HEALTH TIPS:
Easy Ways to Take Charge of Your Health
When to Call the Dermatologist If you notice any of these changes, you should make an appointment for a checkup: A new spot on skin that is raised, is more than one color, or has an irregular shape. Any old spots or moles that appear to be changing. Sudden, extensive hair growth on your face or chest. Patchy hair loss on your scalp.
You need to learn how to take charge of your health every day to live well with type 2 diabetes. The good news is, there are many safe ways to care for your condition at home.
Simple Ways to Boost Your Energy: Ready to Get Energized ? If a demanding career and or busy family life has you feeling worn out, it's time to take action. A life filled with vitality, energy, and enthusiasm is within your reach, and I'm here to help you grab it. Get ready to go from feeling frazzled to fabulous: Read on for 12 tips that will help you get there!
Here are some strategies to try. Do Home Blood Sugar Tests Knowledge is power when it comes to your blood sugar. If you find your levels aren't where they should be, you can take steps to get them back on track. So be sure to check regularly. Some basic tips:
Breathe Deeply Whenever you're feeling sluggish, the first thing to do is stop and take a few long, deep breaths. Close your eyes and breathe slowly in through your nose, out through your mouth and repeat this until your heart rate slows. Meditative breathing like this increases the amount of oxygen in your bloodstream, which can help lower your blood pressure and heart rate and can relax tense muscles. With each breath, you'll deliver energy-giving oxygen to every cell in your body. Get up and Moving Instead of sipping coffee every time you feel the need to reboot, try taking 60- to 90-second mini breaks throughout the day to get your blood flowing. Once an hour, simply stand up and stretch your arms over your head, take a deep breath, swing your arms from side to side, or walk up and down a flight or two of stairs. The science is basic: Moving stimulates circulation, which allows more oxygen to be transported to your muscles and brain. And more oxygen means more energy! You'll be amazed at how big of a difference these 60-second breaks can make. Eat an Energizing Snack If you find your energy dipping midmorning or mid afternoon, it's likely that your blood sugar levels are low. Having a snack will help but not just any food will do! The most energizing snacks offer a mixture of healthy carbs and protein, a hearty combo that will rev your metabolism and power you through to your next meal. Shoot for the 100- to 200-calorie range, and keep a few of these snacks on hand to ensure you never get caught with a grumbling tummy. Some of my favorite options: sliced veggies with hummus, air-popped popcorn and string cheese, or a piece of your favorite fruit with a handful of nuts.
They help you to manage your disease just like you manage other parts of your life, like work, household chores, and the family budget. And they can help you feel in control of your health.
• Pick your spot for testing. Most meters need you to prick your fingertip to test your blood. But some newer machines can get a sample from other places on your body, like your upper arm or thigh. • Ask your doctor when you should check your blood sugar like before meals, after a workout, at bedtime, or when you think they're low. • Make a plan with your doctor for what you need to do when your levels are too high or too low. Also, ask when you should call him if they're too far off-target. • Keep a record of your readings. You can write them down in a notebook, track them in an app, or rely on the memory feature of your glucose monitor. They'll help you see trends and spot any problems. And they'll help your doctor, too, so bring them with you to your next appointment. Watch Your Weight Carrying some extra pounds? If you're overweight, no matter how heavy you are, you can slash your blood sugar if you slim down. Even losing 10 or 15 pounds has health perks. Weight loss can: • Lower blood sugar • Reduce blood pressure • Improve cholesterol levels • Lighten the stress on your hips, knees, ankles, and feet • Give you more energy and let you breathe easier Check with your doctor before you start a weight loss plan. Then, talk with a diabetes educator or nutritionist to figure out some healthy changes that you can stick with for a lifetime. A better diet and exercise routine can be a big help. But if those habits haven't worked for you, ask your doctor if weight loss medications or surgery might be a good option.
