Prehistoric Clay Fossil On Loan
A few years ago, “Old Man” Hughes spent over two and a half hours freeing this amazing prehistoric clay fossil “monopod” or snail from the clay of Lake Texoma’s Soldier Creek Bay. He says, “You, too, can do this!”
He has graciously placed the 22” across, 60-pound fossil on display in the Reflections Courtyard for all to enjoy. If you see him, be sure to ask him about it!
Eclipse Watch Parties Get Everyone Involved
On April 8th, residents, staff, family members, and even some staff family members enjoyed various eclipse watch parties all over our community. Although it wasn’t a total solar eclipse in our area, it was still a pretty amazing sight to see!

THE CHAPLAIN’S CHAT
The Rev. Susanne Methven, Chaplain
Dearly beloved, we have come together…. ...to hear his holy Word... (BCP, 79).
At Saint Simeon’s our Sunday scripture texts each week are based on the Revised Common Lectionary. Over a three-year period, we hear the story of Jesus from Matthew (Year A), Mark (Year B), and Luke (Year C). Readings from John are included in all three years. We are currently in Year B and reading from Mark’s gospel. While the RCL provides four texts, we use only two: the psalm and the gospel because “the mind can absorb what the seat can endure”! The selections of scripture texts tell the long arc of God’s story: God’s love in creating, redeeming, and sustaining creation and human beings.
The Bible is included in our weekly prayer services as well. During 2023 and into early 2024, Assisted Living has used The Path: A Journey through the Bible to read significant excerpts from the entire Bible. We have come to a deeper understanding of the family history of the Israelites. We have read the gospels and most of the epistles. We will complete the study, probably by the time you are reading this newsletter, by reading from Revelation. In Health Care and Memory Center our Bible studies have focused on the lives of people in the Bible or those since then who exemplify ways of being faithful (or not!). In addition, we have studied the Lord’s Prayer phrase by phrase. During November, we focused on prayers of thanksgiving found in The Book of Common Prayer.
In February and March this year, we used a Lenten series called “Wandering Heart: Figuring out faith with Peter” from sanctifiedart.org for all at Saint Simeon’s. We read and discussed Peter’s journey in faith from becoming a disciple to calling Jesus the Messiah to denying Jesus to peering into the empty tomb. His wandering path of faith is no different from ours, and, like Peter, Jesus will ask us if we love him and are willing to serve him. In a stretch for some, we also sang new hymns composed to familiar tunes, heard poetry, and examined artistic responses to the Bible readings.
On Good Friday we set up a Stations of Peter: five episodes Peter had with Jesus in the last days and hours of his life. The Stations included the Biblical texts from John’s gospel, a piece of art with the artist’s statement, and a hymn for each text.
As we debriefed the Wandering Heart experience, some liked the looser structure of our prayer services, others would have preferred more traditional Western art. We agreed that Peter is a complex human being and that the series asked us to wrestle with his and our journeys of faith. The conversations and sharing have been rich!
Staff also had the opportunity to participate in this Lent series through weekly emails of the gospel text, as well as suggestions on ways to contemplate the reading each week with various kinds of centering prayer—with music, in silence, with breath, or with gentle movement—as well as the weekly art.
All services at Saint Simeon’s include scripture. All scripture is written for our learning. We pray to “hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them” (BCP, 236) so that we may become the Good News we read.
