SOUTH AFRICAN FILM ABOUT OUR INDUSTRY South Africa has a vibrant film industry that is growing in reputation and is competitive internationally. Local and foreign filmmakers are taking advantage of the country’s diverse, unique locations, as well as low production costs and favourable exchange rate, which makes it more affordable to make a movie here than in Europe or the US. The jewel in the industry’s crown is Tsotsi, Gavin Hood’s gritty drama about a young gangster in Soweto, South of Johannesburg, which won an Academy Award for best foreign language film in 2006. In 2010, District 9 - an action-packed science-fiction movie about a sub-class of aliens forced to live in the slums of Johannesburg - was nominated for four Academy Awards, including best picture. South Africa also has a growing reputation as a producer of award-winning local content, such as Oscar-nominated Yesterday, the story of the struggles of an HIV-positive mother, and U-Carmen eKhayalitsha, a Xhosa-language film which won the Golden Bear award at the 2005 Berlin Film Festival. Documentary filmmaker Francois Verster’s A Lion’s Tale won a non-fiction Emmy in 2006, recognised for its “most outstanding cultural and artistic programming“. Building on South Africa’s reputation for quality and creative film making, a string of successful big budget international productions have been filmed here, including Fury Road, the fourth Mad Max film; Blood Diamond with Leonardo DiCaprio; and Clint Eastwood’s Invictus. Opportunities abound, with the makers of movies, commercials and other productions being attracted by South Africa’s highly skilled film crews and technicians, excellent technical capacity and infrastructure - as well as the good weather.

OUR MISSION ATFT is pleased to present its delegation of emerging filmmakers from South Africa to RIO Content Market. ATFT, together with the South African Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Wesgro, hosts the South African Indies Stand at RIO Content Market 2014 and has created this catalogue of companies and productions from South Africa in attendance at RIO Content Market 2014.

ATFT’S STATEMENT OF PURPOSE “To empower, develop and inspire black females, physically impaired and black individuals, as well as black-owned companies, and grow the South African Film, Television, Animation and Transmedia Industries”

ATFT’S HIGHEST ASPIRATION “An overall growth of 200% of South African content on local and international platforms of which 80% is made and sold by black females, physically impaired and black individuals, and black-owned companies by end 2018”

Post-production

A historical documentary about the life and times of Andrew Mokete Mlangeni. The 11th accused in the infamous Rivonia Trial, he spent 26 years on Robben Island in the fight for freedom alongside greats such as Walter Sisulu, Govan Mbeki, and Nelson Mandela. This film takes an intimate look at the sacrifices made by those committed to the ideals of justice and equality. What drove the heroes that made South Africa the miracle it is today? Telling the tale of the collective effort it takes to create a revolution, we shine the light on those relegated to the margins of history. As the world watches South Africa. As a nation holds its’ breath, praying. We remember that it takes more than a Mandela to free a nation. Andrew Mlangeni is one of those unsung heroes.

Rummy is bogged down with trying to start a family and an overbearing mother-in-law who just won’t move out. The overzealous Ace, on the other hand, can think of nothing better to do in the morning than to put on his “lucky” bulletproof vest and head out to kick some bad guy ass. Whilst in a poor white neighbourhood, trying to solve yet another smalltime crime, Rummy and Ace, along with their inept sniper colleagues, accidentally stumble upon a massive drug haul. What ensues is a series of mishaps as the duo encounter some of the city’s craftiest crooks in a race against time to catch the bad guys and claim their place in crime fighting glory. Entre Rios - Two Rivers Profile on Page 20

Development

Two Rivers is a journey down the longest rivers in Brazil and South Africa, the São Francisco and Orange Rivers. These ancient waterways have left their mark on the psyche of their riverine people over centuries. They also symbolize a colourful evolution towards national unity as they connect vast areas of natural and human life. Told through the eyes of their people, we experience past and present in the ambience, textures and spirit of life along these two natural marvels. Through a 13-part television series and online transmedia component, we will look beyond the apparent rhetoric of racial democracy in Brazil and the ‘rainbow nation’ of South Africa, exploring human histories, cultural, natural heritage and tourism, economic developments and tales of cities, disputes and wars that give life to a tempestuous past. Moving from source to mouth, the series creates rich accounts of subjective narratives of people who live at strategic points along the river course. The narrative is structured by weekly themes and driven strongly by stories told by the rivers’ inhabitants. This oral storytelling tradition, prevalent in both countries, weaves a nuanced account of difference, diversity and stunning contradiction in these two growing powerhouses of ‘the global south’.

Father and daughter set out on a road trip, come face to face with secrets and half truths about politics, global media and each other. Both an intimate look into the relationship between the pair and an interrogation of how media influences our opinions about President Robert Mugabe and the heated topic of land reform in Southern Africa. When I tell people my Papa wants to meet President Mugabe for his birthday gift, I come across many reactions: Why would a sober-minded 72 year old man want to meet a dictator, a murderous homophobe and election thief? On the other side of the opinion spectrum fists are raised to the brave freedom fighter standing up against neo-colonial forces. On-the-road has always been where my father and I talk most deeply. Besides the usual politics, it’s where we brainstorm how to get my father’s business back on track – without mentioning his gambling; we wonder if I am to die a spinster – without referring to my sexuality; and about my late mother – though never, ever about why she died so broken and alone

In South Africa the custom of male circumcision is taboo: a bastion protecting Xhosa tribal power from the influence of modern government. The tradition is as dangerous as it is secret. Last year more than 50 boys died and hundreds more were permanently disfigured or left infertile. Yet young men still flock to initiation school in their thousands, just as Xhosa director Mayenzeke Baza did as a teenager. The Boy, The Blade & The Man offers a unique window from the contemporary world into the past, contextualizing an occasionally brutal but deeply compelling tradition that is a ‘rite of passage’ for the Xhosa boy becoming a man. My personal experience has given me the insight and motivation to tell this story. I ask you to journey with me into this complex ritual, taking you by the hand to introduce you to the elements supposed to transform a Xhosa boy into a MAN. Does it really work? When I Was Water Profile on Page 21

Post-production

For 20 years, our camera has tracked Marry-Ann Mahlangu’s journey from girlhood to womanhood, set against South Africa’s transition from apartheid to democracy. Her unique story, as she moves between her traditional tribal roots and the bright lights of urban modernity, enables us to explore the rural/urban divide, and how western culture impacts on tradition. Her struggle to discover her true identity is dramatic, compelling and universal. It was not how we imagined it, except we knew it would embody a coming of age during a time of extreme change. After her initiation, Marry-Ann fell in love, with a fairy tale wedding marred by a murder. Later she was car hijacked while pregnant. After filming the birth of her daughter, her marriage collapsed due to infidelity and family tensions. Blood is thicker than water, she said later, “I was just water”. With her divorce, Marry-Ann’s world shattered, and when her favourite uncle died she had a nervous breakdown. Marry-Ann had to confront reality. Inspirational choices helped her construct a new identity that embraced conflicting worlds. In an hour we watch a girl grow into a woman and evolve from hope to tragedy and back to happiness. Director: David Forbes Duration 52 min (1 part) Format: HD Type: Documentary Feature Genre: Documentary Broadcasters: Shadow Films is a non-exclusive sales agent and distributor. Whole- A Trinity of Being Profile on Page 22 This trilogy takes the form of experimental documentary recounting the story of a survivor of one of the lesser- known wars in South Africa, namely the “taxi wars” where there is an ongoing battle for ownership of transport routes. Years after the shooting, Shelley tells the story through visual poetry. PIN PRICKS revisits the moments when the fabric of a woman’s life is torn and the revelations that take her beyond loss. VOICE/ OVER is an experimental video focusing on notions of voice, language and disability. ENTRY explores the re-insertion of images into a media that does not reflect people with disabilities as passionate and sensual beings. “ my experimental shorts deal with sexuality, visibility and voice from the perspective of a wheelchair user who turns the camera on herself to celebrate love and survival”
