What don’t you see?

Recently I did not see the Abbey, a massive Benedictine church in Subiaco Arkansas. I entered the grounds of Subiaco, but only saw the colossal school buildings of the Academy. Later that same day, I didn’t see the gate to the walking trails of Hesychia House of Prayer.

I missed the Abbey because I drove in on a road that led only to the school. As I looked up the slope, I couldn’t see the Abbey behind. On my way to the walking trails, I stepped off the path mown through the field as I swerved to avoid a herd of cows munching on the grass.

What to others is obvious was hidden to me.

A day later, I got a ride to a concert at Subiaco Abbey. I didn’t have to find my way; I was shown the way. We drove into a road past the one I had entered. We turned into the parking lot, at the end of which was the Abbey in full splendor.

Why is it that we cannot see? Perhaps it is hidden behind something else, and we need a different perspective, a different path, or someone to show us the way.

Perhaps we wander around in fear and come upon something surprising and wonderful that we didn’t expect. Maybe we need to use other senses, other people, other stories to orient us.

My father began planning for my parent’s “golden years” early in his career as he hoped they could be Residents of a “home” like Saint Simeon’s.

As I walked through fields and trees, I kept looking for something familiar. Instead I discovered an area full of cow bones… that was disorienting! I couldn’t find the gate, but I heard road sounds from where I entered the field. The sun was setting, and I figured that I needed to keep it on my right. Just as I was about to call for help, there was the purple gate to the trails.

I am forever grateful that he created a plan that brought comfort and peace to our family during the most challenging time in life. Saint Simeon’s staff made the end of his life so special.”

What aren’t you seeing this Christmas? Is the love of God hidden behind something else? Do you need help changing your perspective and someone to show you the way? Are you fearful? Perhaps the unexpected will bring you to wonder.

To the shepherds in the field, the angel brought good news of great joy about a Savior born in Bethlehem…hidden in a stable. And they said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.”

—Luke 2:15 This Christmas, may you be given eyes to see the wonder of God’s love.
