270 Members, friends and family came together to welcome the Rabbit Year.
It was a fun-filled evening of good food, Lion dance, entertainment and most importantly, good company!
Special thanks to Assistant Hon. Sec, Mr. Edmund Toh for your guidance and support throughout the whole planning process.
Thank you to all members who joined us.
SAF Yacht Club is extremely honoured to be invited by Ms. Poh Li San, Grassroot Advisor to Sembawang West GROs, to be part of this meaningful event @ Bukit Canberra Sports Hall.
It was a very well-put-together event. We had a great time meeting with the Sembawang community and forging friendships.
Thank you for the opportunity and looking forward to more soon!
2023 BTR kicked off its first of the series on 7 January 2023 with 8 boats joining the race. There was a good breeze that day with 2 races held. The last race saw the last boat crossing the finishing line a little after 7.06 pm.
The second series of the race was originally intended for 4 March. However, due to foul weather, it was decided between the Club and the Sailors to postpone the race to 18 March.
There were 8 entrants for this series. However, Actext 1 had to drop out just before the warning signal due to a torn main, while Millennium 2 and Picannini sailed single-handed.
It was a tough race with winds blowing upwards of 20 knots at times.
Kudos to all sailors for attempting the race!
Come and join us on 6 May for the next series. See you there!

Q1: How did your sailing journey come about?
My brother started sailing a few years back. Everytime he went out to sea, I became increasingly curious about the sport. One night, I asked my parents if I could try sailing as a sport and they happily replied yes.
Q2: What’s your favourite aspect of sailing? I love feeling the wind. It makes me feel alive!
Q3: What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club?
I like the coaches and I’ve made great memories at SAF Yacht Club. Coach Low was instrumental to my success. He was patient, kind, and extremely supportive.
Q4: Could you tell us about your most memorable sailing experience?
My best sailing moment was being able to sail in Athens. It was really fun to sail with kids from various countries. The wind was strong and the water was absolutely beautiful. It inspired me to become a better sailor.
Q5: Describe your worst sailing experience.
My worst sailing experience happened when I was taking part in a regatta in Helsinki, Finland. I experienced equipment failure in two races in a row. As I was still young and inexperienced, I did not know what to do as it had never happened to me before. As a result, I had to retire in one race and came in last in the other. I cried on the water after that and wanted to retire for the day. However, it was through the encouragement of a fellow friend and sailor that I persevered on and tried even harder. Thankfully, I did better in the next race.
Q6: Do you take part in other sports-related activities besides sailing?
I am currently only involved in sailing as Nat B training takes up most of my time.
Q7: How do you juggle sailing and studying at the same time?
I have my meals in the car so that I can start on my homework when I get home. I maintain discipline by finishing my homework as soon as I can.
Q8: For you, what makes a good sailor?
A good sailor never gives up. A great sailor not only perseveres, but wins well, and loses well.
Q9: What are your personal goals in terms of sailing? To get into National Training Squad – Optimist ‘A’.
Q10: Any regattas you are looking forward to participating in this year? How do you prepare yourself for the competition?
I am looking forward to the 41st Lake Garda Meeting in Italy. I have been doing physical training and hiking drills every week to prepare for the stronger winds.
"Never give up keep going! You are stronger and smarter than you know. You’ll never lose, you either win or learn."
School: Nanyang Primary School
Hobbies: Sailing, Reading, Skiing
Favourite Food: Duck
Sailing Honours:
• 9th in RSYC Optimist Silver Fleet Knockout
Championship 2022
• 4th in Pesta Sukan Optimist Silver Fleet 2022 (1st 10 and under, 2nd Runner Up Novice)
• 1st in NSC Cup 2022 Silver Fleet (and 1st 10 and under)
• 1st in CSC Optimist Championship Silver Fleet (and 1st 10 and under)
Q1: How did your sailing journey come about?
My sailing journey came about when my parents brought me to Changi Sailing Club during the pandemic (in January 2021) to enrol in Opti Junior as they thought some fresh air would be good for me. My sister Cheryl also took up sailing at the same time, and we moved to SAFYC after Opti Junior. I think having my sister pick up the sport with me at the same time and be there with me throughout the learning journey really encouraged me to pursue sailing. Sailing is a lot of fun, especially as we get to hang out together with other sailors.
Q2: What’s your favourite aspect of sailing?
I love feeling the wind in my hair, the waves crashing against my boat, and the taste of sea spray on my tongue.
Q3: What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club?
It has been great training in both Sembawang, and now at NSRCC on East Coast. The structured progression that SAFYC provided me was very helpful. I also really treasure all the friends I’ve made since joining SAFYC and the SAFYC parents are super nice to all the sailing kids, always offering us words of encouragement and advice, and more importantly drinks and BBQ food.
Q4: Could you tell us about your most memorable sailing experience?
My first overseas trip to a clinic in Athens, Greece, organised by the first-ever Regatta of Champions was especially memorable. I had never experienced such strong winds which resulted in my boat capsizing in the first downwind of the clinic! The silver lining though - my GoPro was turned on and it captured the crystal clear waters when my boat went under. In hindsight, being able to capture the entire experience (with a full view of my boat underwater) was totally worth it!
Q5: Describe your worst sailing experience. My worst experience in sailing would probably be a race during my A2 training when we were out the entire day but there was zero wind and the current was super strong. Despite our best efforts, everyone had to be towed back to shore in the end.
Q6: Are you into other sports besides sailing? If yes, what are they?
Yes. They are skiing, wakeboarding, and wake surfing. I do this with my family and we all love it.
Q7: How do you manage sailing around your curriculum of studies?
I sail in the afternoon on the weekends and weekdays, and I make sure to study hard during the morning as well as at night, after training.
Q8: For you, what makes a good sailor? For me, a good sailor is one with determination, perseverance, focus, and love for the sport.
Q9: What are your personal goals in terms of sailing? My current goal is to train hard and improve as a sailor. Hopefully, I will get the chance to get into the National Team and train with the top sailors and coaches in the country!
Q10: Any regattas you are looking forward to participating in this year? How do you prepare yourself for the competition?
Yes – the next regatta will be the SAFYC Regatta. I will prepare myself by going for more training on the weekdays to get more water time. I will also try to absorb all the knowledge passed on during training sessions, especially on improving my starts, as in Gold Fleet the starts are more difficult.
"As long as you try, you will get there."
Q: What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?
A: I enjoyed having a sea view scenery and having good working colleagues. I also enjoy communicating and engaging with our Club Members.
Q: What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?
A: Photography and Skydiving.
Q: Tell us something about you that most people don't know
A: I am fluent in four languages: English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil.
Q: What is your personal mantra or favourite quote you want to share?
A: If the opportunity presents itself, just be confident and give yourself a chance to try! It doesn't matter whether you failed or succeeded - at least you tried.
Q: What is something you want to do/ explore that you've never done before?
A: I am curious to learn more about berthing and other kinds of boating techniques.
Q: If you were to be given a superpower of your choice, what would it and why?
A: I would love to have the ability to teleport so that I could travel anywhere instantly.
Q: How do you define success?
A: To achieve success, we must go through difficult moments and failures.
Q: Please share with us your biggest accomplishments so far.
A: Getting my Masters in Photography.
Q: 3 words to describe yourself.
A: Passionate, Responsible, Patient.
