Our annual flagship event, Carnival by the Straits was held on 1 June 2024, from 10am to 5pm with the theme “Straits Fiesta-Where Fun Meets the Waves”!
The Carnival was a lively and engaging day out for our Members as well as all participants, offering a wide range of activities. This year, participants were entitled to a free 10-minute massage and a free balloon.
Despite the morning downpour and Cat 1 Lighting alert, we were luckily able to resume our Sea Sports activities once the lighting alert was lifted at 10.15am.
Once the Cat 1 alert was lifted, our eager participants went straight for our Sea Sports rides! Besides our regular favourite RHIB Boat Rides, Banana Boat, Ski Tube, Jet Ski and Water Trampoline, this year, we added a new Experiential Keelboat Sailing.
Alongside the Sea Sports activities, a variety of Carnival Games were set up. Classic games like ring toss and archery offered fun challenges for participants of all ages.
The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) also took part in our Carnival with their game booth as well as giveaway!
We also had F&B booths where they served delicious food and refreshing drinks!
This CBTS, we were pleased to host a group of youths from Malay Youth Literary Association (4PM). They were able to experience the nautical community as well as enjoy themselves during the Carnival.
Besides 4PM, we were also happy to have MINDSG set up a booth and displayed their range of beautiful handicrafts!
Aside from games and rides, informational talks were held throughout the day, covering topics for Boaters and Sailors. A big thank you to Giam Hock Koon and Lim Shiau Yean who conducted “Cruising in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean – From Idle Dream to Reality” and SC Yong, Russell who conducted “Brief Introduction to Coastal Navigation with Paper Charts”, and Teo Wee Tee who conducted Racing Rules of Sailing. At the end of the talks, a token of appreciation were presented to our speakers!
A Lucky Draw was conducted for our participants to end on a high note. Excitement built up as attendees anticipated the chance to win fantastic prizes! Congratulations to our lucky winners!
The top prizes were:
1. 2D1N Private Room Stay + 2 Fishing Vouchers + 2 Eighty Nine Bistro Vouchers (Worth $408.00)
2. 2D1N Private Room Stay + 1 Kin Kao Mai Voucher + 2 Eighty Nine Bistro Vouchers (Worth $388.00)

On 20 April, the Club organised a Treat Day for our Members, offering delightful muffins as a token of appreciation.
Despite the rainy weather, we were determined to spread some joy, so we extended the Treat Day until the following day, ensuring that more Members had the chance to savour the delicious snack.
It was heartening to see the smiles on our Members’ faces as they indulged in the tasty treats.
We hope you like the snacks we shared! What would you like for the next Members’ Treat Day?

Q: How did your sailing journey come about?
I was introduced to sailing at a young age as my older brothers and cousins were sailors. I was naturally drawn to the sport as I grew up watching them sail.
Q: What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club?
I learned how to sail at SAFYC, Sembawang through the GKA programme so it brings back fond memories. This is where I learned my basics to be a better sailor with SAFYC coaches.
Q: What are the top 3 things you enjoy most about sailing?
The friends that I make while sailing and this made it way more fun! I also have the opportunity to meet sailors from all over the world at overseas regattas and I love the bond with them.
Sailing is very competitive, and it makes the whole experience very exhilarating and fun!
2. Sailing is not limited to one boat class and it gives me the opportunity to try different classes of boats as I grow, which I thought will be very interesting! 3.
Q: What are your biggest takeaways from the 2023 Optimist Asian & Oceanian Championship?
My biggest takeaway was that I have to always try my best and never stop fighting until it's over –I won the championship only at the very last race – NEVER GIVE UP!
Q: What was your preparation like for the SEA Games? Who were your biggest supporters?
To prepare for the SEA Games, I trained very hard and attended many regattas in which my competitors were participating, in order to benchmark my performance against them.
My biggest supporters were my parents. Their support allowed me to participate in overseas regattas where I gained good experience.
Q: How did it feel to represent Singapore and what was your experience with your fellow competitors throughout the SEA Games?
It was an honour to represent Singapore and it brought me pride to be representing my country. Throughout the event, even though it was quite stressful, I still had a good time having fun with my friends from the other SEA countries!
Q: What do you like to do when you’re not sailing?
I like to play frisbee and football with my friends when I am not sailing.
Q: How do you see your sailing career evolving over the next few years?
I would like to try the different classes of boats!
Q: What are some common mistakes sailors make during races, and how do you avoid them?
I find that some common mistakes sailors make are becoming stressed during the races. This causes them to lose focus and become distracted. I avoid this by staying calm and managing my emotions throughout the regatta. This allows me to stay focused on the races.
Our 20th SAFYC Regatta was held during 2 weekends.
A total of 171 Gold and Silver fleet sailors participated in our 20th SAFYC Regatta. All the sailors were put to the test with varying wind directions over both days of racing.
After a hard fought weekend, a big congratulations to Ethan Chia and Joel Khoo, the winners of Gold fleet and Silver Fleet respectively.
2nd Joel Tan Kai En
3rd Shin Lin
4th Cory Loh Zhi Hang
5th Adriel Cheung Hei Yat
2nd Sean Kum Kok Wei
3rd Nathaniel Cheung Lap Yan
4th Ashlea Tham
5th Lucas Cao Zhihong
The following week, we continued the regatta with the ILCA class. With a total of 88 boats across 3 different ILCA classes, this was one of the largest ILCA fleet SAFYC has ever organised so far!
The wind was light with many shifts throughout the 2 days, which made the condition extremely tricky for the sailors.
After another hard fought weekend in the ILCA class, we would like to congratulate the following winners:
The Club would like to thank all participants for their participation, and we look forward to hosting another successful SAFYC Regatta next year!
Despite the gloomy weather during the third series of the BTR, there was a constant breeze of approximately 7 knots, which was sufficient for the sailors to combat the strong outgoing tide. A total of 5 boats participated in this series.
Race 2 was set on Course 7, where both Premier Cru 1 and Silhouette successfully flew their kites.
However, before they had to tack for the second leg, the wind dropped to approximately 4 knots. The race was subsequently shortened at Pin End.
Nevertheless, the sailors had fun and enjoyed their refreshments at the end of the day, savoring the calm after a day on the water.
See you at the next BTR on 6 July!
