Education for parents and pet owners

So, how can I help you?

By Improving relationships:

I’m Georgie, a canine behaviourist and a Kids

Around Dogs professional.

Working with dogs and families, I became increasingly concerned about the lack of education children were receiving when it comes to dog safety. I was frequently seeing dogs being put under stressful situations, which if not dealt with, could escalate. Sadly, children are one of the highest risk groups for dog bites; so many of these could be avoided if the proper education was put into place.

I reached out to Debby Lucken (the founder of KAD) and haven’t looked back since. I am proud to be part of such a wonderful organisation, working with families in my local area.

I frequently work with dogs that may be having issues living within a family environment. A lot of the time, issues with dogs in the home can be due to miscommunications. Helping dogs feel understand, secure and having their needs met at home means for happier and healthier relationships all round.

By Providing education:

Children can find it hard understanding how to act around dogs and may act in ways that could endanger both them and the dog. I help children understand the basics of dog behaviour and ways to act appropriately around dogs. Whether the child is in a home with dogs or not, dog safety is always important. I also help children who have a fear of dogs, as many children may experience this and have a reduced quality of life as a result.

By advising and supporting:

Parents may struggle to find the right strategies and resources to keep their children safe around dogs. They may find it distressing to see their child so afraid of them, and unsure of what to do to combat this. As a parent myself, I am here to support you in this journey.

Curiosity – a Window into New Worlds

New worlds and new ways of thinking are the focus of the books I’ve chosen for this issue of Salad Days. I hope they will inspire you and the children in your care.

Where does curiosity start? In the brain, of course. So, my first choice is a book for anyone who is curious about the brain. See Inside Your Head by Alex Frith and Colin King, is a big Usborne Lift the Flap Board Book for children of about 6+. With double-page spreads headed ‘Control Room’, ‘Making Sense of the World’, Making Non-Sense of the World, ‘See Inside Someone Else’s Head’ and ‘When Brains Go Wrong’, the book covers the whole world of the brain, from the way neurons work, to the surprises caused by visual illusions which defy the brain’s expectations, to a simple explanation of how Alzheimer’s Disease wastes away the brain. This is a fascinating and satisfying account which not only goes a long way to answering the first simple questions about how we think but also opens a window into a new world of investigation for the really curious.

What about a window into a new world of colour? In Mixed by Arree Chung, there are three colours, Reds (the loudest), Yellows (the brightest, and Blues (the coolest). They live together in harmony until the Reds declare (loudly) that they are the best. The Yellows and the Blues argue otherwise, and their world splits apart into three separate unhappy factions until, one day, a Blue and a Yellow fall in love and produce a Green who is ‘bright like Yellow’, ‘calm like Blue’, but is also a colour all of her own. Everyone is fascinated. They begin to see new possibilities and, curious, they all start to mix, and create all the colours of the rainbow and many more besides! With vibrant illustrations and simple witty text, this book is a lovely introduction to colour and experiment (and, of course, to friendship, love, and acceptance!).

The World to Come by Robert Macfarlane, Johnny Flynn and Emily Sutton is a lyrical journey into the future as a young boy and his father walk together through an everchanging landscape. The window into their new world is the repeated refrain of the blackbird, ‘singing through the rising dark, singing of the world to come’ – surely an echo of the blackbird as the symbol hope in the children’s hymn, ‘Morning is Broken’. Robert Macfarlane’s choice of vocabulary is always exquisite, and readers will relish rolling their tongues over mesmeric phrases like, ‘we sat in the wish and the wave of our willow, wondering, wondering …’. Emily Sutton’s watercolour, pencil and collage illustrations perfectly match the lyricism of the text, making this picture book a treasure for both children and the adults who walk with them.

Finally, a book about the curiosity which not merely opened a window into a new world but sent shockwaves around it and revolutionised our understanding of it: Darwin and Hooker: a story of friendship, curiosity and discovery that changed the world by Alexandra Stewart and Joe Todd-Stanton. For older children, this is a lively and fascinating account of the lives of Charles Darwin and Joseph Hooker, one of the greatest friendships science has ever known, and how, between them, their curiosity led Darwin to his theory of evolution.

The Covers of my Book are Too Far Apart (and other grumbles) by Vivian French and Nigel Baines opens up the world of reading for children, even for those who think ‘Reading’s Rubbish’. All the people in the book experience reading differently – some like picture books, some like audio books (which ‘definitely count’ as reading), some learn that you don’t have to finish a book you don’t like. Superman reminds everyone that reading comics is also reading, and the racoon reminds people that reading, like learning to ride a bike, is hard at first – but gets easier. So many windows are opened into the world of books and the joy of reading that this book will surely inspire the most reluctant child.

Darwin (who was so determined to answer his own questions, he studied barnacles for seven years!) was endlessly curious. A deeply religious man, watching the duck-billed platypus in Australia behaving exactly as the water vole in Europe, he asked ‘why would an all-powerful God go to all the fuss and bother of creating the water vole for Europe and North America and the platypus for Australia? Why didn’t he just create one species and place it all over the world?’ His curiosity wouldn’t let his brain rest until he could explain the how and the why of evolution. As adventures of the mind go, this has to be one of the best, and this book is a brilliant window for children into not only the way evolution works but into the operation of a seriously curious mind.

I hope that these books might inspire curiosity in the minds of the children in your care. Their endless questions, which always seem to come at the busiest moments, are so important to nurture, opening windows into new worlds for them. All the books I have chosen are on the shelves at Hart’s Bookshop (www.hartsbooks.co.uk), in Saffron Walden where Max and his team are always happy to suggest books to both answer and inspire curious minds.

Small Acts, Big Impact: Helping Your Kids Bloom This Spring

As the days grow longer and the weather warms, spring offers a beautiful opportunity to nurture both your child’s growth and your connection with them. The small acts you engage in during this vibrant season can have a lasting impact on your child’s development - emotionally, physically, and socially.

One of the simplest ways to foster growth is by spending time outdoors. Planting a garden together can teach your child patience, responsibility, and the beauty of growth - both in nature and themselves. Even if space is limited, small potted plants or herbs can offer hands-on learning and a sense of accomplishment.

Introducing a new outdoor activity like bike rides, hiking, or nature walks gives your child a chance to develop physical strength and confidence while appreciating the world around them. These experiences can also be the perfect setting for meaningful conversations, allowing you to nurture emotional intelligence.

Small moments - like taking the time to listen, offering words of encouragement, or even just sharing a quiet moment in nature - are all ways to help your child bloom. This spring, remember that the simplest actions can help them grow in ways that last a lifetime.

Starting the Conversation: Educating Young Girls About Their Periods

As parents, one of the most important - and sometimes uncomfortable - conversations we need to have with our children is about puberty and menstruation. With girls starting their periods as early as age 9, it’s crucial to talk to them well before they experience it themselves. Early education can help remove the stigma and fear, fostering a sense of preparedness and confidence.

The first step is to normalise the topic. Use age-appropriate language and make the conversation feel natural, not awkward. Introduce the basics: what periods are, why they happen, and how it’s a part of growing up. You don’t need to dive into all the details right away, but providing a foundation will make the subject less intimidating when the time comes.

It’s also helpful to educate your daughter on what to expect physically and emotionally. Periods may come with cramps, mood swings, and physical changes. Preparing her for these can reduce anxiety when they occur. Use resources like books or videos specifically aimed at young girls to make the conversation more engaging. “The Care and Keeping of You” by American Girl is a popular choice.

Lastly, reassure her that periods are a natural part of life and nothing to be ashamed of. Open communication, patience, and the right tools will empower her to navigate this new chapter with confidence.

When it comes to practical tips, encourage your daughter to use period-friendly products that suit her comfort and lifestyle. Period pants / reusable underwear, for example, are a great option for young girls as they are discreet, comfortable, and easy to use. They’re a fantastic introduction to reusable menstrual products and can help her feel confident while she’s figuring out her routine.

Check out Modibodi for tweens and teens, they have school essentials and leak proof underwear / swimwear and activity wear which is discreet and perfect for first timers.

Celebrating Five Years of Growth, Fun, and Fitness at Pole Fitness with Simone

At Pole Fitness with Simone, we’ve spent the last five years cultivating a space where students can experience the joy of aerial fitness, build strength, and discover a sense of empowerment. Specializing in pole fitness and aerial hoop for adults, we’ve seen our community grow and thrive through the incredible benefits of these unique disciplines. But in 2024, we took an exciting leap forward by expanding our offerings to include Kids Circus Classes and Circus-Themed Birthday Parties. These classes introduce children to the fun and fitness of aerial arts, giving them the opportunity to experience a variety of aerial equipment, including the hammock, aerial hoop, and pole. Our Kids Circus Classes are designed for children ages 6-15 and offer a one-of-a-kind experience that builds not only strength and flexibility but also critical social and psychological skills.

The Benefits of Aerial Fitness for Kids

Aerial fitness is far more than a workout; it’s a way to nurture mental and emotional growth. For our young students, the benefits are wide-reaching and profound, encompassing everything from increased confidence to better physical health:

• Social Interaction & Teamwork: Children learn to work together, make new friends, and be part of a supportive community. This fosters a sense of belonging and camaraderie, crucial for social development.

• Improved Communication Skills: As kids engage with instructors and peers, they develop clearer communication, which translates into enhanced social interactions both in and out of the gym.

• Sense of Achievement: Learning and mastering new aerial skills helps boost self-esteem and gives children a sense of accomplishment, contributing to a more positive outlook on life.

• Better Sleep & Concentration: Physical activity like aerial fitness encourages healthier sleep patterns and improved focus during school and everyday tasks.

• Stress Relief & Confidence Building: Aerial arts offer a fun, non-competitive environment where kids can unwind, build their confidence, and reduce stress levels.

The Physiological Benefits of Aerial Fitness for Kids

Aerial fitness doesn’t just benefit the mind—it’s a full-body workout that promotes healthy physical development:

• Improved Cardiovascular Health: Aerial fitness helps reduce the risk of heart disease by promoting heart health, reducing high blood pressure, and encouraging overall cardiovascular fitness.

• Stronger Bones & Muscles: Regular aerial training stimulates bone growth and density, while helping to develop strong, flexible muscles that are vital for a child’s growth.

• Enhanced Motor Skills & Coordination: Through our diverse aerial training, kids improve their motor skills, coordination, and judgment, setting the foundation for better physical performance across all activities.

The Ultimate Circus Skills Class

What makes our Kids Circus Classes unique is the variety. We train on three different aerial disciplines every week, including the hammock, aerial hoop, and pole, ensuring that every class is fresh, engaging, and filled with new challenges. The structure of the class provides a perfect balance of warm-up, skill training, and cool-down. We spend 15 minutes on each piece of aerial equipment, giving them a chance to explore different skills and find what they love most. This variety keeps children engaged, stimulates their interest, and provides a rich, well-rounded experience in the world of circus arts. And because we train with such a wide range of equipment, we’ve noticed that many children with additional needs feel particularly drawn to our classes—they thrive in the stimulating, yet supportive, environment.

A Passion for Teaching and Learning

At the heart of Pole Fitness with Simone is our commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of our students. Simone, the owner and founder, has been dedicated to pole fitness since 2013 and has seen firsthand the transformative power of this art form. She holds a degree in Childhood and Youth Studies, bringing her passion for working with children into every class she teaches. Alongside Simone, our team of experienced instructors shares the same enthusiasm for teaching and aerial fitness, and we’re all committed to passing that passion onto our students, whether they’re kids or adults.

Safety is our priority, and all of our kids’ instructors are certified in First Aid, Safeguarding, and DBS-checked to ensure a safe and supportive environment for every student.

More Than Just Classes - We Host Birthday Parties Too!

In addition to our Kids Circus Classes, we also host circus-themed birthday parties for kids and adults alike. These fun, interactive parties allow guests to try their hand at aerial hoop, pole, and hammock, making them a unique and memorable way to celebrate any occasion. Whether you’re looking for a fun way to spend your child’s birthday or an exciting way to mark a special event, we’ve got you covered.

Taster Classes: A Fun Way to Start

If you’re curious about aerial fitness but unsure where to start, we offer taster classes for both kids and adults. Kids can try a taster class for just £10, and adults can experience pole or aerial hoop for only £7.50. It’s the perfect way to explore a new activity and see if it’s the right fit for you!

We’re excited to meet new faces and welcome you to our community. Whether you’re a child looking to try out aerial arts for the first time or an adult eager to dive into aerial fitness, there’s a place for you at Pole Fitness with Simone.

We can’t wait to see you in class soon!

The message and theme being shared this year; we are asking supporters to share on and around World Down Syndrome Day, 21 March 2025.

We call on all Governments to… #ImproveOurSupportSystems

Everyone needs support sometimes.

People with Down syndrome need support to live and be included in the community, like everyone else. Families also need support, as they are often supporting their family member with Down syndrome.

April

National Unicorn Day

Bake delicious, fanciful Unicorn cupcakes, watch a fantasy movie like The Chronicles of Narnia, or research the history of these elegant mythological creatures. What mythological creature has been more beloved over the centuries than the delightful unicorn? As incredible symbols of purity and enchantment, unicorns are loved by both children and adults alike and are integral parts of many fairy tales and legends.

For all the roles they’ve played in literature, cinematography, and art as a whole, unicorns more than deserve their own day.
