ABOUT THE

SOUTH AFRICAN

FILM INDUSTRY South Africa has a vibrant film industry that is growing in reputation and is competitive internationally. Local and foreign filmmakers are taking advantage of the country’s diverse, unique locations, as well as low production costs and favourable exchange rate, which makes it more affordable to make a movie here than in Europe or the US. The jewel in the industry’s crown is Tsotsi, Gavin Hood’s gritty drama about a young gangster in Soweto, South of Johannesburg, which won an Academy Award for best foreign language film in 2006. In 2010, District 9 - an action-packed science-fiction movie about a subclass of aliens forced to live in the slums of Johannesburg - was nominated for four Academy Awards, including best picture. South Africa also has a growing reputation as a producer of awardwinning local content, such as Oscar-nominated Yesterday, the story of the struggles of an HIV-positive mother, and U-Carmen eKhayalitsha, a Xhosa-language film which won the Golden Bear award at the 2005 Berlin Film Festival. Documentary filmmaker Francois Verster’s A Lion’s Tale won a non-fiction Emmy in 2006, recognised for its “most outstanding cultural and artistic programming”. Building on South Africa’s reputation for quality and creative film making, a string of successful big budget international productions have been filmed here, including Fury Road, the fourth Mad Max film; Blood Diamond with Leonardo DiCaprio; and Clint Eastwood’s Invictus. Opportunities abound, with the makers of movies, commercials and other productions being attracted by South Africa’s highly skilled film crews and technicians, excellent technical capacity and infrastructure - as well as the good weather.

luta is a political thriller with rough edges. Centred around an ex-MK solider who has entered the world of politics, but is forced to take up arms again when he is thrust into the middle of a plot to kill the president. 20 years into South African democracy, an apartheid veteran faces a war of a different kind, going against fat cats who want a lion’s share and won’t mind breaking a few bones to get it. Finding inspiration from television shows and films like ‘Prison Break’ and ‘The Fugitive’, Aluta is a genuine South Africa project whose origins are based on a true story. This is a film that speaks to our history, our present and our future, with strong characters who not only speak about their problems, but are courageous enough to put themselves on the line and face them.

historical documentary about the life and times of Andrew Mokete Mlangeni. The 11th accused in the infamous Rivonia Trial, where he was given a life sentence. Andrew spent 26 years on Robben Island in the fight for freedom alongside greats such as Walter Sisulu, Govan Mbeki, and Nelson Mandela. This film takes an intimate look at the sacrifices made by those committed to the ideals of justice and equality. What drove the heroes that made South Africa the miracle it is today? Telling the tale of the collective effort it takes to create a revolution, we shine the light on those relegated to the margins of history. As the world watches South Africa. As a nation starts to question the true value of democracy. We remember that it takes more than a Mandela to free a nation. Andrew Mlangeni is one of those unsung heroes.

tale of death, destruction and DNA. The 19-year-old Zulu king – my great grandfather – was forced into exile for 10 years from 1889 to the island of St Helena in the Atlantic Ocean while Britain consolidated its hold on his kingdom. His most ardent supporter, Harriet Colenso - daughter of the Bishop of Natal – and her sister, Francis, visited him on the island and he had an affair with her. Harriet campaigned tirelessly for his release. She was regarded as a “heretic” and she was accused of being Dinizulu’s “whore”. While in exile he fathered numerous children with members of his entourage, entertained visiting dignitaries and polished his skills on the piano and as a cricketer and horseman. On his return to Natal, he tried to reunite the Zulus and attempted to reclaim his kingdom without success. He died in poverty without realising his dream.

wenty years after the hell of Apartheid, 34 miners were gunned down by the SA police force, bringing into question the qualities of the newfound democracy under the ANC. After 1994, South Africa was a symbol of hope but today the country shows signs of despair. The massacre shines a light on the insidious history of mining. Despite the many fruits of freedom, unemployment, poverty and inequality have grown to unsustainably higher levels – making South Africa one of the most unequal society on earth. In scenes reminiscent of the 1980s, the townships and workplaces are up in arms clamouring for decent public services and living wages. In the documentary, we meet a father who lost his son, a widow with no money to feed her family, and a miner as they grapple with the ramifications of the tragic atrocity and go on their own personal journeys in

search of answers. ‘Mining for Power’ explores these issues by interweaving these personal accounts into an investigation that unpacks the connection between the lucrative business of mining and the powers that rule the country. Questioning how much ordinary South Africans, since the formal end of Apartheid, have really benefited from democracy. n a divided city, Slewboy and his friends Layla, Thando and Dave are graffiti artist’s, part of a ‘born-free’ generation disillusioned by the democracy they were born into. Slewboy- our protagonist- falls into the rut of the unemployed freelancer who cannot afford to study further. Growing up amongst gang violence in Manenberg to a single mom, he finds solace in the Base Collective - a gathering of young graffiti artists and hipsters from Cape Town- where he and others like him discuss trending topics within the current election year. On a throw-up mission, Slewboy and his friends get made by a security guard and a serious accident sends them to seek help from blasé police. This angers the crew who congregate at the Base to plan a mass graffiti bomb mission in retaliation for indifferent police. Their mission makes news as business owners turn on them, threatening legal action against what they call ‘vandals and criminals’. Seen as growing gang terrorism, the authorities and

JP- the officer in charge- strengthen measures. When Slewboy and the crew find out that the friend who had inspired their retaliation had been moved into police custody before he died, an overnight agitprop movement begins. Graffiti artists make their resentment known in illegal throw-ups criticising authorities and corporation, risking getting arrested and brutally beaten. Will the the authorities catch up to the Base collective, before a real bomb signals the beginning of a fully-fledged revolution? ased on historic events, “Maluju Mame”, is a tapestry of music, dance and drama that explores the anger of women of uMkhumbane (Cato Manor) in 1959. The story is told through a factitious character of MaMsibi, a popular charismatic shebeen owner. Set against the backdrop of racial segregation, the women begin brewing pseudo-spirits and creating shebeens. The idea of shebeens spread through the township like wild fire and soon become centres of entertainment, and took centre stage in gambling and petty crimes. Despite several attempts from the police cracking down on shebeens, they become more and more popular amongst the residents. This results in aggressive raids and massive arrests. In court they are acquitted on all charges of illegal brewing following forensic evidence revealing that traditional beer is more of food stuff than alcohol. This provokes the authorities even more and declaring home brewing illegal.

Things begin to snowball when shebeen popularity reaches an all-time high and homes become impoverished with no source of income. The women then resolve to put an end to their men visiting these beer halls that benefit the White Baas. They storm into the city centre beating men out of the beer halls. Due to police intervention the men turn against the police and set the beer halls alight.
