After years of battling addiction and homelessness, Ryan came to British Columbia seeking recovery. Despite getting clean, he still needed shelter. With a troubled history at facilities in Saskatoon, he approached The Salvation Army in Maple Ridge expecting rejection. Instead, they welcomed him with open arms.
The shelter provided a safe environment with his own bunk and locker, located just metres from recovery support services. The Salvation Army team helped him file taxes, apply for income support and housing, and obtain his birth cer-
tificate. The chaplain offered emotional support whenever needed. Ryan slowly rebuilt his life, finding housing and employment.
Today, he works as a peer support co-ordinator for Stop Overdose Ridge Meadows (STORM), helping others navigate similar challenges. His dream is to join the Salvation Army team.
“I slept at the shelter, and I slowly just re-pieced my life back together,” says Ryan.

As a single mother in her final year of college, Kristen couldn’t work while caring for her daughter and expecting another child. With limited funds covering only rent and utilities, she turned to The Salvation Army in Prince George for Christmas assistance.
The support exceeded her expectations. Beyond grocery gift cards and presents, the Salvation Army team realized that Kristen had recently moved so they provided her with household essentials, such as pots and pans. The personalized

gift selection brought joy to her daughter who received everything she wanted for Christmas.
The grocery cards enabled Kristen to purchase healthy food options for her children. This comprehensive support allowed her family to celebrate a memorable holiday season during challenging times. As she approaches this Christmas, Kristen remains deeply grateful for The Salvation Army’s continued presence.
“I just want to give a big thank you to The Salvation Army for all the support that we get when we need it,” says Kristen.
