Carnival By The Straits 2023

10 June 2023

Our long-awaited and highly-anticipated event, Carnival By The Straits was back again on 10 June, with the theme "High Tides, Good Vibes" from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm.

The carnival was filled with activities such as seasports rides, exciting carnival games with attractive prizes to be won. This time, ticket holders were entitled to a complimentary 10 minute head and shoulder massage, a free movie screening session as well as a free ice pop.

To engage the participants, the DJ, Solomon Tneo decided to host mini carnival game competitions. Many of our contestants tried to aim for the bullseye but missed. In the end, a gutsy, young girl managed to hit the bullseye!

Our skilful winner walked away with our Grand Prize, a giant teddy bear!

Our wide array of stalls also added colours to our event with their interesting and unique handmade gifts as well as local delights such as Fried Rice.

Highlight of the carnival! There was a dizzying array of seasports activities for thrill seekers, which included a Banana Boat Ride, Jet Ski Ride, RHIB Boat Ride, Ski Tube Ride as well as an Inflatable Trampoline. Despite the sweltering heat, it did not dampen the mood of our attendees - many of them came as early as 10am to try out some of our exhilarating rides. Children shrieked with squeals of delight as the Ski Tube glided swiftly through the water at a 45 degree angle.

GOOD JOB!

Day 1

19th SAFYC Regatta

29 - 30 April 2023 (Optimist)

Similar to the Dingy race, wind was light and shifty. The first race saw its start at 12.35 pm. Despite challenging (light) wind conditions, the Race Official managed to run a total of 3 races for the day before Cat 1 stormed on us.

Day 2

Day 2 experienced no wind in the morning with AP flag up at 10.00 pm. Subsequently, Cat 1 rolled in and the sailors got to launch only after lunch. However, it was uneventful, and there was no racing for the day. The Optimist class concluded with only 3 races from the previous day.

SING-SIAM REGATTA

20 - 25 April 2023

This year’s Sing-Siam Regatta was held in Singapore. We were so happy to meet our Thai friends again after the previous Sing-Siam Regatta in Sattahip!

Day 1 – Thursday, 20 April 2023

Our Thai friends embarked on their journey to Singapore, and Coach Ignatius welcomed them at Changi Airport. They then made their way to SAF Yacht Club and were allocated their accommodations before the start of the Welcome Dinner.

22 SAF YACHT CLUB BOSUN'S CALL

Day 2 – Friday, 21 April 2023

The bus arrived at 9.00 am to send our visitors to NSRCC Seasports Centre to draw their equipments. 2.00 pm was the first warning of the Practice Race where our Singaporean Sailors were welcomed to participate as well. However, the race started slightly later as we had to facilitate some Sailor’s boat movements from NSC too. There were fair winds that day.

After the practice race, the Thais treated us to a Thank You Dinner at SAF Yacht Club’s Poolside Lounge. It was a great dinner where old friends from previous years’ Sing-Siam Regattas also came by. Big THANK YOU to our Thai friends for the dinner!

SAF YACHT CLUB BOSUN'S CALL 23

Day 3 – Saturday, 22 April 2023

We started our day with our customary Team Racing for both Optimist and ILCA 7. After a hard-fought battle between Team Elephant and Team Lion, Team Elephant eventually won for the Optimist and ILCA 7 classes. After a quick lunch break, the Sailors were out again for Fleet Racing. The Race Committee managed to run 2 races despite the shifty conditions.

After a day of racing, the Parents surprised our Thai guests with a BBQ dinner at NSRCC Seasports Centre! A big THANK YOU to all the parents who put this together!

24 SAF YACHT CLUB BOSUN'S CALL
Work Hard Play Hard!

Day 4 – Sunday, 23 April 2023

After a long wait due to the lack of winds, the Race Committee eventually launched the sailors slightly after 12.00 pm. We manage to run 3 races for the ILCAs. However due to the lack of winds and strong currents, the Optimist were unable to start till the Race Committee shifted the course closer to shore. However, during race 2, there was a building storm which brought the winds up to more than 20 knots. Eventually, the Race Committee decided to abandon the 2nd race of the day and send all the sailors back to shore, safe and sound. Despite the scary weather, all the sailors, especially the Thais enjoyed their races in varying conditions throughout the day.

The Closing and Prize Giving Dinner was held at SAFYC Lazarus Ballroom. Both Vice Commodore, COL Justiin Ang, and RADM Pamon Kuanpradit, gave their closing speeches before the dinner and prize giving ceremony started. The night ended late with many of us sharing stories, jokes, and laughter.

Day 5 – Monday, 24 April 2023

An exciting day, it's finally R&R Day! The bus picked us up at 10.00 am, and we brought our Thai friends to Xtreme Sailing Products to purchase their sailing gear. After that, we went to Farrer Park MRT station by bus where the group split up – with the adults headed to Mustafa Shopping Centre for some retail therapy while the kids went to Gardens by the Bay with Coach Ignatius, and HR Manager, Ms. Peggy Fam.

Day 6 – Tuesday, 25 April 2023

After some exciting few days, it was time to bid farewell to our friends. The VIPs departed earlier, while the rest of the group had an evening flight. The bus came at 3.00 pm to send them to the Airport with Seasports Manager, Jason Swee, as a chaperone. SAF Yacht Club’s legal advisor, Mr. Nicholas Cheong, was also present at the airport to send our friends off.

We wish our Thai friends fair winds and following seas, and we look forward to seeing them again at the next Sing-Siam Regatta.

Sing-Siam Regatta 2024 is set to be in November next year, so stay tuned!

We would also like to thank our Thai friends, Singaporean Sailors, and Parent Volunteers for making this event a success!

• Became No. 1 of Singapore Silver Fleet in January 2021

• 392nd at 2022 Lake Garda Meet, Italy

• 3rd in U12 at 2022 Eastern Seaboard Regatta at Royal Varuna Yacht Club, Thailand

• 15th at 2023 SAFYC Regatta

• 3rd overall at 2023 Scallywag Foundation Regatta at Hebe Haven Yacht Club, Hong Kong

Q1: How did your sailing journey come about? Back when I was still living in Hong Kong, I had some friends who were sailors and when I was six years old I decided to give it a try and immediately started to like sailing. I was lucky to have the opportunity to start sailing at a very young age.

Q2: What’s your favourite aspect of sailing?

My favourite aspect of sailing is the technicality of the sport; having full control of your boat all the way, until past the finish line.

Q3: What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club?

It took me some time to adjust to the new environment, when I moved to SAF, but now I have made many friends, which has made training a lot more fun. Xiadong has been a great coach at the HP Squad.

Q4: Could you tell us about your most memorable sailing experience?

My most memorable sailing experience was participating in my first regatta, when I was 8 years old and still with the green fleet in Hong Kong.

Q5: Describe your worst sailing experience. When I was 9 years old, I was sailing in strong winds and when I jibed, the boom hit my head and knocked me out.

Q6: Are you into other sports besides sailing? If yes, what are they?

I used to play competitive rugby, as well as tennis and swimming, but I had to give them up to make time for sailing. I still manage to have time to play football twice a week during the week. I like to be able to play in a team sport as well.

Q7: How do you manage sailing around your curriculum of studies?

Most training and regattas are on weekends, but when there are regattas during school days, I ask my teachers if I can participate in the regatta and catch up with school work in the following days. So far they have been very supportive of me skipping school some times to race, as I have been able to keep up with good results at school.

Q8: For you, what makes a good sailor?

I think a good sailor is someone who never gives up and keeps on trying to improve.

Q9: What are your personal goals in terms of sailing? My near future goal is to finish top ten in a ranking regatta in Singapore.

Q10: Any regattas you are looking forward to participating in this year? How do you prepare yourself for the competition?

I’m looking forward to participating in the Ora Cup Ora regatta at Lake Garda in Italy this coming August. Since Lake Garda always has quite strong winds, I will be training my hiking and work on my overall fitness.

30 SAF YACHT CLUB BOSUN'S CALL
" If you don’t do well in a regatta, just forget and move on. As long as you learn something, it counts as a win."

PROMISING SAILOR

Hobbies: Sailing, Eating and Reading

Favourite Food: French Fries, Peanut Butter

Waffles

Sailing Honours:

• Silver Fleet Overall – 7th, Silver Fleet Novice category – 1st, Singapore Youth Sailing Championships 2023, 11th – 14th March 2023

• Silver Fleet Overall – 1st, Silver Fleet Female category – 1st, 19th SAFYC Regatta 2023, 29th – 30th April 2023

Sailing Championships 2023, 4th – 5th May 2023

• Silver Fleet Overall – 2nd, Silver Fleet Female category - 1st, Raffles Marina Optimist

Regatta 2023, 27th – 28th May 2023

Q1: How did your sailing journey come about? My mother used to sail the Laser when she was younger, and decided to sign me up for GKA at SAFYC. I enjoyed it so much that I decided I wanted to continue to sail after that.

Q2: What’s your favourite aspect of sailing?

I enjoy hiking out in stronger winds out at sea and the feeling of freedom while sailing fast!

Q3: What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club?

I like making friends in my squad and being able

to sail and learn with them at sea.

Q4: Could you tell us about your most memorable sailing experience?

During one of the sailing regattas, the winds were the strongest I had ever sailed in. After rounding the top mark, I capsized for the first time apart from during capsize drills. Thankfully, I could turn my boat over and continue sailing. Even though I did not finish the race, I still learnt a lot from that one race.

Q5: Describe your worst sailing experience. I think it would also be the same experience, when I capsized. I was terrified, of course. When I capsized, I almost forgot how to flip my boat over and was very scared.

But I calmed myself down and recalled the steps I had to do, and I succeeded.

Q6: Do you take part in other sports-related activities besides sailing?

No. I have sailing training three times a week, leaving no time for other sports activities. I prefer to focus just on sailing.

Q7: How do you juggle sailing and studying at the same time?

On the other days when there are no training sessions, I do as much work as I can. On training days, I do my homework in the morning before training or in the evening after training.

Q8: For you, what makes a good sailor? I think you have to be resilient, to keep trying and never give up, even if you can’t do it at first.

Q9: What are your personal goals in terms of sailing? I would just try my best, and I set a goal for every regatta. For example, I would tell myself to aim for at least the top five in the Silver Fleet.

Q10: Any regattas you are looking forward to participating in this year? How do you prepare yourself for the competition?

I am looking forward to this overseas regatta that I was just invited to, called the Fukuoka Friendship Regatta. I think there will be strong winds at that regatta and I have prepared myself by working hard during the training sessions with strong winds as much as I can.

SAF YACHT CLUB BOSUN'S CALL 31
" Sail your own race and forget about all the other sailors. Just focus on your goal!"

Q: What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?

A: I enjoy coaching students and helping them reach their fullest potential.

Q: What are some challenges that you have faced at work?

A: Sometimes, there will be lightning or thunderstorms, which may pose a danger to the sailors at sea.

Q: What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?

A: I love going for massages whenever I experience back pain or muscle aches.

Q: If you were to be given a superpower of your choice, what would it and why?

A: Have the ability to alleviate my back and muscle pain instantly.

Q: How do you define success?

A: Don’t give up when you fail. You have to keep trying until you succeed.

Q: Please share with us your biggest accomplishments so far.

A: Seeing my students clinch awards and championships at Regattas.

Q: 3 words to describe yourself.

A: Optimistic, Hardworking and Determined.
