After a big, beautiful summer filled with adventures, ice creams, and late bedtimes, we’re feeling the gentle pull of autumn — and, dare we say it, the comforting return of routine.
Like many of you, we’ve made golden memories with our children over the break — from beach days to rainy craft mornings and everything in between. But as the leaves begin to turn and the mornings cool, there’s something lovely about fresh notebooks, school shoes by the door, and a chance to catch our breath (sort of!).
This issue is packed with family-friendly inspiration for the months ahead — cosy ideas for weekends, things to try after school, and gentle reminders to savour the season. Whether you’re getting stuck into the new term, hunting conkers in the park, or just enjoying a cup of tea while the kids are out, we hope there’s something in these pages to make you smile.
Happy autumn — and happy reading!

Children at Avanti Brook and Meadows benefit from a comprehensive and coherent learning journey from Pre-School right through to aged 18 and graduation from Avanti 6 | Bishop’s Stortford at Avanti Grange, our Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ (2025) Secondary School.
I found on the shelves at Harts’ Books some unusual and creative picture books which use food as a way into thinking about all sorts of other topics. I thought I’d share them in this issue of Salad Days.
Green Eggs and Ham is the classic from Dr Seuss, a passionate educator who thought traditional reading books were boring and wanted to make reading fun. Famously, he was challenged to write a book using only 50 words. These ridiculously irresistible rhymes are the result. I grew up with this one, but it is both ageless and fabulous and I wanted to remind you of it. Sam-I-Am tries to encourage his friend to try green eggs and ham with the age-old parental trick of offering alternative ways to eat them (rather than just ‘would you like them or not’), in paired rhymes, as in, ‘would you like them here or there?’ ‘Would you like them with a goat? Would you like them in a boat?’ and so on. The options are ridiculous, as are his friend’s repeated refusals. Children learn new words from the rhymes, and they also learn, of course, that sometimes, capitulating and trying what’s on offer, might just be a nice surprise.
Sometimes it is very important not to be forced into trying a food – if, for example, a child has an allergy or intolerance. No Cheese Please by Nishani Reed and Maria Neradova is a lovely and sensitive treatment of this topic. It’s Mouse’s birthday and all his friends arrive with all sorts of delicious cheese dishes – from fondue to a ‘cheesy cheddarsaurus rex with stretchy mozzarella specs’. But mouse can’t eat cheese. Everyone is very upset. Mouse’s friends leave, only to return a few hours later with a dairy-free fabulous chocolate cake! Mouse’s final lines to the reader are ‘And if you‘ve got some allergies, I wish you awesome friends like these!’. This isn’t just about food intolerance, of course. There’s a gentle lesson about understanding that everyone is different, and caring enough to respect their differences.
An anarchic example of the importance of respecting preferences is Rene and Glumfoot in The Café at the Edge of the Woods, the debut picture-book by Mikey Please. Rene dreams of opening a café serving fine cuisine. She builds one on the edge of the woods and when she advertises for waiters, the only applicant is a small monster called Glumfoot. When no customers arrive to sample Rene’s dishes, Glumfoot heads out into the wood and brings back an ogre whose idea of culinary delight is a bag of bats, slugs in goo, and maggot fondue. The ogre refuses all Rene’s delicious-sounding offerings until Glumfoot has the very clever idea of re-designing Rene’s food on the ogre’s plate on the way from kitchen to table, so that the cheddar and artichoke tart resembles pickled bat, and so on. One delighted customer; one delighted café owner! It’s very funny and the illustrations are fabulous. It might, however, inspire some imaginative rearrangement and relabelling of the food on plates at home …
Another debut picture-book is Farah Loves Mangos by author-illustrator Sarthak Sinha. Every year, Farah’s grandfather’s old mango tree produces all the mangos that Farah loves. Until one year there are none. Farah tries everything she can to make the tree fruit. She sings to it, pours milk on it, ties a scarf around its trunk. But to no avail. Meanwhile, her grandfather seems not to have taken an interest but busies himself making a swing which he fixes onto a branch. When Farah swings high, she can see right into the tree which is teeming with birds, bees, squirrels and many other creatures. Even if there will be no more mangos for her, Farah learns that there is still plenty of life to love in the tree. It’s a lovely lesson that what one values in things can change.
In my final choice, food is valued for its own sake. In Lunch at 10 Pomegranate Street: a collection of recipes to share by Felicita Sala, everyone in the building is cooking a special dish to share with their neighbours, and on each page is their recipe. For example, Miss Ishida is making Oyako Don, Mr Singh makes coconut dahl, and Mrs Greenpea cooks mini quiches. With beautiful illustrations, it’s a delicious celebration of food bringing communities from around the world together – and an inspiration to young cooks (and even I’ve spotted a new recipe I’d like to try!). All these books are on the shelves at Hart’s Books (www.hartsbooks.co.uk), in Saffron Walden. I hope you’ll enjoy reading them. If you’d prefer other things on the bookshop menu, Max and the team will be able to help you find something to suit the taste of the children (or adults) you’re buying for.

Harvest Festival
What is it?
A Harvest Festival is a celebration of the successful gathering of crops, a time to give thanks for the food grown and harvested. It’s a tradition observed across many cultures, often with feasting, decorating, and charitable giving. In the UK, it’s traditionally held around the time of the Harvest Moon. What to do with the little ones…? You could decorate some seasonal art, make a door wreath or leaf crown!
5th - Bonfire night
It doesn’t have to cost a fortune…. Watch a community fireworks display or do it cheaply at home with marshmallows and cozy outdoor treats instead.

when clutter begins to build up and time is in short supply. Toys underfoot, overstuffed wardrobes, chaotic kitchen cupboards, and surfaces that seem to attract mess no matter how often you tidy, it’s easy for even the most organised parents to feel out of control. That’s where LM Home Sort comes in.
Founded by Professional Home Organiser Liz Mansell, LM Home Sort helps busy families regain a sense of calm and order in their homes. Based in Saffron Walden and covering Essex, Cambridgeshire, and Hertfordshire, Liz works with you to create practical, personalised systems that are easy to maintain and tailored to your lifestyle. From full home edits to targeted decluttering sessions, seasonal wardrobe swaps to kitchen reorganisation and home staging, LM Home Sort offers a range of services to suit every family’s needs. Liz takes a thoughtful, friendly and non-judgmental approach, supporting you every step of the way. Whether you’re navigating life with toddlers, preparing to welcome a new baby, or trying to streamline a busy household with older children, she’ll help you create a home that works for you.
She understands that real homes are lived in, they don’t need to look like a show home, just function well for the people who live in them. By implementing manageable systems that the whole family can follow, Liz helps reduce stress, save time, and make day-to-day life run more smoothly.
With a background as a London-based personal assistant and a distinction in her Business Diploma in Professional Organising, Liz brings both efficiency and empathy to each project. Her calm, methodical approach, combined with a genuine understanding of the demands of family life, makes her the ideal partner for anyone looking to feel more in control at home.
If your home feels more overwhelming than welcoming, now is the perfect time to make a change.
Ready to take control of your space and simplify your family’s daily life?

Back to school? We’ve got your back www.saladdaysmag.uk
The new school year can bring excitement but we know that the extra expenses for uniforms, lunches or childcare can be daunting and quickly add up. If you’re feeling the financial burden or need advice that’s where we come in. Our friendly, knowledgeable advisers are here to help you find practical solutions and access further support if you need it, so you can feel more in control of your situation.
We can help you find ways to free up extra money by checking your benefits and entitlements - are you getting all the help you can? We can also help you in finding ways to cut essential bills, or helping you build a simple family budget.
Don’t struggle alone. Let’s make this school year a fresh start for everyone.
You can find more information online at www.uttlesfordca.org.uk. If you can’t easily access the internet, or need a little extra help, send us an email, give us a call, or pop into the Library in Dunmow, Stansted and Thaxted or the Old Schoolhouse in Takeley. If we aren’t there in person you can still speak to an adviser via our simple one-touch video link. Advice is always free and confidential.
