Discover your simplicity in the

Salvatore Ferragamo SS16 collection‌

S

alvatore Ferragamo SS16 collection is absolutely timeless plus modern all the way too. The reason being that in it lies an amalgamation of perfect balance, moderation and harmony all coming together to enhance the overall appeal of the collection. Also at the center of it all is the depth of pure forms which reflect clarity as a means of expression. The focus is on lines, the texture of the material to create a noble and solemn portrait, marked by a feeling of lightness and unexpected austerity. The expertise and the supreme craftsmanship are integral to the Florence Maison which are beautifully expressed in a synthesis that tries to transform the past in a modern context. 16

The vibrant and lofty silhouette features midihems and transmits a sense of vertical delicacy. The long double cotton cloaks and strapless dress with floating volumes end up in high frills. Small rounded jackets are sculptured like architectonic spaces. The unequivocal female appeal of garments that envelop and knot around the body is everpresent; bows are scattered along the profile of ample sleeves, ribbons lace-upon the back, all expressing a shy seductiveness. The classic patchwork of Salvatore Ferragamo reveals supreme bar tack creations that open tears like revelatory geometry, or graphic constructions that create large modular weaves on skirts and tops. Feathers and small ruffles unite in vertical lines on garments of impalpable liquidity; large frills follow the necklines, highlighting the shoulders. Clean lines punctuate the quest for graceful and archetypal femininity, highlighted by large pearl earrings and by necklaces in essential shapes decorated with large pearls.

You can do all this while refreshing in the ocean-front infinity edge pools. Also on offer are various free flow options from Wine, Beer and Cocktails and Happy Hour runs everyday from 5pm - 7pm buy one get one free on selected drinks. Can’t fit Sunday in then check out the Wednesdays Presidents Seafood BBQ, every Wednesday from 6pm - 9pm. The way it works is as follows, guests select the fish or shell fish they want and it is then weighed for cost. Our prices are the same as purchasing seafood at the local market however we do add on Tax and service charge. However, the most entertaining part of one’s stay at the resort revolves around a lifetime opportunity to play a highly electrifying game known as “Escape Break”. The adventure begins when you along with five of your friends are thrust into a themed game where you all have to come together and find the hidden objects. During the 60-minute non-stop combat, you all embark on a mission, uncovering the clues and solving the puzzles to win your freedom. This fun experiment is all about testing your guts when you find yourself trapped in a hostile territory. As part of the Escape Break package, there are four brainstorming games you can choose and show your valor through; Ghost Ship, Kowloon Captive, Outbreak and Relic Rush. O N E CO A S T

23

Ghost Ship: This is a haunted ghost ship where the participants have to cope with an extremely violent storm and find their way out before it’s all over and you can’t help it. Kowloon Captive: In it, you have to work on getting the politician’s daughter released from the hands of a gang who abducted her. With this huge pressure on your shoulders, you gear up in your new role as an undercover police in Hong Kong to free his daughter. It’s quite thrilling. Outbreak: In this game, your battle is with a deadly virus released by a dictator. As a government scientist employed in a British lab, you have to get your hands on the antidote in no time (one hour to say the least) if you are to save humanity. Relic Rush: You have to go in quest of a golden artifact lost somewhere within a treacherous Cambodian temple. The clock is ticking. The doors will close in one hour, should you not escape you will be trapped forever like so many before who weren’t lucky! While the adrenalin gets high thanks to this game theme, there is also a need for you to rest your body for overall wellbeing. And its “Asian Fusion Spa” is an exquisite boutique spa set on the serene shores of Lamai Beach. Here you can treat yourself to this tranquil oasis where mind, body, and spirit are restored, refreshed, and revitalized. Besides, these treatments are a fusion of traditional Asian and Western styles with an inventive, new age approach to spa therapy. From the conception to the creation of the Asian Fusion Spa everything has been thought through to offer you a complete and fulfilling escape from the chores and responsibilities of daily life. Restore, reinvigorate or just plain pamper. It’s up to you.

Great Oriental Therapy Many of the applied techniques at the Asian Fusion Spa are generated from ancient therapeutic practices where your body’s energy is restored to balance through nourishing the inner sanctuary. Here, it unblocks the flow of ‘chi’, focusing solely on the body’s Sen or Meridian Lines, utilizing ancient practices such as Chinese reflexology, Japanese Reiki, Indian Ayurvedic treatments, and Traditional Thai massage with hot herbal compress. Beach Republic is also perfect wedding and honeymoon destination. From small intimate affairs to larger than life celebrations, we help you to plan the perfect wedding in paradise and then relax while their professional team works to exceed all expectations on your special day. In addition to offering many pre-set packages and menus for your ceremony and celebration, we offer custom solutions to suit the most exotic tastes. At the end of the day, one can’t resist the experience of enjoying a high-end Single Malt Whisky and Premium Hand-Rolled Cigar in a luxurious cigar-friendly setting at Whisgars, its unique concept bar. Our Whiskies Only the highest quality Single Malt Whiskies are served. Whisgars drectly deal with select distilleries in Scotland, enabling them to obtain single cask whiskies direct from the source.

Relive your life at

If

Amatara Resort & Wellness

you are looking for a complete wellness program in the midst of blooming nature in order to recharge yourself, then Thailand is certainly the exquisite choice of destination to explore. Luxury hotel Amatara Resort & Wellness located in Phuket is rightly summoned as “the panacea” for everything you want to work on in a tranquil milieu. Providing excellent standards in the area of holistic wellbeing, it’s set to become the new benchmark for an unsurpassed wellness experience in the serene surrounding of Cape Panwa with integrative health retreats through magnificent Thai hospitality accommodated in beautiful sea view pool villas & suites. Blending together traditional Turkish and Moroccan bathing practices with the wisdom and gentleness of authentic Thai spa healing arts, Amatara Resort & Wellness has launched the world's first luxury Thai Hammam at its center. Incorporating thermal therapeutic treatments, the Thai Hammam Experience at Amatara offers an amazing journey that combines the sensations of pampering, soaking, exfoliating, cleansing, deep massage and calming rejuvenation. It has created a stunning architectural design to deliver its Thai Hammam programs, a mix of traditional Turkish and Moroccan influences with modern Asian style and luxurious elegance. The Thai elements of the Hammam are completely built around a gentleness and a sense of wisdom both reflected in the cascading mosaics, modern and clean geometry, and gold-colored Turkish fittings and accompaniments. It’s a luxurious and relaxing ritual that is solely aimed at refreshing one’s heart and soul and therefore this outstanding experience is now included with any wellness package stay at Amatara Resort & Wellness. The Thai Hammam Experience at Amatara starts with a traditional sauna followed by a waterfall or jet blast rinse to cool down the body

temperature. Then, the guest will be escorted into a Thai herbal steam room to soften the skin and relax the muscles. Once the skin is softened, the guest immerses in a full body massage and exfoliation atop an internally warmed stone bed. More or less, the Thai Hammam massage is a deluxe combination of 100% organic natural products and therapeutic massage with a strong Thai influence. The next step in the journey is a deeply soothing, healing and detoxifying thermal mud bath. The body is completely covered with therapeutic mud while the guest relaxes on an internally heated stone bench. The pores of the skin are open from the heat of the mud room and the previous stages of the Hammam process, and the dead skin removed, allowing the minerals of the mud to be absorbed into the body via the skin. This is not only wonderfully detoxifying and soothing for the skin but also it helps reduce inflammation in the body, thus reducing aches, pains and muscle stiffness. After several minutes, a gentle steam infuses the mud room, softening the mud in order to be easily rinsed off. Then, the guests are taken to rest in a soothing Himalayan Salt cave relaxation zone. Negative ions released into the air of the salt room are akin to those of the fresh ocean air, and the salt elements are particularly beneficial for the respiratory system. The Thai Hammam Experience ends with Amatara’s signature massage for ultimate relaxation. This absolute wellbeing is sustained by eating what’s good for the body and mind. At Amatara’s "The Retreat", this is well taken care of. It’s a beautiful restaurant outlet dedicated to serving healthy and nutritious food and beverages. Previously known as "The Club", the newly revamped venue “The Retreat” better harmonizes the resort’s overall F&B offering with its high quality spa and luxury wellness programs and facilities.

No wonder its wellness cuisine concept is deeply rooted in ancient traditions, making it a peaceful sanctuary to embrace authentic healing and living foods. The menu is based on local Thai cultural inspiration, which encourages the nurturing of harmony with spirit, the environment and to re-connect with one another. In fact, Amatara’s integrated mind, body and spirit approach to wellness and whole food supports an organic healing process to naturally heal and improve the body and state of wellbeing; a key part of this is of course superb nutrition.

Blugirl’s SS16 campaign

A story about women’s unrestrained willingness to live life freely…

O N E CO A S T

29

Women are angels of beauty. And when it’s blended with liberating power, their personality becomes even more influential and irresistible. In its Blugirl SS16 advertising campaign, Blumarine, one of the famous Italian fashion houses, has showcased a woman’s Joie de Vivre. She thinks of fashion as a game in order to reveal the magic of femininity seductively. For the magnificent campaign as it is by all standards, the model Charlotte Cardin was taken on board to do justice to the theme of it. She takes us on a young Jane Birkin’s journey as she goes out in search of a new feminine aesthetic expressed with a more personal and less blatant approach. The use of bright colors brings to life dresses, blouses and trousers, becoming the absolute protagonists of the images shot at the Universal Studios in Hollywood. 30

Another big name in the world of fashion is Josep Font, founder and creative director of Delpozo. Under his auspices, there is a certain definition for each dress designed by him. He believes in making elegant dresses for today’s contemporary women. He turns his readyto-wear collections into scintillating couture with artisanal skills and intricate embroideries. Moreover, the mirage of colors being poured generously on the clothes along with absolute exposure of volume and silhouette is the winning combination to say the least. It’s no different when he presented his FW16 collection with a bang. He wanted to shine light on the power of opposites to attract one another; the emotional and the rational, the Victorian and the futurist, the romantic and the dark. Inspired by the sci-fi movie “Metropolis”, the collection is seen overflowing with geometry and cool steel. More often than not, Josep returns to nature to come up with the best ideas and one of them is clearly apparent in the collection everybody is raving about. He has extracted bits from the digital illustrations of Daria Petrilli (whose contemporary work often focuses on nature’s power which can be both serene yet unsettling) to portray throughout the collection. All in all, the dresses are architecturally magnificent.

Perfectly Imperfect T

here are some things we could argue that are simply perfect. A sunset is perfect or snuggled around a cosy fire, while looking up at the night sky, mesmerised by the beauty of the vast, expansive universe is perfect. You wouldn’t sit there and think to yourself, “I wish I could change the orange hues of that sunset” or “the night sky would look more beautiful with far less stars.” These experiences are perfectly perfect. Yet, one can hardly argue, that no matter how much we have, that new car, the right zip code, or the job we always wanted — that something in the back of our mind, niggles, paces, and is never fully settled. Imperfection, seems to cling to the human experience. We can have everything we want, but still feel we don't have everything we need. But as spiritual teacher Pema Chodron reminds us, “You want it your own way. You’d just like to have a little peace; you’d like to have a little happiness, you know, just “gimme a break!” But the more you think that way, the more you try to get life to come out so that it will always suit you, the more your fear of other people and what’s outside your room grows.” My first experience of never being good enough came as a child. Nothing I ever did seemed to be good enough either for my mom, or the teachers at my school. Constantly, over and over, I was told, this is not good enough, you can do better. While I acknowledge that in some twisted way this was meant to inspire me to become more, I always felt that it left me with a battered self-esteem. The more I was asked to do things just right, the less I wanted to do them. 40

O N E CO A S T

body&mindmindful lifestyle You see, now in my 40’s I have come to realise that not only is life imperfect, it is that very imperfection that makes life so perfect. What I should have been taught growing up was not to be perfect, but rather how to dance with imperfection. Not only is the obsession with getting things just right a handicap to getting things right — our ancient brain, the lizard in all of us doesn’t help either. The lizard brain, the amygdala, says, “Don't change, don’t achieve and don’t take risk, stay within your comfort zone, stay within what seems to be perfect, stay with what you have been told is right.” While the lizard brain may be trying to keep us safe, it is also the part of the brain that stops us dancing with imperfection. The truth is, living isn’t safe. Safe, while safe, is boring, its where nothing creative and innovative happens. Safe keeps you where you are, stops you from where you want to go, but paradoxically makes you feel that who and what you are is never good enough. Understanding the perfection of imperfection is awakening to the truth that as Brene Brown in her book The Gifts of Imperfection, notes, “Let go of who you think you're supposed to be and embrace who you are.” As Pema Chodron reminds us, “There is something aggressive about that approach to life, trying to flatten out all the rough spots and imperfections into a nice smooth ride.” I have come to realise and I am certain you have too, that life isn’t a smooth ride. But those rough spots in life are an invitation to be simply who you are. When you begin the journey of accepting yourself, you become courageous, you no longer run from those aspects of yourself that you do not like, but begin to realise that within your neurosis, lies your wisdom. Said another way, to chuck out your neurosis, you throw out your wisdom, because they are made of the same material. This is of course hard to see, in a world that has defined perfection for us, and then tells us that to not be perfect as it is defined is to be considered mad. But being mad, being imperfect may be the only true perfection that exists in this life. Sanity then, may be the very act of excepting who you are, exactly as you are.

Guard yourself against illnesses through

VitaDrips By Nagmani

At a time when things are getting too complicated and affecting our well-being in one way or the another, it would be wise to take pre-emptive measures to keep health problems at bay. With this concern in mind, Acaena and Mahi came up with a brilliant plan to address it. They set up “The Elixir Clinic” in order to make a difference in people’s lives. It’s no wonder that the recipients of their vitamin infusions are feeling great. In an exclusive interview with One Coast, we sat down with them to find out what prompted them to launch this program, how safe the procedure is and much more.

body&mindwellness

How did the idea of "The Elixir Clinic" come about in the first place? We met in London while working as practitioners in the medical district of the city, Harley Street. We liked each other’s work style instantly and after months of working together we had developed a great bond and friendship but most importantly we realized just how well we complimented each other in many ways. After a night out together discussing our mutual satisfaction with one another Acaena came up with the idea that we should set up a business together. And of course it didn’t take long for Mahi to say yes and be part of it. What exactly is at the heart of it? They are simply well-being infusions – you don’t need to be sick to have them. It’s to avoid getting sick, improve quality of life and avoid future diseases. Most of us are stressed, we don’t have a proper diet and our bodies cannot absorb all of the nutrients they need or the food that we eat doesn’t contain the proper vitamins and minerals, so the infusions give your body the boost that it needs to function properly. The infusions give a mix of all of the essential vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and Amino acids to help the body function well. What health issues are mostly treated with the help of this program? It really depends on what you want to achieve. We always have one to one consultations with our clients before they have the infusion. We go through all of their medical history and they tell us their main concerns and needs and what they want to improve. Depending on their needs we then advise them of one thing or another, so the frequency of treatments for each person is completely different. Our IM boosters take just seconds while the IV VitaDrips take 30–60mins. Many patients begin to feel the effects during the IV therapy, which then continues over the following hours and days. For visible results we always advise our patients to have an average of six infusions first in order to get the real benefit of it and then of course they can come whenever they need a boost. How successful has it been since it began especially in the Middle East? The vitamin infusions have been present in the American and European market for over 30 years and have a great reputation and feedback from everyone who has tried it since it’s natural and safe. We have been practicing in London for little over four years and were offered to bring the treatments to the UAE and partner up with very reputable groups (Cosmesurge and Emirates Hospital) and we did. It’s been going very well so far and people in this region are loving the treatment for the great amount of benefits it has specially on hydration.

How safe is the procedure while these drips being injected into the skin? The procedure is very safe. The substances used in VitaDrips are pure vitamins, minerals and amino acids, these are all water-soluble and plant-based. Water soluble vitamins easily get through your bloodstream and reach your organs which, in turn, takes what is needed to function properly. Which infusion is mostly sought-after among women here? We must say that most of our clients do the VIP Elixir, which we either tailor to the specifications of our clients’ needs, or we tailor it to support the overall wellness of our clients. The other popular VitaDrip is the Youthful Beauty, which targets skin, hair and nails. Who are your regular clients from London to the UAE? We have an extensive range of clientele; ranging between the sportsmen trying to boost their energy levels and repair the tissues, healthy women who just want to keep fit and ward off any illness while making sure their skin stays fresh with a glow, and health conscious men who are incredibly fit but also understand that a vitamin boost can keep their bodies functioning its optimum. What more can we expect from "The Elixir Clinic" in the coming months or years? In the future, we will certainly like to grow and make our presence felt in countries and areas that we feel people will benefit tremendously from our services. Watch this space as we may be in a country near you soon. You have also built a reputation for providing these services to your customers in the confines of their home. What led to it? At Elixir, we understand the need for some clients to have the VitaDrip in the comfort of their own home or office. Therefore, we offer home service visits in Dubai only with an extra charge and we come fully prepared with our medical equipment and your custom made vitamin infusions prepared to be given at their convenient time and place. Marie-Elisabeth in her own words, has found peace on Samui because of her hugely demanding job and has discovered that perfect quiet spot to be able to completely relax and recharge those batteries. Natural progression has evolved into “Hip Horizons where Marie-Elisabeth and her husband, Guido Balanzino, now also offer Holidays Retreats for those seeking that extra special and seclusive break.

- We have a global network of contacts for all that you might need or expect.

What were your impressions when you first visited Samui? When I first arrived on Samui I thought “yes! this is Thailand”, exactly as I had imagined it. An island full of Palm and Coconut trees, so lush and green, surrounded by turquoise sea with the sparkles of a million diamonds, white silky sandy beaches, Thai food that tickles all the senses of the palate, daily interactions with hard working locals selling all kinds of food and exotic souvenirs. There is so much variety! I met people who are still settled and faithful to Samui, Thai and “farangs” from many different nationalities who became friends over the years.

Obvious to us is your love and enthusiasm for life, where do you find your power and your energy? Myself (with the need for the occasional reminder), my husband in both married life and work, loving parents and true friends.

You’ve travelled the world extensively with your career and organized events from the MTV EMA to Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday party in Hyde Park London, have you come across anywhere else that has that wonderful Samui appeal? Simply put no. “Samui is our home away from home”, we don’t work here but given the chance we would jump at the opportunity of working on a music project and with a team who share the same dream as us of putting on a great and big outdoors event amidst the palm trees high up on a mountain where the music was so good that one would recount the experience to say “I was there”.

If we’re challenged to advise on a destination, activities that we haven’t got contacts for, we will pull strings, make the calls, to find the right connection to fulfill the request. It’s about the satisfaction of our clients and being able to match their expectations.

Music gives me so much energy. From Pop to Heavy Metal to Rap to Hip Hop to House, to Jazz Samba, to Dance to Trance…. If the music is good, if it conveys emotion that I relate to or not but I see others enjoy, then I’m game! I will often self practice yoga in the production hotel room, it gives me clarity and power to face a demanding day ahead. By nature I am very positive and “solare” (sunny) as my husband says.

We all work really hard, we all work under pressure, we all need to disconnect.

If there was one thing you would be able to change about Samui what would that be? Regulate the situation of the stray dogs and cats. Sadly there are a lot of abandoned dogs and some badly taken care of. It breaks my heart to see this situation, there are some “non profit” organisations and charities trying to do something about it but unfortunately it’s not enough. As a pretty laid back Leo, it takes a lot to ruffle my feathers. I don’t like the word “NO” and I thrive on challenges.

We show them the path of where and how to move around, most of it based on our own experiences and from close people around us. - We have experienced fixers and work with professionals such as concierge companies when required.

My husband pushes me, challenges and has empowered me over the years, he’s fearless and his moral grounds are unwavering. Powerful and strong

44

O N E CO A S T

Putting work aside if you’ve some free time what would you like to be doing? - If Hip Horizons, the Fairline Targa 52 sports cruiser is not booked on that day, then we would go to Angthong National Marine Park. - I enjoy married life and so for example I would go on a long walk on the beach with my husband and our gorgeous dog “Gizmo,” at low tide for sunset. - Reach the next level with Muay Thai, I started recently and practice on the bag is proving challenging. - I would participate in a clean up the beach day. - Is it October? One of my favourite times of year to go olive picking at my husband’s family home in Europe. - Read a book.

Would your husband Guido have the same preference? Yes he would. We both like Thai and healthy food.

I take pride in my work and my work colleagues, the support system of those close to me is also the power that keeps me going. I love the thrill of hard work paying off when the team enjoyed the ride, witnessing a great performance, crowds going nuts, etc... One of my mentors used to tell me “get off coms and take 5 to go watch the rehearsal, I’ll cover for you”. I do it to this day, keeping the radio on though, It’s such a treat to hear some of the best live artists and bands on the planet rehearse in an empty venue. I’ve had goose bumps and those 5 or 10 minutes will revive the drive to carry on as show day looms and the pressure is building.

Hip Horizons services range from giving tips about places to sharing addresses of hidden and local treasures. The step up is when clients turn to us to book their holiday. We cover many countries and the type of places range from a privately owned estate in Mexico, a villa in the Caribbean, a farmhouse in Tuscany, a finca in Ibiza, and of course, closest to our hearts and our second home, a hotel or a villa on Koh Samui. It’s extremely rewarding to get it right.

My father is a rock too, he believes in me and that’s given me the confidence to “just go for it”, much like him.Around the time I had to choose what I wanted to study at university he told me: “you can do whatever you want in life but you have to be the best”. I like to think that I have inherited some of my parents’ best qualities. I also get from my mother, a very talented painter, her relentlessness: I have to finish what I started otherwise I cannot live with myself.

Tonight you are invited out to dinner in your favourite restaurant, where are you going? And what would you eat? That’s tough as depends on the mood but I would go for authentic local Thai food. 1. “Ban Som Tam” in Nathon: Som Tam Jey (vegetarian) and Yam Pla Duk Fu (deep fried cat fish). 2. “Relax Sunset” in Bang Por: cucumber Som Tam and all three types of soft shell crab.

Hip Horizons is your new business venture and of course you can’t divulge your clients but could you tell us a little about some of the services you are offering? Guido and I, both freelancers complement each other’s qualities, we have a symbiotic relation so we decided in 2010 to create a partnership under one umbrella: Hip Horizons, consultants to people who work in the same industry as us; music and events. We are not “elitist” either so the door is always open for anyone to approach us. Whilst working, during short coffee breaks, it happened that people were turning to us for advice to plan their downtime or holidays. It was a good and easier starting point to suggest places and give recommendations to those we have worked with over the years. The trust is there and they have already experienced the results of our organisational skills, so it’s also reassuring.

qualities that I admire and I strive for. He’s extremely nurturing and consistent too. Be straight, stand your ground and stand by what is right, what is good for you and your loved ones.

What really makes you call Thailand or Samui home? It starts as the plane makes its descent to the runway and every time I think to myself or we say out loud “aah we’re home”. We moved from the concrete jungle to a tropical jungle by choice. Samui offers a great quality of life: it has the infrastructure of a city on an island. We built a life here over the years so with good friends, lot’s of local markets, huge choice of restaurants, good nightlife, great weather, beautiful beaches… There is a great sense of freedom in living in Samui. We feel privileged to be able to live and split the year in both Europe and Samui.

Regattas Asia The Sailing Experts One Coast meets Kae Wattana, Managing Director of Regattas Asia, Owner of Samui Regatta and Simon James, Race Director, to find out what led them to establish Samui Regatta and what is in store for the future. 50

O N E CO A S T

focusabout them professional International Race Officer, accredited by World Sailing – the sport's governing body – and overseas all on-water race management for our own events, and because of his proficient and professional reputation he now travels extensively throughout Asia and provides services to many other sailing events throughout the region, running their on-water sailing programmes too. He has recently been involved with the Asian Games and a number of World Championships. I focus more on the shoreside activities which are diversified. We have a core team and add extra team members as the event dictates, so essentially the team is scalable and it’s my job to run the team and make sure all our events run smoothly, that the participants have a great time and the sponsors and partners get the ROI they’re looking for. When did the concept of “Samui Regatta” come about and what motivated you both to start it? Kae: The first Samui Regatta was held in 2002, and it has been held every year since. Regattas Asia are not the founders of the event. It was started by a group of local business people and sailors from the Gulf of Thailand who wanted to host an international sailing event in Samui and showcase the island’s beauty to the world. Simon has been involved with race management of the event right from the start and in 2012 my company, Regattas Asia, took over the reins of the regatta and have owned and operated it fully ever since. What’s the primary goal of this grand event on the whole? Simon: The initial goal was to showcase Samui and the great sailing conditions in the Gulf of Thailand, and the regatta has been very successful in making it happen. The goals of the event remain very much the same 15 years on, and our four key objectives are: • Increase tourists to the island of Samui. • Increase awareness and participation in water sports in Asia. • Establish Samui as a leading sailing destination. • Support youth education and sporting activities on the island.

with quiet corners of tropical tranquility, and this is what makes the island so special. The people are friendly and helpful. I have visited Samui many times long before I was involved in the regatta and whether I was visiting or working with the Samui community, like now, the people and businesses are always extremely friendly and professional. How bigger has it become in size especially in terms of creating a lot of buzz in Asia and even beyond? Simon: The regatta continues to grow in many ways. The racing fleet is the best you can find anywhere in Asia. There is something special about the island and the regatta that continues to attract Asia's very best sailors and yachts each year. The regatta also continues to grow in terms of awareness. More and more people around the world hear about the regatta and contact us. From the US to New Zealand, UK to Australia, South Africa, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and so many other countries, people have heard about it and sailed in the event. The word-of-mouth, global media coverage and social media continue to promote Samui and water sports on the island all over the world. We’re very proud of this.

Why did you choose Koh Samui for this sort of thing? Simon: Thailand is famous for its great sailing, water sports in general, and great regattas. It was only natural that Samui should host a world-class international sailing event, and 15 years ago that dream was realized. Starting with just 11 boats, mainly made up of beach catamarans, the event has gained a reputation for offering excellent hospitality and competitive sailing. The fleet has now grown into one of the most competitive ones in Asia and with its central location, Samui Regatta has established itself as the perfect location for the final event of the prestigious Asian Yachting Grand Prix championship, a series of 12 5-star racing events held throughout Asia.

What are the major highlights of any yachting event organized? Simon: The Samui Regatta's strength or uniqueness, if you like, is the quality of the fleet. It’s simply worldclass. Other events may have different strengths, but at the end of the day we have to listen to the sailors, who are our customers, and take on board their feedback and respond to that. The same goes for sponsors and event partners, and of course the Samui business community. The regatta works with many different people and businesses and we do our best to ensure the relationships we have built over the years continue to foster and develop, and we bring in new businesses and people to enjoy this great event and the island of Samui.

What do you love the most about Koh Samui personally? Kae: I’m from the south of Thailand and for me it's the sea, beauty and the people that make the south so special, and Samui and Surat Thani have all these assets. Samui is picture perfect and combines both a world-class international tourism destination which welcomes people from all over the world,

What do you both specialize in? Please explain. Kae: Regattas Asia was established in 2001, when Simon was based in Thailand with Sunsail, and has over 15 years of experience in organizing leading marine events in Asia. Regattas Asia has become a prominent player in Asia's regattas industry, with an innovative approach to the management of major sailing events in the region. Simon is a

What criteria do you have in place every participating crew has to go through in order to make it to the sailing race? Simon: There are no such criteria for crew. The crew are the responsibility of each boat's skipper. We use boat criteria to determine how boats are separated into different classes. This is done to ensure boats are racing against similar boats, making it fun and fair for all in each class. Do you have themes each season for activities taking place onshore? If so, then what’s the one this year? No. What draws the attention of sailors to Samui Regatta compared to other such events organized elsewhere in the world? Simon: Warm, tropical sailing and great winds. Samui Regatta has a reputation for delivering good winds and ideal sailing conditions. This, combined with the onshore programme, a unique beachfront location and island hospitality, is what makes Samui Regatta attractive to sailors from around the world. To what extent have people in Asia become obsessed with water sports now? Simon: Interest and participation in water sports has definitely grown. This isn't limited to sailing but is true of all water sports. Asia offers some great destinations for water sports and this has seen more international water sports events come to the region which in turn has propelled their popularity among local residents. Water sports in Asia right now is riding a wave, literally. What new plans are on the horizon? Kae: Our focus is to continue to build and improve the events we have, which includes Samui Regatta and the Bay Regatta which is a unique four day traveling regatta that starts in Phuket, sails to Phang Nga, Krabi and then finishes back in Phuket. Our goal is to continue to improve these events, promote the host destinations and grow sailing and water sports in general in Thailand and around the region. We just enjoy what we do.

bmwr5 Recollect your biking days with

80 years ago, BMW presented the BMW R 5 to the international public an exciting new technological development that was to influence motorcycle construction right through to the 1950s. Inspired by the 500 cc factory racing machine of 1935, it was one of the groundbreaking sports motorbikes of the late 1930s with its newly designed light frame. To mark the 80th anniversary of the BMW R 5, BMW Motorrad honored this icon at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2016 with a special model: the BMW R 5 Hommage. The BMW R 5 Hommage translates the essence of motorcycling into the modern era, combining the world of historical motorcycle design with the modern world of custom bikes. “At its debut, the R 5 was not only a masterpiece of engineering, the clarity of its lines and the elegance of its proportions also made it stand out clearly from the masses. To this day, the R 5 remains one of the most aesthetically appealing motorcycles in BMW history in my view,” says Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design BMW Motorrad. “In my opinion, its fascinating and unique beauty lies in its sheer simplicity,” adds Ola Stenegard, Head of Vehicle Design and Creative Director Heritage BMW Motorrad. “In today’s world it is very simple to keep it complicated, but very complicated to keep it simple. And the BMW R 5 captures the very essence of a motorcycle. Our aim was to transport its clarity and elegant aesthetic appeal to the modern era - creating a respectful combination of old-school and high-tech with a dash of high performance.” Vintage meets custom The BMW R 5 Hommage shows just how well the world of historical motorcycles and the custom scene harmonise. At the core there is an original 500 cc Two-cylinder engine provided by motorcycle enthusiast Sebastian Gutsch. This boxer engine was damaged in a race and provided the starting point for creating the BMW R 5 Hommage. As befits a custom bike, the homage bike was elaborately hand-crafted from scratch. Ronny and Benny Noren were called upon to produce the parts according to the specifications of the BMW Motorrad Design Team: the two brothers have been building tailor-made customer bikes for more than 30 years.

Historical core The Two-cylinder 4-stroke boxer engine of the R 5 was completely newly designed at the time and had an output of 24 bhp at 5,500 rpm. The valve drive was taken care of by two camshafts powered by a timing chain. Thanks to the likewise newly designed frame made of electrically welded oval tubing, the light R 5 reached a top speed of 135 km/h, making it almost as fast as R 17 with 33 bhp 750 cc – which is one of the reasons it was so frequently used for racing, just like the engine selected for the BMW R 5 Hommage, which was damaged during a race. For the homage bike, numerous components such as the valve cover and the breastplate of the boxer engine were machined from billet aluminium based on sketches: they give the historical core a dash of modern flair. A modern interpretation of historical details A particularly defining feature in terms of the appearance of the original R 5 was the telescopic fork - new at the time - whose characteristic fork covers were aerodynamically shaped at the level of the headlamp. The BMW R 5 Hommage invokes this element and interprets it in modern style based on the custom made fork. The leading edge of the forkcovers echoes the “crease” on the breastplate and valve covers with a suggested interpretation of the typical “R 5 rib”. The brake and clutch levers activated from the bar-end likewise blend the past with state-of-the-art technology: these custom-made components combine the look of historical reversed levers with the adjustment options of modern controls. Exquisite custom craftsmanship: supercharger, exhaustpipes and suspension The heart of the BMW R 5 rests within the minimalist proportions of the homage bike. The technical highlight of the engine is the specially developed supercharger, which in the BMW R 5 Hommage now significantly boosts the output of the original 500 cc power unit of 26 bhp to achieve a contemporary accurate level. A completely newly built stainless steel exhaust system ensures that this increase in power is appropriately reflected in terms of sound. Other contemporary accents are provided by the new rear wheel suspension, the modern piston brake system and the elaborately designed front and rear wheel hub. The latter combines the brake system and spoke mount in a single formal unit - a detailed reflection of the minimalistic concept embodied by the BMW R 5 Hommage.

It’s because of the strong relationship between Aston Martin and the James Bond character that has symbolized the brand for decades. And now its passion for pushing the envelope has created another milestone — the unveiling of the new DB11 which the company recently launched at the 86th International Geneva Motor Show under its ‘Second Century’ plan. Make no mistake about the fact that DB11 is the bold new figurehead of the illustrious ‘DB’ bloodline and an authentic, dynamic sporting GT in the finest Aston Martin tradition.

The new DB11 reflects a fresh and distinctive design language, pioneering aerodynamics and is powered by a potent new in-house designed 5.2-litre twin-turbo charged V12 engine. Built upon a new lighter, stronger, and more space efficient bonded aluminium structure, it’s the most powerful, most efficient and most dynamically gifted DB model in Aston Martin’s history. As such, it’s the most significant new Aston Martin since the introduction of the DB9 back in 2003. The arrival of DB11 re-imagines the relationship between form and function with a series of fresh design signatures. Foremost amongst these are things such as the front-hinging clamshell bonnet, distinctive LED headlights and accentuated lines of the iconic Aston Martin grille. The profile is equally dramatic, thanks to the roof strakes that flow uninterrupted from A-pillar to C-pillar. The clean lines continue at the rear, with a sloping deck lid that smoothly blends into boldly sculpted tail-lights to create a new and unmistakable graphic. Like every Aston Martin, the heart of the DB11 is found beneath the bonnet, though unlike any Aston Martin before it, the DB11’s heart is a 5.2-litre twin-turbocharged V12. Designed in-house this new engine develops 608PS1 (600BHP1) and 700Nm1 of torque, making DB11 the most powerful production DB model ever. Naturally, it’s the most dynamic and most accelerative too, with a top speed of 200mph1 and a 0-62mph time of just 3.9sec1. To exploit the advantages of its new body structure and harness the immense performance of the new twin-turbo V12 engine, the DB11’s chassis, suspension, steering and electronics have been re-imagined and key new technologies embraced. Multiple driver-selectable dynamic modes - GT, Sport and Sport Plus - progressively intensify the response of the engine, 8-speed automatic ZF transmission together with the new electric power steering and Torque Vectoring by braking while increasing the firmness of the adaptive damping for a greater sense of agility. The result is a driving experience that combines exemplary ride comfort and true sports car agility, for an extraordinary breadth of dynamic capability.

Jimmy Choo’s Spring Summer 2016 campaign is a great mix of modernity, confidence and glamour. It focuses on building a distinctive visual identity for the brand that will evolve from season to season. As Sandra Choi, Creative Director says, "I wanted the new campaign to illustrate the Jimmy Choo woman of today; she has a natural radiance and allure that comes from being confident and self-assured. For the women’s campaign, the imagery captures the modern woman – she is confident with a laidback approach to glamour that emanates from her self-assurance and unequivocal personal sense of style.” 66 66

Beat the Heat

With the mercury levels rising above 40°C and no sign of it dropping in the recent future, most people prefer hibernating indoors during the summer months with air-conditioners on full blast, rather than getting burnt under the merciless rays of the UAE sun. It’s certainly not everyone’s cup of tea basking on Jumeirah Beach, enjoying amusement parks or picnicking under palm trees. Indoors doesn’t have to mean boring however, and here in Dubai we’ve certainly no shortage of adventurous options for fun sans sun. At One Coast Magazine, we put away the board shorts and explored some of the most exciting things you can do inside this summer without losing your cool.

Art in Style Choosing an interior design style and color palette can be a daunting task, and all too often, choosing art for the space comes as an after thought. The focus is commonly on the sofa and floor rug and colour of the walls, leaving us with the difficult task of finding art work to suit the space. Some might argue that any piece of art you really love fits into any interior space, which can be true, but can also leave you with an unwanted eccentric look that lacks flow and forethought. Deciding on your art pieces first can help to determine the direction, design and colour scheme to give the space a cohesive look – but, before you challenge this thinking, it doesn’t mean you have to match every cushion and colour with the art pieces you have selected! Choosing your art work first can assist with determining the look for your space and allows you to draw from the colour palette in the art work to make it a focal point in the room.

Utilising a range of different techniques, Art can be anything from subtle texture to an eye catching and dominant work of art to multiple framed pieces creating a feature wall and everything in between to develop a harmonious interior space. Art really is in the eye of the beholder!

Villa Turquoise 88

O N E CO A S T

Here are some tips to help with designing your interiors with Art:

Villa Turquoise

Instant Colour and Texture Even an all white piece of art will add texture and colour and can set the tone for the design of your space. Other pieces may offer a variety of colours you can draw from to incorporate into your décor. You can get great impact in your interiors by choosing a dominant colour from a piece of art and highlighting it in a subtle manner - without buying in to the ‘colour pop’ fad! This doesn’t mean every soft furnishing or decorative item needs to be this colour. Draw it in tastefully and incorporate other textures and colours to create a natural and welcoming appeal. The texture and colour you incorporate in your art selections can help add much needed visual weight to your interiors, which assist with determining the tone of the room and how it feels.

Villa Michaela

Think Outside the Frame ‘Art’ isn’t just about paintings, drawings, prints or other framed pieces to hang on your wall. Textiles, sculptures, metals, ceramics or any other decorative pieces can be art and will add texture, colour, tone and interest to your interiors. Make a Statement One of the most basic principals of interior design is that every room needs a focal point, or a single design element that will instantly draw the eye into the space and give the viewer a sense of what to expect. Of course, a magnificent piece of wall art could easily fulfill this position in any bedroom, living space or outdoor area, but that ‘masterpiece’ isn’t always so easy to find, or within our budget! Creating a gallery wall is a contemporary way to make the most of photographs, art works or even textiles you have gathered on your travels to reflect who you are and offer a sense of homeliness to a room. Try using different frames in various sizes that suit the piece to create an eclectic, yet cohesive and interesting design. Utilise a variety of artistic items throughout your home to create interest. Sculptures, potted plants and hanging textiles can add to a rooms appeal can without relying entirely on framed art. The Finishing Effect We have all seen the house with all white walls, adequate furniture, but nothing artistic to give the place a personality. These houses generally don’t have entertaining appeal or offer the owner or visitors that feeling of home and a space they want to be in. This often comes down to the finishing touches of Art, colour and adding a little bit of ‘you’ to the space. While everyone won’t love every piece of art you own and cherish, the aim should be to find a piece that reflects your style, makes you happy and should be interesting and unique for anyone visiting. words by Natalie Stevenson Photo credit: www.lesleyfisherphotography.com

Nourah Al Faisal’s fine jewelry is nothing but

‘Wow’ By Nagmani

96

O N E CO A S T

fashioninterview

While many countries in the Arab world boast having their own club of fine jewelry designers with bigger influence regionally as well as internationally. There is one place, Saudi Arabia, where anything like this was almost unheard of. But the reality today speaks otherwise, prompting everybody to think straight away that things have changed for the better here. In fact, it has thanks to the one and only Saudi-born Paris-based haute couture jewelry designer Nourah Al Faisal who went on to launch her own scintillating brand “Nuun” in 2014. Ever since, her beautiful creations have grabbed the global jewelry seekers’ attention in a big way, bringing in more clientele. In an exclusive interview with One Coast Magazine, we sat down with her to find out what led her to become a jewelry designer, what it entails for her and much more. Nourah’s fixation with jewelry happened very early on although she has always loved the essence of design in all its forms. As a child, she enjoyed visiting the high-end jewelry shops located at London’s Bond Street and Paris’s Place Vendôme with her mother. “I was particularly captivated by the precious metals, the gems, how they’re designed to fit and enhance the human body, and how they express the personality of the people who wear them. I find it nothing but fascinating,” she says. The intuitive drive to do something worthy has been the sole guiding factor throughout her career. That’s why she proudly portrays herself as a self-taught jewelry designer. After graduating from university, she apprenticed in a famous high jewelry shop called “Georland” in Paris learning the nuts and bolts of designing couture jewelry. “This was all I did and from then onwards went on to make commissioned pieces for over 15 years before finally setting up my “Nuun” empire,” she says. Nuun jewels embody Nourah’s personal aesthetics, heavily influenced by her culture and heritage. But they’re also influenced by everything else she was exposed to while growing up and the many novelties and beauties she often comes across when she travels. She shared with us proof of it by showing one of her incredibly popular creations “BANAJIR” bangles whose distinctive pattern was purely reflective of a traditional geometric pattern often found on the doorways of Saudi houses.

Banajir BANGLES OJBD

In the jewelry industry, there are several brands that are sheerly known for making signature pieces. But for some this seems a bit weird and don’t buy into it at all. So is the case with Nourah who doesn’t support the idea of designing signature pieces. “I feel that every designer is constantly evolving in their own way but having said that the TUWAIQ collection which we launched lately is very popular,” she points out. “TUWAIQ is an area just outside Riyadh, where I grew up; it's a beautiful mountain ridge, very graphic. This collection reflects the beauty of the terrain. It has inspired some of my favorite pieces so far.”

In any creative profession one works, what matters most is the presence of his or her overwhelming inventiveness. Based on this crucial factor, Nourah tries to stay true to her own style as much as possible. Likewise, the quality of the materials and of the craftsmanship also matters to her a great deal. She attaches a lot of importance to quality and beauty, but also to sustainability. These are the major characteristics setting her designs apart from the rest. “I want to work with people, suppliers or workshops, who share the same values. For instance, I believe it’s important to choose gemstone suppliers who are respectful of both local communities and nature. Our Wollo Opals are supplied by Opalinda and they do a wonderful job supporting and working with local mining communities in Ethiopia,” she says. She looks up to the wonders of nature, architecture, or even music for inspiration. In fact, it could be anything that catches her eyes and her imagination. “The new Ginkgo Ombre earrings, rings and cuffs are a tribute to the magnificent tree,” she says. When it comes to what women look for in jewelry they purchase, Nourah thinks that it mainly depends on the type of jewelry and the occasion. “I believe that women by and large are drawn to beauty; they go for jewelry pieces that can express their personalities and make them feel special,” she says. “I try to design pieces that I would want to wear myself. Personally, I’ve always believed in quality over quantity. I love quality, the highest quality.” In order to make each piece fit perfectly, she says she must be aware of how a bracelet will rest on the arm or a necklace around the neck. “They need to be not only beautiful but comfortable. Keeping this in mind, it’s essential to visualize what the piece will look and feel like before it’s made.” So she sticks to a simple practice in relation to her overall design mantra. “I try to simplify as much as possible. I’m not a minimalist by rote, but I don't like overly complicated designs either,” Al Faisal says. Sourcing the precious stones is also a very delicate process that she performs with utmost discipline. “I’m often very specific when I’m looking for gemstones. There are a few people I’ve been working with for many years: they know me and they understand the type and the quality of stones I’m looking for,” she says.

GINKGO OMBRE CUFF

O N E CO A S T

Showcasing one’s creations in highprofile exhibitions is equally important to take care of as Al Faisal explains, “It’s important to be able to introduce what I do to a wider audience. Exhibiting one’s designs is part of the creative process. This is where the Middle East comes up since it’s my home. Women in the Middle East often have a very strong sense of fashion and a wonderful understanding of jewelry. Social media platform like Instagram have proven a great platform for many of them to express their sense of style and creativity.” While she is always working on her designs because she really loves her work, she also enjoys reading and traveling, anything that exposes her to new horizons. To this day, it all has been happening behind the scenes, but it’s about to change in no time. “I’m opening a worldwide boutique in Paris very soon, in just a few weeks actually. It will be right next to the wonderful Bristol Hotel. It’s very exciting. And, of course, I’m always looking forward to creating and introducing new designs,” she says.

At the end of the day, what she does is with so much passion as she loves the fact that her designs are used to celebrate love and life, and that they make people happy. It may be a birthday, an anniversary, a wedding or any other special occasion. “Through them, I get to be part of people’s joyful moments,” she says. “I’m a very private person so my jewelry often celebrates happy private moments. And I want it to be that way only.”

Entrepreneurial instinct One Coast Magazine meets the dashing Ms. Patsada Satthacharoen, founder of G Hospitality Consultants Co., Ltd to find out more about this new project of hers and what difference she wants to make. Could you brief us about yourself ?

I'm a 35 year old single professional career-driven woman. My grandmother owned a small hotel up north of Thailand before when I was little. My aunties and uncles also own restaurants. I grew up in a hospitality family. I graduated with a hotel management degree from Griffith University, Gold Coast and I’ve been working in the hotel industry for more than 10 years with various international five star hotel chains. In addition to the hotel and tourism experience gained through working at department head level for many years with award-winning international hotel groups such as Conrad Australia, Accor (Novotel and Sofitel brands), Millennium Hotels and Resorts, Marriott, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, Compass Hospitality, Virgin Active (part of Virgin Group owned by Sir Richard Branson) and recently Dream Phuket Hotel & Spa and Dream Beach Club, my ThaiAustralian background allows me to work comfortably in Eastern and Western-style environments as well as those which mix both. In fact, I lived and worked in Australia for five years.

How come you started “G Hospitality Consultants Co., Ltd.”?

It has always been my dream to have my own hospitality empire or my own hotel in the future when I retire just like my grandmother did. That’s one of the reasons why I studied hotel management. I basically know what I want and never waste my time, as I already know who I want to become. After working with various international hotel chains for more than 10 years and my involvement with 5 preopening projects, rebranding projects for 10 hotels and working for 2 operational stage hotels, I know every style of business from city (hotels, restaurants, beach club, health club), real estate big or small or even family size businesses.

My best friend, Mr. Phuchayoung Kongcharown, who is now also my business partner, has been in the hospitality industry for over 10 years as well. We decided that it was time to make our own empire. Many of my friends and colleagues always said things like why don’t you start your own business because you do have the capability to do it now so that’s why I decided to take the leap as I had been dwelling on it for quite a few years. I’m grateful to all my bosses in the past who taught me very well. I do respect and love them all.Without them, I would have not made it.

Could you please tell us more about “G Hospitality Consultants Co., Ltd.”?

We offer consulting services to big, medium and small businesses, family run businesses, people who don’t know where to start. For example; People who have a small apartment and they want to give some rooms a perfect hotel-like feel or those who want to open a restaurant but don’t know where to start. All consultations will be tailor-made individually for each business depending on their budget. We will not push the business owner for something they don’t want but rather listen to what they have in mind and achieve it for them. It’s stressful for outsiders as they don’t know who to trust. I have been through it all. Our company offers a one-stop service. We have a team dedicated to serving our clients in the best way possible because we believe in quality not quantity. We do this for passion not for money. We strive for perfection not just to finish the project and move on to the next. We treat each project as our own baby and it feels great to watch them grow. We offer our expertise in all areas such as operations, food & beverage, sales & marketing, public relations, revenue management, design concept details, branding, etc.We have three offices: Bangkok, Phuket and Nongkhai in order to serve our customers faster in that particular region.

What is your goal in 2016 for “G Hospitality Consultants Co., Ltd.”?

I’m in the process of expanding my other pipeline businesses at the same time. G Luxury Travel Thailand (high-end luxury tailormade concept travel planner for both inbound and outbound), G Wedding Planner, G MICE Services, G Marketing & Public Relations Agency/Consultants, G Design & Branding Concept Consultants.

What are the challenges you face in your job and how do you overcome them?

Each task has its own unique obstacles from delay construction to suppliers not delivering on time to cash flow problems and business owners who want to see their business grow faster but don’t know how to go about it. Then, there is a clash between the business owners and the management team. So, everything is about trust at the end of the day. Speaking from my personal experiences, I genuinely think every business owner needs to have faith in their own management team because they hire them to run their business. If this is achieved, then things get easier.

What’s your lifestyle?

Well, I love to read about future trends and business news updates. I also love to travel to see different places or hotels and how they do it at each destination. And of course I love to spend time with my Great Dane “BABY” and take her out as much as I can. For enquiries: patsada@ghospitalityconsultants.com +66-9-0602-0368

"More than a rotisserie, Cocotte is the encounter of organic farm products, carefully selected, and a rural chic atmosphere in the heart of Bangkok."

Bangkok is a world-class city with a desire to always invent something new. It’s no less buzzing than any other European metropolitan in the world. It’s no surprise that it really has a great food culture that every visitor loves to experience with zeal. This time, the city is lucky to have Cocotte (a stylish new farm roast and winery) that has just opened its restaurant here —which aims to bring a delicious taste of the bountiful countryside life to enthusiastic diners in today’s hectic lifestyle. Promoting a “farm to plate” concept by using premium meat and produce from certified organic farms around Thailand including the Kingdom’s famous royal projects – the restaurant seeks to promote simple, yet resolutely high quality, bistro-style dining in a comfortable but contemporary atmosphere of Bangkok. Located in vibrant Phrom Phong district, its setting is eye-catching and attractive. A spacious, airy interior features polished wooden tables and replica of the “HALLES" French market where you can select the finest delicatessen. All the materials used in the venue, including ceramics, tiles and wood, were sourced from a local artisan. An open kitchen, meanwhile, adds to the participatory and relaxed feel of the place. Overseeing the kitchen is the French head chef Jeriko Van Der Wolf, who has experience in several Michelin-starred venues in his home country and recently participated in the popular TV show, Iron Chef Thailand. Choice items on his menu include Tomahawk Australian Wagyu, Porchetta Cocotte Style, slowly roasted with smoked bacon, sundried tomato, peanuts and thyme and Truffle Cocotte Camembert, French Camembert cooked with black truffle and served with salad made with produce from a Royal Farm Project. Another highlight that simply can’t be missed is Beetroot and Crab, where slow-cooked beetroot, fresh crab, fresh fig and mascarpone cream combine to heavenly effect. In addition to the food element of the restaurant, its high-quality vintages have been sourced from some of the world’s most exciting wine growers. A carefully curated cocktail list includes signature creations like Cocotte’s Fuel and King & Queen of Garden. Cocotte also has an extensive selection of artisanal cheese and coffee supplied by the acclaimed Thai company Roast.

Whether it is crispy grilled half baby chicken fresh from the rotisserie or the restaurant’s signature “Cocotte Burger” – a Wagyu beef patty with emmental cheese, smoked bacon, tomato, caramelized onion served with hand cut fries – the culinary alchemy produced in the venue’s open kitchen is sure to delight lovers of expertly prepared comfort food. Inspiration for the restaurant is derived from, among other sources, the Slow Food movement. Originally founded in Italy, Slow Food is a grassroots organization that has since spread worldwide. Promoted as an alternative to fast food, it strives to preserve traditional and regional cuisine and encourages farming of plants, seeds and livestock characteristic of the local ecosystem. Among its goals are sustainable foods and promotion of local small businesses and producers. “We are proud that we can give something back to the people of Thailand by supporting local farmers in order to bring the very best produce from this nation to our customers,” says Managing Partner Maxence Le Bartz. “We are really delighted to work with so many talented and amazing people”.

“Slow food is not just a shiny concept that is something to do for show, it is a philosophy that we believe in and it is at the very heart of what we do. It took more than one year to source all the produce for the restaurant so for sure we now understand what ‘slow food’ really is,” he says. No expense has been spared in bringing the best out of this outstanding produce and a small, but perfectly formed, menu is the realization of all this hard work and investment. In fact, the restaurant is the first in Bangkok to use the Kamado Joe BBQ – underlining its pioneering approach to using innovative roasting and grilling techniques. Cocotte, located on the ground floor of 39 Boulevard on Sukhumvit Soi 39, and is open for lunch and dinner. It also operates a special Sunday brunch menu between 10am-2pm. The restaurant is the latest venture by The Kitchen Group Thailand, which owns a string of respected food and beverage outlets across the Kingdom. One Coast Magazine goes on the quest for wonders in

Jordan words by Mairead Doohan

Lawrence of Arabia claimed that, “No man can live his life and emerge unchanged”; and never is this truer than when visiting Jordan. Few places arouse the same sense of tranquillity as Wadi Rum or inspire wonder the way Petra does. Indeed, since Indiana Jones sought out the hidden city, Jordan has been a feature on many travellers’ wish lists. Placed at the epicentre of the Middle East, this astounding land has been coveted by everyone from Pharaohs to Roman Emperors, and with good reason. Lying east of the river and surrounded by mountains, Jordan is a sheltered oasis in an area shadowed in trouble. Surges of invaders have created a culturally rich land strewn with humbling architectural masterpieces from the Nabatean’s sophisticated water channelling to the domed Umayyad Palace in Amman. So allow yourself to walk in the shoes of pioneering explorers and discover what Jordan can reveal to you.

Petra

Petra A world wonder; UNESCO World Heritage Site and Jordan’s most valuable treasure, Petra is Jordan’s greatest tourist attraction. This vast and unique city is carved into the sheer rock face by the Nabataeans, an industrious Arab civilization, who settled here more than 2,000 years ago, turning it into an important junction for the silk, spice and other trade routes that linked China, India, and southern Arabia with Egypt, Syria, Greece, and Rome. For centuries, the Nabataean Kingdom thrived and Petra became widely admired for its refined culture, expansive architecture and ingenious complex of dams and water channels. Ultimately, however, the Roman Emperor Trajan annexed the Kingdom. By the 14th century, Petra was completely lost to the West, and so it remained for almost 300 years. Then in 1812, a Swiss traveller, Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, persuaded his guide to take him to the site of the rumored lost city. Secretly making notes and sketches, he wrote: “It seems very probable that the ruins at Wadi Musa are those of the ancient Petra.” Despite its familiarity the marvel of Petra’s most famous monument, the Treasury, is not diminished as you emerge from the winding Siq. But do not be tempted to stop there; continuing to explore you will pass the formidable high place of sacrifice, intricately carved tombs and, after a mere 900 step climb, an inspiring 1st century Monastery (Deir).

Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum “Vast, echoing and Godlike” was how T. E. Lawrence of Arabia described the maze of monolithic rockscape that makes up Wadi Rum. Rising up from the extensive desert floor, Jabal Umm ad Dami, Jordan’s tallest peak, challenges the dramatic sandstone formations for your attention. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, under both the natural and cultural significance categories, this is not just another desert. Frequently likened to a foreign planet or ‘valley of the moon’, the desert’s unworldly scenery is evidenced in its place in numerous Mars based films; most recently Matt Damon’s The Martian. To truly appreciate the everything of Wadi Rum, you must experience its nothingness – tour the remote corners not the well-worn SUV paths, sleep under the stars not in camps, forego hotel dinners to eat with the Bedouin around a fire.

Dead Sea Further geographic splendour awaits on the country’s west edge, where the Dead Sea spreads its arms as part of the border with Israel. Skulking at 1,401ft below sea level, the lowest point on Earth, this lake is said to be 34.2 per cent salt. As well as the obvious entertainment offered from bobbing around atop such salty water there are also many reputed health benefits. The mineral rich mud is said to moisturise, tone and restore skin by flooding it with nutrients and oxygen, while the minerals improve circulation and are rumoured to aid arthritis. Added to that the ozone and oxygen rich air will surely ensure you leave your resort refreshed and restored. However, if the thought of covering yourself in mud doesn’t suit then check into one of the many 5 star spa’s located along the lake’s edge – all offering a plethora of Dead Sea treatments involving far less DIY. Amman

Jerash Amman is also the gateway to Gerasa 30 miles north in Jerash. This pocket of Greco-Roman antiquity greets visitors with the second-century Hadrian’s Arch and thrills further with its colossal Oval Plaza and Temple of Artemis. The city’s golden age came under Roman rule and the site is now generally acknowledged to be one of the best preserved Roman provincial towns in the world. Hidden for centuries in sand before being excavated and restored over the past 70 years, Jerash reveals paved and colonnaded streets, soaring hilltop temples, handsome theatres, spacious public squares and plazas, baths, fountains and city walls pierced by towers and gates.

Amman Sprinkled across the hills like snow,Amman is a city like no other. Houses jostle each other for key position, some teetering deliriously close to the cliff edge in a miss match of colours, shapes and sizes. Jumbles of spice scented souks spiral around luxurious hotels, bungalows yield to flaunting villas, despite this the ancient has survived. Slices of the past stand stoically amongst the city’s busy life, or tower above it like guardians. The ancient core of the city, Jabal Al Qal’a is topped with amongst other things a Greco-Roman temple and an 8th century Umayyad castle. Numerous excavations of the citadel have revealed Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic remains. Not a fan of history? Don’t worry, the trip up the mountain also provides unmissable views of the entire city. For a more 21st century experience Jabal Amman, the opposite ‘peak’ does not lack for entertainment. Hands Across the Water Making a long term change by having a long term commitment.

“What happens when the kids turn 18?” “For those that want to go to university we fund that stage of their life and for those who are looking for a trade or employment we support them as well”. It’s a common question that is asked of us and fair enough. The view of charity and the expectations of how they operate is changing and donors, supporters or even passive observers have a view around how charities should be run and how their dollars should be utilised. At Hands Across the Water, we like to do things a little differently. Not to be different, but because we think it is the right thing. Hands Across the Water is an Australian charity operating in Thailand, that was formed by Peter Baines OAM in the aftermath of the South East Asian tsunami that occurred in 2004. Baines was a Forensic Investigator with the Australian Police at the time and was deployed to lead the international teams in the identification of those who died. Whilst working in Thailand Baines was introduced to a group of children, 32 of them who had lost their homes, their parents and many had lost their brothers and sisters. At the time of meeting the kids they were living in a tent supported by some wonderful Thai people. Upon returning to Australia after completing his Forensic work in Thailand assisting in the repatriation of thousands of bodies, Baines set up the charity Hands Across the Water. He often is quoted as saying “I couldn’t change what had happened, but I could change what happened next”. It was this mindset that saw him establish the charity and with the support of others the first home was built for the 32 kids in Takua Pa, just north of Khao Lak. That first home was opened in 2006 and quickly filled. Baines then realised a long term commitment was required. Fast forward to 2016, and Hands has not only remained committed to the community of Takua Pa and the children who lost so much but we have expanded our reach and the support we offer across the country. Hands now operates in seven different locations supporting over 300 children who each night get to lay their head down in a safe and loving environment. The children who are supported by Hands come from many different backgrounds and Hands classifies the kids in three categories. Those who have no parents or family to care for them. This might mean their parents have died, are incarcerated or are simply not known to them or anyone else. The second group of kids living in the homes are

116

O N E CO A S T

those who are at significant risk of physical, or sexual abuse if they remain within the location in which they were living. The kids from this group often find their way to one of our homes through police, or other government representatives who remove the children for their own safety and turn to Hands for assistance. The third group of kids who live with us are those who may very well know their parents, but right now, their parents are incapable of caring for them. These kids might stay with us for a short or medium term whilst their parents get back on their feet. Hands has made a significant difference to the lives of the children and the homes that we support. The first home we started supporting that was not related to the tsunami was a home for kids suffering from HIV or who had lost their parents to HIV. Due to insignificant and infrequent funds coming into this home the children were dying. Not because the carers didn’t care enough, but because not enough people cared. When Hands got involved and took responsibility for the funding of the home and the care of the children, the death of the children stopped. They were dying on a monthly basis. Since 2010, when Baines first met the kids and decided to get involved, children no longer die. The work that Hands does with our partners on the ground working to support the children and communities is making a difference. It is making a sustained and significant difference.

ecohelping hands

"Hands has now raised over 450 million Baht for the homes that are supported in Thailand and not one cent of those donations has been used on operations in Australia."

When Baines formed Hands he made a commitment that donors funds would be used to support the children and projects in Thailand that no donations would be used to fund administration or fundraising expenses. It was important to him then and remains so now. The commitment of not using donors funds to support the charity remains consistent to this day. Hands has now raised over 450 million Baht for the homes that are supported in Thailand and not one cent of those donations has been used on operations in Australia. How is it achievable, well we do things differently. In addition to the charity Hands has a commercial entity, a social enterprise that undertakes activities that raises money which is used to fund the operations of the charity and donates its excess funds to the charity at the end of the financial year. The social enterprise operations in Thailand has multiple benefits apart from raising money. It employs local people who may not otherwise have those opportunities and it provides training that enables those employed to improve their own standard of living. The operations in Thailand are changing lives and we can only continue to do that through meeting our funding demands that it costs to run seven different properties caring for 300 children each night. What Hands does to raise our funds is build shared experiences that offers meaningful rewards to those who engage. Our most successful shared experience and the cornerstone of all our fund-raising efforts are our charity bike rides. Each January we head to Thailand and our first group heads out from Nong Khai riding for eight days down the banks of the Mekong covering a distance of 800kms. We arrive at Home Hug, one of the homes we support in the town of Yasothon. We then fly to Bangkok and with another group of riders we then ride from Petchaburi to Khao Lak, another 800km ride over eight days. Each of the riders has to raise 250,000 Baht to be eligible to ride and on top of that they have to pay for their own tour expenses which of course we arrange for them. Are the rides successful? We started in 2009 with 17 riders. In January 2015 we had 127 riders on the road and raised over 42 million Baht in January 2015 alone. The reason the rides are so successful, the reason why we have such a strong demand for places and the reason why we have a retention rate of 73% of riders is because of the strength of the shared experience. The riders come thinking they are doing something

for the kids, but what they quickly realise is that they take more from the experience than they ever could have imagined. So to return to that initial question of what happens to the kids when they turn 18. The long term support of our children is a fundamental cornerstone of what we do. We currently have 29 of our children at University with another 12 to start this coming year. We have had two who have already graduated, one with law degree and one with a business degree. We know we have made a significant change to their live and suspect that change will flow onto their children when the time comes. All of us at Hands feel privileged to work with our Thai partners bringing opportunities for the children we support.

ver the last nine years, I have been working closely with the Government of Bhutan and local artists to create a responsible space for emerging artists to thrive. Demonstrating a commitment to the preservation of culture, art and the local artist, and underscoring their vital roles in a holistic society. Inspired by local artists, guided by my experience, and strengthened through creative relationships, the Bhutan Culture Company seeks to empower Bhutanese artists to share their ideas with the world. By providing access to training, developing infrastructure and creating opportunities for collaboration we seek to connect emerging artists to the tools they need to make their dreams a reality. Creative Collaboration and community involvement are two fundamental factors in determining which path the Nation will choose on its journey to modernity. The fruits of such collaborations are blooming throughout the local arts

community, uniting individuals from all socio-economic and educational backgrounds and creating more opportunity for expression, employment and inclusion. Art brings people together; it breaks down societal barriers and reflects the diversity of a nations rich culture and people. A few of our official creative collaborations in Bhutan include: The Babyboomers, Bhutan’s first popular rock band (www. thebabyboomersbhutan.com). Jamyang Wangchuk, Writer, Director, Producer, and Bhutan’s first actor to be recognized internationally for his role playing the young Dali Lama opposite Brad Pitt in the feature film Seven Years in Tibet. His directorial debut, Gyalsey Legacy of A Prince, is pioneering a new era in Bhutanese Cinema. And Chimmi Choden, who is the first internationally acclaimed fashion designer in Bhutan. The Bhutan Culture Company founder Aine Carey splits her time between the Himalayan Buddhist Kingdom of Bhutan and Koh Samui, an island in the Buddhist Kingdom of Thailand and shares her impressions on the emerging Bhutanese and Thai contemporary artists and their importance to the local and world community.

Our vision is not only about sustaining contemporary artistic expression in Bhutan, but about the preservation of a culture whose wisdom is, we believe, of paramount importance to the world community. Bhutanese artists exhibit an incredible willingness and ability to embrace change and thrive due to their understanding that all life is interdependent, while at the same time consciously exploring the meaning of “cultural influence, and its impact on themselves, their community, their nation and the world. During these last nine years, I have found myself drawn to another intriguing destination, the small island of Koh Samui in the Gulf of Siam. On the surface it is a place that seems to have been inundated with foreign influence almost to the point of annihilating authentic Thai identity, but upon deeper exploration nothing could be further from the truth. Due to the same Buddhist understanding as Bhutan, that all life is impermanent and interdependent, a new Thai cultural movement is being expressed in the local creative scene. The Bhutan Culture Company is currently collaborating with Mikolaj Krawczunas and Samui Circus Studio and its founder Thai Fire Artist, Poppy Sanman. Mikolaj is recognized internationally for his unique photographic style and currently resides in Koh Samui. Poppy is a very well known and internationally respected fire-juggler and performer. Poppy created the studio as a place for local and international artists to rehearse and learn the art of fire juggling, dance and performing arts. Poppy has a passion and reverence for his cultural values, traditions and stories, and brings this awareness to his art. Samui 120

Circus gives workshops and classes for children and adults to learn circus arts from the performers, as well as providing talented and responsible performers to the many venues on Koh Samui. Samui Circus provides a wonderful community service, by creating job opportunities for the performers and business opportunities within the community, that initiate cultural exchange and inclusiveness between foreign visitors, expats and Thai nationals, demonstrating interdependence in action and building lasting relationships and impressions. I hope my impressions inspire you to visit Bhutan and Thailand, and to experience through the eyes of your heart these vibrant cultures and emerging art scenes that welcome each visitor with their transformative embrace. Art is not aware of its Self; it expresses itself as an impulse to become, to create. In Bhutan and Thailand there is an energy of becoming, of evolving, which manifests itself as openness, generosity of spirit and compassion, and is expressed through these Bhutanese and Thai artists. It is the innocence of play and inclusiveness, combined with the creative force of dynamic action and natural curiously which makes the experience of these two ancient cultures both holistic and nurturing. LATEST MOVIES words by Matt Howard

involves frightening people and breaking their limbs for hard cash, and Holland Marsh (Ryan Gosling), a private investigator so bad at his job that his own daughter, Holly describes him as the worst detective in the world.

just out THE NICE GUYS REVIEW RUSSELL CROWE and RYAN GOSLING Director Shane Black loves creating likeable screw-ups. One of his earliest and most famous characters was Lethal Weapon’s Martin Riggs, a suicidal renegade cop played by Mel Gibson. But there was also Harry Lockhart, the heavy-drinking thief and wannabe actor played by Robert Downey Jr in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. You can probably spot the pattern here. In The Nice Guys, we get two likeable screw-ups for the price of one: Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe), a enforcer whose job basically

It’s Los Angeles, 1977, the music’s pretty good, but the movies, on the strength of the posters we see dotted around - Aiport 77, Jaws 2 - are dreadful. The parties are lavish, but the pavements outside are cracked and the Hollywood sign is neglected. There are cool sports cars with gleaming red paint, but also hideous brown station wagons covered in wood panelling. The fumes from those huge cars accounts for the thick layer of smog hanging over the city - a toxic cloud that winds up in the plot in all kinds of ways. A missing girl and a dead porn star named Misty Mountains are the starting point for Gosling and Crowe’s partnership, in which one provides the brawn and one provides the brains. Their adventures take in adult entertainment barons, briefcases of cash, dead bodies and gunfights. There’s a psychotic assassin who appears to have walked out of a much-loved 70s TV series.

Crowe’s also great value as his gruff co-star; he sticks more closely to the tough-guy persona we’ve seen in such movies as Gladiator and LA Confidential, but he matches Gosling for shambling charm. As the title suggests, Healy and Marsh are essentially decent people whose enthusiasm for their jobs far outstrips their talent. The Nice Guys isn’t high art, but it’s expertly paced in ways that aren’t always obvious. If you’re looking for bones to pick, then there is no new territory here, and March’s precocious daughter aside, female characters don’t exactly come out of The Nice Guys too well. Nevertheless the movie packs enough chemistry, charm, chaotic action and belly laughs to make its indulgentsounding two-and-a-half hour zip by. I’d even say that, as the final credits rolled, I found myself hoping they would be another one of these. That can only be a good sign. The Nice Guys is an unexpectedly good-natured, feelgood comedy thriller and for this I give the movie a 4 out of 5 star rating.

The dialogue is sharp . What is less expected is Gosling’s gift for comedy. Holland March is a cowardly, clumsy bundle of nerves who has a habit of falling from high places or doing the least heroic things imaginable in tight situations.

Oscar Isaac plays Apocalypse - the earliest mutant who ruled as a god in the ancient world. Waking from his slumber, Apocalypse draws together a band of four horsemen (minions) , among them Angel, Psylocke and Storm before turning his attention to the most wanted mutant of them all - Magneto (Michael Fassbender). Having gone into recluse following the events of X-Men: Days Of Future Past, Magneto again finds his life turned upside down, and after a bit of manipulation by Apocalypse, joins the villain in his plot to cleanse the Earth of the weak (ordinary people like you and me.)

Just Out

X MEN APOCALYPSE REVIEW JENNIFER LAWRENCE, MICHEAL FASSBENDER, JAMES McCAVOY, OSCAR ISAAC

On the other side Professor Xavier (James McAvoy) is still persisting with his School for Gifted Youngsters, where another class of fresh recruits are slowly learning how to control their powers. When Xavier realises the extent of Apocalypse’s abilities, he brings together his team of mutants, which also includes golden oldie heroes Raven/Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) and Beast (Nicholas Hoult) to help cancel armageddon.

In the pursuit of higher stakes, X-Men: Apocalypse does not come close to the excellent predecessor X-Men :Days of Future Past . Where that was the biggest success of the franchise so far - this sequel seems rather flat.

This is the plot at least .The problem with a lot of multi hero films is they are loaded with so many heroes, villains and plotstrands that the film strains to keep up with them all. X-Men: Apocalypse struggles with this process.

X-Men: Apocalypse sees an ancient enemy waking up to cause global havoc in the year 1983.

There are so many characters that some do shine and of course some get left behind.

There are occasional scenes where X-Men: Apocalypse hits the right notes . A scene with Magneto in a woodland clearing is effective both emotionally and visually. A few opening sequences in the ancient past are quite grand and remind me of an old Ben - Hur movie. The initial promise soon dwindles though and the villain himself really is quite wooden and poor. Oscar Isaac is a talented actor and this feels like an opportunity wasted. By the second half of the movie most scenes have dissolved into poorly done CGI. Nearly as bad as a Star Wars prequel. It basically becomes a super hero disaster movie. Because the drama has been quite flat proceeding it, the scenes do not really resonate. X-Men: Apocalypse is not terrible - the quality of the cast, from Fassbender to McAvoy to Lawrence ensures that. But compared to one of this year’s big superhero movies, Captain America: Civil War, it does not really come close. Overall being a fan of the X- Men films it is quite a dissapointment. After six movies ( not including spinoffs ) I guess Xavier can only tell Magneto "he has good in him" so many times before it starts to wear thin. The franchise desperately needs a new take on it if it is to continue and for this I give it two out of five star rating

focustop tv & movies

LATEST MOVIES Sequels are inevitable when a film does well but as you can see from Anchorman 2, Zoolander 2, Dumb and Dumber 2, Hangover 2 and 3 - they rarely turn out anywhere near as good as the original. Bad Neighbours 2 is pretty thin where its story is concerned but it’s got some big laughs, and doesn’t take an obvious path. There are plenty of good lines, slapstick moments and has a string of good set-pieces but you forget most of the story five minutes after you leave.

just out BAD NEIGHBOURS 2 SORORITY RISING SETH ROGAN ZAC EFRON, ROSE BYRNE, CHLOE MORETZ

Fortunately the slapstick moments more than make up for this. Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne’s Mac and Kelly are now selling their house and need 30 days without disruption during the Escrow period. But the nextdoor house formerly occupied by the fraternity is now home to Chloe Grace Moretz’s sorority, so here we go again. Zac Efron’s Teddy returns to lend mainly shirtless support as the inside man.

So - it looks like Hollywood has finally ran out of ideas. It started with THE LEGO MOVIE which actually turned out to be a very funny, entertaining movie. But its success has led studios to start searching for other similar properties that could then replicate THE LEGO MOVIE, even if there was no potential to them whatsoever. And so comes Angry Birds, The next on the production line of toy/game infused movies coming this way.

family Movie THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE JASON SUDEKIS, SEAN PENN, DANNY McBRIDE

Set on Bird Island, The Angry Birds Movie is led by Red (Jason Sudeikis), a bird, who has been shunned by his neighbors, and has decided to live on outskirts of town. Yet another outburst leads Red to be sentenced to anger management classes, where he meets the speedy but chatty Chuck (Josh Gad), Bomb (Danny McBride), and Terence (Sean Penn). But while the unexpected arrival of a large boat to Bird Island causes excitement amongst the other birds, it soon becomes clear that it is up to no good.

There are a lot of good jokes in the movie: their daughter plays with a dildo which they keep explaining away as a cartoon character; they constantly swear in front of her; Mac is – inevitably – a stoner. Neither seems motivated in life beyond the typical rat race: get a job, try and keep it, have a kid, buy a bigger house. As far as their being able to move house without complication goes this is where both films hit there stride. Luckily, Zac Efron is on their side and he’s a revelation. Constantly poking fun at his teen idol persona, he can do it all: the dumb college jock , physical comedy (more airbags; splendid receipt of a tyre in the face), sharp line delivery. Although he also has his top off at every opportunity he does not come off as an absolute tool. Despite a low key ending which for once does not end with a hint at a sequel - you leave happy having enjoyed some genuine laugh out loud moments and for this reason I give this movie a 3.5 star rating

But the movie had just enough to keep the kids happy which obviously is its target market . I can see all the merchandise being bought by kids everywhere now which is obviously the name of the game. But it does play like a blatant cash in. One or two jokes land but the movie can't provide consistent laughs thanks to a poor script. Thankfully, after a long and predictable set-up, The Angry Birds Movie’s conclusion provides some much needed fun. Its also touching which is just enough to stop The Angry Birds Movie from being a total dud. But a sequel is immediately teased in the credits, which highlights the number one reason why it was made. I really hope this is not the case as they is really not enough in this to warrant another story. I give this movie 1 star

The problem with The Angry Birds Movie is that it is just not very funny. I think all the funny parts are actually shown in the trailer
