FILM INDUSTRY South Africa has a vibrant film and television industry that is growing in reputation and is competitive internationally. Local and foreign filmmakers are taking advantage of the country’s diverse, unique locations, as well as low production costs and favourable exchange rate, which makes it more affordable to make a movie or shoot a TV show here than in Europe or the US.

South African films and television productions have attained substantial global recognition including an Academy Award for best foreign language film in 2006 for Tsotsi, Oscar-nominated films like Yesterday, and U-Carmen eKhayalitsha, a Xhosa-language film which won the Golden Bear award at the 2005 Berlin Film Festival. Documentary film A Lion’s Tale won a non-fiction Emmy in 2006, recognised for its “most outstanding cultural and artistic programming”. South Africa’s documentary and factual films continue to be selected for screening and receive recognition at international festivals including IDFA and HotDocs.

Opportunities abound, with the makers of movies, television, commercial and other productions being attracted by South Africa’s highly skilled film crews and technicians, excellent technical capacity and infrastructure, good weather and an incredible and stable film and TV production incentive that ranges from 20% to 50% depending on the kind of production and nature of ownership.

ursing is an essential service, and yet there is currently a shortage of nurses world wide. This is because less people aspire to take on nursing as a career, and from as far back as the 1960’s, rich countries have been poaching nurses from developing countries. If this is not changed soon, this will lead to a crisis where nursing will become available only to those who can afford it. This story will be told in tracking the history of black nurses in South Africa, whose services are in much demand around the world.

man takes a bus hostage to force the authorities to attend to his son’s medical needs. A
tour operator takes British tourists around Alexandra Township. He gives them history about how the township used to be infested by rats. He takes them to the mass grave site where the rats were buried. The rats come alive and dig their way out of the mass grave after lying dormant for a decade. They are now bigger and with twice as much strength. They’re out to take over the township. Stephen and the tourists find themselves stuck in Alex, when the government quarantines the township in order to stop the rats from spreading to the rest of the city.

here is a prevailing outcry phrase among the Zulu which says “lafa elihle kakhulu” meaning “cry the death of the (Zulu) nation”. This refers to the loss of values and customs among Zulu people. This documentary exposes colonial influences such as lobola (Bride Price) regulation as factors that hinder poor lovers from marrying. The poor are the majority among the Zulu nation. This film warns that the exclusion of the poor from marriage is a critical factor to the deterioration of a culture that the Zulu want to protect and celebrate.

azz Comes to Joburg is story of an artist Kwena Mokwena who creates a modern shrine, The Afrikan Freedom Station dedicated to spirit of his ancestor, Jacob Madumo – a legendary jazzman. To reach the original jazz spirits, Kwena has to face his estranged father and the memory of his mother burning. The film reveals what it might have been like to play jazz in the Johannesburg of the 1940’s, when a black man could never have called Joburg his own. The film is a sociological and spiritual response. It weaves the personal and political in a historical tale of musical triumph.

The Spanish divided Western Sahara, 16-years of war ensued. In 1991 the fighting ended and under the terms of a UN ceasefire agreement, a referendum for selfdetermination was promised. However, this has been continually blocked by Morocco, leaving the Saharawi to live either under occupation in Western Sahara or in four large refugee camps in the inhospitable Algerian desert. It examines the cause of this conflict and the reason’s why it is being shielded from the world and media.

rofile: Born in picturesque KwaZuluNatal, South Africa, Joseph Oesi is a veteran, award winning South African television news journalist. Oesi chose at a very early stage to focus on his first passion – namely telling stories through televisual/multi-media devices. With his vast experience it was only natural that Oesi would want to tell his own stories in the African continent.

he Apartheid government gained power on the back of an economy driven by mining. After 1994, South Africa was a symbol of hope but today the country shows signs of despair. The infamous Marikana massacre in 2012 shines a light on the insidious history of mining. In the documentary, we meet a father who lost his son, a widow with no money to feed her family, and a miner as they grapple with the ramifications of the 2012 tragic atrocity and go on their own personal journeys in search of answers.

ersonal Profile: Mhlaba Thomas Silinda is an upcoming producer who got involved in the film industry from 2008. He is currently working on his first project, a short film titled My Fear My Pain. The film is at production stage. Mhlaba’s love for video production started at a young age whilst at secondary school and further expanded during his tertiary education, at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Although Mhlaba did not formally study film production, he developed his skills in the filming industry. Mhlaba is running his own fast-growing company, Mhlaba Image Productions, based in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa, since 2008. A man who gained a position of power (possibly after decades of discrimination) is trying to prove his superiority to women by harassing a vulnerable subordinate. This man even regards it as a “fringe benefit” to which his position, his power and sex entitle him. In tough times of uncertainty, fear, limited promotion opportunities, retrenchments, personal and family stress and pressure on performance, there is a real danger that sexual harassment and trading of sexual favours will form part of the power games played. This short film is meant to highlight the “power game” type of sexual harassment at workplace. The series highlights the behaviour and self-centeredness of a sexual harasser, who is a manager but takes advantage of a young woman who is the head of her

t’s an $840 million development in Johannesburg, in South Africa’s Gauteng Province. “Modderfontein City” is what its being called now. Construction has just started with the first phase expected to be completed by 2016, but construction will continue over the next 15 to 20 years. By then it will become a complete city within a city. And its being funded by the Chinese. Shanghai Zendai is the company heading up this project and has dubbed it the “New York of Africa”. The feature documentary will capture the development as it progresses and question the social and economic impact of such a massive development.
