Graphenstone Paints A Different Carbon Future For Architects, Designer And Specifiers Those in the procurement business have a tremendous opportunity to significantly affect change and contribute positively to the development of our built environments. Whilst paint is not the first product that tends to spring to mind as a source of saving carbon, Graphenstone’s certified ultra-low CO2(e) profile significantly reduces the carbon footprint relative to traditional petrochemical-based coatings when specified on projects, something which could see it play a leading role as part of the UK’s future ‘green’ building design strategy. For those architects, designers, constructors, refurbishers or brands looking for innovative products as they transition toward being more sustainable, air-purifying paints can play a small but highly effective part of the solution.

Graphenstone ultra-low VOC paints (Trace Level only) are BREAM, WELL, and LEED compliant, earning valuable points towards building and project certifications. In addition, Graphenstone offers a uniquely broad range of globally recognised independent harm-free certifications: Cradle to Cradle, Global Green Tag, Eurofins, Air Comfort Gold, and many others, ensuring product adherence that meets the strict criteria for sustainability, health, and well-being.

Up to this point, the mindset regarding specification has seen price as the primary motivator. However, now is the time for those with buying power to change their approach and make meaningful changes in material procurement. Developers could be more proactive in specifying ‘better products’ and encourage their design teams to integrate these accordingly. The company’s clean-tech and innovative coatings are revolutionising the paint industry with surprisingly significant CO2 and CO2(e) savings for architects, developers and interior designers relative to other mainstream synthetic paint brands. Combined with natural minerals, Graphenstone lime-based paints present exceptional photocatalytic capabilities, breaking down harmful emissions and helping clean and purify indoor air to benefit all inhabitants. These unique pure lime ranges offer a remarkable CO2 absorption benefit during a 30-day curing process, capturing CO2 in volume from the surrounding environment (as much as 5 Kg’s per 15-litre pot). 6

Graphenstone UK founder Patrick Folkes says, “We know that there is a direct link between the quality of the air that we breathe and our health, particularly in built-up cities. The interest in low-embedded carbon, healthy, and clean-tech paints has rapidly increased since the pandemic, which saw a sharp increase in respiratory-related health issues. Our paints help improve indoor air quality, and thanks to a high PH level, these coatings also prevent the appearance of mould and fungus and feature no smell immediately after application.

Interior Design

Graphenstone’s extremely low carbon and clean manufacturing processes are as important to us as the selection of ingredients that the products contain. This approach sets us apart from those companies offering coatings with very high levels of petrochemical-based ingredients. Thanks to our unique ingredient, ‘Graphene’, our products also provide Class 1 strength ‘wet-rub’ test characteristics, highly unusual for mineralbased products, typically Class 2 or 3. This means that our coatings are highly washable and durable, with less cracking and lower requirements for maintenance; these are the perfect attributes for those looking for products that will stand the test of time. “ Using a science-based approach, Graphenstone is also confident in its ability to provide its customers with accurate calculations regarding how it measures its carbon savings. Graphenstone’s products have been rigorously tested and vetted by several leading and independent bodies in the built environment regarding its carbon claims. It now possesses consistent and internationally comparable metrics, which its clients can use to help them meet important ESG goals. Graphenstone believes in offering full transparency regarding ingredients listed on tubs and making its technical sheets easy to understand. Recent projects have included working with Gail’s Bakery on their interior fit out, Meta Open Arts on the rollout of their offices London wide, an ambitious 26,500 sq ft net zero project (Holbein Gardens, Belgravia/office refurbishment) with Grosvenor Estates and Architects Baar Gazetas and a London wide best-inclass student housing development roll out (Chapter London) for award-winning developers Greystar.

Taking a firm stance regarding microplastics, Graphenstone’s ecological footprint extends beyond the product element, including plastic-free outer packaging for shipment and innovative routes for redistributing and reusing paints. The company works with several worthwhile charities, including PaintCare and Community RePaint, to ensure leftover paint finds its way to worthwhile schemes and with a company called MY Group, which recycles tubs into contemporary furniture pieces and plastic building hoarding. Some specifiers believe that mineral paints may offer lower levels of performance, including durability, chalking, yellowing or colour fading, some of which require early repainting, or that they are ‘thin’ and need several coats applied. None of this is true of Graphenstone paints, which are highly pigmented with excellent opaque covering power, and offer first-class performance levels and superior coverage levels. In terms of building and retrofit projects, there are still considerable challenges to face. The energy performance of existing building stock needs to be significantly improved. However, they have recently worked with a number of architects and developers who have been ambitious in this regard, and the results have been compelling.

Patrick continues... “For now, mineral-based paints will likely continue to be at the premium end of pricing due to the higher cost of their raw material ingredients than their petrochemical counterparts. In this area, architects and specifiers could make more informed ecological choices and demonstrate a firm commitment to a greener and healthier future for all.” Visit Graphenstone UK at Future Build 5-7 March, 2024

Schluter-Systems’ Waterproofing Solutions For Beautiful Bathrooms Tucked away in Sutton Bonington in Nottinghamshire sits a beautiful Grade II-listed home which was carefully brought back to life with a stunning renovation. Andrew Hindes Interiors was tasked with renovating two small rooms and turning them into one large bathroom. Preserving the history of the building was a key aspect of this renovation which came with several challenges due to its age. Working with Schlüter-Systems products for over three years, Andrew and his team knew just what they needed when selecting a reliable solution to protect their client’s bathroom. The existing plumbing and pipework were removed and replaced with new pipework. New electrics and plastering were followed by the installation of a selection of SchlüterSystems products, all with the aim of maximising the lifespan of the new room. Starting in the shower area, the SchlüterKERDI-TS complete set was adhered to the shower tray to create a sound waterproof connection between the tray, made of stone resin and the adjoining wall. This solution was particularly important as the two different components could potentially create a weak spot which would allow water ingress. Further products from the Schlüter-KERDI waterproofing range were used, including the KERDI-200 membrane, SchlüterKERDI-KEBA sealing band and SchlüterKERDI-COLL sealing adhesive, supporting the overall protection of the bathroom. For functional and aesthetic purposes, a

8

prefabricated Schlüter-KERDI-BOARD-N niche was installed. This was perfect for the client as they needed storage that was convenient whilst remaining stylish. In terms of installation, it was far from challenging as it was easily integrated into the Schlüter-KERDI waterproofing system as a bonded waterproofing assembly. Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT-DUO Peel & Stick was the answer when deciding what underfloor heating to install. Andrew commented on how using this product reduced installation time; installing in just one hour compared to the typical installation time of up to a day. Not only does DITRA-HEAT-DUO-PS offer advantages of a quick heat-up response and sound insulation, its peel and stick technology means time and material is saved when installing. Another standout benefit of using DITRA-HEAT is the minimal height build-up of the membrane and cables, which is approximately 7.6mm. Ensuring build up is kept to a minimum is important when it comes to a renovation project, particularly when dealing with the sensitive restoration of a property like this one. Once the room was waterproofed, 120 x 60 mm stone-effect

Painting & Decorating

porcelain tiles were fitted on the shower wall and behind the wash basin, with 120 x 20 mm wood-effect porcelain tiles on the floor. When Andrew and his team began the work, they quickly realised the main challenges were down to the age of the property, with typically unlevel walls and dated plumbing and electrics. Ensuring this bathroom has a long lifespan and could meet the homeowners’ needs was important to Andrew and his team, and they remarked how nothing was too much trouble for Schlüter’s Area Sales Consultant, Stuart Gillson who was brilliant in offering support throughout the project. Andrew also received additional support from the technical team at Schlüter-Systems to help deal with some of the intricacies of the project. It was clear that preserving the building’s history through the installation of new system solutions, whilst creating a modern touch within this new bathroom, was a key focus for the homeowners in making this their long-term dream home. Antonino Cardillo designs Elogio del Grigio house as “miniature palazzo” Italian architect Antonino Cardillo has completed a house near Lake Garda featuring steep ceilings, arched doorways and a palette of textured plaster and marble. Located in Castiglione delle Stiviere, in Italy’s Lombardy region, the two-storey residence was designed by Cardillo in the spirit of “a miniature palazzo”. Called Elogio del Grigio, which means “praise of grey”, the house combines classic proportions with a minimalist design aesthetic. The building echoes the form of its red-walled neighbour, a typical northern Italian villa, but also incorporates references to traditional architecture from different parts of the Mediterranean. The layout centres around a grand firstfloor living room described as “the soul of this house”. 12

Cardillo drew on “the rectangular cuspidate rooms of Marrakech” and “window panes somewhere between Venetian windows and the marble hammams of Istanbul” for the design. “The project seeks to recognise and integrate some of the contributions of civilisations which are largely forgotten in Western architecture,” he told Dezeen. “It accepts Hegel’s invitation to learn to see the endless greys of realities,” he added, referencing the words of a 19thcentury German philosopher. Elogio del Grigio is home to a couple and their young daughter. After visiting Cardillo’s House of Dust,

Painting & Decorating

a Rome apartment featuring deep wall recesses and textured ceilings, the couple asked the architect to design them a family home. The brief called for generous living and dining spaces on two levels, three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a roof terrace and a garage with space for two cars. The building’s exterior is relatively modest, with a cool grey render finish and door shutters painted in a slightly brighter green-toned grey. Inside, the materials palette becomes more luxurious. Slabs of Carrara marble cover the walls and floors in the first-floor living room

and bathroom, with a book-matching technique to create subtle repetition within the surface patterns. The steeply sloping ceilings are coated with a plaster mix that includes volcanic ash, which was applied with a hand trowel to create the lumpy texture. The living room also features a custom-made granite table based on the one in House of Dust, created thanks to the support of stone contractor and previous collaborator, Daniele Ghirardi. “Daniele had already supported my research by funding an exhibition of my sculptures at the Soane Museum in London a few years ago,” Cardillo said. Bedrooms are also located on the first floor, which is wrapped on three sides by terraces, while the lower level houses an office, the garage and the second kitchen and living space. Other projects by Cardillo include a textured all-green gallery interior and a Sicilian grotto.

ABODE 2024 TRENDS

This month, the experts at Abode look ahead to 2024 as increased refinement and sophistication help to influence the latest kitchen sink and tap designs…

14

Painting & Decorating

The kitchen as a whole, is going to be led by two major style trends with the first being the evolution of the Scandistyle home interior which next year, will encompass softer more natural tones in painted finishes alongside calming white, grey and black set to top the style charts. We predict that this will definitely enhance designers’ ability to personalise the wellness kitchen experience and ensure that retailers can lean into growing consumer desire for kitchens which will complement healthy, familyfriendly lifestyles. As Scandi has proved its worth with form and function in furniture, we are noting that it is inspiring unique silhouettes will bring the wow factor to brassware. And the Nordic vibe for sustainability is also inspiring special features such as tactile beech wooden handles from FSC approved sources as attention to detail is a massive consideration for kitchen brassware in 2024. Also standing strong in 2024 is the New Traditional look to support the next generation of classically inspired kitchens. With discerning homeowners wanting all the mods cons with the timeless feel of sinks and taps inspired by previous eras, we will be seeing luxurious premium sinks which cater to the demands of today’s home-centered, wellness lifestyles. As consumers are demanding greater choice of finishes, leading manufacturers will be delivering brassware in polished finishes with tones of bronze and brass adding extra warmth and excitement to the sink. This is set to give end users even more freedom of choice when matching metallics throughout the kitchen living space for a seamless aesthetic, or using a combination of finishes for a multi-layered effect. In addition, straight knurling details will be big in 2024 with ribbed textures ensuring a tactile and easy-grip feature for tap handles – ideal for enhancing water safety in a high-traffic area as practical luxury is in demand. A strong focus on material and finish is key to meeting market demand for both personalisation and sustainability. In fact, we anticipate that granite sinks will be a big hitter in 2024 as consumers will be weighing up longevity and value for money in light of the economic squeeze as the cost-of-living crisis continues. Granite is set to appeal to the savvy end-

user and with premium manufacturers offering a wide range of shapes and sizes in trending black, white and grey. In my opinion, homeowners who are seeking something a ‘little extra’ will embrace this trend for a tried-and-tested natural material which is also refreshingly different and extremely appealing in a sophisticated contemporary kitchen. In addition, granite delivers on versality – with the ability to pair well with black and natural hues allowing end users to curate a look and feel inspired by the everpopular and ever-evolving industrial-style kitchen characterized by raw materials, dark hues and statement elements such as designer taps. 2024 is all about delivering new levels of functionality to support increasingly fluid lifestyles and household types. Space management and ‘functional flexibility’ will be a massive trend going forwards as end users demand increased utility so that tasks can be completed quickly and efficiently. This means we can anticipate

Industry News

that workflow dynamics will have a huge impact on end user ‘kitchen happiness’ next year. This will include a desire to opt for the same user-friendly sink in different sizes in the kitchen and utility area to reinforce and unify the working zones in line with a particular signature style. In addition, we are noting that the market is diversifying to reflect consumer desire for more choice when specifying a sink – especially in the wellness kitchen where the sink is a fundamental part of food preparation as well as cleaning down juicers and blenders. Ergonomic handsprays will become increasingly popular to separate tasks at the sink and maintain good hygiene, as well as ensuring the end user has even greater control over their water management. We anticipate that the combination of a steaming hot water tap and an ergonomic hand spray will become the norm for the best kitchens in 2024, especially as consumers are demanding even greater multi-functionality from their water supply. 15

Eclectic toilet designs Millio by Antonio Bullo: creating with innovative material compound opens new design opportunities. •

Unique material combination: ceramic interior and DuroCast Smooth exterior

Greater scope for design thanks to configurable exterior

Three different designs – each available in five colors

HygieneGlaze guarantees maximum hygiene

Can a toilet make a design statement without compromising functionality or hygiene? This was the question Duravit explored with the Italian industrial designer Antonio Bullo. Which led to their recent collaboration: a toilet that combines a hygienic ceramic interior with a customizable exterior made from DuroCast Smooth. “I created Millio to breathe new life into objects that are otherwise confined to their bare essentials,” said Antonio Bullo, explaining the basic idea of the toilet. The design includes three surface finishes that are available in different colors. “Millio goes beyond mere function by dissolving the division that currently exists between sanitary ceramic and the bathroom. Millio is completely integrated into the aesthetics of the bathroom,” Bullo went on to say, describing his creation. The best of both worlds: innovative material composite. The toilet is comprised of two distinctly separate parts, yet they are a perfect fit: a ceramic toilet interior and a mineralmaterial exterior that is pleasantly soft to the touch. The unique material combination offers the best of both worlds: the customizable exterior provides the maximum opportunity for versatility of design and is combined with outstanding hygiene thanks to the ceramic toilet interior. Duravit’s choice for the exterior 16

is DuroCast Smooth, a durable material that is more than equal to the rigors of everyday use. WC design with maximum individuality DuroCast Smooth provides a gel coat finish that enables a variety of colors and textures to be combined making it extremely versatile in terms of design opportunities. The colour palette comprises of five contemporary colours curated by designer Christian Werner, and is also available in one of three different grooved and patterned surface textures: which offer an enticing visual and tactile alternative to the smooth standard version. The colour concept includes other Duravit products that can be merged together in a variety of ways – from a monochrome bathroom in Parlour Blue right up to a multi-coloured composition. A special option is available for order quantities of 24 units and above. Ordered in such numbers, Millio can be

Painting & Decorating

manufactured in any colour, opening completely new design opportunities for projects. For example, if the colour of a brand identity is to be consistently integrated into a building project such and offering can be included within the overall design concept. Design that meets the highest hygiene standards As a ceramic specialist with decades of experience, Duravit selected hygienic ceramic as the material for the body of the Millio toilet. The inner basin of the glossy white surface was additionally finished with the HygieneGlaze antibacterial glaze to offer maximum hygiene. After just six hours, 90% of bacteria (e.g. coli bacteria) are inhibited and after 24 hours 99.9% – an unprecedented level. The exterior made from DuroCast Smooth is affixed to the ceramic bowl via a waterproof bond, making it easy to clean. Similarly, the pore-free surface of the mineral material plays its part in keeping the toilet clean and hygienic.

Aluprof at the Passivhaus Conference By Wojciech Brożyna - MD Aluprof UK

Organised by the UK’s Passivhaus Trust, the 2023 UK Passivhaus Conference was a hybrid event held at McEwan Hall on The University of Edinburgh campus on the 16th & 17th of October. Over the two day conference over 600 speakers and delegates explored the adaptability of Passivhaus, its implementation and benefits over a diverse range and scale of projects around the UK, plus its future applicability for all homes throughout Scotland. Aluprof were delighted, once again, to support the event as a sponsor taking the lead when it comes to the specification of high thermal performance windows, doors and facade systems used in Passivhaus construction. The event was attended by Paul Sherman, Aluprof Sales Consultant and Neil Garner, Aluprof Major Projects Consultant. ‘Scotland leads the way’ was the theme for the Passivhaus Conference, the biggest held in the UK to date. There was a great deal of interest at the event following Scotland. Parliament’s decision to adopt a version of the standard next year. Keynote speaker Patrick Harvie MSP, ‘Scottish Government Minister for Zero Carbon Buildings, Active Travel and Tenants’ Rights’, gave an update on how the ‘Scottish equivalent to the Passivhaus standard’ policy is developing. Leading the way, Scotland is the first nation to adopt the Passivhaus standard, or its equivalent, previous adoption by Brussels, Vancouver, Massachusetts, and Heidelberg have only been adopted on a municipality level. The Passivhaus standard is not new to Scotland, it was recognised some time ago that upfront investment in the standard across new construction was beneficial in the long term with significant benefits to health and the reduction of carbon emissions. The conference showcased a wide range of new and completed projects which included schools and social housing across the region. Sarah Lewis, Research & Policy Director, Passivhaus Trust, commented on the growth of school projects adopting 20

the standard, “An innovative funding mechanism from the Scottish Futures Trust has encouraged the building of schools to the Passivhaus standard in Scotland. Projects receiving funding need to meet a clean energy target. Funding may reduced based on any performance gap post-completion. The Passivhaus standard effectively eliminates the performance gap, de-risking the securing of funding. It has been impressive how swiftly the industry, supply chain, and clients have adjusted to delivering to the Passivhaus standard in the education sector.”

5 Trends for 2024 Bathroom Design from UK Bathrooms

As we approach the end of 2023, it’s time to delve into the major trends poised to dominate bathroom design in 2024. Let’s explore the five trends that are set to lead the way in shaping the aesthetics of bathrooms in the coming year. Warm and Cosy Hues In 2024, the focus is on infusing sophisticated warmth into your living spaces, including the bathroom. Say goodbye to stark and clean contrasts that have prevailed in interior palettes, and welcome perfectly blended creams, soft browns, and rich rustic woods. Think of it as embracing the “Log Cabin” style, creating an earthy-inspired palette that transforms your bathroom into a peaceful cocoon—a perfect start and end to your day. Daring Mix of Metals Get ready to embrace bold combinations of bathroom hardware. 2024 encourages the use of various brassware colours to complement and express individuality.

Warmer metals like brushed copper mixed with brushed golds and other metallic tones will take centre stage. While not for the faint-hearted, when executed correctly, this trend will result in a bathroom full of character. Built-In Shower Spaces In the coming year, there will be a shift away from exposed glass cube shower enclosures, ushering in the era of showers seamlessly integrated into the bathroom space. Although conventional glass enclosures remain ideal for delineating the shower area without sacrificing space and light, people are becoming more inventive. Expect well-lit built-in showers with clever window and spotlight installations. Nature-Inspired Haven Bathroom aesthetics in 2024 will witness a growing embrace of natural elements.

Organic textures such as timber, stone, and even living foliage will converge harmoniously to create opulent and grounding bathroom havens. These elemental accents will enhance the visual appeal of bathrooms, providing a tactile opulence that elevates the design experience, aligning with the desire to create a sanctuary for enhanced relaxation. Hybrid Aesthetic 2024 will introduce an intriguing shift in bathroom design, with the hybrid aesthetic juxtaposing sleek contemporary features with the rustic charm of cottage core. Ultra-modern vanity units will coexist with reclaimed driftwood, and new mirrors will be paired with vintage lighting. This trend reflects a cost-conscious approach to home updates, embracing upcycling as a popular choice. The result is a blended look that celebrates a mismatch of styles united by quality and purpose. 23

Ledvance Launches Everloop: Series Of Sustainable Luminaires Recently, LEDVANCE introduced a sub-brand for all the company’s sustainability initia-tives known as LEDVANCE LOOP. This model covers all efforts and measures across the company to help transform the lighting industry and improve its green credentials. LEDVANCE LOOP also contains cir-cular products which are put under the EVERLOOP series. Warrington, UK, 4 December 2023. The lighting experts from LEDVANCE launch a new product series, EVERLOOP, featuring luminaires with conveniently replaceable LED light sources and drivers. Using replaceable parts EVERLOOP products maximise a luminaire’s lifespan, avoiding the need to dispose of complete luminaires and reducing the number of electrical products going into the waste stream. EVERLOOP products are not only a sustainable choice but also a convenient one for installers and facility managers. The first model of the series to be available is the LEDVANCE Linear In-diviLED Gen 2 in December 2023, offering both direct and indirect versions with On/Off or DALI options respectively. The range offers CRI90 and UGR<19

which makes it perfect for office applications. With a greater lifespan these luminaires are a sustainable and convenient choice for installers, planners, and facility managers, ensuring sustainable efficiency of industrial and office applica-tions as well as public buildings. In addition to an extended lifetime and reduced waste, benefits include cost savings, as well as allowing buildings to maintain the same looks. “EVERLOOP is our answer to the challenge of going from a linear to a circular product lifecycle for luminaires, contributing to the EU’s plan to reduce electronic waste,” said Nuno Paiva, Head of Professional Portfolio Management at LEDVANCE. “The key feature of EVERLOOP lumi-naires is that critical components, such as the light sources and drivers, are conveniently upgradeable or replaceable, with available spare parts. That makes the luminaire EVER-lasting. In the future, we intend to integrate this feature into more of our luminaire series to save material and

These initiatives not only contribute to a healthier planet but also demonstrate the industry’s dedication to creating a sustainable future for all. Workforce Development and Diversity Workforce development and diversity have been significant areas of focus in the construction sector in 2023. Construction companies are recognizing the value of a diverse workforce and the benefits it brings to their projects.
