Gift books to treasure

As a child who loved reading, with a birthday 10 days before Christmas, winter has always been about gift books and book tokens for me, so I thought I would offer some suggestions for books which might make great presents with lasting appeal.

For the very youngest bookloving children, and in fact, any book-loving people, there is Nursery Rhymes, a new hardback edition of classic nursery rhymes originally published in 1919, with the original pictures by Claud Lovat Fraser restored by Ben Coppin, edited by the historian Robert Lacey (historical consultant to the award-wining Netflix series, The Crown). It is charming. It includes a wonderful Introduction by Robert Lacey about the original illustrator and the history of nursery rhymes, and at the back, there is an account of the meaning (if any!) of each of the rhymes. Small children will simply enjoy the well-loved and familiar words and the bright vivid illustrations. Older children and adults have the extra pleasure of learning more about them. A book to treasure.

Another gorgeously reworked classic is Grimm’s Fairy Tales retold and illustrated by Sandra Dieckmann. This stunning collection of old favourites (such as ‘Rapunzel’ and ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and less well-known tales such as ‘Mother Holle’ and ‘The Shoes that were Danced to Pieces’ deserves a place on the bookshelf. Each story is told over about 10 pages, with rich illustrations to inspire the imagination, so these are perfect bedtime reads for young children.

If you already have editions of Nursery Rhymes and Grimm’s Fairy Tales, try A Bedtime Full of Stories: 50 Folk Tales and Legends from Around the World by Angela McAllister, illustrated by Anna Shepeta. There will definitely be stories in here that won’t be familiar but will be intriguing. How about Tsar Trajan’s Ears, for example, a story from Serbia, or Paka the Cat and Pania the Rat, from Zanzibar, and The Woman who Stole the Sea, from Fiji. Each tale is told in just three or four pages, perfect to read aloud at bedtime, but the similarities and differences between the stories from different parts of the world could lead to longer conversations about their countries of origin.

For older children who like experimenting in the kitchen, A World of Flavour: A Celebration of Food and Recipes from Around the Globe by Gabrielle Langholtz, illustrated by Tania Garcia, would be an inspired gift. Along with some delicious and easy-to-follow recipes (some familiar, some less so), are pages which discuss how certain foods (e.g. dairy, tea, or bread) are prepared differently and enjoyed around the world. There are plenty of recipes I’d like to try making – how about Shondesh, the sweet rosewater and cardamom scented curd, a favourite sweet in India and Bangladesh, or Gado Gado from Indonesia, a savoury salad with peanut dressing. Even if you don’t try any of these recipes, the book would be fabulous company on the sofa on a wintry afternoon.

If classic tales and rhymes won’t fit the bill, what about There’s No Such Thing as a Silly Question by Mike Rampton, illustrated by Guilherme Karsten? Published by Nosy Crow and Cambridge University, this is brilliant. The idea for the book came from the author’s daughter who asked him one day, ‘Can spiders run out of web?’. He realised he had absolutely no idea but really wanted to know the answer. And so the book was born. There are 213 more questions like that, with answers to fascinate all readers. I’ll leave you with one more question: ‘Do fish drink water?’… Not telling you the answer – you’ll have to buy the book!

If none of these choices appeal, and you’re looking for a gift for a child with a quirky sense of humour, try The Book that Really Didn’t Want to be Read by David Sundin. Astonishingly, this was first published in Swedish and has been translated by B.J Woodstein. I have no idea how you would go about translating a book in which, amongst other things, a ‘strange and amazing machine’ appears which turns all the ‘S’s into ‘F’s and so, reading it becomes tricky. ‘If it poffible to read thif book now? What if you want to fay that you’re peckifh for a falad? Or a cheefe fandwich?’. And so on. There are a lot more word games played in this book – it is great fun but not for the faint-hearted reader!

As always, all these books are on the shelves at Hart’s Books (www.hartsbooks.co.uk) in Saffron Walden, along with countless other treasures. If you can’t decide between them, there’s always a Book Token – giving a child the freedom to choose something special for themselves. Jo Burch Founder of Words in Walden

The thoughtful truth of family disputes

Making the decision to end a relationship can be fraught with emotional turmoil, but it is important to be aware that the related legal issues which need to be resolved, will test your emotional and mental strength.

Emotional impact

The nature of family law issues often means parties are required to pick over the detail of their relationship, which can undermine the character or intentions of their former partner or family member. This approach can heighten the emotional wounds, increasing feelings of guilt, anger, and betrayal.

Litigation fatigue

With the average case taking around nine months to achieve a resolution, there is a likelihood that during the process questions will be raised about why matters are not resolved or whether there is a way to speed things up. Litigation fatigue relates to the mental and emotional exhaustion that builds up as individuals go through the legal process. It is not unusual to experience feelings of being trapped in a cycle of waiting and uncertainty, which can lead to a decline in emotional and psychological well-being.

Risk stress

In any dispute resolution process, there is the ever-present stress of risk, but this is intensified in family cases due to the perceived impact on the future life of the party concerned. There will come a stage in a negotiation, where the certainty of an offer on the table is set against the perception of an outcome which could be achieved.

Settlement

While the prospect of reaching a settlement may seem like a beneficial end to the exhausting and stressful process, the emotional impact of a settlement can be surprisingly complex. On the one hand, settlement can bring immense relief, offering closure and a resolution that ends the uncertainty, but on the other the wrong outcome can lead to lingering resentment, particularly if one party feels that the settlement is unfair, which can trigger feelings of grief, loss, and even failure.

At Tees Law, we strive to understand the emotional dynamics at play when a relationship breaks down to enable us to provide more compassionate and mindful support to our clients by choosing the best option for you to achieve a resolution. It cannot be said that a family dispute is simply a legal problem to be resolved, when it is an emotional journey, which to navigate successfully requires appropriate support and guidance.

Temporary ice rinks are being set up in different locations but we would recommend Braintree Village. These sessions are running from 15th November - 5th January. Valentine’s Day…

Let’s change the narrative!

We are in the era of single parent families and co-parenting, blended families, shift working, and self-employment. Parents and grandparents (and whomever else you are lucky enough to call extended family) strive to share parenting and household responsibilities…. Whatever we have going on in our lives we all face time juggling, priorities and balance.

Let’s face it, it’s hard to always get things right! We’re only human after all.

As a single mother with an ex husband and a new regular man in our lives (I believe the politically correct terminology is Step-Father!) I find the relentless timetabling and correspondence exhausting. As well as working full time, managing everyone’s emotions and expectations and still getting the dinner on the table is a frequent battle.

So why don’t we take the pressure out of Valentine’s Day? Do we need one day a year to be reminded to tell the ones we love that we love them? Do we need to be guilted into spending money on a romantic dinner for 2 and a babysitter because we are supposed to? Evan as a single woman I was bullied into “Galentines Day” by my other girl mates… very sweet but it still cost me a small fortune in childminding and cocktails and I didnt even get a snog at the end!!!!

This may not resonate with everyone. But… why not use this Valentine’s Day to just simply, share the love? Whatever our “situation” may be, let’s just appreciate what we have and give love!

Here are some ideas for the families…. Happy Valentine’s Day!

1. Say “I Love You” Go around the table and have everyone share 1 reason they love each member of the family.

2. Snuggle up for a family movie night. Valentine’s Day movies for families are all over the TV right now… grab some blankets, pillows, cosy up on the couch and watch a movie.

3. Bake a special Valentine’s treat. Get out your aprons and whip up a special Valentine’s treat for the family to enjoy after dinner.

4. A special family game night. Play some Valentine’s Day themed games and activities together (we changed Mr & Mrs!).

5. Go on a Family Valentine’s Day date. Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be all about romance. Use this time for the entire family to get dressed up and try a new restaurant or take a picnic on the dog walk and enjoy a change of scenery Remember, Love is all you Need!

Finding Your Beat: Exploring the world of dance styles for expression and growth

Dance offers young people a vibrant world of styles to explore, each with its own rhythm, history, and expression. From the powerful beats of hip-hop to the structured grace of ballet, there’s a style for every personality and interest.

Ballet provides a foundation in technique, discipline, and balance, helping dancers build strength and focus. For those drawn to a more fluid form, contemporary dance encourages self-expression and storytelling through movement, allowing dancers to connect deeply with music and emotion.

Jazz dance, with its upbeat tempos and high-energy moves, is perfect for those who love rhythm and flair, while hiphop brings street style to the dance floor, blending rhythm, creativity, and individuality. Tap dance introduces the joy of making music with your feet, creating unique beats and rhythms with every step.

For young people interested in cultural heritage, styles like flamenco, Indian classical, and African dance offer ways to explore rich traditions and histories through movement. Social dances, like salsa or swing, bring people together, building confidence and connection.

Whatever the style, dance helps young people develop coordination, confidence, and creativity, offering a world of movement where they can discover and express their unique selves.

Switching is Back!

Over 80% of households are now on standard energy tariffs, with prices dictated by the energy price cap. After a 10% rise on 1st October, the cap is predicted to rise substantially again this winter and then stay around that level in January, when the next quarterly change takes place. With competition slowly returning, and fixes and other energy deals available to those willing to switch, it’s possible to forestall upcoming increases by shopping around now for the best deals, so don’t miss out!

Our energy specialists, Emily, Sarah and Hayley, can offer help and advice on switching and a whole range of other issues including benefits advice, fuel vouchers, debt advice, home improvement grants and energy efficient behaviours. If you live in Uttlesford and have a young family, they may even be able to visit you at home!

Share the Warmth 2024

More than 4,000 people in Uttlesford are living in fuel poverty and there has been a rapid rise in the number of people coming to us for help and advice relating to utility bills over the last few years. With recent changes to eligibility for Winter Fuel Payment and rise in the Energy Price Cap, we are concerned that even more people will struggle to heat their homes this winter, so we have re-launched our Crowdfunder Campaign, “Share the Warmth Fund for 2024“.

Money donated to this fund will be ring-fenced and used to provide emergency support for local people who cannot afford to top up their meters, pay their utility bills or fill their oil tank, so they aren’t forced to make the impossible choice between heating and eating. Our previous campaign raised over £5,200 and supported 109 people over 10 months. With an even more challenging situation this year we would love to smash our previous total! So please give what you can - every little helps, as they say!

If you don’t have access to the internet at home, you can get online for free at your local library, (ask staff to help you) or call the Essex Wellbeing Service on 0300 303 9988.
