South African films and television productions have attained substantial global recognition including an Academy Award for best foreign language film in 2006 for Tsotsi, Oscar-nominated films like Yesterday, and U-Carmen eKhayalitsha, a Xhosa-language film which won the Golden Bear award at the 2005 Berlin Film Festival. Documentary film A Lion’s Tale won a non-fiction Emmy in 2006, recognised for its “most outstanding cultural and artistic programming”. South Africa’s documentary and factual films continue to be selected for screening and receive recognition at international festivals including IDFA and HotDocs. Building on South Africa’s reputation for quality and creative film making, a string of successful big budget international productions have been filmed here, including District 9, which was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture; Fury Road, the fourth Mad Max film; Blood Diamond with Leonardo DiCaprio; and Clint Eastwood’s Invictus. Opportunities abound, with the makers of movies, television, commercials and other productions being attracted by South Africa’s highly skilled film crews and technicians, excellent technical capacity and infrastructure, good weather and an incredible and stable film and TV production incentive that ranges from 20% to 50% depending on the kind of production and nature of ownership.

Through his writing endeavour and passion for the isiZulu language, he has been able to introduce 450 new words to the isiZulu language. The 450 new isiZulu words Phiwayinkosi introduced are written in his IsiZulu novel Amayiphendleya – IsiQalo Sakho Konke which is also released in English under the title, The Wiby Kids – How It All Began.

The lack of representations of black beauty, as well as the categorisation of what beauty, and more specifically, black beauty ought to look like is what the documentary will investigate. Lesbians, gay men, and transgender people in South Africa continue to face hostility and violence. This film will follow a Hindu gay couple who broke the stigma on homosexuality by getting married. Through their marriage we uncovered the secret gay life in the Hindu Indian culture. Similar stereotypes in Homosexuality and HIV/Aids appear. Lesbians are raped to ‘turn them, and straight some contract HIV/Aids from the ordeal.’

ersonal Profile: Enver has a BA in Media and Film Studies from Edith Cowan University, Australia. He joined Talent Consortium as a producer/ director. He was a producer/director for EMS Productions, working on numerous television productions for both SABC and MNet and high profile corporate videos, combining this with lecturing in Television Journalism/Production at the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism (IAJ). In addition to being a member of the Film and Publication Board, Enver serves on the National Film & Video Foundation’s (NFVF) training and bursary committee. In 2012 and 2013, Enver was a South African Film & Television Award Judge (SAFTA). Enver also co-ordinates local shoots for SBS TV – Australia. Enver had a 40% stake in award winning television company Tin Rage Productions who were awarded a SAFTA for best documentary series, Solving It.

ndians Can’t Fly is a 48-minute documentary that tells the story of Ahmed Timol, a 29-year-old Roodepoort teacher and anti-apartheid activist who ‘fell’ from the 10th floor of the notorious John Vorster Square security police building in Johannesburg in October 1971. His death in detention had a huge impact both locally and abroad. A police inquest concluded that Timol committed suicide while under interrogation, but questions remain whether he may have been pushed, or tortured to death and thrown from the window. The term Indians Can’t Fly was soon bandied about by the callous security police who used it both as a joke and a way to get detainees to talk.

ersonal Profile: Molatelo Mainetje is an award-winning television news and current affairs producer, video journalist and documentary filmmaker. She’s the winner of 2007 United Nations Media Peace Award in the TV News and Current Affairs category. Molatelo has for the past 10 years produced, written, directed and edited several documentary films in South Africa and on the continent, broadcast locally and internationally. Molatelo is the founder of Bolobathaba Filmmaking Project in rural GaModjadji in Limpopo Province. She’s currently serving as the Secretary of Documentary Filmmakers’ Association of South Africa, and a member of World Congress of Science and Factual Producers.

nternationally renowned musician Lady Africa was born Margaret Mcingana. She was forced to modify herself to suit her white audience during Apartheid; one of the few musicians allowed to perform in the country. Singana suffered a stroke in 1978 and when she made a comeback years later, she went big with William Faure’s successful television series Shaka Zulu theme song, We are Growing. Little did she know that would be her last bow. After touring the world, tragedy fell on her home soil. A mysterious incident that remains unreported till now leaves her wheel-chair bound. Singana died in 2000.

s a descendant of a resilient fighter in a war against Apartheid, I examine freedom, angle by angle and ask the most important question: Was it worth it? Freedom has always been a ‘destination’ in South Africa, something that was fought for and ultimately attained. I find it to be quite a restless place and question its divinity. Ma’Ngoyi’s influence is still felt to this day, as each year women stand in remembrance of one of the greatest demonstrations of the struggle when she orchestrated a march of 20 000 women in protest against the pass laws that existed then.

aartjie Baartman, a Khoisan woman born in 1789 in Gamtoos River, South Africa. Died 29 December 1815 in France, Paris. Famously known for her large buttocks. She was barely in her 20’s when she was sold to London by a Scottish doctor named Alexander Dunlop. She then became an exhibited freak show attraction in the 19th century for Europeans, who called her a “Hottentot Venus”. After the death of Dunlop she joined the circus, where she carried on entertaining people. No longer needed, Baartman ended up becoming a prostitute and died of diseases. Her body was cut up and showcased in a museum in Paris.

In 2009, it hosted Khanyisa Bunu and Friends comedy show at the Queenstown Town hall which became a huge success. in 2012 it then hosted Khanyisa Bunu and friends at the Grahamstown National arts Festival in Grahamstown. Bread and Butter entertainment then produced the

young boy who played soccer and had dreams of becoming a professional footballer was on the verge of being promoted to the professional league. As he was travelling with his team to play soccer in another town, tragedy struck. The transport that they were using got into an accident.
