Autumn Skies and Pumpkin Pies

September marks the beginning of the new school year. All children will be returning to the classroom after a significant break from being in a typical school environment. They will also be facing the upheaval of a new transition - moving from one class to another with different teachers or moving from primary to secondary school. It can be an exciting but anxious beginning for our children. It is important to understand the impact these changes can have on individuals. Reinforcing positive messages to our children can help as can engaging in more activities outside of school as a family.

In just a few weeks the air will crisp up, leaves will fall and we will be searching for inspiration and advice to keep the children active, healthy and busy. Inside this issue you will find a list of kids clubs, indoor play centres, Pumpkin Patch spook activities, theatre productions, school open days, and interesting articles from local people and businesses giving lots of parental advice and info.

What ever you choose to do this autumn enjoy those beautiful skies and pumpkin pies.

Embracing Family Diversity: Evolving Language in Family Law

Family dynamics have evolved significantly in recent years, encompassing a wide array of structures and circumstances. Single parents, same-sex couples, and families formed through surrogacy have become an integral part of this diverse landscape.

A decade ago, a significant milestone was achieved when same-sex couples were granted the right to marry, breaking barriers and fostering inclusivity in family formation. Now, in 2023, new legislation addressing surrogacy laws further embraces family diversity, ensuring equal opportunities for all individuals to experience parenthood.

In tandem with these societal changes, family law language has adapted to be more inclusive and accessible. The terminology surrounding divorce cases underwent updates, replacing gender-specific terms with neutral alternatives. This not only streamlines legal proceedings but also promotes understanding and ease of access for all parties involved.

Moreover, the evolution of language extends to birth certificates and surrogacy agreements. The use of gender-neutral terms like “parent” or “guardian” is becoming more prevalent, acknowledging the complexity of modern parenthood. In surrogacy cases, “intended parents” now represent those seeking legal parenthood through surrogacy arrangements.

Promoting inclusive language in family law is crucial for fostering empathy and support within society. By recognising and embracing diverse family structures, we ensure that all individuals and families receive the respect and legal protection they deserve.

The changing landscape of family dynamics has prompted a corresponding evolution in legal language. The inclusion of various family structures, be it through same-sex marriage or surrogacy legislation, reflects a more compassionate and supportive approach to family law. By updating legal language to be more accessible and inclusive, family lawyers pave the way for a compassionate and supportive legal system, ensuring that every individual’s rights and emotions are respected and protected, regardless of their unique family circumstances.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS – BOOKS TO HELP START A NEW SCHOOL YEAR

With Autumn comes the start of a new school year after a summer’s fun and relaxation. It can be an intimidating prospect and may prompt many questions – which I hope this selection of picture books may help with.

As a starting point, Usborne Books (always a reliable resource) have produced Why do I have to go to school? a lift-the-flap board book which offers insightful and thought-provoking answers to the basic questions a child might ask. Written by Katie Daynes and illustrated by Marta Alvarez Miguens, its charming illustrations tie nicely with the limited text creating an easily accessible and reassuring book for pre-schoolers. For example, after ‘Why do I have to go to school, the next question is ‘Do I have to go every day?’ – a question surely in every child’s mind facing this new phase in their lives. The answer is ‘Yes, most Mondays to Fridays. But not if you’re unwell. Not at the weekend. And not when it’s the holidays’. In the illustrated calendar, there is a school trip marked, and a swimming class, sparking children’s interest in what might happen at school. I’m not sure I explained to my children in advance that school wasn’t a 365 day-a-year obligation, so no wonder they were daunted! Some fun answers, too, to other questions, like ‘Do Animals go to school?’.

Starting school might mean a new daily walk or a bus ride. Instead of this becoming a chore, it can be an expedition, learning about the world on the way to school. The Last Stop on Market Street by the award-winning team of Matt De La Pena and Christian Robinson is a vibrant tale which explores the lives of the people CJ and his Nana meet on their bus journey –learning important lessons in understanding difference and expressing kindness outside the classroom. It is raining while CJ is waiting at the bus stop. Cross that his friend is taken to school by car, CJ asks why they must wait in the rain. Nana says, ‘Trees get thirsty, too. Don’t you see that big one drinking through a straw?’, instantly distracting and intriguing him. When a blind man gets onto the bus, CJ asks about him. ‘Some people watch the world with their ears’ says Nana – and the man replies ‘That’s a fact. Their noses too! That’s a mighty fine perfume you’re wearing today, ma’am’. By the end of the book CJ realises that ‘nana always found beautiful where he never even thought to look’. This is a very special and heart-warming book for everyone. First published in the US, there are, as you probably noted in the passage above, some Americanisms – all adding to the celebration of the world’s rich tapestry. Of course, a new school means navigating new relationships. Rita and Ralph’s Rotten Day details a day which goes wrong for the two best friends, explores how they feel, and shows how they make up again. Best-selling American creative team Carmen Agra Deedy and Pete Oswald have produced a story with appealing repetitive motifs involving ‘heaps of trips up and down the hills of reconciliation’ which children will enjoy chanting while learning the difficult lesson of how to say sorry properly, and finding a way ‘to meet in the middle’.

www.saladdaysmag.uk 10 leisure and features

Some of the children joining a school may not only be new to the school but new to the country. And some of these may have experienced the trauma of fleeing their own country to safety. Hello! A Counting Book of Kindnesses is, as Nicolette Jones wrote in the Sunday Times, ‘a hopeful book about refugees and the kind gestures that give a journey to a new country a happy ending, told by counting one to ten’. Endorsed by Amnesty International, written by Hollis Kurman and illustrated by the award-winning French Moroccan artist Barroux, for whom children in need is a special theme, this warm, simple book should be on every school’s bookshelves. From the ‘1 boat helping us on our way’ to the ‘10 friends making us happy’, this book teaches children how even small acts of kindness can make a difference and will inspire them to think of how many other ways they could do to make someone new feel at home.

Asking questions and thinking of answers is, obviously, what learning is about. It can be scary to discover that there are no answers to some questions, or many possible answers to others. But it should also be exhilarating, empowering, and inspiring. Children’s imaginations should be set alight by the possibilities of open-ended questions. It is our responsibility as adults to ask them, and to encourage children to feel confident in exploring their answers. This is, after all, where stories begin.

Twenty Questions by Mac Barnett and Christian Robinson (featured twice in this issue’s reviews) is brilliantly engaging. With bold, simple illustrations combining collage and ink drawing, each double-page spread asks one short but rich question. For example, a picture of smiling-faced koalas in trees also shows a zookeeper who has her back to them all and her eyes closed. The question is ‘Which of these creatures is the zookeeper’s favourite?’. The book does not offer an answer – it is up to the reader who can look to see if there are any clues and if not (and there are no conclusive clues to be had), the reader can decide for themselves – and come to a different conclusion next time. Another one (just because I’m finding it hard to restrict myself to one example!) – a picture of a dark mountain with two scampering goats and a wooden door asks ‘Who is on the other side of this door?’. This question, of course, has proven very fruitful for Lewis Carroll, JRR Tolkein, CS Lewis, and many others …

I hope you will explore and enjoy these recommendations. All are on the shelves at Hart’s Books in Saffron Walden (www.hartsbooks.co.uk), where the knowledgeable bookshop staff will be able to help answer your questions about other book ideas for children.

NOTHING STANDARD ABOUT OUR VISION

WE CAN SLOW SHORT-SIGHTEDNESS SPORTS VISION PROTECTION

Myopia, or short-sightedness, is a common visual problem effecting roughly a third of the UK population, resulting in blurred distance vision.

Myopia management uses specifically designed spectacle or contact lenses to slow the rate at which myopia develops. It is important as it may reduce the risk of vision threatening complications, associated with high myopia, later in life. New myopia management products are being brought to market regularly and here, at DH Thomas, we have access to them all, as they become available.

Popcorn Cheesecake

The base ingredients:

. Digestive Biscuits 370g

. Butter melted or use plant oil instead -170g

Cheesecake Ingredients:

. Full fat soft cheese 600g

. Icing sugar 100g

. Double cream 284ml

. 1 vanilla pod

Method for base:

Butter and line the bottom of your tin with baking parchment. Put the digestives in a plastic bag and crush to crumbs using a rolling pin. Transfer the crumbs to a bowl, then pour over the melted butter. Mix throughly until the crumbs are completely coasted. Tip them into the tin and press firmly down into the base to create an even layer. Chill in the fridge for 1 hour.

Method:

Slice the vanilla pod in half lengthways, scrape out the seeds using the back of a knife into a small bowl. Pour the cream into another bowl and mix until it starts to thicken to soft peaks.

Place the soft cheese, icing sugar and vanilla pod into a separate bowl and beat for 2 mins with an electric mixer until the mixture is smooth. Tip in the double cream and fold it into the soft cream mix. You’re looking for it to be thickenedenough to hold its shape when you tip the bowl upside down. Spoon the mix onto he biscuit base.

Pure Rhythm School of Performing Arts

On July 13th & 15th Pure Rhythm ran four sell-out performances of their 20year Anniversary show. Aged 7-18 a cast of 62 performed numbers from shows performed over the years from Alice to Seussical, Honk and many more all linked together by humorous drama.

Numerous ex-students and teachers came back to watch. On the last night a video was played of what Pure Rhythm had meant to them over the past twenty years. Two leaving students celebrated securing places for top performing arts colleges. We will continue to support and follow their path as always. Pure Rhythm is very much a family feel business and the love and support during the run made it an incredible time for myself and staff involved. “Pure Rhythm is so much more than a job to me, it’s my life and I look forward to the next 20 years!

Uttlesford Citizens Advice - why volunteer?

Uttlesford Citizens Advice is fortunate to have a great team of volunteers - all local people who give their time, skills and experience to keep our service running.

Our volunteers come from, understand and reflect the communities we serve. They connect us to the community, help us meet demand for advice and truly enhance our organisation by bringing a wide range of knowledge and lived experiences that can help shape our services and improve the support that we give to our clients.

We have over 70 volunteers currently, but we still need new volunteers every year to help us meet the growing demand for advice. Volunteering is a great way to pick up skills, make friends and feel part of an enthusiastic team. And it’s not just worthwhile; volunteering can also be fantastic fun and hugely rewarding. Your gift of time is precious and makes those receiving it feel valued.

We welcome people from all walks of life, like the people who use our services. We value diversity, promote equality and inclusivity. We want to help all our volunteers develop and progress towards their goals, whatever these are.

If you would like to find out more about our range of volunteer roles, we would love to hear from you! You don’t need any particular skills or experience for most of our roles as all volunteers receive an induction and comprehensive, free, high quality training to ensure you have the knowledge and confidence to fulfil your role.

For further information, please visit our website, www.uttlesfordca.org.uk, email jo.hancock@uttlesfordca.org.uk or call 01799 618840.

Wren’s Friends

-starring Wren and her Shih-Tsu

Humphrey - is a joyful story book about being vegan by local author Matt Claydon and beautifully illustrated by Danielle Hatton.

It explores the benefits of a vegan lifestyle and the importance of showing empathy and compassion to our animal friends.

Having found the majority of kids vegan books to be somewhat macabre and depressing, Matt decided to picture Veganism in a much more upbeat and fun light - whilst being thought provoking for both parent and child.

It’s an excellent read for any child/adult vegan or not and a great way to encourage discussion on ethics, health and our environment.

This wonderful book is available on Amazon.
