THE CHAPLAIN’S CHAT
The Rev. Susanne Methven, Chaplain

Dearly beloved, we have come together….
…to ask, for ourselves, and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation (BCP, 79).
Prayer and thanksgiving are important to worship at Saint Simeon’s. On Sundays, we include the Prayers of the People, in which we pray for the universal church and its mission; for the nations of the world and all in authority; for the welfare of the world; for the concerns of the local community; for those who suffer and those in any trouble; and for the departed. Each week we pray for a church or ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma, and then send them a card. We pray for those celebrating birthdays. We give thanks for any resident who has died and pray for families who mourn. At every service we pray the Lord’s Prayer.
Each time we worship, I ask each person if they have a prayer or a thanksgiving to share. This is my favorite part of praying together. We are thankful: for being able to gather, for our families and friends, for those who work at Saint Simeon’s, for the beauty of the day, and for waking up. Residents sometimes ask for prayers for their own needs or those of their families. We have prayed for our troops, first responders, those working outside in inclement weather, teachers, and many more. When some don’t know what to pray, we include thanks for the Holy Spirit who listens to what is on our hearts and for God who hears us. We usually give thanks for naps and sleep, a gift from God . At the suggestion of one of our residents, we have also started to sing our “Amen” to each other’s prayers. (Sing Amen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8jmTSIepjE)
Every August, we have Stations of School Prayer. We pray for teachers, students, student families, administrators, counselors, staff, and school safety. We pray for the eleven schools near Saint Simeon’s and for the five Episcopal schools in Oklahoma. Our Stations of School Prayer are now being used by others in Oklahoma City and Miami. In October around St. Francis Day, we bless the peacocks and turtles at Saint Simeon’s, as well as Paw Pals’ therapy dogs, who were dressed in costumes for Halloween in 2023! Prayers are prepared during Advent and Lent for our staff. Periodically, we bless resident rooms and roommates. I am honored to pray with family and residents as they reach the end of their lives. Quarterly and annually, we hold a Remembrance Service for residents who have died. We remember our resident by name, light a candle, and ring a chime. During COVID, residents sent prayer cards to prisoners at Eddie Warrior and Jess Dunn Correctional Facilities in Taft, OK.
Saint Simeon’s is a praying place. We pray together often. We ask, in the words of St. Chrysostom,
Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen (BCP, 102).
