YEAR TO DATE PATIENT VISITS 87,409 Our MobileClinic ison themove!

SCC has been serving the Los Angeles community for more than 55 years, providing services and creating programs that address the ever-changing needs of our patients. Our new Mobile Clinic started services in June and is meeting unhoused patients “where they are”. The Mobile Clinic visits 12 transitional housing partners, serving their clients and setting them on a path towards a brighter, healthier future.

Our mobile care team helps prepare clients in transitional housing for the shift to permanent housing by providing low barrier care. The program allows us to address health and dental care needs consistently, while building solid relationships between unhoused patients and our medical team. Patients are also linked to the SCC as their preferred long-term medical provider.

John’sstory

John’s work in the entertainment industry brought him to LA from New York decades ago. He’s lived close to the Beverly Clinic for years but never thought to go in until he lost his insurance with the Director’s Guild.

For years, John had been living in pain. He was very active growing up, went to college on a tennis scholarship and just attributed the pain to sports and the fact that he was getting older. “I just assumed that’s what it was like to get old after being active most of my life. I took a lot of extra strength Tylenol and lived with it,” says John.

He was in his early sixties when the pain got so bad, he could barely work. An injured knee and back, pulled hamstring,

a torn ligament in his elbow and carpal tunnel left him almost immobile. He was in chronic pain, overweight and depressed.

John began seeing Dr. Tinh Vuong five years ago when he couldn’t work and lost his insurance. She started using a variety of techniques including acupuncture and trigger point injections to help him with his pain. There was an immediate change. “When I first met John, he was in bad shape. He was hunched over and could barely walk. After just a few treatments his disposition changed. He came in with a smile on his face” says Dr. Vuong.

of pain management that are typically out of reach due to cost. It is the only one of its kind among all FQHC’s, providing cutting edge holistic non-pharmacological and non-surgical therapeutic alternatives for managing acute and chronic pain.

At his most recent visit Dr. Vuong used extracorporeal shockwave therapy (a noninvasive treatment that involves delivery of shock waves to injured soft tissue to reduce pain and promote healing). “I feel like I am 21 again. I am running three miles a day, skiing, sailing— doing all the things that I love. I didn’t see much future and hope after 60, until I came to the Clinic” says John.

Now that he has steady work again, John has access to health insurance through the Guild, but he has declined it. Instead, he continues to be a patient of the Clinic so that he can be under Dr. Vuong’s care.

Expanding services

The repercussions of COVID-19 are still being felt amongst our patients, especially related to demand for Behavioral Health services. The implementation of new programs and additional staff are allowing us to address the need.

LGBTQ+ Care

Our new therapist specializes in gender affirming care and individuals living with HIV, allowing us to meet our patients where they are with compassionate care.

Patients Experiencing Homelessness

Our new Licensed Clinic Social Worker is dedicated to working closely with many patients in our shower program who require the highest level of care.

New Teen Group

It’s hard to be a teenager. This group will teach relaxation, communication, problem solving and social skills to manage overwhelming emotions. Games and art will be utilized to teach each skill.

Mindfulness Group

Created to assist our patients of color. Our team facilitates discussions on mindfulness, guided meditations and provides useful resources.

Pampering new moms

On May 6th, the Clinic hosted an early Mother’s Day celebration for new moms with an afternoon of pampering. Patients enjoyed chair massages, manicures and made beautiful flower arrangements to take home.

SheStyles pop-up

On June 2nd, donor Shari Friedman and daughters, Jojo and Brooke, hosted the SheStyles pop up shop for the Clinic’s teen patients. The fun, interactive shopping event gave attendees the opportunity to shop through a curated selection of fashionable outfits. Patients walked away with huge smiles and bags full of free clothes.

Back to reality!

After a two-year hiatus, the 5th Annual Let’s Get Real event returned with a bang on August 22nd. The event honored Friends Board Member, David Eilenberg, Head of Roku Originals. More than 250 attendees enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres on the beautiful rooftop of Sant’olina restaurant. The unique event united the unscripted television community while raising awareness and funds for the Clinic.
