PRESIDENT’S REPORT Dear Member, The AGM of our Club is drawing near and it is pleasing to note that our Club has again recorded a healthy profit that exceeds last year’s profit figure. These results are only possible due to the continued support from you, the Member, and of course our superb management team led by C.E.O. Chris McCarthy and his Assistant General Manager, Carl Pozzato, as well as an enthusiastic Board. Similarly, the enthusiasm of the staff team has contributed to this success. Full details together with information on the now completed sale of the “Hawk’s On Second” site are reported further on in this journal. The Bistro renovations are now complete and we hope that members are pleased with the new design. The next renovation will be a revamp of the Foyer and Coffee Shop, and these renovations are expected to commence early in 2017. The Board and Management are progressing with further plans for our properties and details will be available after these plans have been presented to Ryde Council for further discussion. The Club recently held two functions for organisations for which we are the major sponsors (Eastwood Ryde Netball Association and Balmain District Junior Rugby League) and we extend congratulations to both organisations on very well organised and very successful nights. The Club received a framed jumper and netball uniform from each organisation, and our thanks go to these sports for their appreciation. The Club is also the major sponsor of the Adam Gardiner Fund which held a further fundraising event at the end of October to raise funds for the research and treatment of Amyloidosis, with proceeds going to the Institute for Immunology and Allergy research at Westmead Hospital. Director Jim McClymont has recently had a stay in Hospital for a major operation and all at the Club wish Jim a speedy recovery. Jim will be honoured with Life Membership of Leagues Clubs Australia in November for his services on their Board over the past decade. Members will note that the Club has commenced late night trading and full details are displayed throughout the Club. The move to extended trading is to compete with all our major competitors who have traded extended hours now for some time. Again, on behalf of the Board and Management, may I thank all members for their continued support which keeps our Club at the forefront in this Industry. Keith Aggett. President

FOOTBALL REPORT The 2016 Intrust Super League competition has now concluded with our team being eliminated in the Grand Final qualifier by the Mounties team. The team finished in third spot on the competition table after 22 rounds and lined up against the eventual premiers, the Illawarra Cutters, in the first semi-final but were beaten 32 to 22 after a hard fought contest. The following week the team played the Wyong side and were successful by 26 to 16, and went on to play Mounties the following week for a place in the Grand Final. After leading for the better part of the match, they were beaten in the final minutes and thus denied the chance of taking out the Premiership. This was a great effort by the team, which used 41 players over the year, and credit goes to their coach and his staff under difficult times throughout the Season. The R.E.D.R.L.F.C. will again sponsor the West Tigers Intrust Super League team for season 2017, with future sponsorship to be determined in the 2017 season when the NRL and the NSWRL will outline full details of the competition(s) to be run in 2018 and subsequent years.

The Annual General Meeting of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club will be held in the Heritage Function Centre at the Club on Thursday 24 November at 7.30pm in the Willandra function room. RYDE-EASTWOOD LEAGUES CLUB

The Fitness Edge Swim School offers a safe, friendly and encouraging environment for people of all ages and abilities. Our youngest students are 6 months of age and our most senior member is in their 70s. It’s never too late to learn the life skill of swimming. All staff at The Fitness Edge are Austswim Qualified and all hold current CPR certification.

For further details, please call the Swim School office on 9808 7617. Or check out our web page at: www.releagues.com.au then click on Swim School.

“Learning to swim has many benefits for our children. It’s great for their health and well being, it enhances their self-esteem and importantly teaches them a respect for water. While children are capable of being independently mobile in the water from a very young age, they must never be left unsupervised. No child is drown proof”. Laurie Lawrence

Saturday: 8am – 1.15pm

Our office hours during term time are: Monday – Friday: 10am – 6pm

Babies & Preschool classes are held Monday to Friday between 11am and 1pm. There are limited Preschool positions on Saturdays. All Instructors for these classes are qualified in Austswim Infant and Preschool Aquatics. School Age Learn to Swim classes are by far the most popular. The classes cater for all school ages and abilities. The focus for younger children is on safety and gaining confidence; from there we develop all swimming strokes. Our more serious swimmers move onto Stroke Correction and Squads. While the main focus in these levels in still correct technique, we also develop speed and racing skills. Places in these classes are very limited and are subject to an assessment of a new swimmer’s ability and available classes. Adult classes are held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning. Beginner classes are for members who are not confident to swim with their faces in the water, and intermediate classes are for members who can swim but want to improve their technique. The Fitness Edge has its own Swim Club which is a parent-based club that offers children an opportunity to show case what they have learned in their lessons. Home-based carnivals are generally held on the first Friday of each month, starting at 6pm. Members of the Swim Club must be currently enrolled in the Swim School. One parent must be a financial member of the Swim Club and volunteer to help out on carnival nights.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT Dear Member, It is pleasing to once again announce an increase in our net profit for the most recent financial year. The net profit was $5,373,460 compared to $5,289,330 for the previous year, 2014-15. This result was a great boost for the Club, particularly with some difficult trading months at the beginning and end of the financial year. Our thanks goes to GM, Chris McCarthy, and Assistant GM, Carl Pozzato, and their excellent group of managers and team leaders as well as our dedicated line staff for their efforts in helping to achieve this result. To our Board members, my sincere thanks for their support to me and their efforts and dedication to the Club, with some tough decisions having to be made during the year. Members will note the sale of the “Hawks” site is now complete with the Club receiving $16.5 million for the Property. As the sale was not finalised until early July the results are not shown in this year’s accounts. The deposit amount ($1.65m) is shown in this year’s accounts in the balance sheet at this stage, and will be transferred to the profit and loss account for the next financial year (2016/17). The balance of the sale revenue will also be shown in next year’s accounts, as will the net profit figure associated with the sale. Due to the complexity of our tax laws and the fact that the contract was entered into last financial year, the capital gains tax applicable on the sale had to be

calculated and provision made in the accounts this year, so the ATO can get their tax payment early. An amount of $2,694,205 has been entered in our accounts as a provision for capital gains tax for the Hawks sale. After writing off the outstanding depreciated value for the Hawks site in our accounts, writing back costs associated with the rezoning and development application and costs associated with the sale, and paying the CGT on the sale, the net proceeds on the sale of the site should be just over $10m. This figure will be finalised and included in next year’s accounts along with the club’s normal trading figures. All profits from this and the sale of the three other properties adjoining the Hawks site (proposed for late 2016) will go toward the cost of the planned development of properties closer to our main site. We expect the initial outlay for this redevelopment will be significant and will require expenditure of much of the accumulated capital. So again, thanks are extended to all concerned for their efforts and contribution and also to all members for their continued support. Director Dennis Petkovich has been nominated for Life Membership of the Club and this will be put forward at the A.G.M. for consideration and approval. Dennis has given yeoman service to our Club for over 15 years and we wish him well for this nomination. Keith Aggett. President

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT Members, In reviewing previous reports to prepare for this year’s report I thought a different approach might be to leave most of last year’s information in and provide an update for this year. In 2015 I reported on a record trading profit for the fourth year in a row and I’m pleased to say we have now extended that to five years. The profit figure of $5,373,460 is a small increase on the previous year and probably would have been better if not for six weeks of election campaigning for the Federal Election held in early July, and the uncertainty that went with it, which had a very negative effect on trade during that period. Good financial results are important but only part of the job of managing your Club for your benefit. I have detailed other aspects of the business that I discussed late year and provided an update for this year. 2015 report. In last year’s report I advised that we proposed to use the funds saved from the repeal of the Carbon Tax to invest in new energy savings initiatives. We have just commenced the replacement of the down lights in the function area with new LED globes. At the same time we are also upgrading to LEDs in various other areas throughout the Club in order to completely replace this old technology. We have also embarked on an upgrade to the air conditioning system to the Golden Hawk Restaurant and the Auditorium, to link them to the Club’s main air conditioning system. The Restaurant work should be completed in early November while the Auditorium upgrade will be undertaken in early 2016 along with a planned refurbishment of this area. The air conditioning upgrades were completed and both are operating well, and the LED upgrade for the Function Centre and some other areas within the Club were also completed. This upgrade leaves only a small handful of old downlight technology in the Club. 2015 The refurbishment of the Auditorium, while not extensive, will upgrade the finishes in this area, in keeping with the rest of the Club. We are also finalising plans for upgrading most areas on the ground floor. The refurbishment won’t be major but will, we hope, provide an invigorated look for some areas which are starting to ‘age’. The Auditorium refurbishment was completed early in the year and provides a modern contemporary look for this area. In addition we did a very minor upgrade to the outdoor gaming area and just recently we completed a makeover of the Bistro which included new furniture which has given this area a fresh new look, and we hope you like the result.

2015 The Club’s Board has resolved to call for Expressions of Interest for the sale of the Hawks on Second Avenue site at Eastwood. We hope this process will be finalised early in 2016. The Hawks on Second site was sold, with the settlement occurring in early July 2016. This created some complexity for the auditors in relation to Capital Gains Tax provisions and the preparation of our annual accounts. I refer you to the President’s Report to clarify that a little more. The proceeds of that sale will be included in next year’s annual financial statement. 2015 The Master Plan that was completed in 2014 and additional planning exercises, have kept us busy throughout 2015. With the expected completion of the Hawks on Second sale process, the Club will be able to focus more closely on the next planning phase in relation to the Club itself and other local property holdings. Now that the Hawks sale has been finalised, we have turned our attention to the redevelopment of land holdings closer to the club and are currently preparing a submission to Council to be able to discuss our plans in more detail. More details will be provided to members in future journals. 2015 As always, my thanks to our great management team, and also our line staff, led by Assistant General Manager Carl Pozzato. Experienced, capable and supportive and always looking after the best interests of the Club and its members. I could say the above sentence in a different way, but there is no need, as this statement encompasses my thoughts and I reaffirm them for the current year. 2015 For the last few years I have predicted a sustained period of political stability in the Club Industry which had been battered by Federal and State Governments on a number of issues. That prediction has been relatively correct and while we hope that will continue, I’m sure there will always be some politicians with an agenda to keep us on our toes. The anti-gambling lobby is still active in pursuing their agenda and no doubt this will be ongoing. I also have no doubt that these lobbyists will at some point be joined again by the anti-smoking and anti-alcohol campaigners just to ensure we spend a sufficient amount of time not focusing on other aspects of running the club. From a local point of view we hope the saga of the Local Government Area boundaries is resolved and our Local Council, whatever it is to be called, can also concentrate on looking after the affairs of Council rather than looking over their shoulder. Once again an interesting year, with your Club capably led by Keith Aggett and the Board which continually strives to look for the best outcomes for the Club for both the present and the future. Thank you for your support and we look forward to another year. Chris McCarthy. General Manager

INTERNAL CLUB NEWS CAMERA CLUB This past year has seen the Camera Club grow and strengthen with so many new members and ideas. We have been all over Sydney on photographic excursions and participated in several domestic and international competitions. This year we sent photos to Eastwood in the United Kingdom and also competed in a TransTasman while domestically we competed against Dooleys of Lidcombe and Port Hacking Camera Clubs. We have continued with our digital evenings where skills with Photoshop and the use of the camera are proving very popular. Our list of presenters continues to grow with some famous names in the photographic world talking about a wide variety of subjects to encourage us. The Camera Club is a friendly society that meets twice a month and welcomes new members. You can visit at any time to have a look with no obligation. The second Monday of the month is the presentation night and the fourth Monday of the month is always our competition night. We would like to thank the directors of Ryde-Eastwood for their continuing support. We hope everyone has a safe and happy Christmas and look forward to providing the club with more examples of our work for everyone’s enjoyment. You can find out more about our club and its activities at: www.pbase.com/ relccc John Maynard. CHESS CLUB The interclub Grade Matches finished in July. Our U2100 team finished second out of 4 teams, the U1700 team won their division of 4 teams, and the U1500 team came equal second out of 7 teams. Individual board prizes were won by Arthur Huynh, Egon Cardenas, Patrick Wiggins and Mohan Pagadala. The club Blitz championship was held in mid-August and was won by Donato Mallari and Arthur Huynh with Raymond Li in third place. The Bobby Fischer Cup, held in late August, was won by Raymond Li, with Donato Mallari second and Arthur Huynh third, with Michael Anderson, Les Mikolajczyk and Yifu Wu winning the U1600 section. The annual RydeEastwood Open was hosted at the club over the October long weekend and attracted 51 players, including two International Masters. It was won by IM Igor Bjelobrk and Dmitri Silver with a score of 6/7. The club championship finals and the club’s “Classic” tournament start on 13 October. As always, new players of any standard are welcome on Wednesdays at 7:30pm. Visit our website at www.rydeeastwoodchessclub.blogspot.com. Contact Les Mikolajczyk (0412 970 059) or Rob Watson (0408 463 759). TRAVEL CLUB Winter is behind us and spring is in the air! We had our Xmas in July Luncheon and enjoyed an August outing to the famous Doyle’s Restaurant at Watson’s Bay for a great seafood lunch. Next trip was to Yarramalong Valley/Medowie. The country was green with spring growth. Had Morning Tea at the Macadamia Farm where we strolled among the blossoming trees and learned of the cycle of its growth and harvesting. Then we circled back through the harbour side of North Newcastle for Lunch. Finally speeding down the highway to Sydney. Unfortunately, we missed the valley, so we will leave that to another trip. Our planned trip to Floriade/Canberra was cancelled, but we will rebook it next year. In October we enjoyed luncheon at the TAFE College of Cooking. We had a very good attendance to enjoy the best cooking skills. In November it’s the BIG Race that stops the nation, the Melbourne Cup Lunch at Wing’s, so bring your Luck and Money for that Bet. A first for the club is the Pre-Christmas Morning Tea. Just a warm-up for Christmas and the chance for members to have a chat; a good attendance is expected at this event. Finally for the year, there is the annual Christmas luncheon, which will be held at the club, so keep the date of the 13th open. Come and enjoy the Christmas feel, and have a good New Year!

EUCHRE CLUB The Euchre Club held a mid-year dinner in the Golden Hawk Restaurant which was attended by the players, their partners and our patron, Paul Moujalli, and his wife, Dianne. Everyone enjoyed a great night. Congratulations to our monthly winners: July: 1st Rhonda Fekete, 2nd Bede Bendeich. August: 1st Peter Keast, 2nd Pierina Dick. September: 1st Elaine Duncan, 2nd Peter Lamberton & Ray Stewart. We extend an invitation to any experienced Euchre players to join us on Wednesday evenings at 7.20pm in the Willandra Room. At the conclusion of the evening a light supper is served. For further information please contact our President, Don Baillie on 9869 2857.June Stewart. THE FISHING CLUB The last couple of fishing trips have had sunny days and good seas. The August outing had excellent results, with a catch of 54 morwongs, plus many other species. George thought he had the fish of the year on and called for the net. It turned out to be a 10-12kg Port Jackson shark. Sam was the winner on the day with a 8.35kg of good fish. Steve Adamson said the whales came very close to the boat, causing Nick, Sam and Steve to lose their sinkers. Nothing better than fishing and whale watching at the same time! Our October outing netted 53 fish weighing 23.5kg. Winnie called for the net and landed a 3kg Shovel Nose shark. They fight well. We don’t count sharks in our competition. Garry got the heaviest fish, a 1.12kg morwong, and Sam the heaviest bag at 4.4kgs. The fishing club organises monthly deep-sea charter boat fishing trips on the first Sunday of most months. Any interested club member should contact Michael Cheng on 0449 518 357, or attend the monthly fishing club meeting on the third Thursday of each month at 8pm. Fishing Club President, Trevor Fahey. GOLF CLUB Congratulations to our Pairs Champions for 2016, Tony T. and Frank V., and runners-up, Rick B. and Dave W. Team Shield honours this year go to Slava & Steve Mac. Springwood hosted a small field and our winner on the day was Tony T., and runner-up Alan H. Dunheved hosted the final of the Matchplay and it was a close game, coming to the wire on the last hole, but Steve Ferns snuck in and beat Rick Beves. The rest of the field played Stableford and the winner was Tony T. and runner-up Dave W. Championships started at Glenmore Park and true to form the course proved to be a challenge for most; winners on the day were Robert W. (A grade) and Slava (B Grade), with runners-up Steve Ferns and Jeff A. Richmond hosted round 2 of the championships with the day’s winner being Slava and runner-up Brian E. Good luck to everyone in the final round of the Championships at Penrith. Don’t forget to check the website for full results www.relgolfclub.com INDOOR BOWLS Members of the Indoor Bowls Club were saddened to learn of the recent passing of Merle Roach. Merle was secretary/treasurer of our bowls club for many years, and after retiring she continued her support by attending our functions or visiting our games whenever she was able. Those members selected to play in the NSW team enjoyed the opportunity to compete at the Australian Championships held in Shellharbour in August. New members are always welcome to join our social bowls club. Ladies play Wednesday 10.30 am – 2.00pm, and mixed play Thursday 7.15 pm – 10 pm. For enquiries please phone Narelle on 8065 9284 or Cath on 0413 600 019. SENIORS CLUB It is with great sadness that one of our longstanding members, Nancy Williamson, passed away on 17th September. She will be greatly missed – with her infectious smile and great sense of humour she was loved by everyone. Our condolences go to her family

and her many friends. Again we have had a busy three months with our monthly walks and bus trips. We had a guided tour (by bus) of the Port Kembla Steelworks – a very impressive and huge steel plant. We also had a delightful, if very cold trip, to the Everglades Gardens in Leura where the blossom and rhododendron trees were in full bloom. We have more trips planned for 2017 including the “Cockatoo Run” taking us to Robertson in the Southern Highlands for lunch. As per every year, we are all looking forward to our annual Christmas lunch held in the function centre in the Club. Our meetings are on the first and third Thursday of every month at 11am in the club’s function centre. A game of cards (Solo) is played every Thursday at 1.30pm. Our annual fee is only $5, so come along and make new friends. For more information please contact Marie Weston, Secretary, on 9638 7419. SQUASH CLUB Unlike the previous two seasons, our current competition team has shot to the front of their pack at this early stage of the NSW Squash Spring Pennant. We wish them a successful journey for the remainder of this competition. On the back of Australia’s recent campaign success at the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, it is very pleasing to announce that the Squash Club also has sporting ‘royalty’ within our midst. At the end of August, Ernie Speed (Squash Club President) and his wife, Bev Speed (Squash Club Secretary) competed in the Australian Squash Masters, held in Darwin. Ernie was awarded the prestigious title of Australian Squash Champion (75-79 year old division) and Bev (and her team mates) impressively finished as runners-up in the Teams Event. Congratulations to both Ernie and Bev on these spectacular achievements. The Squash Club Presentation Dinner on Saturday 19 November at RydeEastwood Leagues Club rounds out the club’s very busy event calendar for 2016. If you are interested in attending this function, which celebrates our ‘squashies’ and their sporting efforts, please contact Ernie on 9807 3348. Lastly, the Squash Club is always seeking new members who are interested in playing competitive Squash. If this is you, please contact Ernie on 9807 3348. How many cooks does it take to stuff a turkey? One, but you really have to SQUASH him in! TRAVELLING BOWLS CLUB Our latest trip for the Travelling Bowlers in September took us to Avoca Beach Bowling Club, where the weather was nice and the sun shone brightly on us. Our next trip is on 13 November 2016 to Dapto Citizens Bowling Club, we have not been there before and we are looking forward to visiting the club and using the facilities there. We will be having our Christmas lunch on Friday 9 December 2016 upstairs in the Golden Hawk Restaurant from midday. The cost will be $35 per person. Please contact Robyn Newton on 9858 3014 or Milly Farrell on 9874 4667 by 1st December 2016 at the latest to confirm your attendance so we can confirm final numbers. The Annual General Meeting is scheduled for February 2017; at this time we have no set date and will contact members once a date has been confirmed. If we do not see you before Christmas, we wish you all a merry and safe Christmas and a happy New Year, and hope to see you on the bus in 2017. For further information please contact Robyn Newton on 9858 3014, Brenda Paterson on 8819 9650, Maria Armstrong on 9888 6359 or Milly Farrell on 9874 4667.
