PROVIDING A RESPONSIBLE AND INNOVATIVE SERVICE

We supply our teams with innovations that not only help to provide a stronger professional service to our customers but also help to reduce their own carbon emissions, enabling them to reach their climate goals.

Our Toucan system has helped us to achieve a 97% reduction in our single-use plastic usage across client sites. Water savings devices, and machinery such as the InAaqua machine (which refreshes water used in the scrubber driers), are important innovations contributing to a water consumption reduction of 86% throughout the business. Water-saving analysis is becoming increasingly important as we progress with our carbon reduction projects.

In 2021 we introduced hybrid vehicles across Samsic UK to reduce fuel consumption, and where possible we utilise online meetings to minimise business miles in general.

We continually reduce our environmental impact on our clients’ sites by hosting quarterly workshops with key stakeholders to report on the environmental measures being performed and discuss how we can improve. We review clients’ energy and electricity usage, water usage, and mobility on-site, improving what we can and offsetting what we cannot by participating in tree planting program.

EMPOWERING OUR HUMAN RESOURCES AND DEVELOPING OUR TALENTS

Samsic’s own training academy, accredited as an assessment centre by the British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc), ensures all the Samsic UK family are trained in the skills of how to conduct a safe, environmentally friendly cleaning service, using methodologies and innovations that generate as little environmental impact as possible.

The Learning Management System (LMS) has been widely launched to facilitate easy, on-the-go learning, whether relating to professional practice, personal wellbeing, or other skills such as financial management or people skills. The LMS is easy to access, available to all employees, and is a powerful tool for personal development. We additionally offer apprenticeships, further education, and qualifications to all our employees, helping them to develop their talents and reach their goals, and helping them to grow their careers within Samsic.

DEVELOPING A SUPPORTIVE AND SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY

Notable initiatives towards Samsic’s societal impact include the introduction of the Samsic Charity Steering Group, whereby colleagues throughout the business work together to provide support, whether voluntary or through gifting, to numerous charities, schools or other non-profit institutions across the nation.

Samsic are proud to have an established, long-term partnership with The Rainbow Trust as our official corporate charity in the UK. We regularly donate and volunteer to support the meaningful work they do for families with seriously ill children.

Additionally, our employees dedicate time to litter picking and green space care through our partnership with Plastic Busters. Caring for our local communities and environment is a priority. We are committed to sustaining these partnerships over the long run to continually give back and make a positive local impact through both donations and hands-on volunteering work.

Samsic takes the mental health of its colleagues seriously, and as well as providing a year-round Mental Health First Aider program where team members can access confidential, free support, we also celebrate an annual Mental Health Awareness Week. Mental Health Awareness Week 2023 saw Samsic teams across the UK take part in a yoga and wellbeing session (available in-person or online), a healthy social breakfast, and wellbeing resources were distributed to ensure that everyone in the Samsic family knows where to access additional support should they need it.

A cycle-to-work scheme is also accessible for all employees to encourage a carbon-free commute.

By empowering our colleagues, we are ensuring the promotion of diversity and inclusion, whilst helping our teams to feel fulfilled as part of the Samsic Family.

To actively engage our employees and clients in simple yet impactful measures aimed at reducing our environmental footprint, we have introduced our ‘ Guide to Better Green Practices. ’ This guide invites everyone to take part in making a positive difference. Every month, our teams embrace a specific eco-gesture challenge, encompassing areas like water, paper, energy, digital practices, waste management, mobility, and catering. They are encouraged to share these eco-gestures widely and take concrete actions across our clients’ sites.

Annually, we meticulously report our energy consumption and the associated greenhouse gas emissions in our Director’s report. In this endeavour, we collaborate with Comply Direct, a trusted partner who furnishes us with a Streamlined Energy Carbon Report.

This report not only aids us in tracking our environmental performance but also serves as a valuable tool for setting and achieving our ESG targets.

All of this will help us shape the future by making Samsic not only a Partner and Employer of Choice, but playing a fundamental part of building a sustainable and green future of this generation but also generations to come.

Our action against carbon emissions has helped us to improve our operational performance and increase our sustainability credentials, all with the sole aim of preventing further pollution to our planet.

To enhance our ability to both elevate and closely monitor all facets of our company’s operations, our ESG reporting platform serves as a comprehensive tool for achieving a harmonious management of all dimensions of our organisational life and activities. This platform empowers us to maintain a well-rounded view of the various parameters that influence our company’s performance and impact on environmental, social, and governance matters. It enables us to make informed decisions, track progress, and continuously improve our ESG initiatives to ensure they align with our strategic goals and values.

We are continually reviewing our systems, process, and supply chain to seek to minimise ours and our clients’ impact on the environment from our service delivery. We aim to improve workplace environmental standards through:

X Minimise chemical and detergent consumption through the use of EU Eco Label accredited sustainable materials, the innovative Toucan chemicalfree cleaning solution and Eco-dosing techniques.

X Design our service delivery models using LEAN processes to eliminate unproductive cleaning and avoid duplication, overlap and over-production.

X Minimise energy and water consumption through the use of technology enabled equipment.

X Improve indoor air quality standards across our clients’ sites.

X Recycling and Waste Management - We support recycling and recovery techniques from all waste arisings generated. Our cleaning staff will be trained in waste segregation techniques to identify correct waste sorting and segregation to maximise the recovery rate from all waste streams.

X Air Quality Improvement - Our Total Green Solutions approach will support improvements in indoor air quality throughout the workspace using HEPA filtration or with water-based filters with a minimum of 99.97% of all air particles leading directly to improved air quality, eliminating dust, smoke, mould, bacteria and pollen.

X End of Life Equipment - Our supply partner provides an end-of-life waste recovery solution for all equipment items. Equipment beyond economic repair is returned for material and item recovery. Materials recovered from residual equipment are recycled for future use.

X Diversity in the supply chain - Following 2020 assessment, the Samsic Group achieved Gold Level status from EcoVadis with a score of 68/100 for assessing sustainability performance of a diversity of suppliers across global supply chains. The result places Samsic Group among top 2% of companies offering sustainable Facilities Management services and top 3% of companies in all sectors worldwide.

X Quarterly Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) workshops with key stakeholders to report back on environmentally friendly materials being used across client sites and to discuss the latest innovation and equipment that could further reduce emissions and the impact on the environment.

X Promoting and encouraging environmental improvements on a global scale we put forward Case studies for nomination at the National Sustainability Awards ceremony, alongside submissions for Green Apple Awards in the environmental sector this also continues to gain recognition for our joint achievements.

„ Implementing Sustainability Measures

Samsic launched ‘Planet 2030’, our sustainable development program, in 2021, and has since made huge investments and developments in approving the sustainability of our business and how we can offer more to our clients to help them achieve their sustainability and ESG goals.

Planet 2030 provides our business with a template and focus, helping us to:

X Protect our environment,

X Empower our Human Resources and develop our talents,

X Provide a responsible and innovative service,

X Develop a supportive and sustainable society.

Key ESG-related roles were recruited internally within Samsic to help drive our commitment. We developed a Health, Safety and Compliance department, and recruited a Cyber Security expert. We also partnered with an External Sustainable Environmental Expert to assist us with our Carbon Compliance and introduced a Responsible Procurement Policy across the business.

Clients such as Chiswick and Broadgate Estate were provided with ESG Managers by Samsic, a dedicated individual to focus on implementing ESG strategies and carbon neutral projects, including social value projects and promoting diversity and inclusion across each site.

With a structured development plan and the right people in our teams to enforce it, we have since been able to work towards achieving zero carbon emissions across the business. The ‘Samsic Zero Carbon Roadmap’ works to: eliminate, reduce, substitute, and compensate carbon emissions. We aim to dispense for our operations to dispense as little carbon as possible and utilise growing offsetting schemes to help us reach the coveted 0%.

Our offsetting scheme includes UK tree planting across our contracts and within the communities, however in 2023 we rolled out additional schemes that support unplanned deforestation in Brazil, Kenya, and South America.

„ Diversity, Inclusion and Social Impact

At Samsic, our people are our top priority. We believe that engaged, empowered employees lead to lower turnover, stronger performance, and better results overall. To drive engagement, we focus on supportive leadership, career development, and a positive work culture.

Our account managers at Battersea Power Station showcase this commitment. They proactively create advancement opportunities by arranging training like customer service courses for potential supervisors. We also collaborate with organisations like Wandsworth Borough Council on local employment and skills programs. Initiatives like this help cultivate an inclusive, growthoriented environment.

We promote a unified “one team” mentality across all sites. At Battersea Power Station and the Kraft Heinz Company, toolbox talks align teams on changes and encourage feedback. Our recognition programs, from Certificates of Appreciation to bonus rewards, reinforce our family ethos. Events like International Women’s Day and Employee of the Month celebrations further motivate and engage.

Upskilling initiatives provide added benefits. At the Kraft Heinz facility, training our Hygiene Operatives expanded their capabilities to meet broader operational needs. Our cloud-based Learning Management System, widely utilised by all UK employees regardless of whether they are site or office-based, enables ongoing development through offering custom courses on professional skills, financial literacy, and mental wellbeing and can be utilised by anyone regardless of job role within the business.

A people-centric focus drives results. Broadgate Estate’s KPIs reflect a positive 84% average grade. The implemented Future Leaders Program (a scheme that provides career development opportunities), Christmas bonuses, birthday celebrations, and monthly employee awards boost engagement. Providing additional perks like massages and manicures to operatives on sites also helps towards maintaining an impressive 2% churn rate.

Helping communities is achieved by prioritising local employment. At our Chiswick Park site, we also invest in work placement programs for young offenders or rehabilitation opportunities for Hounslow residents. Disability awareness recruitment is additionally active across Samsic, to ensure we are enabling equal opportunities for all.

To enable constant improvement, we maintain a collaborative approach with client partners like Broadgate Estate. With transparent discussions and shared ownership, we deliver high performance together. Between meetings, we use auditing systems like ECAT to monitor standards, identify trends, and provide targeted support.

At Samsic, we know that investing in our people drives individual growth, team cohesion, and organisational success. By empowering our colleagues, we empower our business.

„ Green Technologies

To establish robust service standards and support ESG objectives, Samsic has implemented several environmental technologies to be utilised throughout our operations.

Two of Samsic’s prominent technologies, Smart Task and ECAT, have been utilised effectively at the Kraft Heinz Company Factory in Kitts Green, British Land, and Chiswick Park; these technologies help efficiently allocate labour and resources. Smart Task is used to track time and motion across the contract, and ECAT has powerful auditing capabilities and is used to monitor the quality of cleanliness on-site. Investing in industry-leading sustainable equipment, such as Smart Task and ECAT, helps identify and reduce: waste, operator fatigue, and carbon footprint across expansive grounds. We assisted British Land with their goal of reducing their carbon emissions by 75% using this technology.

Our Toucan innovation, for example, is an electrochemically activated saltwater chemical-free disinfectant solution, that eliminates up to 99.999% of micro-organisms, bacteria, viruses and germs on contact. Toucan does not require harsh chemicals, heavily minimises the use of plastics, and can be made on-site eliminating the need for ongoing supply chain or transport use. Toucan is used widely on sites such as Chiswick Park, disinfecting a huge 33-acre campus, and at Broadgate Estate where it is part of an on-site drive to decrease chemical usage by 10% yearly.

Where possible, Samsic endeavours to exchange all petrol-powered machinery and equipment for lowercarbon, battery alternatives. For example, at Broadgate Estate we installed the innovative InAqua water recycling machine. This allows the same water to be re-used for up to a week, based on 3-4 hours of daily use, thereby minimising water consumption. The scrubber dryers at Broadgate Estate save 1,600 litres of water per day.

1,600 l

At the Kraft Heinz Company our Samsic Innovation Team conducted numerous research projects to find how cleaning tasks can be optimised within the facility. Technological advancements including steam boxes and Co-botic technology were utilised in extensive trials. Additionally, it was found that a 40-hour production shutdown at the weekends translated to great ESG benefits for Kraft Heinz with more efficient use of resources, less wastage, better equipment lifespan, and an overall reduction in operational costs.

Another Green Technology implemented at the huge 34-acre Broadgate Estate is Samsic Sensor Technology that ensures Cleaning Operatives are only cleaning the areas that need attention. This technology has also been deployed at Hurstpierpoint College, ensuring processes are smarter, downtime is minimised, and resources and labour are not ‘wasted’.

„ Waste Reduction

Although we aim to reduce waste where possible throughout our operations and our company, whether using technologies or implementing new processes, waste is in itself a major focus in our approach to being more sustainable.

Our waste management system must ensure that recycling and reuse are paramount, and suppliers in this area are required to showcase innovation, added value, ESG strategies, cost-effectiveness, and service improvements.

Colleagues receive waste management training, and in larger sites where the waste quantity is more demanding, we recruit Zero Waste Managers. Zero Waste Managers are focused on reducing our carbon output, and - as in the case of our work with Chiswick Park - increasing our recycling to 75%, engaging with guest companies through training, waste reduction campaigns, and educational activities. Whether through dedicated Zero Waste Managers or in our daily operations, we deliver a bestin-class waste management framework/strategy that is bespoke for our clients.

„ Ethical supply chain

To reduce our environmental impact and carbon emissions, we seek to develop sustainable partnerships with our suppliers, ensuring our ESG commitment is extended throughout the supply chain. Our Responsible Purchasing policy is integral to our development, and prior to launching a contract with a new supplier, we ensure an ESG questionnaire is completed which outlines their policy, process, and targets.

In 2023 we partnered with Serious Tissues to supply toilet rolls and tissues across our client base. Serious Tissues uses 100% recycled paper in their production and plant a tree for every roll sold, with over 1,400,600 trees planted to date! By conducting business with suppliers which share our vision, we can make even more of an impact.

Samsic has also introduced the use of hybrid and electric vehicles across the business, utilised most prominently in our security service. Internally, we aim to reduce business miles where possible by using public transport or digital meeting services to communicate.

By empowering employees, innovating processes, and building partnerships, we aim to deliver world-class service while upholding our core values.

Although we are proud of the progress we have made, our journey is far from over, and we understand that only an ethos of continuous improvement will ensure we can create a cleaner, more inclusive world.
