve seen some sumptuous beaches in Thailand over my 25 years this almost private quiet resort on the edge of the rain forest and mangroves was just the pinnacle of perfection right now and gave me more of a feeling of coming home. Everything was just right, no hustle no bustle, no big choices just a small selection and lovely open friendly folk greeting us with hugs and smiles. What more could you want with the crystal-clear water only a few metres away and a huge white sandy beach just for yourself, already I didn’t want to leave. Montana Bungalow images courtesy of Andrea Wittstruck

I can’t think of many places I have enjoyed staying more. There was no reason to lock anything up here whether yourself or your possessions that had no real value here on this dreamy part of the world. Evenings were a family affair, and everyone would join with a Thai Seafood BBQ and local dishes served. To walk or even ride out of the resort at night was difficult on the track but I never heard anyone complain. Those there joined the family BBQ drinking Leo beers and SangSom whiskey on the terrace watching the squid fishing boats on the horizon until retiring with a big smile content to their own bungalows for the night. We left Montana after 3 or 4 days, whatever it was much too early. Leaving was almost a sad affair but with hugs and promises of a return. I can remember Praveena shouting out to us as we rode off “come back soon you family now” and she was right. We had rented a scooter for our week in Kood and it is the best advice to anyone coming. The island might not be the biggest but it is full of unspoilt beauty with good roads and exploring was all part of the fun. No real direction each day just riding around checking out the beautiful rain forests and the waterfalls was bliss. We found local seafood restaurants at the end of a pier serving fresh fish, prawns and crab from nets hung round the restaurant. Small Thai stands on the side of the road with the most delicious BBQ pork and Som Tam imaginable. There might not be your huge choice on Koh Kood, but the offered selection was always special. Our next stop was Away Resort, arriving here the GM Jonny rushed out to greet us and after giving us a short tour of this beautiful luxury resort and introducing us to various staff on the way left us to enjoy a welcome cocktail in their picturesque restaurant along the beach. Away Resort was certainly something more noble with its classic Thai wooden bungalows overlooking a bay, two restaurants, spa, pool and sports facilities. Staff were super friendly, helpful but graceful respectful and diligent in their work. The grounds and bungalows were impeccable and this could have been no mean feat on this laid back island. We took a kayak over to the next beach and into one of the estuaries and a speed boat trip around Koh Kood itself. We walked seemingly untouched beaches, snorkeled through swarms of colored fish and corals. Away Resort prided itself in giving you lots of options, you could do so much or just as much just lie back in their beach hammocks, enjoying the refreshing cocktails and let Away & Koh Kood recharge your system. One special tip that should not be missed if you’re lucky enough to visit Away resort is book their special dining table at the end of the jetty. That romantic table just a table for two or four at the end of the pier was just something amazing, such a wonderful feeling dining in the cool evening breeze watching the sunset over the ocean with some scrumptious cocktails and delicious seafood. Do not miss out on the chef’s tamarind prawns, super delicious. It’s been a long time since I could unwind completely but here my body was being revived and my mind replenished. Koh Kood together with Away Resort and Montana Bungalows gave me more real holiday and relaxation than I’ve had for years. 24

BVLGARI CELEBRATES THE ELTON JOHN AIDS FOUNDATION’S 25 ANNUAL TH

Sir Elton John and David Furnish hosted the gala event where BVLGARI auctioned off an 18 karat white gold, full pavé diamond Divas’ Dream necklace, raising $75,000 for the foundation. Two of BVLGARI’s signature timepieces were also ballot prizes awarded to two very lucky guests who guessed the most correct Academy Awards winners. Alicia Vikander captivated the EJAF audience from the Hollywood & Highland Center as she opened the 89th Annual Academy Awards ceremony shining in a High-Jewelry Divas’ Dream necklace. Bulgari once again innovated the red carpet with a cylindrical tunnel of sparkle and light.

mmy Choo unveils the Spring Summer 2017 Women’s and Men’s campaign starring models Kiki Willems and Lou Gaillot. The inspiration for the collection is brought to life by photographer Dan Jackson with a bold set design realised by Shona Heath that features enlarged hand-painted florals. The larger-than-life canvasses seduce with flora in sensuous tones of iris purple, icy blues and marigold oranges. The video sees the botanica come to life with animation that calls attention to the graphic flora-inspired shoes and bags from the Spring Summer collection. This evocative, landscape blooms for the Jimmy Choo Woman and Man to explore together. "I wanted the new campaign to portray the Jimmy Choo woman and man in the same environment. The one-of-a-kind beauty found in nature was a key inspiration for the Spring Summer collection and how we need to pause in our busy lives to stop for a moment and marvel at the wonders we co-exist with. The oversized perspective of the set reinforces the extraordinarily mesmerising power of nature,” said Sandra Choi, creative director of Jimmy Choo.

Telling Fear To Shut Up!

OONNEE CO COAASSTT

By Rodney King

body&mindmindful lifestyle

The fear of making a mistake, of messing up, almost always is surrounded by thoughts about yourself when it happens, or what will others think? I have always felt like there is two people inside of me, a bipolar struggle between the one voice that says, “Go for it,” whilst the other voice says, “be careful, it won’t work, you will mess up.” It does seem that this second voice has a lot more to say about how I should live my life. The thing is, as far back as I can remember it was painfully obvious that messing up, that making a mistake was a bad thing. My earliest memory of this was coming home with my school report card, with good to great grades on almost everything, except for that one ‘F’ — and you guessed it, all the focus goes to that failure. In hindsight, what is clear now, is that nothing I did badly in at school growing up do I use today as an adult, and that everything I did well in, I still use. Culturally and societally, the obsession of getting things just right as others have defined it for us, is so pervasive, that most of us live unfulfilled lives. If we try to live a life of success as defined by others, then we can never truly experience personal success itself. Ironically, and there are exceptions of course, almost all things we could fail in life — we can recover from. Almost all the things we are afraid of, like looking like an idiot in front of others, won’t end our lives. I am fascinated by this resistance as Pressfield calls it. This inner fear, often promoted by an inner critic that keeps telling us we are not good enough, that not looking bad in front of others is far more important than living our dreams. This resistance is so deeply ingrained in our psyche, that even when we attempt something that we know beforehand will result in little fall out if we fail — still holds us back from exploring our fullest potential.

As a martial artist, and jiu-jitsu practitioner I see this all the time on the mat. Guys and girls who won’t go for something just in case they mess up, or lose a position, or get caught in a submission. But here is the thing, they know beforehand that even if they get caught in a submission they can simply tap and their opponent will let go. They can, therefore, immediately role again. Their ability to start over, can happen as many times as they choose. Yet, even knowing this, the resistance stops them from freely exploring all the possibilities before them. In life, most of the time, making a mistake never means you cannot restart. As a coach, I see my students struggle with their resistance, but what they likely don’t know is that I struggle with it too. Our collective conditioning of never feeling good enough, of being held back by fear of upsetting the status quo, or not giving it everything we have because facing the social fall out of failure seems so insurmountable. The question then arises what can we do about this? As simple as this may sound, I have found that you must talk to your fear, just like it talks to you, but this time you must put it in its place, where it belongs. This is what I tell fear, “Just shut up, you are not the boss here!” “fear, get out of my way, because whatever you say isn’t true” You need to challenge that voice of fear, that voice of resistance as it arises. Don’t give it time to try to convince you otherwise. Shoot it down, before it even begins to tell you the myriad of ways that things can go wrong. Deep down, we know what we want, what we need to move towards to experience the world as we know we should. If you then never allow fear to have room to talk, then you leave a lot of room for exploring your full potential.

Vietnam’s Real Life Supergirl

Ha Anh Vu In this issue, we talk to Ha Anh Vu, one of the most talked about personalities in Vietnam, not only a celebrity but personality that represents the younger generation. She is an emblem of the generation that is young, intelligent, dynamic, and ambitious. Known for her professional ethics and talent in fashion & music, Ha Anh is also a media darling. The real story of a young girl striving her dreams.

O N E CO A S T

focusabout her

Ha Anh Vu welcome to One Coast can you give us little detail about yourself and your family? I was born and raised in Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. My grandparents are very well known writers in Vietnam while my father is a movie maker and my mother is a journalist. After attending school I was later educated in England achieving a bachelor degree in Business Studies. It was in London where I first found myself modelling while studying music at the British Academy of New Music. Then my career really took off from there. You have worked and starred in the Vietnam’s entertainment industry, tell us a little about this? After almost 10 years of studying, working and travelling the world as a model, I decided to visit my homeland after a modelling job in Shanghai. I quickly realised that Asia and in particular Vietnam had become so vibrant, a lot of new business and new ideas were starting up.Vietnam and Asia have always been in my heart but it was then I felt I needed to come back and be part of it all, the development of Vietnam and emergence of Asia in the entertainment and fashion world. We are told you also had a successful Pop single debut, what was this called and how did your singing career progress? I have loved music ever since I was born. My mother put me through over 10 years of learning to play the piano. While I didn’t make to be the greatest pianist, I have developed good ears for music but I started to practice singing in the bedroom. It was then in England, after graduating from University of Reading, I won myself a scholarship to study Vocalist Artistry, to try and see where I could go with my talent. Later, when my career in Vietnam blossomed as a model, I went back to music. I worked together with some young talented musicians and we started writing music and making music videos. To me music is a passion but still an experiment and though I have performed all over Vietnam and I have started to cross overseas. I am hoping I could collaborate with a lot more musicians and create more songs that speak to me and my fans. You are also Vietnam’s renowned IT girl, what does this entail and who have you worked with? It entails me working with the best people in Vietnam, be it journalists, TV producers, Fashion designers and the best Vietnamese and International Business brands. I have worked with, and opened most of the flagship stores of International Luxury brands in Vietnam. But not only that, I still keep my work outside of Vietnam too. I travel to work in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Philippines, London and Los Angeles. I love traveling with work and I have learnt a lot about myself and the world in doing so. Does seem like you work 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, do you have time for any relaxation or pastimes? Oh yes, now I am at a point where I can be more selective with work, I choose to put my family and myself first, when the truly interesting, or meaningful work comes along I will pick those that continue to help strengthen my brand, that give me room to learn and develop myself. So, in the mean time I make sure I spend time doing charitable work, or spend time traveling with my newly wedded husband, or visiting my family in Hanoi. I also love to write and recently I have published two books called, “It’s me Ha Anh” and “Living in a man’s world”. I found ‘down-time’ very important because it gives me new ideas and inspirations to write and to be creative. I am brainstorming my own television show right now and I hope to create a ‘Ha Anh Vu’ show that allows me to meet and speak with the people of Vietnam. How often do you come to Thailand, what do you love about this country? I come quite often for a break. I absolutely love the food here! You can find great food everywhere, from the street, to the shopping malls to a variety of amazing restaurants. I love the Thai people, they are gentle and sweet and quite forward thinking. You recently signed with YSIS Entertainment, a celebrity-brokerage agency for Southeast Asia? My collaboration with YSIS Entertainment as my Southeast-Asia representation became fruitful from judging a beauty pageant in Manila, Philippines. Our synergies are matched. I’m interested to explore opportunities across Southeast Asia. As I travel between London and Vietnam for work, why not travel and work in the ASEAN region? I want to be influenced by other cultures as well to be able to extend and celebrate the Vietnamese culture worldwide.

You seem to be successful in everything you do, where does your drive and enthusiasm come from? The drive to prove myself I suppose. Being a young Asian girl, to a young woman, you always must prove your worth to people around you. Being a beautiful woman in Asia, you have to prove a lot more; that you have the capabilities and that you can think and do more than what is expected of you. So, I keep proving myself to myself by pushing my boundaries. Learn, Push, Prove, Evolve… and here I am. I believe my success is because I always strive to excel in whatever project I undertake and I encourage those who work with me to do the same. I am excited to see where I am in 10 years from now. You are also the Good Will Ambassador of UNICEF Vietnam, Smile Operation Organization. Please explain what you do for them? I worked with Unicef Vietnam as the country’s Good Will Ambassador for two terms. I travelled the countries, met and learnt about children who face tough conditions, disadvantages, children with stigmas…The aim was to help develop awareness so we could create a more informed

48

O N E CO A S T

society that understands the need to improve the conditions for these vulnerable children. I have also worked with Operation Smile to raise funds to repair facial deformities, and various other charitable organisations. Where is your life heading now and what do you hope to achieve? While I continue to develop my brand further in Vietnam, I am now ready to step out to other markets in Asia to see what I can be achieved because I have found that much of Asia is developing rapidly to the world. As always, I want to Learn, to push, to prove and to evolve and I am ready to explore!

Kjetil Aaboe Norwegian Bluepoint Success Story

One Coast magazine would like to welcome to this issue Kjetil Aaboe, born in Norway and with business interests in many parts of the world, especially exciting his new project Bluepoint Condominiums in Phuket, One Coast needed to find out more about this multi-talented Scandinavian.

Kjetil, welcome to One Coast, would you give us a short introduction about yourself? I have been based in Singapore with my wife and 3 kids since August/2009. The 2 oldest have finished their IB and are now studying in London and New York, with the youngest of 11 years still in Singapore. So, we are a truly multi-national family now. My business interests have diversified from being concentrated on shipping and logistics in the past, to being spread on several different industries today. I am still involved in freight forwarding, but Real Estate development represents now the biggest part of my professional life. In addition, I am also the exclusive distributor for the lifestyle brand (fashion apparel, and home & living) Lexington Company in Southeast Asia, and finally I am the JV partner for Asia for the Norwegian market leader in Voice Call Recording (www.touch.no). We’ve heard a little about your Real Estate business that you are already successful in many parts of the world. Where did your passion for this career start? The passion for real estate started in my home town of Oslo, Norway. At an early age, I was successful in acquiring a portion of an old factory in Norway. We turned this into an office section for 50 people, rented it out for a while, and sold it 5 years later. Some years after that I purchased an old beachfront house in Marbella, Spain, completely refurbished it, rented it out, and sold it again 9 years later. My perspective is to look for good potential, refurbish, use or rent out, then sell. 50

From the choice of SE Asia, you have chosen Thailand and more specifically Phuket, what brought you first here and why these choices? Phuket has a perfect location and in my view a perfect climate. The other reason was the location of Bluepoint which is on the hillside above the Emerald Bay, just 2km south of Patong, close to 5 beautiful beaches, and the all units share a fantastic view. What was your concept behind “Bluepoint”? Coming from Norway the idea was to build something with top quality, privacy, sufficient space, large terraces, and with fantastic views. Our project can tick all these boxes. The project consists of only 20 units, all with 2 to 3 bedrooms, and total size ranging from 125m2 to 277m2. We wanted to build something the buyers would be proud to own and where they would be able to spend the most of their time. You have certainly taken sustainability serious with Bluepoint, what areas have you concentrated on and why? Rooftop landscaping has been designed to ensure the reduction of cooling costs and to help the development fit into its natural surroundings. Building materials and all engineering systems have been chosen to reduce operation and maintenance costs, and minimize negative effects on the surrounding ecosystem.

You have chosen Lexington for all the soft furnishings in Bluepoint, you being the sole distributer for Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. How do you get from Real Estate to this luxury American brand? Lexington, www.lexingtoncompany.com is a major player in Europe and has almost 1000 retails locations in 24 countries worldwide. Until 2016 they had no presence in Southeast Asia at all. The Lexington brand provides the consumer with a complete design concept for home textiles. The collection consists of duvets, pillowcases, sheets, bedspreads, blankets, throws, as well as terry towels, bathrobes, pyjamas, table linen, kitchen towels, aprons, details and different accessories. Leading from Lexington’s success in Norway and Europe, we wanted to introduce this fantastic brand to the Southeast Asia markets as well. We signed an agreement with The Lexington Company AB in March/2016 and we are currently their exclusive distributor for Lexington in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. We give each owner the option of fitting out their units in the Lexington style, and we see in our projects worldwide that this is very popular among our clients. Already Bluepoint is becoming quite a success story in Phuket, but looking at your portfolio you are not one to rest on your laurels, what are your plans? After we have completed Bluepoint, we are considering to launch a Bluepoint Phase 2…. More info to follow about this later.

A potential customer or friend asks you why it is good to live in Thailand? What is your reply? I would tell them to choose Thailand for the following reasons: The climate, the Thai culture, the Andaman Sea, and finally: you will in general, get value for your money in Thailand. You’re obviously a well-travelled businessman, you’re taking a short break and going to your favourite place, where is this? Since I have been based in Singapore already for close to 8 years, and if I am not choosing to spend the short break in Phuket, my favourite locations would be back in Oslo, Norway and Marbella, Spain. Tonight, in Phuket you’re going to your preferred restaurant, where are you going and what would you eat? The best restaurants I have tried lately would be Cut and Acqua, and I also like a lot of the dishes at Wine Connection on Beach Road in Patong. What is your favourite pastime in Thailand? It would be to play golf, scuba-dive or long distance bicycle rides. Thank you Kjetil for your time and we look forward to hearing more about you and the sensational project Bluepoint and especially phase two in the future.

I love to experience new places and meet new people and as a travel writer, I’ve been extremely fortunate to be able to visit dozens of countries around the world. Of all the places I have been,Thailand has always had a special place in my heart, especially the island ok Koh Samui with it’s crystal clear waters, white sand beaches, and friendly locals. When a recent assignment asked that I visit the Samui’s newest hot spot, I jumped on the first available flight. Arriving at the airport I was met by a private car and quickly whisked off to Beach Republic The Residences, one of the island’s trendiest new hotels. But as I quickly discovered, Beach Republic is so much more than a hotel. After a long flight, my Penthouse was just what the doctor ordered. One of 43 units at the Beach Republic The Residences, which is comprised of private pool villas and penthouses, and deluxe apartments. The One Bedroom Penthouse was immaculately furnished with light and modern décor. After a dip in my own private pool with stunning sea views looking out over Lamai Bay, I was feeling refreshed and relaxed. O N E CO A S T

The hotel is located adjacent to the Beach Republic Ocean Club where all guests enjoy VIP access. With two ocean front infinity edge pools, oversize loungers, a restaurant serving fine Mediterranean and Thai cuisine, DJs spinning mellow grooves, and an Asian Fusion Spa, Beach Republic is truly a lifestyle destination. Walking in, the first thing that caught my eye was the curved wood roof and sexy red décor. The interior space opens up to large, comfortable daybeds and loungers dotted around two crystal blue pools, which are set against a stunning stretch of palm tree lined beach. Right from check-in I was greeted by the famous Thai smile. The staff were very friendly and helpful as I was informed of the many options for relaxation, dining, drinking, dancing and more. There was something for everybody. Keeping with the Republic theme, the daily Manifesto newspaper highlighted several weekly events at the resort that all looked too fun to pass up. Being a Saturday I opted to indulge in a few cocktails at the Soulful Saturdays Pool Party. I sat poolside and have to admit took advantage of the buy one get one free on an array of fine liqueurs. I also spoiled myself with the mouthwatering wood fired pizza, which has been called the island’s best – it didn’t disappoint! The Dj played mellow house, the atmosphere was sunshine-perfect, and the signature Republic Mojito with local Samui rum, Sang Som (Thai whisky), lychee, ginger, sugar, mint and soda made my feet tingle and my smile widen. After a restful night’s sleep in one of the most comfortable beds I have had the pleasure to lay in, Sunday was upon me. And at Beach Republic, Sunday means one thing – Sunday Sessions featuring The Ultimate Sunday Brunch Club™. The weekly brunch has become an island institution and has been featured in the New York Times and CNNGO.com. It was not difficult to see why. Nothing short of a feast fit for a king was on offer – Wagyu beef, roast lamb, Fine De Claire oysters, Maine lobster, Alaskan king crab, gourmet Thai selections, sushi, fine wines and Champagnes and more. The desserts were absolutely to die for with the chocolate mousse being my favorite. The crowd was a mix of locals and tourists alike. Sunday Sessions draws an eclectic mix – young travelers, families, and middle aged couples all enjoy the very mellow and casual yet upscale vibe. From noon ‘til 1.30pm there was live acoustic music followed by the resident Dj spinning mellow grooves till 7pm and being accompanied by a excellent Saxophonist, perfect for a lazy day under the sun. With the sun setting and the soft light bouncing off the turquoise sea, I found myself once again mesmerized by the undeniable charm of Koh Samui.

Focus’s Project-Y Real Mountain Bike DNA with a Motor to Flaunt

58

O N E CO A S T

lifestylecoast ride

At One Coast in our “Coast Ride” we normally look at the newest most powerful motorcycles that are being showcased by some great manufacturers. This issue we are downsizing a touch but certainly not cutting back on technological innovations and we are still riding on two wheels. Both hard-core motorcyclists and bicyclists might detest the new Electric Mountain bikes but these so-called E-MTB’s are taking the mountain by storm and they are certainly worth the ride. In the past few years, all the major brands have introduced e-bikes, which speaks of the market’s potential. You can bet that companies like Giant, Scott,Trek, and Specialized aren’t throwing money into development and tooling unless they believe e-bikes are here to stay.We got a chance to look at one of the newest on the market. One of the latest designs by Focus ProjectY, has real mountain bike DNA, and rides like it. It’s an absolute riot to ride and you’ll go longer, further and deeper than you ever anticipated. If you ride a lot, you know it’s exhilarating to smash along on dirt as fast as you can go—some extra power just makes it more fun. Project Y - under this name the engineers of the bicycle manufacturer Focus have developed a carbon hardtail mountain bike with a strong electric motor, capable of

long distance. This real lightweight bike weighs less than 13 kg, the actual engine itself taking up only a little more than 3kg of this. This aids the performance, should you need to use the mountain bikes without electric drive. Focus’s Project-Y, manages to house a powerful 250 watt motor and battery, despite its phenomenally low weight, all slickly integrated in an amazingly beautiful design together with the main frame downtube. This motor and battery can be removed from the frame in just one click and with just one hand disassembled. The opening is closed with a flap to protect it from moisture and dirt. The transmission remains within the frame, then the E-MTB becomes a conventional mountain bike. Focus’s Project-Y ensures rigid handling, with its mass distribution and agile riding behaviour. The desired electric assistance can be selected via a compact integrated LED screen on the handlebar grip, which also informs the rider about the remaining battery life. The driven riding time depending on the assist level is about one and a half hours, meaning you can go longer and further than ever before. O N E CO A S T

The Fastest Muscle Car Ever at 840hp The Dodge Demon is one crazy piece of American muscle

DODGE CHALLENGER SRT DEMON Dodge were insanely smart with the marketing of their new Dodge Demon with social media tweaks and teasers until after much commotion they revealed their new street legal drag car, the Dodge Demon. Behold, the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon: 'Highly capable on the street, absolutely dominating at the drag strip' After 13 weeks of hype, Dodge said last month that the Challenger SRT Demon will go on the market with 840 horsepower and 770 pound-feet of torque — the ultimate Fast & Furious car that automobile nuts across the 60

O N E CO A S T

country have been waiting for. “It is wild, it is quick. …this car is the epitome of power,”. “Everything has been beefed up. Its sturdy, its stout.” Dodge said the Demon is the world’s fastest 0-60 production car: It can get there in 2.3 seconds. And from 0-30 mph in 1 second. Plus, a quarter mile time of an incredible 9.65 seconds. The Demon weighs about 215 pounds less than a 707hp Dodge Hellcat. It also boasts a massive new hood scoop that supports what Dodge calls a "forced induction" system. The car also has a dedicated drag race driving mode.

lifestylecoast drive And with that signature, comes several standout characters for the Demon. First, the Dodge Demon is the first-ever factory production car with street legal drag tires. Because of the extra wide treads, the Demon sports some aggressive-looking side fenders. And yes, the Demon will be able to run on special racing high octane fuel. It also consumes premium gasoline but don’t expect it to run well on regular gas. Fuel-economy figures have not been further disclosed. In part, that's because the car is barely street legal. In fact, it's basically designed to be driven rather than trailered to the local drag strip. There is one important thing to note about the Demon, especially if you're thinking about getting one: There is no passenger seat or rear seat with the standard model. You can though order your Demon kitted out with these seats at a very reasonable surcharge. To round off the fun is the Demon Crate, a special equipment pack that turns the car from a regular street ride into to an all-out drag-strip monster. The crate has 18 parts that sets the car up for the drag strip, including performance parts, track tools, spare wheels and something it calls the "Demon Track Pack System." Among other unique options there’s “Front-runner” wheels for use at drag strips, a foam case for those wheels and track tools to help the owner change the wheels.

Production of the limited-edition, single-model-year Challenger SRT Demon is to begin this summer, with 3,000 planned for the U.S. and 300 for Canada. Deliveries to Dodge/SRT dealers will begin this fall. The Dodge Demon will appeal to only a small number of buyers but will be of interest to car enthusiasts everywhere. It fits squarely into the strategic direction of the Dodge brand, which is to epitomize an "American performance brand."

Sand in No Day your Face and

Fun in the UAE Desert The UAE has a stunning coastline, tranquil seas and year-round warm waters that are loved by water sports enthusiasts but this is only a tiny proportion of the land, most is covered by hot unforgiving desert. The UAE desert might not be an obvious choice for a sporting holiday with blistering heat in the day, freezing nights and no water so it’s no surprise for some these are best avoided. But for a small percentage of us that are willing to face the harsh desert elements there is much fun to be had. The desert. It makes up more than 90% of the country and it's the biggest outdoor adventure playground you could imagine. In all directions, the desert offers varied and mesmerising landscape that has great potential for exploring and amazing leisure-time activities. But let’s start in the air, did you know there are a fair number of reputable companies in the UAE offering excursion flights in light aircraft, helicopters and even sea planes. Take an exhilarating hot air balloon flight or charter a small aircraft and just enjoy the incredible UAE scenery. You can complete pilot courses from full-blown licences to one-off microlight plane sessions. Going one step further for those of you extreme enough to dislike the plane you’re in, you can also jump out of it. UAE offers some of the best tandem, parachuting, sky diving and even incredible wing suit courses on offer from reputable companies all above the amazing UAE skyline. Prefer keeping your feet on the ground, how about some trekking. How else to see the country but on your own two feet? Here though we do advise to only go with a professional company. The desert is a beautiful landscape but it doesn’t forgive and apart from that these companies have the complete best routes organized and will supply you with all the equipment and a guide for safety. Trek routes are most often graded in difficulty categories and go for an easy one first you will find them tougher than expected.

O N E CO A S T

69

70

O N E CO A S T

Then for those of us in seek of adventure but preferring it to be motorized we can move onto 2 or 4 wheels. There are motorcycle adventure tours on offer from a couple of hours to full day trips. Bikes of various capacity are available and routes to suit beginners to moto cross professionals. All companies offer complete safety equipment and guarantee exhilarating fun plus sand in your teeth. Those not too sure about 2 wheels how about trying a quad bike tour, quad biking might look a little on the rough-and-tumble side, but in fact in UAE they’re much smoother to drive than they look. Going one step further with 4 wheels and total enclosure you will find guided and driven 4 x 4 adventure tours with vehicles of all sorts even including taking out a Hummer. Want to push the limits then some companies offer Dune bashing, You and your friends can clamber into a sturdy four-wheel drive and let your driver take on the desert sand dunes for you. All you’ve got to do is sit tight and keep your eyes open, easier said than done when you’re in mid-air, your stomach is bouncing, clouds of sand are spraying against the windows. Being a country filled with desert, the past sports played in the United Arab Emirates [UAE] are still practiced today, which include camel and horse racing. The UAE has come a long way since those days and with nationalities from all over the world, working and living in the UAE, more and more sports become popular amongst UAE residents and visitors. Horse riding is more these days and individuals interested in learning can take lessons and find the necessary equipment easily accessible. Horse riding and racing facilities can be found in the Equestrian Clubs found in the major cities of the UAE. Dubai also hosts the annual Dubai World Cup horse race, which is the richest horse race in the world. Being in the UAE and desert we can’t forget about taking a ride or trek on a camel. Normally the excursions are shorter than you’d expect but riding a camel is found to be rather tougher on the butt than anticipated. There’s also camel racing, if you’d prefer just to watch, which takes place in the morning on the weekends of the winter season (October to March) and is a unique sport, which is an integral part of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) heritage. The racing takes place at special tracks around the country and the atmosphere is electric, especially during public holidays when major races are held for considerable prize money. But whatever your poison you will find something absolutely great activities in the UAE desert, whether you take to foot, bike, quad, vehicle or plane you will certainly have fun in the sand and this is not a day at the beach.

Words by Crispin Paton-Smith One great way to get on the chaos free track is to visually create this illusion of more room, height and light with a monochromatic colour scheme. And what better colour to use than the timeless and opulent “white.

Since the key to decorating with white is to vary tones, textures, and patterns, those of us on a budget don’t have to spend extra money and time to track down items of a particular shade. If you’ve ever been to pick out a white paint, you’ll know what I mean when I say white isn’t “just white.” There are dozens of shades of white ranging from cool to warm. Varying tones, textures, shapes and prints of white (or mixing white with ivory or taupe) is an excellent way to add contrast in an all-white room. The beautiful thing is that there are no rules regarding this – an all-white vase collection looks striking no matter where you put it. If your room doesn’t have much architectural detail, warmer whites will cast shadows and banish that sterile look so common in an all-white room.

White is known for opening even the smallest, darkest spaces. In a small or poorly lit space, use the same colour white throughout the space – on the walls, edges, and ceiling – to provide a cohesive look. Painting everything the same colour will allow the eye to roam throughout the space making your room appear larger. Then, you can bring in your personal style or theme and introduce tons of texture with accessories. If you are looking for inspiration to design your room interiors in white, this article is for you. These gorgeous pictures of white rooms from Anne Sophie Maestracci have character and speak volumes of space with that relaxed Samui beach inspired look.

STARS SHINE IN BULGARI AT THE 89TH ANNUAL ACADEMY AWARDS CEREMONY

Olga Vilshenko Another cool luxury brand from Russia By Nagmani The phenomenal Russian touch to global fashion is gaining ground steadily. And so it’s being celebrated by the fashion fraternity back home very much in style. Designers emerging from the mainland are turning heads with their modern silhouettes and colorful embroidery whilst keeping alive the spirit of its traditional clothing in the background. Most importantly, the one who is presently entertaining us with her captivating yet simple designs is the Russian-born London-based fashion designer Olga Vilshenko. As far as Vilshenko can remember, her passion for fashion took form thanks to her mother whose love and care for the whole family was seemingly visible in the form of designing dresses for them, leading her to like what fashion represented in a broader sense. “I still have fond memories of my mother making clothes for them in her spare time, so I learnt a lot about dressmaking from her in my early childhood. I grew up watching her work constantly and learning how to sew from her,” she said.

Olga Vilshenko

While she was lucky to have this firsthand experience of how garments are designed, she knew deep down that she needed to study fashion in depth if she were to make it her career. This realization led Vilshenko to study at the Institute of Fashion and Art in Russia, and then went one step further in order to hone her skills at Istituto Marangoni in London. It was all worth it for her at the end of the day.

“Now I had the tools I needed to make my mark in the world of fashion so I made my debut with the Spring/Summer collection in 2011.” The recognition that Vilshenko brand is garnering for itself globally today is just because of her elegant fusion of Eastern folklore and heritage with Western designs and silhouettes.

“This vibrant combination is what gives my brand its signature look,” she said.

86

O N E CO A S T

The SS17 collection of Vilshenko is based on the artworks of British artist Lindsey Carr, engineering her intricate sketches in print to tell a story of surrealistic fantasy. The juxtaposition of light and dark is woven through the collection from degrade prints to birds and hand-drawn flowers.

“While key fabrications for the collection include crushed textured silk, washed cotton linen, laser-cut Swiss dot cotton, fine printed silk cotton, I’m working more with denim going forward into the next seasons’ collections too,” she said. “ I’m quite excited about it. ” When it comes to seeking new ideas, Vilshenko is very much inspired by the classic fairytales that made up such a big part of her family life. “I also find travel such a big source of inspiration – be it a far-flung destination or somewhere closer to home,” she said. “There is always something out there in one form or another to feed your creativity.” As for a role model she has or looks up to in her life, Vilshenko only sees her mother fit for this title that she says confidently nobody can replace. “I would not be where I’m right now both in my personal and professional life if it was not for her. I learned how to be a mother, a woman and a businesswoman from her,” Vilshenko said.“She has been the biggest influence and the biggest encouragement that I’ve had and that anyone can wish for.”

Celebs’ fascination with Vilshenko Many high-profile celebrities have worn her designed collections giving her label more exposure all over the place. They include Anne Hathaway, Naomi Watts, Florence Welch, Alexa Chung, Dakota Johnson to name a few. “I’m very lucky to have had them donning my dresses with so much panache. It feels so good. Other women that I would definitely love to dress are Alicia Vikander, Diane Kruger, Zoe Saldana – the list goes on!” It’s no wonder that she always feels flattered when she sees the most stylish women of the world having fun in her clothes. “I design for every woman who wants to show her femininity and modernity through wearing my pieces. When I see a woman that I don’t know walking down the street in Vilshenko, that feels so special to me for it makes my day and reminds me of why I do what I do,” she said.

88

O N E CO A S T

Sticking by her own style statement As a mother, she likes to be comfortable in every possible way. That’s why she tends to wear lots of denim, whether it’s slim-fit or wide-legged jeans, paired with an embroidered blouse. Otherwise an embroidered skirt paired with a high-neck knit with a Vilshenko long fur-collared coat she says is always a great outfit for a multitude of occasions. “For evening, I prefer long and lean dresses paired with high heels,” she said. “You feel more airy.”

Boom period for fashion in Russia Vilshenko is happy with the progress the fashion industry is making in her country as she put it this way, “There are so many amazing designers emerging from Russia – it’s an exciting time for us! The BFFI x Buro 247 event that we were part of this year really summed it up – so much creative talent, and though each one of us have such different aesthetics, our heritage will always unify us.”

But the increasingly demanding nature of fashion as it’s surely becoming day by day has created a whole new challenge for the designers at all levels. In the face of this unavoidable complexity, they are often participating in producing special collaborations and capsule collections to meet the ever-growing demands of the consumers. Nevertheless, the quality must prevail in each stitch. “The hot topic today is ‘See now, Buy now’ fashion which is religiously followed by millennials. In such circumstances, our task is to maintain the identity of Vilshenko brand by keeping it more competitive and unique,” she said. “It’s quite necessary to do so. After all, fashion has now become more dynamic than ever.” Our conversation with Vilshenko ended on this positive note from her: “We would like to focus on the core values of the brand, exploring new concepts and growing our clientele. As long as this overall criterion is followed, the outcome will only be better.”

It doesn't seem to matter which class or boat they race on - the conditions are always terrific, the race committee work and event management are unsurpassed, and the competition is always full on. When I mention sailing in the Gulf of Thailand, everybody always mentions Samui Regatta" “For some, the onshore part of the Regatta is almost as important as what happens on-the-water and this year the local support from Samui businesses has been overwhelming. A number of new resorts have offered their support, we welcome back many long-term supporters and are excited to be working them again. The Regatta has really become a true community event. Extreme Jeff Chan is a 28 year old based in Hong Kong with a background in the financial services industry, and is also a passionate skydiver. During the 4 years he has been in the sport, he performed over 900 skydives around the world. Although Jeff is primarily a recreational skydiver, he one of the few wingsuit instructors in Asia as well. In this article, Jeff shares some of his insights about this exciting sport!

How I Got Started It all began in the summer of 2013 after I graduated university and was living in San Francisco waiting to start my first job. For anyone interested in more adventurous sports, it was a fantastic place to be. The city is surrounded by prime spots for windsurfing, surfing, paragliding, paramotoring, skydiving, etc. I booked a tandem skydive on a whim one day and became instantly hooked by the incredible sensation of freefalling at 200 km/h. Just the thought that we as a species have developed to a point where we can jump out of aircraft for entertainment sounds insane. I had to be a part of it! I spent the next two weeks obsessing over skydiving articles, videos and forums, then finally decided to enrol in an Accelerated FreeFall Course (AFF) to begin learning. That marked the point where I started investing increasing amounts of money and time in the sport, and I don’t regret it at all!

100 100

OONNEE CO COAASSTT

What I Love About Skydiving Skydiving is amazing – almost therapeutic – on many levels and it extends far beyond the jump itself. Being a skydiver is a lifestyle and a gateway to vibrant communities, personal development and a treasure trove of experiences few will ever see. Simply put, there’s no such thing as a boring day of skydiving. Beginners in the sport will often be overwhelmed by the sensory overload in the first couple of jumps. Hurtling towards the ground from thousands of feet in the sky is way out of the comfort zone of the average human, so it takes a while before you snap out of the state of shock. By the time I learnt to get over it, I began to appreciate the beauty of my surroundings and enjoy the sensation. One of the key factors to being a good skydiver is to remain relaxed throughout the jump; it keeps the body fluid as it glides through the air and prevents instability resulting from struggling against the forces. In this sense, it teaches me to be 100% focused and to purge all other thoughts while being in an extremely unnerving circumstance. The amalgamation of such contrasting feelings makes the time in freefall so vivid, and certainly adds to the addictiveness.

livingin explore

I also love that there are an increasingly growing number of ways to grow in the sport. The boundaries are constantly being pushed, and new disciplines pop up every few years. With no fixed progression guidelines (except in cases where safety is a concern), I am free to pursue any form of skydiving I like. For the last 2 years, my main interest has been in wingsuit flying, which I feel is just the best thing ever. Even after over 700 wingsuit jumps, I’m still learning new things and I’m considering participating in competitions in the future. As an instructor, it’s also great to be able to contribute by teaching wingsuiting.

Biggest Challenges For Me Ever since I relocated to Hong Kong in 2015, the biggest challenge was getting to a dropzone. Unlike most of the western world, skydiving is relatively new to the Asia and therefore there are far fewer skydiving operators in Asia. What used to be an hours’ drive to the nearest dropzone from my place in San Francisco is now at least a 2.5 hour international flight and a long drive. As you can imagine, the costs add up quickly and it no longer possible to jump as frequently as I would like to.

Biggest Misconceptions Last but not least, the skydiving community is full of fantastic people. Whether I’m looking for skydiving advice or I need help changing a flat tire at the dropzone, there is never a shortage of offers. There are less than 50,000 active skydivers, so the community is small and the bond we share is special. Even most professional skydivers are very down-to-earth individuals and they are often keen to help less experienced jumpers. Since skydivers tend to travel a fair bit, dropzones are also a great place for meeting new people and gaining exposure to different cultures.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that skydiving is an unsafe, unregulated and expensive hobby for reckless adrenaline junkies. The technology incorporated in modern skydiving equipment has come a long way since the 60’s when civilians began skydiving. All skydiving rigs now come with a main and a reserve parachute. In the event of a malfunction, the reserve can be deployed manually. In a worst case scenario, it will be triggered automatically by an Automatic Activation Device (AAD) at a predetermined altitude. Every component in the skydiving rig has been over-engineered to function correctly even in highly unlikely situations.

O N E CO A S T

101

Governing bodies such as the United States Parachute Association (USPA) regulates the issuance of licenses, safety standards, skydiving procedures, and operational protocols. In order to meet their standards, every aspect of the skydive is scrutinized by multiple people including FAA certified riggers and skydive instructors.Things are designed to be as idiot-proof as possible! While skydiving isn’t cheap by any means, the costs can easily be controlled. Once a license is obtained, most dropzones charge between USD 25-32 for a jump. Equipment can sometimes be rented, but generally they hold their value very well. Based on my experience, the demographics of skydivers are very surprising – even for me. Most of the people I jump with are between the age of 25 and 50, and work regular jobs on weekdays. You never know if the person next to you is a lawyer, doctor, engineer or business executive. I once found myself on the same plane as Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, while he was on a training jump.

My Favourite Discipline Wingsuiting, by far. This is the only discipline where skydivers can actually achieve significant forward movement. By wearing wingsuits made specifically to inflate and imitate a semirigid wing surface, wingsuiters can get a glide ratio of over 3:1 (meaning 3 feet horizontal per 1 foot vertical) and remain in freefall for an extended period. While in flight, I’m literally a human aircraft – the various parts of the wing are controlled by moving my arms, legs, head and torso. It is a relatively sophisticated discipline and inherently less forgiving with mistakes, so a minimum of 200 skydives is required before a skydiver can learn to fly a wingsuit. Wingsuits come in a range of shapes and sizes. Generally speaking, the smaller ones are more manoeuvrable and less prone to losing control; hence they are mostly used by beginners and acrobatics pilots. Larger suits offer more wing surface area, which in turn allows better glide and range. With a skilled pilot, a large wingsuit may even be flown next to parachutes. Wingsuits were invented in the 90’s and have only recently surged in popularity. As a result, a lot of the fun is in discovering new techniques and learning from each other.

Skydiving Photography I’ve dabbled with photography a number of times in the past, but I always struggled with finding good subjects. Skydiving solved that problem instantly as every jump is filled with unique and stunning visuals begging to be captured. On most jumps nowadays, I mount a DSLR camera on my helmet just in case I see something I like. Skydive photography presents a totally different set of challenges. Due to the fact that the camera is mounted above my head and is triggered by biting on a switch, I cannot access even basic functions while in freefall. This means that all variables such as lenses, aperture, shutter speed, etc. need to be set while on the ground and it’s up to me to frame the shot correctly in the air.The desire to get better photographs motivates me to keep working on my wingsuit skills.

General Information About Starting Skydiving First Jump The first step to trying out this awesome sport is to book a tandem skydive! When considering a dropzone, I strongly suggest paying attention to the following:

• • •

Make sure that the skydives are performed from at least 13,000 feet. At this altitude, a skydive will last about 50-60 seconds, so any less altitude would greatly reduce the amount of fun. It takes about 20 seconds for most people to get over the initial shock. Beware of operators that drop skydivers at lower altitudes than advertised. Avoid dropzones that fly old and poorly maintained aircraft.Although it is common for operators to purchase second hand aircraft, they should ideally be less than 20 years old. Look for dropzones that hire well trained instructors with over 1,000 jumps. Check that the dropzone is an affiliate of a reputable skydiving association such as USPA and does not have safety violations.

The risks of a tandem skydive is often grossly exaggerated. Statistically, it is safer then paragliding, scuba diving and many other adventure sports. The instructor will control the bulk of the skydive, and you will only need to follow several basic instructions (it is for this reason we often use the term “students” rather than “passengers”). There’s not much preparation required on the student’s part, except to look good for the camera! Speaking of which, I find that most students often regret not choosing a better camera package to record their experience. I strongly recommend a package that includes a dedicated cameraman flying around you to capture videos and photos.

Prior to the jump, your instructor will brief you and place you in a harness. This harness will eventually be clipped securely to the instructor to keep both of you firmly attached. Once on the aircraft, try to relax and enjoy the ride. When it’s time to exit, your instructor will walk you to the door and jump out together. The first few seconds of freefall can be disorienting and overwhelming. A friend likes to tell his students, “if you can’t see, open your eyes” and “if you can’t breathe, stop screaming”! Everyone’s experience is different, but judging from the smiles it’s easy to see that everyone loves it just as much. It’s a feeling that is hard to put in words… you just need to try it yourself! At about 5,500 feet, the instructor will deploy the parachute and fly you back to the dropzone for landing.

Getting Licensed If you’d like to take it to the next level, you’ll need to enrol in an Accelerated FreeFall (AFF) course (or equivalent in other countries). It consists of 7 jumps and plenty of ground training in between. Each level is designed to introduce new elements to test your abilities, and you must pass both the ground training and jump in order to advance to the next level. There will be 2 instructors holding on initially and by the last level, there will only be one instructor who observes you perform the drills from a short distance away. Upon completion of the AFF course, you will be cleared to jump solo and continue practicing on your own. Under USPA rules, a minimum of 25 jumps is required to qualify for an “A” License, which will allow you to begin participating in group skydives. Skydivers can earn up to a “D” License when they have at least 500 jumps.

Progressing There is an abundance of resources available to keep you progressing in the sport. One common alternative to skydiving is fly in an indoor wind tunnel. Although it is not quite the same thing, many of the skills are transferrable, and indoor flying may be more accessible to some. I am a big advocate of going on skydiving trips around the world to learn from new coaches and participate in events (known as boogies). The elite skydivers tend to congregate at events, so it is a great opportunity to get inspired and gain valuable experience. Whatever your interests in skydiving may be, the most important thing is to have fun! Koh Samui Rotary Club It seems it was only yesterday that the Rotary Club of Koh Samui was born. Yes, ROCKS, a rather appropriate acronym for a club based on a rocky island, was chartered on 22 January 2003. Despite its relatively short life, ROCKS has shown it has started on a strong and firm footing. ROCKS' mission is to consolidate the club with strong fellowship and understanding of Rotary and to concentrate our activities on the island community and the environment, but with a look outside our island when need arises. We have so far achieved this and more. District 3330 recently awarded the Rotary Club of Koh Samui for being the most hands-on and active club in its community. The club plans on working with the children of its community to further spread the skills that Rotary offers and help them also assist there community. The club's current projects include a “water for life” project at Wat Lamai School which the club is hoping will be used as model to help get approval for a Global grant so the same program can be rolled out across all schools in Koh Samui. The club is also currently involved in a house building project to help families who lost their homes during the terrible floods which occurred several months ago. If you would like to help with these projects and future ones please contact Alex via email at alex@rotarysamui.org. You are also welcome to join our Rotary meetings at Nikki Beach every first and third Wednesday evening from 7pm, our fellowship dinners held at a 5 star restaurant every last Friday of the month and now our new Business Lunches. ecohabitat Soneva Kiri nestles within 400 Rai (1 Rai is 1,600sqm) of tropical rainforest on Koh Kood. Thailand’s fourth largest but least populated island. These rainforests are widely regarded as the most biodiverse terrestrial ecosystems. The entire surface of the British Isles supports some 3,842 vascular plant species. Thailand supports at least 10,000 species, with new ones being discovered on a regular basis. The mangrove forests along the western coastline of Koh Kood offer flood protection, protection from erosion, carbon storage and nurseries for fish and crustaceans. It is estimated that mangrove ecosystems are essential for the reproductive success of 75-90% of tropical commercial seafood species. Due to the southern climate and the proximity to Cambodia, Koh Kood shares much of its forest diversity with the largely unexplored and untouched rainforests of the Cardamom Mountains. By far the largest part of Koh Kood is covered with tropical rainforest, most of which is still in its untouched state because of the low population density. The following are just some of the plants found at Soneva Kiri. Anacardium occidentale (cashew) The cashew tree is an evergreen tropical tree. It is native to northeastern Brazil, but is now widely cultivated across the tropics.Wellknown for the cashew nut, the sweet and astringent cashew apple is also very popular, either fresh as a juice, or fermented into liquor. This tree is most noticeable at Soneva Kiri when it is fruiting in the dry season. Hevea brasiliensis (rubber tree) The climate and soil on Koh Kood provide ideal conditions for the rubber tree, which is native to South America. Before the increase in tourism, rubber plantations, along with fisheries, were one of the primary sources of income for the local population. Today, Thailand is still the world’s largest producer of natural rubber. Bauhinia spp (mountain ebony) This genus contains more than 500 species across the tropics and some of them are commonly known as orchid tree (although they are not related to orchids), mountain ebony, or in India and Pakistan as kachnar. The example found in Soneva Kiri is actually not a tree, but a small shrub. Butea monosperma (flame-of-the-forest) During the dry season, when this deciduous tree sheds its leaves, it flowers abundantly. In some areas in India, it makes up a large percentage of forest trees and when flowering, it can appear as if the forest is on fire. Its pronounced appearance may explain its popularity in folk stories and religious literature.

Mimosa pudica (shy plant) The Latin pudica means ‘shy, bashful or shrinking’. The shy plant’s compound leaves fold inwards and droop when disturbed, re-opening a few minutes later. It is presently being studied for its potential to help control a widespread tropical parasitic roundworm disease, and as a possible antidote to the venom of the monocled cobra. Sterculia lanceolata (tropical chestnut) This tree is native to Southeast Asia and has very characteristic fruits consisting of five dehiscent capsules that turn a yellow-red colour while ripening. When ripe the fruits split open on the underside and reveal several black seeds. The bark fibre is sometimes used to make bags and paper. While conducting a recent survey, over 100 different species were found, of which some 56 different genera and species and 42 different families could be identified. Many of these plants have an important ecological, economical or medicinal significance. Because of the large biodiversity present on Koh Kood and at Soneva Kiri, the survey remains a work in progress.

Soneva resorts are all located in remote areas where there is no municipal water supply. Waste water at Soneva Kiri moves through a series of filtration and oxygenation ponds that are populated with nine species of mopping plants and 80 different types of effective micro-organisms that help in the breakdown and absorption of organic matter and potentially toxic compounds. The result is a BOD level of 5 mg/l – well below the 20 mg/l maximum requirement for treated waste water. They use a sophisticated yet completely natural water filtration process, moving the waste water through a series of filtration and oxygenation ponds. The waste water is initially collected in a catchment pond. The contaminants in the water undergo aerobic dissimilation by a combination of microorganisms, sunlight and aeration. The water is then pumped into a second pond, flowing naturally into a wetland where a series of mopping plants and algae grow and absorb many of the remaining excess nutrients and potentially toxic compounds. After these three stages the water is still very rich in nutrients. It is then accumulated into a large catchment basin that contains lotus and greater duckweed. These plants are capable of absorbing large amounts of possible contaminants and excess nutrients. This final pond also contains tilapia fish that keep the vegetation under control and contribute to the release of available nutrients. By the time the water reaches the final pond, it is naturally enriched in nutrients. The

treated water is then used for irrigation and as fertilizer in the fruit and vegetable gardens. Soneva Kiri as all Soneva resorts are very proud to be 100% self-sufficient in all their water supplies. Each Soneva resort has extensive fruit and vegetable gardens that supply the resort with fresh produce. The gardens are nurtured with compost created from food waste and nutrient-rich irrigation from the water treatment ponds. Growing food on-site provides guests with the freshest possible ingredients and reduces food transportation miles and corresponding emissions dramatically. Soneva Kiri produce nearly 50% of all their required vegetable on site.

drama does recall life for poor children in India. That movie was a fairy tale, while Lion is something quite different .The story begins in 1986, where we meet five-year-old Saroo. His mother works hauling rocks, while he and his older brother, supplement the poor family's income anyway they can. Saroo is a happy kid eager to prove himself by doing anything his brother can do. But they get separated when they go off looking for work. Young Saroo falls asleep on a train taking him 1,600 kilometers away to Calcutta. It is here that Saroo becomes a tiny speck against a massive, unfamiliar world. His position is made harder as he can only speak Hindi whereas in Calcutta they speak Benghali. Covering the months when Saroo manages to survive alone in Calcutta, looking for food and narrowly escaping child abductors who pretend to be rescuers.

In his final turn in one of the roles of his career, Jackman is essentially an ex-X-Man. The year is 2029, and superhuman mutants are pretty much on the extinction list. As far as anyone knows, there have been no mutant births in a quarter-century, and those few who remain live off the grid hiding. Those remaining few mutants number precisely three. X-Men leader Charles (Patrick Stewart) has now the early forms of alzeihmers and his telepathic powers are not always within his control; his geriatric brain doesn’t function as it once did. Looking after him are Logan, now a hard-drinking limo driver and Caliban, an albino mutant with tracking abilities who handles domestic chores for the trio while sheltering himself from the daylight. The lives of this last-of-their-kind collective are by no means easy, but they count on a certain routine. Then a young girl, Laura, along with a wad of cash and the

It is from here he gets adopted and moved to Australia. Watching Saroo first encounter television and the refrigerator gives the movie its humour also. We then skip forward 20 years. Saroo has been a source of great happiness for his adoptive parents, while their second adopted son was too traumatized by the experiences of his early life ever to adjust. When Saroo goes off to Melbourne to study hotel management, he meets Lucy (Rooney Mara) and a romance blossoms. It is through Lucy that he starts tracing his roots by using newly available Google Earth Technology. Overall an amazing, uplifting movie and if you can keep a dry eye at the end scenes then you deserve a medal!

desperate final request of her caretaker, that Logan get her to Canada ASAP. National borders are a factor in this story, not only because of the asylum that Canada represents but the experiments on Laura and countless other children, and the women who bore them, in Mexico. There’s drama and humor throughout the movie with both Jackman and Stewart giving there best performance as the the characters they have played for so long. This is the Wolverine picture fans have been waiting for – with its R rating, hell is unleashed in every action scene with limbs flying everywhere but by keeping the film small and intimate unlike the CGI superhero films we expect now, for me this is the best superhero film since Christopher Nolans – The Dark Night!

just out KONG : SKULL ISLAND Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John C. Reilly, John Goodman Kong - Skull Island is set in the 1970’s and is basically mixing King Kong with The Lost World, and Apocalypse Now. This return of one of the cinema's biggest ape achieves an ideal balance between action and humor. Better than Peter Jackson's three-hour King Kong of 2005, which pretty much took two hours to hit its stride this one looks poised for potential sequels co-starring other famous monsters such as Godzillla.

just out LIFE Jake Gyllenhaal , Ryan Reynolds, Rebecca Ferguson Life is basically a creature feature that would be more enjoyable with a different release date. Life faces the prospect of emerging less than one month before Ridley Scott's new chapter in the Alien franchise. It is pretty similar in most ways where a certain creature spends most of the movie rushing from one corner of a space station to another as our heroes try to starve it of oxygen etc before the ship reaches earth and wipes out mankind etc. Sound familiar?

The director Jordan Vogt-Roberts had the crucial idea to set this Kong redo in 1973, at the moment the United States pulled out of Vietnam, and the perilous journey undertaken by this tale's small band of military explorers into unknown territory, but what awaits them is a whole lot of trouble. Skull Island is located in the Pacific Ocean and is surrounded by storms and has never been charted or found. As the war ends, Bill Randa (John Goodman) convinces the Nixon Administration to back a small expedition to try to find and map the island. A crew is ferried by about a dozen choppers that penetrate the storms to find what Skull Island has to offer. Among the members are Samuel Jackson's Lt. Colonel Packard, who's not happy that the U.S. didn't finish the job in Vietnam and brings with him his team, Tim Hiddleston's Capt. Conrad and Brie Larson as a combat photographer who all have their own agendas to pursue in a land unknown to man. In the end, though, it's not the characters people will want to see, but the monsters. This Kong, who makes his entrance a well-timed half hour in, is far bigger than any before

him and he faces fierce competition from toothsome lizards who happily take advantage of the humans on the island . Kong himself is portrayed as fearsome but also sensitive. He's the last of his species, and the bones of his family are all around the island and now he's got a new enemy in Packard, who is determined to settle his unfinished business in Vietnam by taking out Kong.

Like Alien this is an ensemble affair whose cast of characters dwindles in number over the course of the movie. Surprisingly, the best-known members of its cast are not the people left at the end. A-listers Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds register no more solidly as characters than Ariyon Bakare's Hugh Derry, the scientist who makes first contact with the alien, and soon regrets it. Derry and company are manning the International Space Station when a probe returns from Mars with soil samples. Under the microscope, Derry finds a single cell resembling life as we know it, then he brings that cell to life with some glucose. He quickly observes, as the cell grows, that the single cell seems capable of all body functions.

Unfortunately, the trusting people of Earth, have given it a name: Calvin. This is before it turns nasty!!!!

The movie wastes little time watching as this thing grows, escaping its petri dish in a gripping action scene. Before long, it has become a starfish-shaped jelly creature, and has claimed its first victim.

Sci Fi horror fans won't be too shocked by the way that plays out. A decent enough movie but is overshadowed with the new Alien movie coming out next month.

With the team trying to make it to the other side of the island where in three days they will be picked up obviously numbers in the party steadily decrease through various nasty’s on the island but with various monsters also giving Kong a good run for his money. Overall a good ,solid movie with good action sequences but some of the characters and dialogue is a bit wooden at times.

As "Calvin" grows the smarter he becomes and is adapted to opening doors and surviving airlocks. He also has developed a habit of following human blood towards his prey and also has a fondness of entering victims through there mouth rather than taking a bite (not for the queasey!). The picture struggles to find any sort of rhythm as the team get eaten up by Calvin or suffer lethal mishaps. Each dies valiantly; few enjoy a moment of glory. And then there were two - heroes whose names won't be revealed here, who face the final challenge .
