BY ORDER OF THE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE LTC Allan Ng Honorary SecretarySailing is great fun and rewarding to learn - where adventure meets courage and discovery. It is a wonderful leisure activity where one can go out to sea and experience something new.
On 18th June 2022, 51 participants enjoyed the leisurely morning cruise organized by South View Primary School Parent Support Group (PSG), a group of parents who strongly support the school and collaborate on many activities, events and programmes for the benefit of the children, parents as well as the teachers.
Before setting sail, a safety briefing was conducted by Iggy - an important routine to have prop er guidance to promote a safe environment. With good weather and a gentle breeze, under the careful steermanship of 8 boat skippers both adults and children had a great time together. Upon disembarking, everyone was treated to a bento lunch to complete their wonderful day out.
Big Thank You to the following Skippers who voluntereed their boat and time to support the experi entail sailing.

How long have you been working for SAFYC?
Since 2018 I have been a part of the Club and for 5 years I have learned a lot of things that I never knew before.
What is your role in the Marina department of the Club?
Being a senior marina assistant I was hands-on on checking all the boats and carrying out routine cleaning, repairs and maintenance. I ensure that the boats in marina are properly
tendered at all times.
What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?
I enjoyed when the members require us to bring down the boat from the dry berth. I also cherish every moment it’s like everyday there is something different will do.
Do you have a bucket list? Can you mention a few items you have done from your list?
Yes. I managed to pilot boats. Working on the marina side gave me a chance to understand and became familiar with the boats. On the other hand, working in the sea environment, there are still some things that I want to dosomething that is related on the marine activities.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working? What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?
I love chilling out at the beach with my friends. We usually go to East Coast Park, cycle, relax and enjoy the scenery.
Do you have personal mantra or a favorite quote you want to share?
Patience is a virtue, there is no task that we can’t overcome. We should always be happy and love what we are doing.
What’s something you want to do/explore this year that you’ve never done before?
Go to the World Cup and watch soccer games. Also I want to discover and explore more places around the world.
If you were to be given a super power of your choice, what whould it be and why?
I want to have the strength that can lift anything, it’s something like lifting beyond one’s limits to get stronger, to achieve new goals and to be satisfied.
How would you describe yourself for people who do not know a thing about you
Soft spoken. Happy go lucky. And patient at all times.
The 4th instalment of the BTR was held on 9th July with a fairly steady breeze.
Race 1 of the day was sailed on course 2 with the sailors crossing the finishing line shortly after the start.
Race 2 commenced with course 6 – a sausage course that requires the sailors to sail from the start line to port round Denman Buoy, port rounding the pin end mark and back to port round Denman Buoy before crossing the finishing line.
On 10th September, the 5th se ries encountered a light winds and a strong easterly currents.
First warning signal was given at 1400hrs with numeral pen nant 2 up. This instructed the sailors to race from the start line between SAF Yacht Club’s flag post at the marina to the pin end perpendicular away (port rounding on Simpang Buoy and port rounding on Beaulieu Buoy) before crossing the finish ing line between the SAF Yacht Club’s flag post and the finish ing mark.
Two boats, Piccanini and Zeph yr were unable to exonerate themselves due to a lull but have been able to scored On Course Side (OCS) for this race.
After a hard-fought race from series 1 through series 5 where the fleet finished extremely close, Scarlett O’ Hara man aged to come out on top with a win, followed by Baby Beluga in 2nd and Innis Free in 3rd.
Scarlet O'Hara 1st Baby Beluga 2nd Innis Free 3rd
With the win for Scarlett O'Hara, this brings them level on points with Piccanini on the overall standings with Innis Free trailing just 1 point behind them.
They will be battling it out on the 12th of November in our fi nal series of BTR for 2022.
We look forward to seeing all the sailors there!
Because of that race, I continued to be focused as I wanted to do well in the next few races and that got me my first and most memorable medal.
At the start of my sailing journey, I went through GKA and learnt how to sail. During that time, I capsized 7 times in a row throughout 7 different trainings and the worst thing was I didn’t even know what my mistake was. However, I wouldn’t exactly say that it was a bad experience, but it certainly wasn’t fun either. And after capsizing so many times, I learned how to control the boat and I hardly ever capsize now.
School: Endeavour Primary School
Hobbies: Sailing, Cooking, Sleeping
Favourite Food: Soba, Waffles, Fish ball, Noodles
Words For a Fellow Sailor: “An amazing sailor makes his or her own decisions and doesn’t let anyone else change it.”
Sailing Honours: 2022
• 2nd place - Pesta Sukan
• 6th place - RSYC Knockout Championships
• 8th place - Raffles Marina
How did your sailing journey come about?
It first came when I joined sailing as my CCA in school. Actually, sailing wasn’t my first choice. Af ter seeing my seniors having fun out at sea, it piqued my interest in the sport. None of my family members had ever sailed be fore, so I feel really lucky that sail ing is my CCA and I am able to experience the ups and downs throughout the journey.
What’s your favourite aspect of
I consider myself as a competi tive person. I often compete with my siblings when we play. I love competing in regattas and im proving step-by-step. I also enjoy sailing with my friends and having fun out at sea. Whenever I face difficulties and overcome them, I see the improvement in myself and that makes me more confi dent.
What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club?
As a new sailor, I was unfamiliar with the ways to control and handle my boat especially during strong winds, but with the support and guidance from my coaches from Coach Iggy, Uncle Mazelan, Coach Murphy, Coach Edward and now Coach Mike, I feel I have become a more confident sailor.
Could you share your most memorable sailing experience?
My most memorable sailing experience was during one of the races at the Raffles Marina Regatta where I got into second place. When that happened, I was so excited! I couldn’t believed that I had beaten some of the best sailors in the fleet!
Are you into other sports besides sailing? If yes, what are they? Yes. I like playing volleyball and going swimming with my brothers. These sports allow me to relax and let go of all my stress, just like sailing!
What are your personal goals in terms of sailing?
Originally, I had hoped to get into Gold Fleet in June 2022 but after not taking part in the National Sailing Championships at NSC during the June holidays as I was sick, I narrowly missed my chance to get promoted. But now, I am setting my sights on getting into Gold Fleet.
Any regattas you are looking forward to participating this year? How do you prepare yourself for the competition?
I am looking forward to the regattas at the end of the year. Usually, 1 week before the competition, I would read the NORSI to get information on the regatta and familiarise myself with the course. I also make sure I check my sail and boat so that it is in tip-top condition for the races.

How did your sailing journey come about?
My mother sailed when she was in school and asked me whether I wanted to try it. I tried it and liked it!
What’s your favourite aspect of sailing?
I enjoy being out in the water, the wind, the sun, the movement of the boat, and making decisions on my own.
What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club?
I have enjoyed learning from the coaches, and having fun with my friends in SAF Yacht Club.
Could you share your most memorable sailing experience?
Earning my first medal at the RSYC Optimist Knockout Championship 2022.
What about your worst experience in sailing?
During my first full day of racing in Singapore National Sailing Championships 2022 in June, I felt awful and couldn’t think during
the fourth and last race of the day. My mother told me it was probably because I was too hungry as I had forgotten to eat my snack in the boat. I learned my lesson and always drink and eat between races after that.
Are you into other sports besides sailing? If yes, what are they? I used to play football and tennis, but now I’m focused on sailing.
What are your personal goals in terms of sailing?
I want to continue to enjoy sailing and improve as a sailor.
Any regattas you are looking forward to participating this year? How do you prepare yourself for the competition?
I’m looking forward to the NSC Cup in November. I have been sailing a lot and working on my fitness.

The Royal Brunei Yacht Club was established back in 1952 with a main purpose to revive and enhance Brunei’s proud seafaring history.
Our club rules specifically state that an objective of the club shall be “The encouragement of yachting and yacht racing in Brunei Darussalam” and we interpret the word ‘yacht’ to mean any privately owned vessel used principally for recre ational purposes and powered by engine or sail.
We do, however, welcome members who are not interested in yachting, don’t own a yacht, nor have any intention of ever buying one! Everyone is welcome to our club.
We have a wonderful range of facilities hosted across two different venues and we arrange all sorts of events through out the year, to make your membership a valued part of your life and something to be proud of.
