A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF ST. GEORGE’S SCHOOL 2021-22

BUILDING FINE YOUNG MEN. ONE BOY AT A TIME.

ST. GEORGE’S SCHOOL

is a strong academic university preparatory institution with selective entrance standards. Offering a Boarding Program for Grades 8–12 and a Day Program for Kindergarten to Grade 12, St. George’s is committed to its mission of “Building Fine Young Men. One Boy At a Time.” The School encourages the pursuit of excellence in all endeavours, and is committed to the healthy growth of body, mind, and spirit. Character development, leadership, and service opportunities are integral to the School’s mission.

GUIDING EDUCATIONAL PRINCIPLES

Since the School’s founding in 1930, the concept of the “well-rounded boy” has been the defining characteristic of a St. George’s education. Mindful of their ethical, intellectual, physical, and social development, we educate and support boys to achieve fulfilling lives, here and after graduation, to be lifelong learners, and to engage meaningfully with their communities.

OUR CORE VALUES

EMPATHY is the ability to move beyond ourselves, to identify with others, to walk a mile in another’s shoes.

HUMILITY is the ability to be humble, not to be big-headed or boastful, and to recognize that we all still have a lot to learn.

INTEGRITY

is an extension of honesty; it is doing the right thing even if no one is watching.

RESPECT

is feeling regard and even admiration for yourself and for others; it is being thoughtful and considerate of others.

RESPONSIBILITY

is being accountable, doing our best to meet our commitments, and to keep our word.

RESILIENCE

is an extension of courage. It’s the ability to recover quickly, and to not give up when beset by setbacks and disappointments.

After many years of visioning and planning, spectacular, once-in-a-generation buildings are rising on our senior campus. Watching the buildings take shape, step by step, and imagining the opportunities they open up, reminds us of the scope of ambition this School has for its future.

This year, our boys stepped back into a more fulsome St. George’s experience in which our students thrive, culminating with an in-person Graduation Ceremony full of optimism and celebration. It was wonderful to be able to gather together as a community after the past few years of pandemic restrictions and the resulting challenges to student life.

On a personal level, this report captures a year in which, through the welcome and care of the Saints community, Sue and I found our place within our School, confirming to me through my own experience the lived values of this School. This reinforced for me the need to ensure those values are held and strengthened as we step forward.

Despite the challenges we are surrounded by and the dynamics of increasingly rapid societal change, this Annual Report highlights a year in which St. George’s School stepped up — readying itself for the next decade and our responsibilities of stewardship and leadership: stewardship of our students’ individual journeys and the imbuing of the traits of leadership in our boys.

I’d like to acknowledge and thank our staff and faculty for the strength of their commitment and care. Similarly, I recognize the time given and devotion shown by all the members of our four Boards. And finally, I’d like to thank our families and extended community for their support of St. George’s School and the work we do.

These are exciting times. As you read this report and consider the year it captures, I suggest it speaks equally of the opportunities we have ahead of us. I look forward to stepping into that future together.

This Annual Report captures a year during which we were able to step forward again, and lean into the important work we have committed to as we approach our 100th anniversary.

Welcome Back!

This Annual Report comes at a time of remarkable transition.

David Young, our Head of School, together with his wife Sue, completed their first full year at St. George’s School. Happily, this was an extremely successful start, as can be seen in the many detailed metrics set out in this Report. Beyond the numbers, lists, and rankings though, it’s clear that the School, and all of us, are emerging from a long period of being locked down and limited by the pandemic. Renewal is in the air!

Last year’s amazing Grads of 2022 (158 strong) achieved 787 university acceptances from 144 institutions around the world. This is truly a remarkable accomplishment, and speaks to our School’s resilience, the quality of our educators, and also the bespoke approach to finding the perfect fit for each graduating fine young man. We wish all the Grads tremendous success as they take the lessons they learned here at Saints on to the next chapters in their lives. Meanwhile, the Grads of 2023 are now walking the halls, set to make their own unique mark during their final year with us.

Topside, the dreams of our new buildings are every day becoming a reality. The shapes and spaces are emerging, as construction remains on track for completion late next year. This generational effort has seen countless hours by our past and present school leaders, Board members and trustees, volunteers, and many donors (hopefully including or soon-to-include YOU, dear reader)!

Inside our current buildings, great work continues. Our boys are thriving. Our educators are motivated, engaged, and passionate about our mission. We have again been honoured as one of the Top Employers in BC (11th straight year)! Our Leadership Team is second to none.

This is also a time of even greater commitment and ambition. We have engaged in the planning phases to work together on our next Strategic Plan — more will be shared on this in the coming months. This plan will attempt to guide us through the many challenges ahead of us, as we approach our 100th year in 2030.

Thank you to Mr. Young and our dedicated team. Thank you as well to the many hard-working members of our Foundation, SGPA, OBA, and Society Boards, with whom I remain honoured and grateful to serve

A WORLD OF ACADEMICS

EDUCATION AT ST. GEORGE’S SCHOOL

Beginning in Kindergarten, students build a strong academic foundation while focusing on personal growth and social, emotional learning. Soft skills such as critical thinking, communication, and creativity are embedded in all we do, creating kind, resilient young learners with a strong sense of character. When boys enter the Senior School, this foundation is expanded in an environment dedicated to preparing students for lives full of purpose, including postsecondary endeavours, community contribution, and personal growth.

2021–22 was a period of transition. The students were delighted as many activities that were restricted during the pandemic returned. We are grateful for the efforts and enthusiasm of our staff and faculty who found ways to provide a worldclass education despite a myriad of challenges and to re-start various opportunities and events for our students in a safe setting.

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES AT ST. GEORGE’S SCHOOL

A unique and defining feature of St. George’s School is the breadth and depth of our programs. This is never more evident than in the selection of elective clubs & activities offered to our boys at lunchtime, after school, and on the weekends. Some clubs travel to competitions out of town for one to two weeks, even through the holidays. Every club or activity has at least one faculty or staff sponsor, many offer leadership opportunities for students, and up to 98% of the boys participate in one or more co-curricular activities at both Schools.

A WORLD TO EXPLORE

OUTDOOR EDUCATION AT ST. GEORGE’S SCHOOL

As we started to see a return to ‘normal’ throughout the 2021-22 school year, the Outdoor Education Department set to work on rebuilding authentic student connections while exploring the outdoors. We were thrilled to be able to offer day trips and overnight trips to camps as well as multi-day expeditions. Our students were excited to once again explore the outdoors and the land that they live and learn on. Students bonded over shared experiences, helped each other overcome challenges, and learned new limits for themselves.

Throughout the year, we were able to offer outdoor experiences to all students in Kindergarten–Grade 10 as well as bring our Discovery Program back to its full form, which included a 21-day final expedition. Grades 10, 11, and 12 students were also offered opportunities to embark on Leadership Roles in the Outdoor Education Program. It was an amazing year, and our students should be proud of their accomplishments.

ATHLETICS PROGRAM AT ST. GEORGE’S SCHOOL

BUILDING BODIES & MINDS

OUR ATHLETICS PROGRAM

More than 80 years ago, we recognized the educational value of including a strong Athletics Program for boys at St. George’s School. Decades later, we offer a diverse array of competitive and recreational programs to challenge our boys athletically and socially. Our coaches work to ensure that positive character development is always integrated into each boy’s experience on and off the field, during practices, games, tournaments, and on trips and tours. The ‘pursuit of excellence’ is a key element in the structure of our competitive sport programs, ensuring our athletes are prepared to continue their growth and development at the next level. Great memories, wonderful experiences, and strong relationships are expected outcomes from our co-curricular Athletics Program.

OFFERED AT THE JUNIOR AND SENIOR SCHOOL COMBINED

The School supports all levels of involvement with all of our sports and co-curricular programs. Students are encouraged to be multi-sport athletes and try new sports or activities to broaden their experiences and challenge their bodies and minds. From a focus on the pursuit of excellence in highly challenging and complex training and competition that could lead to national and international experiences, to a recreational level where enjoyment is the primary goal — all student-athletes and coaches are encouraged to integrate the School’s Core Values of empathy, humility, integrity, resiliency, respect, and responsibility into their involvement in all aspects of our sports program.

PHYSICAL HEALTH AND EDUCATION

Managing Physical Health and Education (PHE) was challenging due to COVID-19 guidelines, but we continued to provide our students with as full a curriculum as possible. Boys were organized into cohorts or learning groups and were able to experience a full range of activities. Within instructional classes, students enjoyed opportunities to practice new skills, refine old ones, and test their skills in game situations.

Wing Games continued to provide a healthy level of competition, and we also found opportunities for enrichment activities like dance to take place. Our hallmark for the year was resilience!

A WORLD OF ARTISTIC VISION

THE ARTS AND APPLIED DESIGN, SKILLS AND TECHNOLOGY AT ST. GEORGE’S SCHOOL

Whether it’s designing/building/lighting stage sets, acting, creating high-tech animation, painting, drawing, sculpting, or programming, St. George’s students love to explore and develop their talents. The choices at our School are unparalleled and include opportunities to act in semi-professional productions; play in one of ten major bands and ensembles; take a master class with renowned international artists and musicians; compete for one of the much-prized arts scholarships; or exhibit their work publicly. Students are also creatively engaged in applied design skills through business simulations and competitions, building robots, writing code, or crafting exquisite pieces in our woodshop.

PORTFOLIO DAY

Because of the pandemic, Portfolio Day was held online. This is a special day for St. George’s students applying to art schools as representatives from top-end schools meet with our students to provide one-on-one critiques of each artist’s work in preparation for their portfolio submission. As a result, ten students from the Class of 2022 were accepted to art schools last year.

Students were encouraged to consider the following when preparing to make a decision about studying art in a post-secondary institution:

• Research the different schools and their programs, as not all schools offer the same programs.

• If they know the program interests them, research which schools have that program.

• If they are interested in a double major, determine which programs can be combined with art.

• Determine the portfolio requirements for their schools of interest.

• Determine other requirements needed. (Essays, letters, specialized portfolio challenges, etc.)

• Note the deadlines for Portfolio submissions.

Grade 7s had a special role in the Remembrance Day Ceremony: each boy made an individual recording of O Canada that was then combined into a large multimedia project featuring 88 students playing together in a virtual performance. In May, the Junior School presented the intermediate musical, The Claw, to live audiences, with 46 boys in Grades 4–7 participating in three performances. The primary grades also produced their own musical theatre project — Pirates: A Musical! — for friends and family, with every student participating.

HIGHLIGHTS FOR 2021-22

Coming out of the pandemic restrictions, our students relished in the opportunity to learn and grow from experiences in the community. This year, the themes of Global Stewardship were climate change, food security, sustainability, land stewardship, poverty reduction and inequality, social justice, and consumption and production. Flex Days provided time for workshops exploring social justice, sustainability, and global education and enabled students to partake in experiential learning to develop empathy, care, and passion for their community.

Many community projects were launched by passionate students who wanted to make a difference in their communities. Two such projects were Shellevate, a project working with Sodexo to repurpose egg shells into fertilizer; and Fair for All, which began by refurbishing used computers to provide devices to Thunderbird Elementary students during remote learning, and grew to offering online classes in computer programming and more.

One of the major highlights of the year was the success of the annual Hamper Drive. Prompted to reevaluate how we partner with our recipient families and agencies in the midst of COVID-19 restrictions, the entire St. George’s community rallied together to provide tremendous financial support for our greater community. More than 1000 individuals in nearly 250 families received grocery gift cards and care packages to help provide for their needs during the holidays. We look forward to the 2022 Hamper Drive when we will be able to more fully engage with the wider Saints community in the implementation of communitybuilding traditions.

The SGPA organized many parent and student volunteers (and our good neighbour, Stong’s Market) to collect donations for those affected by the historic flooding last winter. With their donations, enthusiasm, muscle, and collective goodwill, everyone crammed the van — and more! Four school vehicles (two vans, a trailer, and a school bus) headed to Chilliwack to support food banks in the Fraser Valley and deliver 10,000 canned food items of proteins, veggies, fruit, and soup. The one-week campaign following the Hamper Drive and prior to Winter Break produced incredible results.

A WORLD OF TRADITIONS

THE OBA ALUMNI

OBA

ALUMNI

WE ARE GENERATIONS

The OBA Alumni, incorporated in 1950, is a not-for-profit society that works closely with St. George’s School and its Boards to build connections between Alumni and the School as well as foster strong personal and professional relationships within our community. The OBA recognizes any student who has completed one full year at St. George’s School as an OBA Alumnus. Each year, over 150 new Alumni are added to the OBA community, which has an excess of 7000 members around the world. The OBA Alumni Mission Statement is “to inspire and strengthen the engagement of Alumni with St. George’s School and Alumni with each other.”

OBA ALUMNI

MISSION STATEMENT

To inspire and strengthen the engagement of Alumni with St. George’s School and of the Alumni with each other.

The OBA Alumni is a vibrant and interactive community with a strong presence on Georgian Connect, LinkedIn, Instagram, and other social media platforms. The group aims to connect its various generations through mentorship and friendship. Reunion events take place regularly in Vancouver, Hong Kong, Toronto, and New York as well as Los Angeles, San Francisco, and London, England — all of which provide valuable in-person connection points for Alumni. Every year, Alumni ‘give back’ with their time and expertise through coaching, speaking engagements, and participation in events like Careers Day and ArtsWeek as well as generous financial support. They are proud to support the School’s goal of continual improvement.

GEORGIAN
Dean & Lynette O’Leary Kevin & Ssonia Ong

St. George’s School enjoys two beautiful and spacious campuses adjacent to the 2000 acres of Pacific Spirit Park in the Dunbar neighbourhood of Vancouver, British Columbia. Our Campus Master Plan was developed to ensure our school community’s facility needs will be met for decades to come. The plan will be executed by way of a multi-phased fundraising campaign which began in 2014; phase I of the campaign was completed in 2016, surpassing the initial goal of $40 million. Already completed or underway are major restoration projects for our two heritage buildings and renovations of all classrooms at the Junior School, including the library. Most significantly, construction of the transformational new senior campus has begun.
