The Rev. Susanne Methven, Chaplain
Do you need more robust prayers in times such as these? Saint Simeon’s residents have been studying prayers uttered in the Hebrew Bible. Here are some ideas for strengthening your prayers:
Be like Abraham, who models persistence in prayer when he bargained with God for the fate of Sodom. (Genesis 18:22-33)
Be like Moses, who calls on God’s power to be great in the way God promised: “slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression.” (Numbers 14:13-24)
Be like Hannah, whose prayer was so fervent that Eli, the priest, thought she was drunk! (1 Samuel 2:1-10)
Be like David, who had the humility to acknowledge his own unworthiness, as well as the incomparability of God. “You are great, O Lord, for there is not one like you, and there is no God beside you.” (2 Samuel 7:18-29)
Be like Solomon to whom God says, “Ask what I should give you.” Instead of asking for what would benefit himself, Solomon asked for wisdom to “govern your people, able to discern between good and evil.” (1 Kings 3:5-15)
These Hebrew people said their prayers and assumed that God would hear them. They prayed boldly for God to act. They prayed with a both-and: they lamented their circumstances, and they praised God. They knew that God is free to act; they knew God wants human partners.
In times such as these, we need fewer polite prayers. We need prayers that are honest and urgent. We need to pray not only as individuals but in community, remembering how God has acted in the past and praying boldly for God’s partnership with us now.
Let us pray without ceasing and as robustly as our ancestors in faith did.

Courtney Wallis, Accounts Receivable Specialist
Courtney went above and beyond. She is very pleasant and helpful. She followed up in a timely fashion.
—Bill , son of Medical Resort patient
One of your employees went above and beyond to help us. Though we were not able to visit the facility right away because of staff availability, Michael had us pull around the front gate and truly listened to what we needed and gave us contacts for the people we needed to talk to in order to get dad admitted. He was compassionate and made this difficult time much easier to bear. Since he was our first face to face contact at Saint Simeon’s, meeting him set the stage for everything else to follow. During the days that followed, Michael’s name was brought up in family discussions several times, always priaising his approach to our family. He is one of the good ones.
