ABOUT THE

SOUTH AFRICAN

FILM INDUSTRY South Africa has a vibrant film and television industry that is growing in reputation and is competitive internationally. Local and foreign filmmakers are taking advantage of the country’s diverse, unique locations, as well as low production costs and favourable exchange rate, which makes it more affordable to make a movie or shoot a TV show here than in Europe or the US. South African films and television productions have attained substantial global recognition including an Academy Award for best foreign language film in 2006 for Tsotsi, Oscar-nominated films like Yesterday, and U-Carmen eKhayalitsha, a Xhosalanguage film which won the Golden Bear award at the 2005 Berlin Film Festival. Documentary film A Lion’s Tale won a non-fiction Emmy in 2006, recognised for its “most outstanding cultural and artistic programming”. South Africa’s documentary and factual films continue to be selected for screening and receive recognition at international festivals including IDFA and HotDocs. Building on South Africa’s reputation for quality and creative film making, a string of successful big budget international productions have been filmed here, including District 9, which was nominated for four Academy Awards, including best picture; Fury Road, the fourth Mad Max film; Blood Diamond with Leonardo DiCaprio; and Clint Eastwood’s Invictus. Opportunities abound, with the makers of movies, television, commercial and other productions being attracted by South Africa’s highly skilled film crews and technicians, excellent technical capacity and infrastructure, good weather and an incredible and stable film and TV production incentive that ranges from 20% to 50% depending on the kind of production and nature of ownership.

stone’s throw from the excesses and privilege of Africa’s richest square mile - Sandton is a very tough neighbourhood - Alexandra - whose socio-economics couldn’t be more diametrical. Here, we meet a very pretty 86 year-old matriarch, Claire and Lulu her cat. Claire and Lulu are passionate about the mean-looking and sculpted body-building young-men in Claire’s backyard gym. The tiny gym doubles up as a tattoo parlour and fine art studio. The gym harbours the aspirations of many, including; Tumi, unpredictable as a volcano at rest, and a fine artist, tattoo artist and body-builder. Bobo is an introspective body-builder cum-commuter taxi driver and arm wrester, and Gino, a complex, multi-layered struggling boxer and single parent to an ambitious little girl. Over two years, the film follows Claire, Lulu and the guys from the gym as they navigate an

escalating series of treacherous streets and decisions. Through Claire’s wise counsel, spirit and aura she helps to galvanise the young men to become better navigate their surroundings. The film unveils and presents an intimate portrait of these protagonists with similar problems yet different aspirations for their lives. luta is a political thriller with rough edges. Centred around an ex-MK solider who has entered the world of politics, but is forced to take up arms again when he is thrust into the middle of a plot to kill the president. 20 years into South African democracy, an apartheid veteran faces a war of a different kind, going against fat cats who want a lion’s share and won’t mind breaking a few bones to get it. Finding inspiration from television shows and films like ‘Prison Break’ and ‘The Fugitive’, Aluta is a genuine South Africa project whose origins are based on a true story. This is a film that speaks to our history, our present and our future, with strong characters who not only speak about their problems, but are courageous enough to put themselves on the line and face them.

n Soweto, a number of youths from the township who were passionate about music, particularly their love for “hip hop”, came together to form a platform that was to become a movement that changed the face of hip hop in SA - to create, share and relish in local hip hop. This was the beginning of a conscious shift from an American rapping style influence to a new era - rapping in indigenous South African languages.

t is a documentary on beauty from a Black African perspective. The word Bontle means beauty. It is about the writer’s personal journey, a tribute to South Africa’s beauty icons past and present, and to a good friend called Bontle, who was very beautiful and loved all things beautiful and is no more. As there are no shortages of beauty images in all forms from a Western or White point, Bontle will be a breath of fresh air! Does beauty transcend race and politics? Twenty years into democracy in South Africa, what is the mind shift, if any?

Am ... Craig traces the journey of a young South African over 5 life altering years of his life through his female to male transition. The film focuses on the emotional journey that the ‘sex change’ takes the protagonist, his immediate family and friends. Craig shifts from being petulant and singlemindedly focused on his own psychological needs to being more aware of just how much work is involved in bringing his family on board this journey. His family, fearful of the impact the transition will have on Craig’s health and his relationship with a broader community are initially helpless to make him see reason. Through two surgeries, job losses and failed relationships, we follow Craig as he grows into the man he has always known himself to be. Through candid verite scenes and animated sequences, we enter a world that only outwardly seems different. The film

celebrates the universal themes of family, self and identity against the backdrop of a modern South Africa. rom the streets of Nyanga Township, neighbor to Cape Town International Airport, Mdu watches a sky that is littered with the sight and noise of low flying aeroplanes. To most people in Nyanga, this serves as a constant reminder of South Africa’s prevailing economic divide. But to 12 year old Mdu, and his two friends, it is an inspiration. Together with Thabo, a boy on his bicycle from out of town, and Gadgets, an aloof inventor, Mdu finds partners in pursuit of a common goal: to build and fly a remote control plane. To achieve flight, the boys must navigate the restrictive realities of the township, tormenting school bullies, and their own personal internal struggles. An epic adventure filled with laughs, bike chases, wild animals, young romance, football, and a series of failed attempts at

flight ensues. The boys must each find in themselves the courage and resolve to succeed, and from each other, the inspiration and support to aspire to heights greater than their reality would seem to allow. Their chances of success hinge on the strength of the friendship they forge. Will they fly? Will they fall? Or will they become the first township pilots to navigate the Nyanga Sky? ONE LIFE AFTER NATURE FTB Multimedia

t was all through natural remedies that maintained the relationship between mud and man. A thousand years ago, the majority of the African race verily relied on natural substances. Throughout the years the average African male and female have disconnected themselves from the ancient ways of healing. Today we discover how birth has revolutionized our lives; in ancient times a premature child did not experience going through modern medical care procedures, it was all through natural remedies maintaining the relationship between mud and man. We follow three women born prematurely and 25 women who have to decide between technology and nature, to determine what we trust for the future of our children: technology or nature. The story that will discover the truth about us, who we are and where we come from, if culture is what made me, why do I have

subscribe to another foreign ideology? A future of three to convince 25 women to return to their cultures, if science can prove it why wait?
