What does this mean for the Clinic?
Addressing the Homeless Crisis in Los Angeles
Major Strides for Patient Care
Jerry recalls his first visit and how impressed he was with the quality care he received from the friendly staff: “Doctoring is about compassion, taking the time, listening. That’s what they do at the Clinic. I feel safe here.” He has been amazed with how the Clinic has grown from a mostly volunteer operation to a robust health center.
Jerry Craig’s Story In 1977, Jerry moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in entertainment. Jerry first learned about the then LA Free Clinic from a flyer at Los Angeles Community College where he was taking classes. Being new to LA and without insurance, he decided to check it out. Forty years later, he considers the Clinic his “home away from home” and feels tremendous gratitude for the Clinic: “It has been here for me for decades, even when my own union couldn’t take care of me.”
The Patient Centered Medical Home is a model of care that puts patients at the forefront of care. PCMHs build better relationships between people and their clinical care teams. Research shows that they improve quality, the patient experience and staff satisfaction, while reducing health care costs. (http://www.ncqa.org)
Patients are experiencing better service, increased access to providers and significantly shorter wait times. On average, the wait time has decreased by 39%.

A PATIENT FOR 40 YEARS
The PCMH model streamlines the internal process of medical care so SCC patients have a more fluid experience. SCC staff redesigned clinical workflows and found new ways to improve productivity, increase patient access, reduce patient wait times, and optimize use of technology. What does this mean for our patients?
Saban Community Clinic (SCC) is thrilled to announce that we have achieved Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) Level 3 recognition, the highest level, at all three sites! What is PCMH?
Today, Jerry continues to act and is a caretaker for his 92 year old friend, Warren. Thanks to the Clinic’s enrollment team, he has a comprehensive insurance plan through the ACA.Patient Jerry Craig (right) is Warren’s caretaker.
With Los Angeles County’s homeless population soaring 23% in the last year to a staggering 58,000 total individuals (Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority), the Clinic’s role in helping the homeless is more important than ever. Clinic staff members are dedicated to playing a vital role in the long term solution to the homeless epidemic. Across our three sites, comprehensive services are available to all those who walk through our doors. Free daily showers operate at two of our sites, hosting more than 7,000 showers a year. Clients who use the showers are also provided access to clean clothes and basic hygiene kits. Our experienced case management staff build long lasting relationships with this vulnerable population and navigates them to medical, dental, and behavioral health services within the Clinic. Case Managers provide referrals to external resources, including food, transportation, and housing. In 2016 our team worked with more than 4,000 homeless individuals, providing life-changing impact. 2

Far Out Health Fair Engages Community
On April 27th, more than 100 longtime supporters, community partners, volunteers, and local politicians filled the Penthouse at the London Hotel in West Hollywood to kick off the Clinic’s landmark 50th anniversary. The event provided an opportunity for the Clinic to acknowledge the countless contributions by such a passionate group and celebrate all we have achieved together to care for our community.
In celebration of National Health Center Week, the Clinic held a Summer of Love Your Health Fair on August 19th at our Wallis Annenberg Children and Family Health Center. Over 400 patients and community members enjoyed the 1960’s theme, free health screenings, food, games, crafts, and music. The event was produced in partnership with LA Supervisor Sheila Kuehl. • 190 health screenings were administered • 27 new patient appointments were made • 6 new attendees enrolled in coverage

FUN FACT!
Peace and Love at the Clinic Staff decorated the Clinic with groovy décor and dressed up in psychedelic garb to infuse the “Summer of Love” spirit in the Clinic. Both patients and staff enjoyed reminiscing about the Clinic’s early days when staff members were all volunteers and patients were young hippies who flocked to Hollywood.

Saban Community Clinic lost our dear friend, Michael Ogiens, who passed away on May 25, 2017. A dedicated volunteer, donor, and member of the Friends of the Saban Community Clinic Board for more than two decades, Michael committed countless hours to support the work of the Clinic. Michael first became involved with the Clinic in 1985 when we roasted Budd Grant, then President of CBS. He shared in our belief that healthcare is a right, not a privilege.
