BuildingNewApproachestoSecurity

Nowthatwehaveaclearideaofourcurrentsituationandsomeofthenewcapacitieswe need to build, we have already begun the process of building a new security strategy Having a strategy is different to having an ad-hoc or improvised approach to security. Many of our initial and instinctive reactions to threats, such as those we have identified already,maybeeffectiveatkeepingussafe-however,someofthemmaynotbe,andmay evenbeharmful. Therefore, aswebegintobuildnewtactics, weshouldensurethatthey relate to an overall strategy for maintaining our 'space' which in turn enables us to continue our work in the defence of human rights. Below, we will explore three archetypal strategies for maintaining our work space which we can draw on when designingournewapproachtosecurity.

SecurityStrategies:Maintainingaspaceforourwork.Whenweconsiderdevelopingone or moresecuritystrategiesor plans, it'suseful to rememberthat our strategiesought to correspond to the political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental context in which we operate. There is no one-size-fits-all strategy. In this respect, it can be useful to think of this in terms of the amount of space we enjoy for carrying out our work. The actors opposed to our work have the objective of shrinking that space, perhaps to the point where we can't carry out our work at all-hence the threats they impose upon us. The point of a security strategy is to help us identify tactics and make plans in order to maintain or expand the space in society for our work, and this often involves engagement with the actors who oppose us, such as through advocacy or awareness-raising.

Thanks for being such a wonderful Advertiser’s and Reader's entire year. May Prosperity and Blessings come your way this New Year.

Hikvision Introduces the Evolutionary eDVR Series with eSSD Technology

Hikvision recently added the eDVR Series into its expanding portfolio of security solutions for SMBs. Powered by embedded solid state drive (eSSD) technology, Hikvision's eDVRs are compact, durable, easy-to-use, and energy-efficient. All this means they are ideal for small-to-medium-sized businesses and residential applications.

"The eDVR Series is smarter, faster, more durable and more energy efficient than anything that's gone before, not only helping to minimize negative environmental impacts, but also delivering major energy and cost savings for our customers" says Wenson Zhou, Product Director at Hikvision.

New possibilities for efficiency and sustainability

 Eco-friendliness and 45% energy saving

The ultra-low power consumption of chip-level eSSDs makes Hikvision eDVRs more sustainable. Since these

devices don't have spindle motor engines built in, their energy consumption is 45% lower than that of the conventional DVRs, not only helping users to make long-term savings on their electricity bills, but also enabling them to reduce carbon emissions.

In addition, the use of eSSDs makes the products more durable than conventional DVRs that use HDD drives. This is because there are fewer moving parts, such as actuator arms. With longer product life cycles, the eDVR Series contributes to eco-efficiency and sustainability.

 Endurable storage with a 25% improvement in efficiency

Being powered by "eSSD" technology, with solidstate storage components down to chip level, the Hikvision eDVRs have exceptional storage efficiency and system stability. The storage efficiency of eDVR Series is further enhanced by "scene adaptive bitrate control technology", which automatically optimizes

December 2022 - www.visionmediahitech.com 12

encoding for video footage, and improves the coding efficiency by 25%. Specifically, complex scenes with human or vehicle movements are allocated higher bitrates to ensure great video quality. At the same time, low-complexity scenes with little or no movement are assigned a lower bitrate to optimize storage efficiency.

 Compact design for ease of use and simplicity of installation

As the eDVRs are embedded with SSDs and have a "screwless" design, tool-free installation is made possible. Besides, without the traditional horizontal mounting requirements of conventional HDDs, the devices are also easier to assemble and set up. Thanks to this ease and flexibility of installation, both endcustomers and installers can save time and reduce their maintenance and operating costs.

Compared to conventional SSD DVRs, Hikvision's eDVRs are highly compact, helping to save on space. They can fit anywhere, be it behind a monitor, under a table, on a bookshelf, or hidden inside a custom stand.

Smart motion detection

Embedded with Motion Detection 2.0 technology, the eDVR Series can distinguish human beings and vehicles from other objects in any given environment, enabling property owners to respond much more quickly and effectively to potential security breaches.

The technology also enable property owners to search video footage based on the appearances of people or vehicles during a specific period of time, saving time and reducing their workloads and costs.

Effective for residential and SMB applications

The innovative features of the Hikvision eDVR Series make these solutions equally effective for residential, SMB, and commercial applications In all cases, endcustomers benefit from an easy and flexible installation process, low energy consumption, minimal maintenance requirements, and high performance videocapture, storage, andprocessing

The compact format of Hikvision eDVRs also increases the solution's versatility For example, eDVRs can easily fit into residential homes. The devices' storage drives also operate with virtually no noise or vibrations, and generate very little heat, which makes them ideal for residential applications. These advantages, along with the eDVRs' affordability, functionality, and sustainability, also make the product range an ideal choice for SMBs such as convenience stores, grocery shops, restaurants, workshops, bars, and more.

Functional Testing of Smoke, Heat & CO Detectors

Functional testing of detectors has long been required by both detector manufacturers and international codes and standards. Leading fire codes and standards such as BS: 5839 and NFPA 72, clearly describe the frequency at which testing must be carried out and the type of tools that should be used.

This methodology should be applied in accord with IS2189 and relevant International, National and State standards, as well as the National Building Code.

1. Functional Testing of Smoke Detectors

1.1 Every detector must be functionally tested within a 1 year period.

1.2 Every detector must be tested using equipment and products approved by the detector manufacturer to ensure compatibility with the detector and in accord with the manufacturermaintenancerecommendations/instructions.

1.3 The equipment and products used in the testing must not involve the use of naked flames, flammable oils or toxic substances, to avoid additional fire risk and compromise of the fire detection system.

1.4 The testing equipment used should include lightweight, non-conductive, extendable access poles, which allow the testing to be carried out from a safe position, without the need for additional access equipment, such as ladders, platforms, scaffolding, etc.

1.5 Every smoke detector must be functionally tested by a method which confirms that smoke can enter the detector chamber from an external source and produce a fire alarm signal (e.g. by use of apparatus which generates simulated smoke or suitable aerosols around the detector). It must be ensured that the material used does not caused damage to, or affect the subsequent performance of, the detector

1.6 Products containing substances of an adhesive nature, such as silicones must not be used.

2. Functional Testing of Heat Detectors

2.1 Every detector must be functionally tested within a 1 year period.

Workplace Oxygen Level Monitoring is Important in Pharmaceutical Industry

Monitoring Oxygen levels within the workplace is important because oxygen can be dangerous if too much or too little is present. Oxygen has approximately the same density as air, 1,354 kg/m3. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) defines the minimum safe concentration of oxygen as 19.5%, and the maximum safe level as 23.5%.

Impairment of judgment starts to be evident.

First signs of anoxia appear.

Breathing and pulse rate increases, muscular co-ordination is slightly impaired.

Consciousness continuous; emotional upsets, abnormal fatigue upon exertion, disturbed respiration.

Nausea and vomiting, inability to move freely and loss of consciousness may occur.

Convulsive movements and gasping respiration occur; respiration stops and a few minutes later heart action ceases.

Pharmaceutical industries use nitrogen gas in their manufacturing process Nitrogen is considered harmless because it is nontoxic and largely inert. However, it can displace oxygen in the air, reducing the percentage of oxygen to below safe levels.

In simple terms, Nitrogen leakage is equal to Oxygen depletion, and that can be dangerous as per the above table.

The key to deal with this problem is to install Gas Detectors and Gas Monitor which can be

configured with the exhaust fans, valves, or Hooter cum Flasher; so that whenever the gas concentration goes beyond the safe limit, the critical area not only gets ventilated but the control valves are also shut ensuring there is no more leakage and it can also alert the security guard by remote hooters.

ARTICLE December 2022 - www.visionmediahitech.com 22

1. Type of Sensor Used:  Electrochemical Sensor for O : It uses an 2 electrochemical reaction to generate a current proportional to the gas concentration. The instrument then displays the gas concentration in parts per million (% V/V). The sensor is capable of detecting the gas concentration in the 0 – 25% V/V range having with a resolution of 0.1 for O2 gas.

2. Location of the Detector: The selection of mounting location of the detection system is very important. The gas detector should be installed near the source of the leakage and at height of 4-6 feet above floor level.

We recommend installing O monitoring system 2 inside each working area with an inbuilt Hooter-cumFlasher so that people working in that area can evacuate the room once the alarm goes off. Ambetronics integrates all the gas detectors to a multi-channel Gas monitor which is installed in the security officer's cabin.

We also suggest to install one alarm in corridor, & finally an alarm in the security officer's cabin.

The guard not only can check the readings given by individual detector but is also alerted by the Hooter

cum Flasher that goes off whenever the gas concentration reaches the alarm set points.

3. Alarm Activation: To ensure the safety of the personal in the critical area, it's recommended to set the Alarm levels as below:  Alarm 1: 19.25% V/V  Alarm 2: 18.5% V/V

Understanding Safety Footwear Ratings

What are the differences among EH, SD, CD and DI ratings on footwear?

Understanding the differences of electrical hazard, static dissipative, conductive and dielectric footwear can be confusing - even for safety professionals. A review of the standards governing electrical risks and the labeling requirements can prove beneficial for employers, users and professional safety managers. Let's look at each of the different electrical risks in more detail.

 Electrical Hazard Safety Footwear

EH footwear is nonconductive to significantly reduce the flow of electricity through the shoe and to ground, reducing the possibility of electrocution. "EH" will be clearly visible on the ASTM label, and only footwear with a safety toe can receive this designation. EH-rated footwear is intended as a secondary source of protection against incidentally stepping on live electrical wires. This protection is severely deteriorated with excessive wear on the outsoles and/or when worn in wet environments.

 Static Dissipative Safety Footwear

SD footwear (sometimes referred to as ESD - for electrostatic dissipative) is designed to reduce static electricity buildup by conducting the charge from body to ground while maintaining a sufficiently high level of resistance. Such footwear will have "SD-100," "SD35" or "SD-10" clearly visible on the ASTM label and must meet the ASTM requirements for toe impact and compression resistance.

If SD footwear is required, it's important to note that buying properly labeled SD footwear is only half the battle. To consistently and effectively accomplish static dissipation, several factors must be controlled. First, the wearer cannot add to or replace the specially designed SD insole supplied with the footwear. The use of powders intended to eliminate foot sweat should not be

used with SD boots. Even certain socks cannot be worn with this footwear, as they can impede the flow of electrical charges to ground.

 Conductive Footwear

CD footwear is designed to "conduct" static electricity through the shoes and into the neutral ground. The intention is to protect the wearer - and all persons in the vicinity - against ignition hazards such as those found at a munitions or fireworks manufacturing facility. CD footwear is not intended to be worn by personnel working near open electrical circuits. Such footwear will have "CD" clearly visible on the label and must meet the requirements for toe impact and compression resistance.

 Dielectric Footwear

DI footwear can be worn over a sock or shoe and is designed to provide significant isolation or insulation in step-potential environments during incidental contact with energized electrical conductors, apparatus or circuits. Examples include working on energized power lines or, particularly, in the area of live downed power lines, as current can jump large distances Additional uses include digging in areas with underground power lines that can be damaged by a worker using a shovel, drill or other mechanized equipment.

Selecting footwear for a specific electrical risk is a process that needs a careful assessment of the work environment. Additionally, periodically inspect the footwear's outsoles for excessive wear; in some cases, ensure worker compliance with choice of insoles and socks; and instruct workers not to use foot powders. Many footwear choices are available, and a well-informed end user working with a professional safety manager can ensure that everyone is compliant and safe.

Construction Industry Confronting Job Hazards with Smart Technology and Cutting-Edge PPE

Construction work remains one of the most dangerous occupations. Potential hazards abound, from falling objects to dangers involving footing, balance, and the inability to adequately see and hear Most job sites are replete with electrical tools and heavy machinery, which greatly increases the potential for on-the-job accidents, especially when proper precautions are not adhered to.

The most typical types of dangers associated with job site construction include, airborne material exposure, slipping or trippingonconcretesurfaces, struckbyincidents(including a vehicle, a falling object, a projectile or any facsimile thereof),scaffoldandladder relatedinjuries andburns

Thankfully, the private sector is hard at work addressing these various dangers in new and exciting ways, most of which incorporate smart technology, with advanced engineering and tried and true solutions from the past. Smart devices can respond to both the body of the worker and the environment to deliver crucial information to both the worker and, often, the supervisor

 Next-Generation Hard Hats

These hard hats are the epitome of wearable mobile technology. These multi-faceted protection devices are made by companies like SmartCap and are designed to monitor the fatigue level of workers by monitoring EEG (brainwaves). They are also designed to implement early warning alerts and alarms which enables a worker to monitor his, or her, alertness levels.

 Smart Safety Vest

Commonly seen at any job or construction site, a traditional safety vest does little more than raise the visible profile of the wearer. Smart vests and similar garments utilize a wide range of features which could play a key role in creating and maintaining a safer work environment. From garments that make use of LEDs and sensors to further increase visibility in low-lightenvironmentstovestsdesignedtodetectthewearer's vital signs in order to alert them of any abnormalities, smart vests are something that industry professionals can expect tosee awhole lotmore ofin the days ahead.

 Safety Glasses

Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that uses glasses, goggles or similar devices in order to provide users with an added layer of visual information. Next-generation safety glasses can provide construction workers with

insight regarding unsafe temperatures, the status of on-site equipment or highlight other aspects of the worksite that may pose a potential safety hazard. AR can also be of benefit in terms of visualizing various aspects of construction projects or ensuring that workers are less likely to suffer from distractions when performing a task.

 On-Site Sensors

Remote sensors provide information regarding unsafe noise levels. They help monitor temperature and other environmental changes and alert workers of the presence of volatile compounds and other hazardous materials. Ensuring proper placement and antenna alignment for all broadcast equipment and devices can even decrease response time in the event of an accident or lifethreatening emergency Some of these sensors and systems will even summon help automatically and can be a crucial resource in the event that an accident victim becomes incapacitated or unable to call for help

 Maintaining a Safer Work Environment

While access to the right tools, equipment, and other resources goes a long way toward minimizing the risk of an accident, creating and utilizing the right safety policies and protocols will prove to be of tremendous importance. Construction companies are well served to take stock of their operation and to identify areas where safety is a concern.

PPE is, of course, an essential part of workplace safety, and new equipment will ensure that employees feel safe on the job. Every construction worker should be able to come to work with confidence that he or she won't get injured while working. Equipment manufacturers are making sure this happens with each new development Innovative PPE provides employees with more options about what kind of gear they wear and what it can do for them Providing more choices can reduce worker injuries and increase employee satisfaction. However, as any job safety manager will attest to, PPE is a tool like any other, and must be utilized in tandem with good work practices and quality control thatmustnever be substitutedfor.

How effective is UV-C for Industrial Hygiene?

Workplace hygiene has always been part of maintaining a commercial facility regardless of the industry. However, the COVID-19 pandemic brought the need for advanced disinfection techniques into sharp relief.

UV-C disinfection is a popular choice for hospitals and other medical facilities, but how effective is it for industrial hygiene?

Variations of UV Radiation

UV or ultraviolet radiation exists on a wavelength visible to the unaided eye. Scientists break this radiation into three primary types UV-A, UV-B and UV-C. The sun emits all three wavelengths of UV radiation, though UV-A and UVB are the only ones that reach the surface The atmosphere and ozone layer typically absorb UV-C.

UV-A and UV-B exposure are necessary to help the human body produce vitamin D, but excessive exposure can lead to sunburn and premature aging in the short term. It can also increase an individual's risk of developing skin cancers such as melanoma.

While UV-C might not make it through the atmosphere, it is possible to replicate this ultraviolet wavelength and use it here on Earth.

How Effective is UV-C?

Researchers classify UV-C radiation as germicidal. They may also refer to it as ultraviolet germicidal irradiation or UVGI.Exposuretothiswavelengthoflightworkstodeactivate the DNA in any microorganisms it encounters, including but not limited to bacteria, viruses and mold spores.

UV disinfection is a popular choice for destroying microorganisms in drinking water, making wastewater treatment safer, improving food safety and even promoting plant growth. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many building owners explored the potential for UV-C lamps in HVAC systems tokill airborne pathogens like COVID-19

Research shows these lamps have the potential to inactivate or kill up to 98% of airborne pathogens within just five minutes of exposure While COVID itself was not airborne, it couldtravel through HVAC systems on respiratory particles

Risks of UV-C Exposure

HVAC units and ductwork also employ UV-C disinfection techniques inside their systems. Building designers can also install it in upper air systems where people won't be exposed to UV-C light.

This wavelength of light can degrade some materials over time. While exposure risks drop off around one foot from the light source, long-term exposure can cause various damages to human tissues. Research found direct exposure to UV-C light can cause corneal eye injuries andsevere acute skin damage.

To minimize exposure, working in areas utilizing UV-C light for disinfection requires personal protective equipment (PPE), including UV goggles or face shields and attire covering all exposed skin. If decision-makers hope to implement UV-C in their facilities, they will have to require the proper PPE and safety training to reduce the risk of damage.

Using UV-C for Industrial Hygiene

Industrial hygiene focuses on identifying and eliminating or controlling workplace stressors and risks potentially impacting the well-being of workers. UV-C can be a valuable tool for companies with teams working in close proximity It can work in building HVAC systems and could also double as a tool for disinfectingcommon surfaces such as tabletops ordoorknobs

This disinfection technique became vital throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and could help to prevent the spread of other viruses beginning to spread globally, such as monkeypox.

Monkeypox can spread through direct contact with an infected individual or contact with surfaces the individual has touched. CDC guidance states orthopoxviruses such as monkeypox are very sensitive to UV light, so UV-C disinfection could help prevent the virus from spreading within the workplace.

Experts also warn climate change could spark a new type of pandemic fueled by an infectious fungus Current infrastructure is unprepared to handle this kind of pandemic, but UV-C light could help destroy the fungal spores in interior spaces, preventing the spread.

UV-C can also help improve interior air quality by destroying bacteria and viruses and nullifying mold, mildew spores and other organic airborne contaminants. It has no impact on inorganic contaminants, such as carbon monoxide and other common pollutants, but it can remove many organic problems from a building's HVAC system.

Looking Forward

The larger the team and the closer together they work, the more likely an infection will be able to spread quickly between them. Introducing tools like UV-C can help improve industrial hygiene and keep employees safe and healthy in the long run.

Safety Focus for Industrial Facilities During The Holidays

Target these Areas to Reduce Risk During the Busiest Time of the Year

There is no crunch time quite like the holiday peak season. This is when lots of folks do most of their shopping and it's a hectic time for many industries.

Workplaces involving heavy objects and moving vehicles get riskier as colder weather sets in, but they do not have to become dangerous. Here are a few focus areas to target so you can send your people home safely every day.

1. Properly Prepare Temporary Workers

One of the most critical things construction site and manufacturing plant managers can do during the holiday season is ensure temporary workers are as prepared as possible. That means providing the same thoroughness of training any new hire would expect and working to

cultivate the same level of buy-in as longer-term employees.

There are a few ways to ensure adequate training and emotional investment for temporary workers:

• Try the Buddy System: Temporary workers with a partner can ask more questions and have someone they can check in with.

• Use Positive Reinforcement: Communicate about what is going well when you see conscientious employees working safely.

• Invest in New Methods: Virtual Reality (VR) delivers interesting training opportunities across engineering, construction and manufacturing disciplines. Investing in next-generation tech could make the onboarding process safer by preparing them for work using highly realistic VR environments emphasizingproper techniques.

2. Observe and Document the Facility's Unique Safety Risks

Although sectors associated with heavy engineering and construction - or simply moving heavy objects - tend to share certain risks, every environment is unique. Probably the most crucial thing decision-makers can do is fully observe, document, understand and communicate about your facility's specific safety risks.

When the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspects manufacturing and construction businesses If there is one essential safety tip to take with you, it is to compare your facility's unique risk profile against OSHA's enforceable priority areas They include the following:

• An always up-to-date report of all chemicals used on the premises

• Training records for all electrical safety practices

• Training records for using personal protective equipment

• Training protocols for employees concerning hazard communication

• Plansandrecordsforannualrespiratortraining

• Processes for annual forklift and heavyequipment recertification

• Certification training and record keeping for working in confined spaces

3. Create More Touchpoint Opportunities

During any time of year, you, your engineers, material-handling specialists, order-pickers and assemblers will come to rely on morning or afternoon team startups. These give the group a chance to compare notes, prepare one another for what is ahead and bring pain points to managers' attention.

Consider increasing the frequency of touchpoints during the holiday season. Look for ways to have smaller,moreinformal,evenone-on-onemeetings. These give observant and safety-minded individuals opportunities to raise their concerns in a safe space. It's also a way for managers to call out positive behaviors and find places for growth. Maybe most importantly, it can be a morale toolemployees work more safely and conscientiously when they feel humanized and heard.

4. Strictly Enforce Alcohol and Drug Policies

Working in construction and manufacturing settings carries certain risks, but workers shouldn't expect an overtly dangerous workplace to greet them when their shift begins Safety during the holidays is even more of a team-wide obligation than usual, given the expected amount of drinking and other types of celebrating goingon

Gentle reminders about zero-tolerance alcohol policies may be appropriate during the holidays. However, it may be necessary to test staff members if they appear to be under the influence.

5. Understand and Communication about Specific Wintertime Safety Precautions

To keep your facility secure and your teams safe from harm, pay attention to the specific wintertime safety precautions required by your facility You can categorize them intothe followingbroadareas:

• Facility Preparation: Preparing high-traffic areas for slip-and-fall accidents (parking lots and concrete floors) and deploying temperature-control equipment as needed (on loading docks or in uninsulated annexes).

• Equipment Readiness: Which additional engineering controls or maintenance tasks are required to ensure vehicles or machines keep running in the cold? Post notices about these and add them to startup checklists. Machine operators may require additional training on weatherization procedures.

• Employee Health and Wellness: Ensure employees are supported concerning their health Encourage frequent hand-washing and getting adequate sleep and work breaks. Provide warm, healthful beverages and snacks in break areas.

Engage in Work with Grace and Flexibility

Management and front-line workers are under more intense pressure during the winter and holiday seasons. Build flexibility into your work schedule and relax some of your hyper-vigilance about turnarounds in favor of safety and peace of mind. By all means, work quickly - but make yours a culture where safety comes before anything else.
